history with finer harmonies
than Crosby, Stills, Nash &

They’ll be telling the story of
how the world’s greatest
supergroup formed, as well
as playing songs by The
Hollies, The Byrds and
Buffalo Springfield.
Turn on and tune in as The
Marrakesh Express take their
audience back to a time of

SHAPARAK
KHORSANDI
Sunday 4th September
8pm
£16
This is Shaparak
Khorsdandi's new show: It
Was The 90's!
It was the decade where
Shaparak left an important
part of her brain somewhere
in a field in Hampshire…
From indie discos to
unflattering crop tops…a trip
down memory lane to the
decade where ‘kinky’ was
nurse roleplay and whipped
cream, and Shaparak found
herself flying about London
with hope in her heart, a
tenner in her pocket and
spare knickers in her
handbag.
How does the decade of
binge drinking and walks of
shame look without
snakebite and black tinted
specs?
Using the sharp wit which
has landed appearances on
Mock The Week, 8 Out Of
10 Cats, Have I Got News
For You, QI, Just a Minute
and Live At The Apollo, this
new show gives one of the
UK’s finest comedians a rare
opportunity to look back.

combine the gypsy jazz
virtuosity of Django
Reinhardt and the hurricane
riffage of Jimi Hendrix? It’ll

Remi’s talent took him from
busking on the streets to
some of the world’s most

SIMON PARKER:
RIDING OUT
Friday 23rd September
7.30pm
£15
Simon Parker is an awardwinning
travel writer and
broadcaster who has
reported from well over 100
countries by the age of 34
for the BBC, The Telegraph
and Amazon Prime.
As Britain entered its first
Lockdown, Simon set off
from the northernmost point
of Shetland with only a
sleeping bag and camping
stove, cycling 3,427 miles
around Britain. En route, he
met hundreds of people -
farmers, fishermen, artists,
who were all, in their own
way, riding out the storm.
Riding Out is a story of
hope, and a portrait of
Britain transforming from a
country in crisis to a nation
on the mend. From Shetland
to Scilly, Dover to Durness,
Simon learnt that life’s
sharpest corners are best
navigated at the gentle pace
of a bicycle.

MUSIC OF JAMES
TAYLOR
Saturday 1st October

‘Fire and Rain’ are not a

they are six of the North’s
finest musicians coming
together to play the
soundtracks of our lives.
They’re returning to the
Courthouse after their soldout
Carole King homage in
2019. This year’s
performance will be
celebrating the music of six
time Grammy awardwinning
songwriter James
Taylor. It’s no surprise that it
takes great ability to play the
music of such a mercurial
talent.
Expect the classic James
Taylor songs like Fire and
Rain, Shower the People,
Steamroller and many more
played with skill, passion,
emotion, humour and

pondering the kindness of

But this year when the snow
begins to melt Jack’s magic
fades, turning him into just
an ordinary boy.
In this wintery tale, Jack
searches for winter and

who share their own

will Jack’s return?

EXHIBITION ON
SCREEN: MUNCH
Sunday 13th November
7.30pm
£9 Standard
£8 Courthouse Friends
In 2013, all of Norway
celebrated the 150th
anniversary of the birth of
Edvard Munch (1863 –
1944), one of the towering
figures of modern art.
Global interest was huge –
not least as a result of one of
his four The Scream
paintings having recently set
a public art auction record
of $120 million. Munch 150
was co-hosted by the
National Museum and the
Munch Museum in Oslo.
With 220 paintings on
show, it brought together the
greatest number of Munch’s
key works in one place.
This film went behind-thescenes
to show some of the
process of putting the
exhibition together – as well
as providing an in-depth
biography of a man who
lived from the mid-19th
century right through to the
German occupation of
Norway in the Second
World War. This is your
opportunity to enjoy a 'oncein-a-lifetime
show' all over
again.

CLASSIC
14th, 15th and 16th November

After successfully quizzing our way virtually through the

Each team can have a maximum of 6 members.
Why do we cry when we feel sad, tense up when we feel
angry, blush when we feel embarrassed? In Charles
Darwin's extraordinary book, ‘The Expression of the
Emotions in Man and Animals’, published 150 years ago
this year, he sought to answer these questions and more.
Led by Gregory Radick, Professor of History and
Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds, this
guided reading will discuss key chapters from the book to
explore how Darwin turned our emotional expressions into
evidence for human evolution.

The Earth is warming, with present and future changes in
our climate being of global concern.
Occurring before humans inhibited the Earth, these often
dramatic and rapid changes in climate were driven by a
range of natural processes, controlling the habitability of
our planet and its associated biodiversity. In this talk we
will look at the geological record of climate change, how
these changes impacted life on Earth, and how this can
help us better understand our present and future climate.
At our Science Cafe, each speaker has a quarter of an hour
to talk, then you, the audience take over. Whether you want
to grill a speaker about generalities or pose a particular
problem, the floor is yours to ask the questions. Our cafe is
the place to sample new ideas as well as something from
the bar!

Join Marty Jopson, Otley’s resident science bloke, as he
places himself in grave personal danger. Watch in horror
as he sets fire to his own hand, introduces the audience to
the Pendulum of Doom, explains how to play a tune with
two million Volts, the science of seriously loud explosions
and the maths of a karate chop.
When the scientist Florence Bell died in 2000, her
occupation was recorded as ‘housewife’. Yet in 1938, as a
young physicist working at the University of Leeds, she had
shown, for the first time, that X-rays could be used to
reveal the regular, ordered structure of DNA. So who was
Bell, and why has one of science’s most important figures
disappeared into the shadows of history?
A new gene editing technology called CRISPR has turned
humanity into gods, enabling us to manipulate the genes
in virtually any organism with exquisite precision. But
CRISPR is just the latest, giant leap in a long journey to
master genetics. The Genetic Age shows the astonishing,
world-changing potential of the new genetics and the
possible threats it poses, sifting between fantasy and the
reality when it comes to both benefits and dangers.
Matthew Cobb is Professor of Zoology at the University of
Manchester and the presenter of the BBC radio series
‘Genetic Dreams, Genetic Nightmares’.
Get down to this year’s Science Fair for stalls,
demonstrations, and great experiments to try out. The
Courthouse will be alive with local and regional groups
showing off the best science Yorkshire has to offer. From
physics to biology and engineering to wildlife, there
really is something for everyone! Cakes, teas, coffees,

THE SECOND

When Shakespeare died, he
famously left his wife Anne
only one thing – the second

play, full of both
humour and pathos, has
received great critical
acclaim since its premier at
the Swan Theatre Worcester

Liz Grand stars as Anne
Hathaway on the night of
Shakespeare’s funeral. The
wake has finished, the
mourners have all gone

remember her life with the
most talented playwright the
world has ever seen. Or was
he? Did he write the plays?
His widow would know if
anybody did. Wouldn’t she?

that comes down to Grand’s
compelling performance' -

Father Earth is the true story
of one man’s attempt to help
save the planet, by
converting a derelict church
on the Orkney Isles into an
eco-friendly recording
studio. It’s also a fascinating
study of a psychological
power struggle between a
character comedian –
Graham Fellows, and his
long-standing creation –
John Shuttleworth.
Father Earth is also about
family relationships –
specifically between fathers
and sons – and it explores
how in our battle against
extinction, we are often
distracted by personal and
family issues, as they appear
more important and
pressing than the future of
the planet.

Inspired by Maeterlinck’s
Bluebird, this show raises
important philosophical
questions for children and
adults within a compelling,
interactive quest adventure.
What is the bluebird and
where could it be hiding? In
the Land of Memory, the
Future, the Land of Luxury or
has it flown to the Land of
Night? Or have we simply
lost the ability to see or hear
it?

invention & oodles of charm.’

Veteran entertainer Terry
Brook formed a Skiffle
group with his sister in 1957.
Next thing he knew, he was
playing bass for the
Shadows’ Jet Harris and
touring with Little Richard,
Sam Cook, Gene Vincent
and Del Shannon. The
Beatles even joined for a
show in The Beatles joined
for a show at the Liverpool
Empire.
Turning to comedy in the
late 1960's, he became
frontman with the Rockin
Berries. There were TV
appearances and seasons at
the London Palladium
supporting Tom Jones and
Frankie Vaughen followed
by a tour with Sacha Distel
and Olivia Newton John.
Now, after a successful solo
career, Terry's teamed up
with his son Terry Jr. to bring
you the very best of the
Everly Brothers. This is a
‘one night only’
extravaganza of nostalgia, a
celebration of rock ‘n’ roll
era with sharp harmonies
and even sharper suits.

After a three year gap due to
the pandemic, we can finally
welcome back students from
Leeds Conservatoire
(formerly the Leeds College
of Music).
They'll be performing
recitals that are testament to
variety in the Courthouse's
classical music programme.
Whether it's solo music or
chamber music,
instrumentalists or vocalists,
you'll get the chance to hear
great talents at the start of
their careers.
Four times nominated in the
BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards
and double winners of the
Spiral Earth Awards,
Megson draw heavily on
their Teesside heritage to
create a truly unique brand
of folk music.
The husband and wife duo
bring an infectious mix of
heavenly vocals, lush
harmonies and driving
rhythmic guitars. Comprising
Debs Hanna (Vocals,
Whistle, Piano Accordion)
and Stu Hanna (Guitar,
Mandola, Banjo), Megson
have gained notoriety on the
British folk scene, not only
for their arresting and
intelligent songwriting, but
for their exquisite
musicianship and northern
humour. They’ve even made
time to collaborate with the
likes of Sam Kelly and Show
of Hands.
