What kind of fencing to buy?
Most customers spend time deciding what specification of wire to buy & what labour to use
when planning their fence requirements. Whilst this tends to form the main expenditure of
their project, the timber stakes are an afterthought with their cost usually the main issue
prior to purchasing.
Stakes are as important if not more important to the longevity of the fence. Time should be
taken to fully consider the options available before commencing, especially since the EEC
ban on the use of CCA treatment. This very competitive market has numerous variants and
knowing exactly what is on offer can be complex. We have listed some of the options
available to you with a brief description, expected longevity and cost comparison.
(These are guidelines only, no acceptance of liability).
SECTOR 4 & UC4 TIMBER
In ground contact timber insist on a minimum of User class 4 (UC4) 15 year or 30 year
British Standard - User Class 4 & Sector 4
l We certify this timber is manufactured and pressure treated to British Standards BS8417
with a desired 15-year (UC4) service life or 30 year desired life, Sector 4 (S4).
l Certified Redwoods - Larch, Douglas fir, Pine, or a species with an equal or better permeability.
l Dried to a moisture content below 28% before treatment.
l Pressure impregnated with a suitable preservative in line with BS EN Clause 311
to either User class 4 or Sector 4 standards.
l Retention levels in line with BS EN 8417 Clause 311 (Orchards & vineyard use, we
recommend a higher dry salt retention that only sector 4 30 year desired life treatment
offers. This is due to the fertilizer and watering used which can accelerate fungal attack.)
l All UC4 timber has an identification mark defining quality & traceability.
l All UC4 & Sector 4 timber can be accompanied by certificates, showing compliance
to the correct specification. I) moisture content ii) Treatment and retention levels iii)
timber type. (if required these must be requested at time of ordering)
Cost comparison: UC4 is 40% more than merchantable, however with overall life costs
it becomes 50% cheaper. Longevity: 15 years desired life UC4, 30 years desired life S4,
certified to BS8417
Creosoted pressure treated: this age old process has long been the choice of many
orchards and equestrian establishments. This product is treated to the same stringent
guidelines as UC4 and should offer a desired minimum life of at least 15 years.
Cost comparison: 80% more than merchantable Longevity: desired life in excess of 15 years
Chestnut timber: English coppiced woodlands provide an annual source of natural
hardwood fencing timber. Chestnut coppiced in the winter will give the longest life.
Supplied in various sizes. Cost comparison: Equal to merchantable. Longevity: 15+ years.
Merchantable quality: A merchantable quality is a mixed species of selected white and
redwoods, spruce, poplar & pine mixture, treated to market guidelines. Whilst every care
is taken to comply with the guidelines, without the costly exercise of kiln drying and the
short window of opportunity to treat whitewood, it is not possible to offer a guarantee on
the longevity of this product. Due to market demands and competitive pressures this type
of timber tends to be price sensitive and although will suit many situations, any doubt to
its longevity or application, then User Class 4 or Sector 4 kiln dried timber should be
purchased. Cost comparison: competitive. Longevity: Subject to ground conditions,
timber species and treatment, we are unable to state a desired life.
