ANNUAL REPORT 2021
Dear Friends,
2021 was a Year of New Beginnings.
April 1, 2021 was my first day back as Executive Director at Family Promise of Essex County. Many of
you will remember that I have been involved with Family Promise for over twenty years, as a volunteer at
my church, a board member and as Executive Director here in Essex County from 2007 to 2013 and then
as Executive Director at Family Promise of Greater Orlando. After all these years, I am still shocked that
there are families in the United States experiencing homelessness. Did you know that 2.5 million
American children experience homelessness each year? And right here at home, Essex County has the
highest rate of student homelessness in New Jersey, over 1200 children in our local schools experienced
homelessness just last year. A child’s future begins at home but for children experiencing homelessness,
the future is defined by their lack of housing. That is why Family Promise of Essex County exists, to
provide a new beginning and the chance to build a better future.
2021 was filled with new beginnings for Family Promise of Essex County as an organization and the
350+ individuals who benefitted from our services.
· We welcomed a new expanded social service team led by Program Director, Kelly Curry, MSW, LSW.
By year end, the team included two case managers, one of whom is bilingual.
· We added the new Hand Up Prevention program, an initiative that keeps families in their homes and
out of shelter. Ninety-three families with 103 children received prevention assistance, by far our largest
program in 2021.
· As a result of the COVID 19 pandemic, we adapted to a new shelter model. It was no longer safe to
provide congregate shelter in the facilities of our faith-based partners, so we transitioned to a scattered
site model for shelter, using hotel rooms for the short term.
· Toward the end of the year, we began exploring a new partnership with Circles USA to provide
improved stabilization services for families who exit homelessness to permanent housing. The program
will help our graduate families gain greater economic mobility and has the potential to engage hundreds
of volunteers in a new way.
Perhaps Ms. Harris described the impact of a new beginning best when she said, “I am excited to be
moving and living here in a good, happy environment. I’m really excited for this new chapter in my life. My
son will attend a better school system. He’ll have space to play---a back yard and a porch. Family Promise
helped a lot and I thank them so much. They helped us find a home and we don’t have to worry about
being on the street next week.”
On behalf of our Board of Trustees, the staff and all the families like Ms. Harris and her son who
benefitted from your donation, thank you for your kindness and your generosity.
With deep appreciation,
Family Promise of Essex County’s (FPE) mission is to help homeless
and at-risk families achieve self-sufficiency by providing shelter,
social services, and housing assistance through a community-based
approach. FPE envisions a community in which every family has a
home, a livelihood, and the chance to build a better future.
Family Promise of Essex County provides a full circle of care for
families facing the crisis of homelessness. Whenever possible, FPE
will prevent or divert families from becoming homeless in the first
place—often with minimal financial assistance. If they do become
homeless, FPE will place them in a safe emergency shelter
environment and provide housing focused case management
services to help them transition to permanent housing. Once
housed, they will receive ongoing services and supports to help
them maintain housing stability, increase self-sufficiency, and
increase wellbeing for all family members.

DONOR HIGHLIGHTS
"Why I Give" A Story of
Legacy and Generosity
Josh Weston contacted Family Promise of Essex
County about creating the Judy Weston Fund in
memory of his extraordinary wife. Judy and Josh
Weston have been longtime residents of Montclair
and many local organizations have benefitted from
their generous philanthropy. Judy served for ten
years as a social worker at Jewish Vocational
Services, as well as President of the Montclair
Adult School. She also served on the boards of
the American Museum of Natural History and the National Dance Institute. The Judy
Weston Fund at Family Promise of Essex County was established to provide case
management and assistance to low-income Montclair residents in need of help. To
date, the Judy Weston Fund has helped 20+ families with rent, electric bills, childcare
and camps, car payments and other boundaries that keep families in poverty and at risk
of becoming homeless. Many of those families are now stabilized and extremely
thankful for the help they received.
For one mother, assistance from the Judy Weston fund meant she could get support
with childcare in order to keep her job. With two cleaning jobs during the day and
schools being closed due to Covid-19, lack of childcare was making it difficult for her to
work. With the support of the Judy Weston Fund, childcare and schoolwork assistance
was provided at the YMCA for 8 months. In this time, an FPE Case Manager assisted
the mother with a plan for stability so that she could continue to work and find
consistent childcare in her future.
“Because of you, I am able to stay
in Montclair, a town that I’ve come
to love. I’m able to have a respite
from worrying about being
potentially tossed out on the street
and also having my utilities shut off.
I’ve gotten time to get myself
together so that I can get ready
for being able to make it- and I will.
"Words don’t even say enough.
I’m so happy I get to stay here
(in Montclair) and be a part of
the community that I’ve come to
love. Thank you so much.”
Young
Donor's Are
Taking a
Stake in the
Future of
Their
Community
You're never too young to make a difference in your community. FPE donor, Daniel
Greenberg raised over $5k to purchased Kindles for FPE children. His passion to support
literacy came from his love for reading as a child.
"I learned recently that frequent school transitions and extended absences that come along
with homelessness have a significant impact on youth literacy. I know my time reading as a
child helped me become who I am today". With that knowledge, Daniel wanted to help.
Daniel created REACH to make sure that homeless children do not fall through the cracks.
REACH stands for Reading Encourages Achievement, Creativity, and Hope. He then
worked with the Family Promise of Essex County to raise money with the goal to put a
Kindle in the hands of homeless children.
FPE has seen many children forfeit birthday presents in lieu of a donation to FPE, as well as
many mitzvah projects and is grateful to all of our young donors, that are learning early in
life, the benefits of helping our neighbors in need.
"I know my time reading as a child helped me
become who I am today and I wanted to help
others get the same joy out of reading."
A Family's Story:
Meet Gloria and Her Children
"I am very grateful for the
staff of Family Promise of
Essex County. They have
cared for the well- being of
me and my daughters, giving
us opportunities to have
food, clothes, among other
things we needed."

-Gloria, FPE Graduate
You have probably known someone like
Gloria and her kids- a single mom trying to
make it through the pandemic.
Gloria never anticipated finding herself as
a single parent with three children and
without the resources to keep a roof over
her their head, until her husband left them
and moved out of the country during the
pandemic.
Up until that point, she and her husband
had been working opposite shifts so that
childcare was not an issue. Her husband
was also paying most of the bills. In the
beginning of the pandemic, Gloria lost her
job when schools closed because she
needed to be home to supervise her
children during virtual schooling. When her
husband left, she soon fell behind in rent
payments and feared they would lose their
home. Gloria started reaching out to
service agencies for help. In March she
connected with Family Promise of Essex
County (FPE) and a FPE Case Manager
began to work step by step with Gloria, to
plan for a more stable future.
With donor support, summer camp was
provided for the three children, so that
Gloria could go back to work. Donor
support also provided clothing and
school supplies for the children,
replaced her broken microwave, and
provided food gift cards to help her
through this major transition of
becoming a single mom. The FPE
Homeless Prevention Program was
able to pay her back rent and case
managers assisted in assessing
daycare options, budgeting, planning,
and navigating new job options.
Gloria truly appreciates that she is not
alone as she travels this new and
unexpected journey. YOU are an
advocate who is fighting alongside
Gloria, while equipping her and her
children to advocate for themselves for
a more stable and brighter future.
OUR CONGREGATIONS
Because poverty and homelessness are complex issues that require a community response,
Family Promise of Essex County has always engaged local congregations and other civic
groups in our work. We believe it is important to bring neighbors in need together with
compassionate people who want to help. Through these interactions everyone learns and
grows, hearts and minds are opened making real change possible.
In 2021, representatives from our network of congregations donated their time and intellect
to help our board and staff examine the feasibility of reopening the Interfaith Hospitality
Network rotational shelter program in a post COVID world. After countless interviews, data
analysis, research into alternative shelter models, and a hard look at our core values, the
Shelter Task Force concluded that we need to transition to a scattered site shelter. This
change means our emergency shelter for families will now be hosted in single family
apartments or homes and we will be engaging volunteers and congregations in different
and exciting new ways.
Thank you to all the coordinators, volunteers and clergy from our Interfaith Hospitality
Network who donated their time and talent to the Shelter Task Force in 2021; David Berry,
Rev. Rick Boyer, Margot Greenfield, Shirley Grill, Glenn Hoffs, Roxanne Kent and Sarah
Leonard.
Summer Camp Opportunities
FPE Congregations have a long history of
enriching childhood education with camp
scholarships, and supporting FPE's educational
classes, workshops and field trips. Wyoming
Church gave FPE children scholarships for
Camp Johnsonburg, along with duffle bags of
camp necessities, sleeping bags, toiletry kits,
flash lights, and more.
Summer Camp is an experience
that increases a children's self
esteem, leadership and friendship
skills. We are happy to offer
children an opportunity to
participate in such a beneficial
experience.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Family Promise of Essex County
Walk for Change Event! We raised over $85,000 thanks to the wonderful
coordinators, volunteers and friends of FPE. This money will go towards serving
FPE families on their road to stability. Our core values at FPE include engaging the
whole community in combating family homelessness. We truly can’t do this
essential work without your volunteer efforts and donations. We look forward to
making this successful walk an annual tradition at FPE!
GIVING THE GIFT OF HOPE
FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The Family Promise of Essex County holiday party has a long tradition of bringing FPE families
together with volunteers, Board members, staff and the community to celebrate the season.
Donations from all over Essex County filled the room with presents. This year dinner to-go
was provided by St Rose of Lima. Children were all smiles when picking out their presents and
families left with food and gifts for the whole family. Thank you to all the donors and
volunteers that make these events possible.
