WDC Amateur League
Championships attracts multi
national entry at Disney
World, Paris.
For once my journey to a foreign
competition was not only
pleasurable and trouble free, but
was totally relaxing, there is a lot
to be said for taking the Euro-Star
to France.
Not only was it comfortable, but
there was no problem with customs
and queuing to show your passport
at the end of the journey, or the
dreaded “Baggage Allowance”, On
the down side there is no Duty Free,
on the plus side if you want the
centre of Paris it takes you straight
there, and if you want Disney Land
it is the next stop approximately
10 minutes on from the centre, and
from the station you can literally
walk to your hotel or the resort
itself.
Having arrived at lunchtime and
checked into the main hotel on
the resort (The New York Hotel)
I fully intended to take a tour of
the resort itself, unfortunately this
is not possible without paying for
an admission ticket which includes
entrance to the rides and features as
well, plus the fact that it was pouring
down with rain, so I resorted to a
drink in one of the many bars and
restaurants, and a look
through the program
for the weekend.
This is the second
year of this event, and
I have to say there is
literally something
for everybody. All
grades from Juvenile
to Professional,
Ballroom, Latin,
Formation, Salsa,
Swing and even The
World Open School-
Team Championships.
With entries from 35
different countries as
far afield as Russia,
Ukraine, Kazakhstan
and even the
United States
of America, good prize
money for the top
events and a panel
of adjudicators
that reads like a
“who’s who”
of the top
professionals
in the
b u s i n e s s ,
under the
chairmanship
of Marcus
Hilton MBE,
this promised
to be a very
good event.
Day 1
With 14 panels of
adjudicators allocated to this
three-day event. There were a
total of fifteen competitions to
get through on day one, with two
ballrooms in the morning and then
the main ballroom for the rest of
weekend.
The first event of the day in the
Times Square Ballroom was the
Disney Land Resort Paris Amateur
Ballroom Championship 2009.
The first round saw 43 couples,
from 12 different countries take to
the floor. The adjudicators finally
brought this down to a final of
six, the eventual winners were
Duscan Dragovic & Ekaterina
Romanscikina form Serbia.
I have to say that considering the
number of competitions being run
and the number of entries, I was
amazed at the fact that not only
did they run to times, at one stage
we were actually running fifteen
minutes early, this just goes to show
the efficient organization that went
into this event.
Day 2
Ten world Championships Up
for Grabs and a big surprise in
the Disney Land Resort Paris Pro
Latin.
Day two of this event turned out to
be one of the best day’s
competitions I
have seen
in a
l o n g
Duscan Dragovic &
Ekaterina Romanscikina
t i m e
o u t s i d e
of the main
competitions held in the UK.
There were ten world championships
at stake across all the grades from
Juvenile to Professional and even
Formation. The afternoon set the
trend for the day with varying
levels of Juvenile, Junior, Youth
and Senior.
The evening session started
with the finals of Youth Latin,
Senior Over 55 Ballroom, and the
Senior Over 45 Latin World Open
Championships.
Then it was down to the

4
Riccardo Cocchi &
Yulia Zagoruychenko
main competitions of the night, the World Open Amateur Ballroom
Championship, and the Disneyland Resort Paris Professional Latin.
The first round of the Amateur Ballroom had a starting field in excess
of fifty-five couples dancing in three heats, and the standard was worthy
of any major championship. The eventual winners doing the double this
weekend were Duscan Dragovic & Ekaterina Romanscikina from Serbia.
(We have a full report of this division by Carol Powell)
After having watched the first round of the Amateur Ballroom it was hard
to imagine anything would steal the show, how wrong can one be?
The MC’s announced the first round of the Professional Latin event, and
the audience suddenly went wild as a last minute entry in the shape of
Riccardo Cocchi & Yulia Zagoruychenko took to the floor, and it was
almost as though the audience had been given the signal to start a carnival.
The whole atmosphere changed from good to great and it was time for
everyone to party between rounds, something I have never in over forty
years of being around dancing, seen before, and have to say I hope to see
much more of. Again we will have a full report on this competition in a
later edition by Barbara McColl.
Day 3
How do you reduce a panel of judges to tears?
The final day of this year’s Disneyland Resort Paris World Open Amateur
Championships had a lot to follow after Saturday night’s carnival
atmosphere.
With a further ten championships to be won, the question was could it live
up to last night.
With the World Open Youth title going to Russian couple Denis Tagintsev
& Svetlana Borisova, the question being asked was, could one of the
smallest couples in the Junior event do the double. Luke Miller and Hanna
Cresswell from England took the World Ballroom title over Dmytro
Palyey & Oksana Tsykalyuk from the Ukraine, the tallest couple in the
competition at nearly six feet tall in a close run contest.
In the Latin event the Ukraine couple where clear winners with 37/55 1st
places,
and the English couple placing 2-3-2-3-2.
And so we moved into the final session of the weekend, with two world
titles left to be claimed the Senior Ballroom and the Amateur Latin, plus
the Professional Ballroom event to come, it was difficult to know what
would be the highlight of the evening.
The finalists for the World Open Senior Over 35 Standard event took to
the floor, with three dances down and two to go the DJ started the music
for the Foxtrot, and simultaneously virtually all the adjudicators including
the chairman Marcus Hilton MBE, were reduced to tears of laughter. The
music being played for this SENIOR foxtrot was the Monty Python hit
“Lets All Look On The Bright Side Of Life”. Never have I seen a funnier
sight than a panel of world class judges trying to mark a final with tears
running down their faces.
During this final session out came the maraca’s and once again the two
MC’s starting to get the audience in to a party mood yet again with The
Village People’s YMCA.
For me the highlight of the weekend has to be the cabaret performance by
the World Professional South American Showdance Champions Riccardo
Cocchi & Yulia Zagoruychenko, this performance was absolutely
mesmerizing, and a great way to finish a great weekend.
I must thank the organizing committee of the WDC Amateur League
for allowing me the opportunity to attend and report on this fabulous
weekend.

Once again the WDC Amateur
league has succeeded !!!!
On December 5th 2009 in the heart of
Disneyland in Paris, the WDC Amateur
League organised a spectacular event with the
attendance of a superb panel of judges together
with outstanding Professional Latin couples.
The atmosphere was something quite special,
which of course was also due to the fantastic music.
Into 1st place from the USA; Riccardo
Cocchi & Yulia
Zagoruychenko.
This evening
R i c c a r d o
and Yulia
shocked
m e ,
t h e y
were
Disneyland Paris
Professional Latin
absolutely
fantastic.
They have the
ability to move
at such speed
and still maintain a great deal of calmness.
Yulia seems to be going from strength to
strength and is quickly developing into a great
female Latin exponent. Looking forward to see
their development over the next six months.
Into 2nd place from Lithuania Justas Duknauskas
& Ekaterina Lapaeva.
This boy is
such a great
talent with
an individual
style, which
if developed
in the right
direction will
be a force to be
reckoned with in
the future. Ekaterina
is also individual with
her own strong style
but I feel they have to
believe in themselves more.
Into 3rd place from
Italy Emanuele
Soldi & Elisa Nasato.
This couple is so well suited
to be in the professionals.
Elisa is beautiful to look
at and now her dancing
is in balance with her
look. Emanuele has
improved beyond
recognition. Keep
up the good work.
Into 4th place
from the USA
Delyan Terziev
& Boriana
Delcheva.
Two years ago I
thought that this
couple had great
potential but they have
not seemed to develop
in the correct way. Time
to re-think a little. All
is not lost and could get
back on track very quickly.
Into 5th place from South Korea
Jay Park & Natalia Maidiuk.
A new partnership that is developing quite well.
No doubt this girl is one of the most beautiful
girls in dancing and I must say she has improved
from when I saw her last time in Assen. I feel
that Jay needs to work harder in achieving some
body action and think what is happening in
between steps and
not on the step.
Into 6th place
from the
Ukraine Igor
V o l k o v
& Ella
Ivanova.
A little
unlucky on
this occasion.
This girl is
one of the best
groomed ladies on
the floor and looked
stunning in this event. They danced well from
the first dance to the last dance. Igor is a very
masculine dancer but if he could develop a softer
action he would dance more efficiently and not
loose so much energy.

Amateur Standard
Report by Carol Powell
Photos by Andrew Miller
As with any report on competition dancing the
comments will be subjective. Therefore herein
lie my impressions of this very interesting final.
1st - Duscan Dragovic & Ekaterina Romanscikina
(Serbia)
This couple certainly put out a strong,
solid performance but for me are extremely
inconsistent with respect to timing . Their
approach to competition seems to be power and
progression at all costs . If they could address
these problems then perhaps their marks would
not be so diverse. They promise a lot but for me
fail to deliver the qualities I appreciate.
2nd - Alexander Voskalchuk & Marina Aleshina
(Russia)
A very tall couple which in certain respects
could be to their advantage however they do not
capitalise on this asset due to lack of attention to
correct principles of movement. They should also
pay attention to their floorcraft as I was aware
Alexander Voskalchuk &
Marina Aleshina
were responsible
for many unnecessary
collisions and avoided the
opportunity to apologise
at all costs.
t h e y
3rd - Janick Loewe & Pia
Lundanes (Denmark) -
This couple are certainly
eye catching in the first
round as they flit and
float all around the
floor. However, their
exuberance takes over
and they sacrifice
qualities such as
style, togetherness
and partnering in an
attempt to achieve
audience response. Unfortunately they
tend to show more rise and fall in Tango and
Foxtrot than in Waltz which cannot be forgiven.
4th - Dmitry Milekhin & Evgenlya Sutyaginskaya
(Russia) - This couple were very impressive in
the first round showing marked improvement
since Blackpool. Their approach is more
restrained and they do not look for the ‘cheap
thrill’ that many others are constantly showing.
However as the competition continued they lost
their body tone and their position to each other
squared up and it
Duscan Dragovic &
Ekaterina Romanscikina
started to
look a bit heavy but there is a lot of promise
here.
5th - Gaetano Iavarone & Emanuela Napolitano
Janick Loewe &
Pia Lundanes

Dmitry Milekhin &
Evgenlya Sutyaginskaya
Gaetano Iavarone &
Emanuela Napolitano
Andrey Sirbu &
Alexandra Hixson
(Italy)
This is another couple
who have timing
problems particularly
in Viennese Waltz and
Quickstep. Again over
progression is, I feel ,
the main cause of their
problems. Tonight the
picture looked sharper
and cleaner than of
late but unfortunately
posture problems crept
in and detracted from
their performance.
6th - Andrey Sirbu
& Alexandra Hixson
(England)
I was more impressed
with this couple who,
for me, presented
a more correct
development of
fundamental principles
coupled with correct
timing and, tonight,
much more expressive
personalities. Maybe
not quite as much ‘ in
your face’ as some of
the other couples but
that’s not always a bad
thing. They still have
much more to offer
and appear to have the
right foundations for
improvement.
On checking the
adjudicators markings
following the event
every couple received
everything from 1st
to 6th which gave
the scrutineers a
real headache. As an
example the couple
finishing 6th received
only eleven 6th
placings whilst the
champions received
seven 6th placings
from the panel of 13
Top class adjudicators.
That’s how close it
was.
Had this result been
completely reversed I
for one would not have
been surprised.
IDSF World Championship Formation Latin
Report and photos
by Helmut Roland
www.sportevent-photography.de
“Dancing is Bremen!” is the opinion of Jens
Steinmann, President of “Grün-Gold-Club
Bremen”. Grün-Gold-Club was organizer
of the 2009
IDSF World
Championship
F o r m a t i o n
Latin on 5th of December
organized by
ISDF. The
AWD Dome
in Bremen was
c o m p l e t e l y
filled with
2 , 0 0 0
enthusiastic
fans of
f o r m a t i o n
dancing - even
in the afternoon
session with
the preliminary
rounds -
when IDSF
C h a i r m a n
Heinz Speaker opened the competition and gave
Andreas Neuhaus the floor as supervisor of the
IDSF World Championship Formation Latin
2009.
Heinz Neuhaus announced 19 formation teams
from 12 countries to compete for the title. Seven
adjudicators were nominated to evaluate the
formation teams. Not unimportant to know:
the judicators come from England, Germany,
Hungary, Lithuania, Netherlands, Russia and
Slovakia.
Champions, Grun-Gold-Club Bremen “A-Team”
In a dramatic final round the
A-Team “Grün-Gold-Club Bremen”
managed to win the IDSF World Championship
Formation Latin 2009 with the help of the
fantastic fans from Bremen in AWD Dome
applauding and cheering “their” team to regain
the title from titleholder “Klaipéda University
Formation Team Zuvédra (A-Team) with a very
narrow margin.
In the 1 st round in the afternoon session we saw
19 formation teams with excellent performances
fighting for a ticket to the semi-finals.
The evening event opened with more than a
hundred kids from Bremen “Tanzarena” and
“TS Kirchner” verifying that dancing
is “in” in Bremen and new dancing
blood is growing. Another highlight:
Eight charming young ladies from
“Blumenthaler TV von 1862 – multiple
German Masters of Gymnastics –
demonstrated the high level of their
sport to the audience.
Before the semi-final rounds were
started, the organizers had one more
goody on the agenda: “Braunschweiger
TSC Standardformation”, 2 nd of German
Championship Formation Standard
2009 and 3 rd place at ISDF World
Championship Formation Standard
on 28 th of November 2009 in Stuttgart.
The audience saw excellent formation
standard when the Braunschweiger TSC
presented their “Ballads of Rock”.
12 teams made the “cut” and even
raised the power to qualify for the final
(scheme). At least the adjudicators rated

6 formation teams to join the final round.
Just before starting the final round a very
interesting contrast was set by a short standard
show. Simone Segaroti &
Annette Sudol from Germany
presented their interpretation
of waltz and slow foxtrot.
An excellent standard
demonstration and a total
contrast to what followed.
Segatori - Sudol last week
advanced to 5 th place at the
World Championship Standard
in Aarhus.
Every one expected a neck and
neck fight between from title
holder “Klaipéda University
Formation Team Zuvédra
(A-Team) and A-Team “Grün-
Gold-Club Bremen”. So it
happened. But let me report in
sequence.
HSV Zwölfaxing Team – Austria – achieved
place 6 in a high-performance final round. The
team showed excellent formation dancing and
the audience attended the show with strong
applause. At least five out of seven adjudicators
rated HSV Zwölfaxing Team from Austria to
place 6.
Lithuania managed to qualify both teams,
Zuvedra Klaipeda A- and B-Team, to the final
round. Klaipéda University Formation Team
Zuvédra (B-Team) inspired the audience and
21
presented excellent dancing and great accuracy
in rolling out the pictures of their show. The
majority of four out of seven adjudicators
assigned place 5 for Zuvedra Klaipeda B-Team.
The Vera Tyumen Formation
Team from Russia attained
place 4. Looking to the
markings of the final
round you will see that the
adjudicators differed from
place 1 (Alexander Savatin
from Russia!) to place 5
(Daiva Mitkuviene from
Lithuania!) for this team.
Igor Jagersky from Slovakia
saw Vera Tiumen on 2 nd place
while his college Cor van
de Stroet from Netherlands
preferred the 3 rd place for
the team. Anikó Borsos from
Hungary, Michael Gewehr
from Germany and David
Roberts from England rated
the team on 4 th place. Every
one may form his view of the evaluation.
TSZ Velbert – Germany – was lucky to achieve
3 rd place with a rating 3-3-3-4-4-4-4. Although

24
the majority
is gained at 4 th
place the TSZ
Velbert achieved
3 rd place. This is
correct because
The “annual duel” between Klaipéda University
Formation Team Zuvédra (A-Team) from
Lithuania and “Grün-Gold-Club Bremen” from
Titleholder Klaipéda University Formation Team
Zuvédra (A-Team) from Lithuania was the last
team to start in the final round. They presented
their formation dancing with a maximum of
technical precision. They were brilliant and they
danced using the music of “James
Bond” technically perfect.
Now it was time for the
adjudicators to decide. The results
for team no. 7 from Germany was
given first. It said: 1-1-1-2-2-
2-2. This should have been the
2 nd place for the formation team
Grün-Gold-Club Bremen. Silence
in the hall and disappointment on
the faces of the German team
and the trainer Alberto Albanese.
They had fought hard to win the
title back in Bremen.
Some seconds later. The results for
the titleholders from Lithuania:
2-2-3-1-1-3-1. Igor Jagersky
from Slovakia and Alexander
Savatin from Russia both rated
them on 3 rd place. So they
achieved majority on place 1 – 2
with (5) nominations. This was
not enough to win the title again.
Grün-Gold achieved majority on
place 1 – 2 with (7) nominations.
This was the title: The A-Team
more than words can say. A real dramatic final
round! We await the “duel” next year.
