Valley vineyards, many of which don’t have a home when 

it comes time to blend. These blending varieties, such as 

Mourvedre and Grenache, are some of the more 

interesting varieties winemakers get to work with, and it 

always seemed a shame to blend away these orphans. 

Orphelin was born by trying to create a Rhone-style blend 

from these varieties, while showcasing Washington’s true 

potential for Rhone varieties. This wine offers wild fruit 

flavors of Syrah, pepper spice of Mourvedre, red cherry 

flavors of Cinsault and lively acidity of Grenache. Other 

orphans include small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, 

Petit Verdot, Touriga, Pinot Noir and Viognier which also 

contribute distinctive qualities and complexity to this

Columbia Winery Two bottles of 2006 Columbia Valley Syrah, two bottles of 

2009 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and two 

bottles of 2009 Columbia Valley Pinot Gris. Syrah: The 

wine shows bright ruby color with aromas of red fruit, 

spice and black pepper with hints of Portobello 

mushrooms. On the palette, the Syrah exhibits plenty of 

red cherry flavors, with medium acidity and finishes with 

smoky, spicy notes and soft tannins. Cab: Deep garnet 

with ripe cherry on the nose. Ripe cherry with cassis and 

clove on the palate with tobacco on the finish. A wellstructured 

wine that will pair perfectly with a grilled steak. 

Pinot: The 2009 Pinot Gris is beautifully pale straw gold in 

color. Aromas of vibrant orange blossoms, peaches and 

spice. On the palate, bright citrus and ripe melon with a 

touch of spice and cream. A very light and crisp wine, 

nicely rounded in body and texture, with a medium-long 

clean, dry finish.
