Preface
“Your offspring shall be like the dust of the
earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the
east and to the north and to the south, and in you and
your offspring shall all the families of the earth be
blessed ” – Genesis 28:14
The main idea of writing the family history is to know the family
members each other and to live in an atmosphere of full
cooperation and harmony. It is to increase respect between family
members and thereby hoping to live together as a united family. In
ancient days family members were living together or they were
living in one place, not far away from each family. But during the
course of time, family members had to live in various places far
away from their ancestral homes, either for job related matters or
for better prospects. This has resulted in severing the ties with
ancestral home and relatives. In such situations, family history book
is a binding knot between families.
Writing the family history of Kizhaketheruvu Pandalayil
(Pandakasalyil) Family was a daunting task. Enumeration of the
history of family members was an aspiration of many members in
the family, especially of those who have entered into their eternal

life. Writing the previous history of the family or to know the
connections of branches within the family was a difficult
assignment because of the dearth of several elderly members who
know the in and out of older generations. Majority of members
especially those of the younger generations did not know much
about their relatives other than their close cousins. Apart from the
gatherings on occasions such as funerals or marriages,
safeguarding a cordial relationship among family members is also
difficult to many people, particularly in this era of swift lifestyle.
Malayalees especially people belonging to the younger
generations were reluctant to understand and record the family
history. Illegitimate information, anecdotes or stories related to
supernatural aspects, etc may be some of the reasons preventing
many people from carrying out this task. We seldom find people
who know the entire history of any family. Pieces of information
are very important in such situations. This attempt is the result of
the conglomeration of such news’ fragments.
It is difficult to separate the history of Marthoma Sabha from the
history of any Mathoma family as Christian family histories and
church beliefs are firmly united. However, no attempt has been
made to enumerate the same. The details of the reformation
movement carried out in the nineteenth century by Abraham

Malpan of Marmon Palakunnathu Family and Geevarghese Malpan
of Kaithayil Family and the subsequent formation of Marthoma
Sabha can be read out from the history books of the Church. The
formation of Christianity in India and the details about earlier
Christians in India, particularly in Kerala have been detailed-out in
the history books of four ancient Christian families of Kerala such
as Sankarapuri, Kalli, Kalikavu and Pakalomattom. All these History
books contain the incidents related to the gatherings and
settlements of earlier Christians in the renowned Mussiris town and
their subsequent movements and establishments as various
families across Kerala.
Though this history contains the details of the male members of
this family, details of daughters of the first known generation, their
families and children are also enumerated briefly. All details of the
three branches of the Pandakasala Family are not included here. It
was easy to include the details of Piravanthoor branch of
Pandakasala family as their details had already been recorded. The
details of Kampamcode branch are incomplete. We will be able to
include their details in the future. The information currently present
in this ‘Charithram’ has been submitted to all family members for
evaluation and comments.
Several people of this family were involved in this attempt. The
details pertaining to the older generations, such as, names, family

names of husbands, places, names of children, etc. have been
handed over by the member/s of the respective families. We are
expressing our sincere gratitude to each and every one of these
families. Kurian Thomas (Biju), P. Thomas Rajan (Rajan), M.
Thomas Muthalaly, Valsala, Ponnamma and P.B. Kurikesu
(Thampy) deserve special thanks in this regard. Without their
bountiful support, this attempt would not have been completed
even now. We are highly indepted to His Grace Dr. Joshua Mar
Ignathios, the Bishop of Mavelikara Diocese for his generous
gesture in writing a foreword for this ‘Charithram’. Blessings
extended to this Charithram and to the people behind this attempt
by the Marthoma Sabha Kottarakara-Punalur Diocesan Bishop His
Grace Dr. Euyakim Mar Coorilos Episcopa and the Orthodox Bishop
of Kollam, His Grace Zacharia Mar Anthonios Metropolitan are also
thankfully acknowledged. We are also expressing our gratitude to
Rev. P.M. Kurikesu, a Priest of Marthoma Church for his sincere
efforts in introducing the family members and procuring the
photographs of 3-4 generations of Piravanthoor branch. No claim
is made for this attempt as a successful one. Nevertheless, we are
hoping that this attempt will be a motivation to the coming
generations and will act as a stepping-stone for writing the
Kudumba Chairithram far more better than this.
