LETTER FROMTHE DIRECTORI hope you and your family have beenholding tight. The prolonged pandemic,uncertain future, and rapid inflation haveled us to a new normal. The Center for EastAsian Studies (CEAS) has been facing thesame challenges. We have been struggling.Nonetheless, our mission—to support ourfaculty and students, reach out to K-16education and community colleges, andconnect with local communities—remainsthe same.After becoming Director last year, I becamekeenly aware that the Center is not just a“home” for many faculty and students atthe University of Kansas. It is also a majorhub for the intellectual community inthe Great Plains. Founded in 1959, the CEAS promotes East Asian languages andarea studies through education, research, and outreach. The CEAS offers Chinese,Japanese, Korean, Uyghur, and Tibetan language training and covers an expansiveworld region that spreads from the Asia-Pacific to Central Asia. Our strength is builtupon 66 faculty across the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professionalschools, a top-ranked library collection (11th among public university East Asianlibraries), and well-established outreach programs.This difficult time has made our commitment to our larger goals even stronger withour new vision, “Global Asia.” By situating Asia in global contexts and understandingAsian ways of thinking and doing, we envision diversifying our dialogues and buildinga more inclusive community. This report showcases examples of our innovationsduring the last year and a half.
