CHATTING WITH THE CHAIR
OSAP is Excited to Welcome You to Licking County
O'TOOLE
If you have yet to mark your calendar,
now is the time to act and register!
The OSAP Annual Conference is
July 20-22, 2022, in Newark at
the Cherry Valley Hotel. Let’s face
it: OSAP has a great and historied
tradition of holding phenomenal
annual events. This year will be no
different; I know it. There will be
solid first-class speakers and content
that links back to what association
professionals need. Not only does the
programming greatly benefit me, but
I also love all the great networking
opportunities that the organization
and its members provide each year.
IF YOU HAVE YET TO MARK
YOUR CALENDAR,
NOW IS THE TIME
TO ACT AND
REGISTER!
OSAP makes that happen! Not only
through their annual conference, but
through a number of programs and
events. COVID changed things, but it
didn’t change the numerous offerings
and connections OSAP provides us
then and now. Some of these offerings
include the monthly Partner Perspectives
calls, the CEO Dialogues, Association
Coffee Talks and the quarterly luncheon
meetings and educational workshops.
OSAP events provide outstanding
opportunities to network and strengthen
connections with our state’s association
professionals. I love having a trusted
group of networks upon whom I can
rely – no matter the challenge.
I have to admit, though, that OSAP
participation isn’t solely about what
you get out of it. You won’t get
much if you aren’t able to contribute
and engage with your peers. I’ve
held many positions in various
organizations during my role with
OSAP. However, no matter your
role, I encourage you to engage and
participate. You’ll always find people
willing to help you in your career.
Whenever I am able to engage and
participate in an OSAP event, I get
pretty excited. Whether it’s the
annual conference, an association
coffee talk or a CEO Dialogue,
I walk away with great new
insights and a stronger
understanding of how our
members overcome the
challenges presented by
our industries.
Take, for instance, the 2021 annual
conference last year. It was not
only the state’s largest association
event, it was the first time many of
us were able to meet face-to-face
and gain valuable insights from one
another after the pandemic held us all
hostage. In addition to the industryleading
content presented during the
conference, I gained new knowledge
on how organizations overcame the
pandemic’s challenges and grew
and adapted. It also provided me
with insights that I could share with
my volunteer leaders to use my
organization forward.
The opportunity to come together as
association experts is one of OSAP’s
greatest benefits, as it allows us to
share our challenges and triumphs
for the betterment of all. While it is
valuable to take something away from
an OSAP gathering, it is even more
important to give something back.
No matter how long you’ve been
active in the association community,
you possess valuable insight that can
help another association professional
overcome a challenge they face. I
encourage you to explore all available
opportunities to engage with your
fellow association professionals, to
build your own network of peers from
which to share ideas and learn from
their experiences.
There’s no greater time to get started
in building your network than the
upcoming OSAP Annual Conference,
held July 20 – 22, 2022 at the Cherry
Valley Hotel in Newark in Explore
Licking County! I know I am looking
forward to it and I hope to see you all
there, too!

More Retirement Plan Reform Around the Corner
By Peggy N. Slaughter, CFP®, CRPS®, AIF®, CPFA
SLAUGHTER
SECURE 2.0
Using what continues to be my least favorite acronym to name a legislative act, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement
Enhancement (SECURE) Act 2.0, passed the House in March 2022 and is likely to pass the Senate by the end of the year. Here
are a few anticipated changes that will affect 401(k) Plans.
$ New 401(k) Plans will be required
to automatically enroll eligible
employees at a rate of 3 percent,
increasing annually to to 10 percent.
Automatic enrollment is currently
voluntary; Plan Sponsors may choose
to elect it. With SECURE 2.0, it will
be mandatory for all new Plans.
Employees can still opt out if they
don’t wish to contribute.
$ Participants can currently make their
contributions on either a pre-tax or
Roth after-tax basis. However, all
employer contributions are considered
pre-tax and will be fully taxable to
the employee at some point. Under
SECURE 2.0, participants will be
able to elect to receive matching
contributions on a Roth after-tax basis,
allowing for tax-free distributions later.
The employer would be required to
record the contributions as taxable
income on the employee’s Form W-2.
$ Likewise, employees who make
catch-up contributions (an additional
$6,500 for those participants age 50
or older) currently may elect pre-tax
or after-tax. Under the Act, all catchup
contributions would be required to
be made on an after-tax basis.
$ The age at which a participant must
begin taking Required Minimum
Distributions (RMDs) increased from
age 70 ½ to 72 under the first SECURE
Act in 2019. Under SECURE 2.0, RMD
age increases to 73 in 2022, age 74 in
2029 and age 75 in 2032.
$ Small businesses (less than 100
employees) starting a retirement plan
for the first time will be eligible for
increased tax credits of up to $5,000
to cover start-up costs. Additionally,
the company may receive a tax
credit up to $1,000 per employee for
employer contributions made during
the first 4 years.
$ Beginning in 2023, part-time
employees who have been employed
for two years must be allowed to
contribute to the 401(k) Plan, even if they
would not otherwise meet eligibility
requirements. Employers are not
required to match these contributions.

Explore Licking County and
End up Somewhere Unexpected
BY DAN MODER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EXPLORE LICKING COUNTY
Licking County
knows hospitality.
It should; it's been honing that skill since 1808. In the
beginning, our form of welcome was a bit more laid back
and, dare we say, untamed. It was the wilderness 214
years ago, complete with horse paths, muddy, rutted,
one-lane stagecoach roads and a landscape dotted
with homesteaders trying to make a go of it. Yes, it was
a bit wild back then, but there was always the notion of
greeting a visitor with the best we had to offer.
In the 21st Century, Licking Countians still subscribe to
and willingly pass along that tradition of hospitality in
a unique fusion of old and new. We've never lost sight
of the old days when a hot meal and a handshake were
the norms and a stranger to town was just "one of us"
until the stagecoach pulled away. We're fiercely proud
that we have retained that mid-western sensibility and
successfully married it with modern-day amenities. It's
the perfect mix for us.
The OSAP Annual Conference is an opportunity for the
collective "us" to iron the good linens, polish the silver and
set the table for you. 2022 is your chance to experience
Licking County hospitality - centuries in the making. We
get it, though, the conference will keep you busy and your
free time will be limited, so we suggest a return visit to
take it all in at your leisure. When we suggest taking "it all
in," we stand by that statement, proud that we have the
third-largest tourism economy in central Ohio.
Your return trip could include a visit to our great
outdoors. Visit the more than 1,600 acres of preserved
and programmed wildlife parks, including the Licking
River's most extensive stretch, famous for its kayakability
and bald eagle roosts. With more than 40 miles
of continuous, paved recreational trails that stretch to
all four corners of the county, your bike is worth bringing
along. Still, need some more nature? The world-famous
Dawes Arboretum fits the bill with 2,000 acres complete
with 16,000 living trees, shrubs, and flower specimens.
You need to eat (and drink) when you vacation, so why
not do it as the locals do? Every city, village and burb of
Licking County offers some of the most eclectic menus.
Each with its own personality, flavor and flair. Nothing
starts the dinner hour (or lunch hour - no judgment from
us) off on the right foot like a happy hour with friends. With
more breweries per capita than Franklin County, we are
always prepared to pour you a glass of our best. More
of a wine person? Licking County offers a selection of
wineries all set in rolling hills or funky downtown locations.
Cherry Valley Hotel and Ohio Event Center is a premier
location for lodging and conferences, but that is just one
of the many lodging options. Historic inns and bed and
breakfasts abound around every corner, living nicely
with more traditional hotel properties. Feel like roughing
it? Tent, camper camping, and everyone's favorite
"glamping" are all options for the more adventurous.
4 ohiosap.org
Licking County has a long history of entertaining. If you
feel like an evening out is in order, we're happy to lift
the curtain in multiple historic theatres and summer
stock playhouses. All of which offer quality, first-rate
performances. Want to get your rumble on? National Trail
Raceway brings the stadium-shaking thunder of nationally
recognized drag racing to the county every summer. Need
some water? Buckeye Lake (Ohio's first state park) is a
tradition in the warmer months. It never disappoints the
water lover or the Landlubber.
CHECK-IN WITH THE GANG AT EXPLORE LICKING COUNTY AT:

The county's network of museums is a must when visiting.
With everything from institutions dedicated to Licking
County's rich heritage of art, science, and industry to our
ongoing efforts to preserve 2,000-year-old American Indian
earthworks. There is bound to be something for everyone.
It's a lot to take in and plan for, so you may need some
help. That's where Explore Licking County becomes your
go-to. Explore Licking County is a modern-day resource
that is most helpful to visitors. Functioning as the county's
convention and visitor’s bureau, Explore Licking County
is a comprehensive collection of the best in Ohio's thirtysecond
county. With curated journeys, great story-telling,
and a robust event calendar, this website is a must-have in
navigating the seven hundred square miles we call home.

What Makes Licking County
the Best Choice for OSAP ‘22
By Mary Ciesa, OSAP 2022 Annual Conference Liaison and OSAP Foundation Board Member
I feel like every year that I write this article, I just end up writing the same
thing over and over again. I guess the reason why is clear: It’s so easy to
support OSAP as it’s the premier organization that supports the work so many
of us do. In fact, I can’t say enough good things about heading to Explore
Licking County and enjoying the Cherry Valley Hotel as our host CVB and host
property for this year. Not only is it someplace we’ve not been in quite some
time, but Cherry Valley Hotel has undergone an amazing renovation with a lot
of great conference space that used to be dedicated to the water park.
It's hard to believe that this is only the second time many of us will be
gathering for a large event since 2019. But, I refuse to focus on the pandemic.
I’m just happy so many of us came on this side of things and that we’re all
committed to moving forward together. That’s what OSAP is – a large family
who happen to occasionally do business with one another. So, that being
said, let’s talk about this year’s OSAP annual meeting, which is happening in
Licking County July 20-22, 2022. Despite all the fun that is in store, I hope
you check out the presenters and the great topics that await you.
When I look back on all the years I’ve been a member of OSAP, I am
amazed at the relationships and connections that the organization has
helped me make both professionally and personally. It’s gotten a lot of
through some dark days and nights. This annual conference allows us to
gather with our peers, learn from and alongside our friends, and did I
mention go to a newly renovated property, which is centrally located in
Ohio so many of us won’t be racking up major mileage costs at a time when
gas is gold? If I am willing to put my name on something, then I want to have
ultimate pride in the product – that includes my career – and my involvement
with OSAP. I’m glad to give it my stamp of approval for one more year!
CIESA
LEARN.
I am committed to lifelong learning and
belonging to an industry that affords me
opportunities to grow and learn more. I do
my best to attend OSAP’s annual conference
every year because the conferences provide
high-quality education – at a great price!
Right now, every dollar counts. This year,
we are offering 15 breakout sessions, in
addition to four general sessions taking
deep dives into issues we’re facing on a
daily basis. You will find no greater return
on your investment than when you attend
OSAP’s annual conference.
NETWORK.
Organizations face a changing landscape
every day; nobody understands that
better than someone who is facing similar
challenges. For three days next month, you
will be surrounded by your peers, and you
will have the opportunity to ask questions,
seek guidance and share best practices. You
will come away with answers and solutions
that you can’t find in a Google search.
Did I mention the annual conference is fun?
While we gather throughout the year for other
education opportunities, the annual conference
is the premier gathering of our Ohio association
community – and you don’t want to miss out.
This is your chance to meet, network and
connect with the industry’s movers and the
shakers – and for them to meet you.
THANK YOU.
We are grateful to Explore Licking County for putting together our evening event on Thursday, July
21 and for creating a tour on Wednesday that we can use to both build relationships with each other
and provide a “thank you” to its business leaders. Thank you to our wonderful committees for putting
together such a great program. Trust me when I say that your hours of work are very much appreciated.
And thank you to our tremendous OSAP staff team – this year’s been much different, but the new team
and the lessons learned will surely benefit Jarrod, our volunteer leaders and, most importantly, us as
members. We knew how hard he worked in the past, but I can assure you that this year, his efforts and
Megan’s head created a great experience that awaits all of us who attend the conference.
GROW
Conversations, discussions and hands-on
learning always creates opportunities to
inspire and drive innovation. This year’s
conference is no different. While we largely
come to the annual conference every year
for the education and the networking, we
also realize that we need to walk away
smarter and more adept at what unforeseen
challenges lie ahead.
I hope you join your peers in Newark at the Cherry Valley Hotel in July.
It’s going to be a great event for Ohio’s association community!

SAM
Glenn
E
very organization faces challenges. Many
are different than the challenges other
organizations face. We have unique members,
differing economic woes and, surely, employment
and workforce challenges. However, according to
this year’s opening keynote speaker, Sam Glenn,
"When we think better, we authentically become
better." Glenn didn’t come to the professional speaker
segment in the normal way, nor did he ever truly have
any intent on becoming a motivational speaker. Yet,
like most professionals in OSAP, he fell in love with
something outside his comfort zone and has since
become a powerhouse in encouraging others to
think better for themselves and their organizations.
In fact, the core of Glenn’s entire program is designed
to recharge, rekindle and inspire new levels of
optimism, purpose, engagement, resilience and
teamwork. While this may sound super simple on
paper, the actual steps on how to empower others
without creating toxic positivity in your organization
is a process he’s developed over 30 years. His
approach is engaging, fun, artistic and provides
actionable content that can be implemented
immediately both personally and professionally.
Since 1998, he has had the privilege of speaking to
just about every industry imaginable. The leaders
and organizations who hire him the most are the
ones that are passionate about rooting for the
success of their people, which is why his presentation
spoke to OSAP and its professional development
committee. The bottom line is the organizations that
select Glenn care about others and understand that
if the organization is going to get better, it starts with
helping others get better.
Glenn’s program is a component that reinforces the
value of OSAP’s mission.
“I believe in the power of recognition, empowerment
and getting people excited about the work they do,”
Glenn said. “Plus, it is so nice to create a moment where
everyone can relax, recharge and just feel good.”
If you want to improve
your organization, it starts
by improving your people.
We hope you’ll find his opening keynote to be just the right thing to kick off OSAP ’22!

THIS YEAR’S KEYNOTE SPEAKERS RECOGNIZE
THE IMPORTANCE OF OPTIMISM AND TEAMWORK
Attitude Matters Most When Confronting Challenges as Strong Leaders Cannot
Lose Sight of their Team’s Value
LAUREN
Sweeny
W
hen it comes to working with talented,
focused professionals, our closing keynote
presenter is perfectly attuned to the leaders of
Ohio’s association community. Lauren Sweeney
understands that people succeed when they view
themselves as a valuable part of a team and also
elevate one another to help the whole rise up
simultaneously.
An activator and a creative thinker with a heart
for public service, Sweeney is disciplined,
coachable and goal-oriented. Additionally,
she is driven by challenges and has a passion
for leadership development and collaboration.
In addition to possessing advanced coaching
certifications, Sweeney also holds a Bachelor of
Science in Community and Regional Development
from UC Davis.
We hope you’ll join us for what promises to
be an exhilarating 2022 annual conference!
Sweeney is focused on building great leaders out
of good leaders, and she strives to help people find
their passion - no matter what that may be. These
are all important sectors of the organization with
whom she works: Rise Up For You, founded by Nada
Lena Nasserdeen, which is an educational and
motivational company that focuses on enhancing
company culture and people development through
teaching soft skills, also known as human skills.
Through the organization’s core principles, which are
educate, inspire, experience and connect, its staff is
dedicated to fostering sustainable growth among
companies and individuals.
In fact, it’s mission is to help serve humanity through
focusing on the most essential component: people.
Sweeney and her colleagues utilize interactive and
experiential events with a special focus on the people,
emotional and social skills needed to be successful in
today’s world personally and professionally.
Given all of the challenges that organizations are
facing on the heels of the pandemic, the ongoing
fighting in Ukraine, the shifts in economic patterns
and so much more we’re witnessing, OSAP felt
that Sweeney is a great way for us to end our
conference: on a high note, celebrating the value of
our members and our people.

Burnout:
Is Your Team Overwhelmed?
From Peg Buehrle & Pete McDowell, ActionCOACH Columbus
Right now, for teams that are on a path to rapid growth,
finding great employees is a tough job. The first thing to
remember is that your #1 job is to act quickly to hire. The last
thing that you want to do is to overwhelm and overwork this
team on which everyone has been able to rely.
So, what is burnout? According to Psychology Today, burnout
is “state of chronic stress that leads to physical and emotional
exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, and/or feelings of
ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment.” Employees and
leaders suffering from burnout are typically less productive,
detached from the team and generally unhappy—all feelings
we don’t want in our workplaces. And all things that employers
don’t want to inflict on their employees or organization that
has the opportunity to do a ton of good for its members.
We know it’s serious, but what can we do to avoid burnout
in ourselves or in our employees? If we’ve gotten to the
point of burnout, what can we do to get that employee
or yourself back?
H E R E ’ S S O M E T I P S :
BUEHRLE & MCDOWELL
STUDY YOUR TIME
Your time is your most valuable asset as is
your employees’ time. One of the first steps
we often do when we have a team that is on
the verge of burnout is to analyze time. Have
everyone on your team keep track of every
little thing they do and how long the task takes.
Start with yourself to provide an example.
What this accomplishes is for you as the leader
to have your eyes wide open to how hard (or
not hard) your team is working. Acknowledge
that each of your team members’ time is
valuable and that they are great employees.
Be aware especially of salaried employees –
they tend to work much more than 40 hours.
After you’ve analyzed where people are
spending their time, ask yourself if employees
are doing more than what you thought. Is
an administrative employee overwhelmed
taking on marketing when all they need is a
little strategy guidance that is outsourced? Is
an employee doing more than asked but not
getting credit for their hard work? Are you
doing tasks that can be delegated to your
team? We see this the most – leaders who are
employees in their own organization, rather
than working on the higher-level vision.
LISTEN
Pay attention to what is happening in your
business. Is an employee who used to always
arrive on or before the time they were
supposed to now coming in late? Are people
calling out sick when this is abnormal? Pay
attention to body language. A burned-out
employee will be easy to spot if you pay
attention. As the leader, make a point to
check in with employees at every level in
all departments regularly. Ask for honest
feedback on the work environment. Even
better, have an outside third party (like a
coach) ask the questions. Employees who are
very loyal are less likely to be honest with their
leader if they have to look them in the eyes
and communicate signs of burnout can be
quickly observed.
If you are the one suffering from burnout,
listen to your mind and body. Have you been
sleeping well? Able to complete that workout?
Are you focused on the task at hand? Are you
grumpier than normal with your loved ones?
All these things mean it’s time to invest in
some help for the sake of you, your family
and your organization.
BURNOUT IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM, BUT IT’S NOT TOO LATE FOR YOU AND YOUR
ORGANIZATION. FIRST, GET YOUR MINDSET ALIGNED, THEN TAKE CARE OF THE
TEAM AROUND YOU. THIS IS CRITICAL TO YOUR LONG-TERM SUCCESS. MAKING
THAT INVESTMENT IS SOMETHING FOR WHICH YOU’LL BE THANKFUL.
SLOW DOWN TO SPEED UP
Most of our clients have so much work they
cannot keep up with hiring, which puts the
employees they do have at risk of burnout.
We’re sure you’ve all seen online or even in
a store near us a sign that says, “Please be
kind to the employees that have shown up
today.” Think about the long-term future of
your organization. While it might be nice to
have an event every day and get thousands
of new members a month, take time to think
of what you can really make great. Member
service, event execution and, ultimately, an
outstanding experience suffer when your
employees are burned out. Quality of care
suffers as well. The last thing you want to do
is to take just one more event and have that
member’s negative experience course like
wildfire throughout your industry, therefore,
hurting your organization in the long run.
People remember negative experiences,
and your organization is not the place to
have one.
Consider doing less events, saying no to
a sponsorship or even shortening your
organization’s work hours. It might just be
what your organization needs to stay healthy
and grow in the long run. Just like your body
needs a rest, so does your team. Take a half
a day and go on a team adventure. Plan
an alignment day – getting on the same
page about culture and vision (ensure this is
facilitated by an experienced third party).
Go to lunch together. Get together for
non-work happy hour. Turn the phones off.
Let the organization heal.

ATTITUDE CHANGES EVERYTHING
Under My Thumb: Regaining Control of Your
Non-Profit’s Social Media
Sam Glenn
If there is one thing for certain in life, it is that
our attitude plays a role in everything – both
personally and professionally. Today, Sam
Glenn is considered one of the leading experts
on the subject of “attitude,” having written
more than 30 books related to this subject.
Attitude Changes Everything 2.0 offers an
enlightening, entertaining and educational
exploration into how our attitude works, what
creates it and feeds it, how to keep it healthy
and finally how to use your attitude to create
positive experiences and stories in life.
This keynote breaks attitude down into
4 primary components:
1. Adjustment – how to adjust our attitude and
keep it headed in the right direction.
2. Instillation - what makes our attitude
function so it works and rewards us.
3. Application – how to partner your attitude
with your skills and efforts.
4. Impact – how to measure the impact of your
attitude.
Sam will highlight some of the following
learning points:
› How to strengthen your attitude with
resilience in times of change, challenge and
uncertainty.
› How to manage negative thoughts and
encounters with others.
› The number one source for infusing your
attitude with positivity
› How to author unforgettable stories and
experiences for yourself and others with
your attitude
› How to reduce stress, fatigue and the blahs
with one simple 30 second trick.

Remember when social media was fun? Those
were the days. Staff turnover, pandemics, trolls
and influencers have made managing media
and messaging messy. Let’s rewind and get this
crucial communication under our thumb.
How?
Using songs from one of the world’s most
famous bands, Farkas will offer tangible tips
anyone can immediately use to do more with
less and rethink the reason we use social
media in the first place.

In today’s social media world, it’s well known
that video is king. For small businesses,
however, factors like small staff, limited
resources and lack of time/expertise may
seem to hinder the ability to produce
video. Often, communicators will avoid
utilizing video because they feel unqualified,
undertrained or unequipped to create video
content. But, with a camera, tripod and a few
video tricks, implementing a video strategy is
easier than you’d think.
In this session, participants will learn how

The session will also include tips for improved
video quality when working with virtual

Changes in staff occur all the time, but many
association executives are long-tenured in
their positions. It’s one thing if an association
executive leaves to take another position or
retires, but what if the worst would happen? If
COVID-19 has taught us anything, it’s that life
changes on a dime. What shape would your
organization be in if the person with years of
institutional knowledge is no longer available
to answer sometimes even basic questions
like how the bills get paid or the payroll
gets processed? Getting all one’s ducks in a
row is essential to ensuring a successful and
smooth leadership transition. Waiting until the
transition has happened is too late to realize
that all the essential institutional knowledge
left with the departing executive. Succession

In today’s ever-changing nonprofit landscape,
it is necessary to possess a deep, strong pool

Engagement and Management
Internationally, the most successful
organizations know positive leadership is
not only effective—it is absolutely necessary.
According to Wharton professor Adam Grant,
when it comes to the best leaders of all-time,
“the most meaningful way to succeed is to
help other people succeed, to advance a
vision or an idea or a project that is bigger
than [themselves], that’s going to affect a lot
of people.”
Simply put, the most effective leaders
understand that, in the words of psychologist,
Chris Peterson, “Other people matter.”
Positive leadership markedly increases
employee engagement, alleviates friction
in high-pressure situations and times of
transition and produces dramatic results.
Leaders who have the skill to develop
high-impact relationships and a culture of
collaboration drive positive change and
innovation, delivering value to customers
and radically improving your organization’s
bottom line. In this keynote session,
participants discover their leadership
strengths and learn new strategies and
techniques for becoming transformational
leaders who can engage employees, inspire
people and build a culture defined by
collaboration and commitment.

For the past four years, Ohio’s association professionals have been coming
together at Association Coffee Talks. Volunteer leaders, membership committee
chairs and devoted OSAP members have made these monthly gatherings a
success. During COVID, we hosted these online, but now we are hosting them as
hybrid events for those who wish to attend in person and for those who find it more
convenient to hop on Zoom. These are great, informal discussions where members
come together to discuss achievements, share insights and connect at a time when
connection often seems difficult. We hope you’ll consider joining us for these great

USE THE APP TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THE 2022 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
For several years, OSAP has worked closely with Results at Hand to build

OSAP Annual Conference. This year will be no different. Kim Harwood
and her team at Results at Hand have been hard at work updating the
mobile app for this year’s conference in Newark.
This relationship affords members access to open, flexible technology that
is on-demand and responsive.
In order to utilize the app, members will need a mobile phone plan that
includes a data plan; but, first, they must download the app to their
smartphones or tablets. Then they will be able to save personal data,
such as notes and profile updates; fetch
the most recent updates and speaker
notes; respond to evaluations; register
for events and much more. You can

EXECUTIVE NEWS
Heading Off to Newark for
the OSAP Annual Conference
By Jarrod A. Clabaugh, CAE, President & CEO, OSAP & OSAP Foundation
Despite all the challenges we’ve faced this past couple of
years, the OSAP Annual Conference continues to afford us
the chance to learn from one another, to grow, to volunteer
and to walk away smarter than we were when we arrived.
Just like our member organizations, OSAP has gone
through some changes this past year. We adopted a
hybrid workplace, held more and more online offerings
and we had staff changes. But we are very excited to
share the hard work that the OSAP Annual Conference,
Professional Development and Membership Committees
have done to bring you great programming this year at the
annual meeting. In fact, in addition to their work, I have
relied immensely on Megan Bourque-Stith, OSAP’s newest
coordinator, membership and programming, who has
been assisting me and members alike since April. Megan
is a bright, compassionate member of the team whose
efforts have made the conference possible.
And it hasn’t been easy. She has worked remotely for
OSAP from her home in Oregon while balancing her young
daughter’s needs and working on a West Coast to Ohio time
zone challenge. You’d never know that she was located
elsewhere from how committed she has been. When you
see her at the conference, please thank her for all the great
work she has been up to. While Megan’s work with OSAP is
scheduled to taper off after the conference, I think she’ll still
be helping us out from time to time down the road.
Her efforts and those of committee members were aligned
to ensure that Explore Licking County and Cherry Valley
Hotel will be able to meet our members’ important needs
and networking expectations.
This year’s conference line-up continues to break down
the silos found in organizations and focuses on staff
engagement, overcoming staffing challenges, boosting
current and prospective member engagement, how to
utilize technology best when on a budget and much more.
Many of our speakers are folks you’ll recognize from years
past, but some are new faces; we hope all of them get you
energized about the future and about how you can best
serve your membership.
This year’s talent will offer insights to help any association,
industry partner and CVB professional no matter the years
of experience in the industry or the niche served. Why?
Because OSAP recognizes that no matter the role, we can
all do better to cultivate our internal leadership mindset.
CLABAUGH
LEARN, NETWORK AND BENEFIT
FROM ONE ANOTHER’S EXPERTISE
Speaking of great things, following on the success of
our previous Brown Bag Raffles, the Ohio Society of
Association Professionals Foundation (OSAPF) is once
again seeking items for donation and inclusion in this year’s
raffle. Let’s knock this year’s contributions out of Licking
County! Please contact OSAP Annual Conference Board
Liaison Mary Ciesa with your thoughts on what you’d like
to donate. You can email her at mary.ciesa@marriott.com.
Remember: All the raffle proceeds go back to the OSAEP
– an industry foundation committed to supporting Ohio’s
association communities that works to “pay it forward” by
offering you greater educational opportunities.
Speaking of opportunities, we are overjoyed to be
heading to Licking County! The Explore Licking County
CVB and the Cherry Valley Hotel have worked tirelessly
with us to guarantee you have an excellent experience at
OSAP ‘22. We can’t wait to see you in Newark July 20-22,
2022. We hope you enjoy your conference experience at
the Cherry Valley Hotel, too! The property has so much
to offer. Its remarkable staff is dedicated to ensuring your
experience there will be unforgettable. When you see
them, please thank them for their commitment to OSAP.
Lastly, I’d just like to say that OSAP understands the
budgetary restrictions you face when planning how to
invest your education development. It’s for this reason we
aim each year to provide a cost-effective and content-rich
conference. None of this would be possible without the
