STUDENTHIGHLIGHTSThe CEAS offers five languages—Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Tibetan, andUyghur—and also Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships tosupport undergraduate and graduate students.14FLAS FEATURE: HANNAH OHGRADUATE FLAS FELLOW, 2021-22EALC M.A. (KOREAN)Why did you choose your degree program and KU?I have a passion for sharing my Korean culture with others. This made me want tolearn Korean formally and earn a degree in EALC to teach not just Korean languagecourses but also culture courses at a college level. There were not many East Asianprograms in the Midwest, especially about Korea. Most programs were limited to Chinaand Japan only. KU was one of the few programs in the Midwest that offered Koreanculture classes.Why is it important to learn another language?Learning a new language is not just about grammar, it involves culture as well. Bylearning a new language, you get to expand your knowledge and have a betterunderstanding of the culture you are studying. If you continue to practice and maintainyour language level, you will be able to connect to more people and broaden theirhorizons.How do you practice your language skills?I practice by using it in my daily life (speaking with my family members), watchingvideos in the language or with language subtitles, and reading in the language I ampracticing. Sometimes, I teach the language unofficially to my friends.Do you have any advice for students wanting to learn a newlanguage?As a visual and auditory learner and an anime lover, watching anime in Japanese (thelanguage I want to practice) with Korean subtitles (the language I am comfortablewith) helped me a lot. Also, I strongly encourage students to take a formal class. Thatway, students can learn and practice the language more frequently and consistently.
