Comprehension and Language Activities for Lower Primary
Book 2
With the increasing demands being made upon the classroom teacher there is a
limit to the amount of preparation an individual teacher can do for any area. The
Language area is one of the most important and complicated to prepare for,
making the task even more difficult.
This series of three books present a selection of work packages incorporating a
short story and a number of comprehension and language activities related to
that story. They have been sequenced in level of difficulty and lend themselves to
individual, group or whole class activities. The more able students will be capable
of doing many activities with little direction while the teacher assists less able
students.
We hoped that these books will be a welcome relief to the many lower primary
teachers who spend countless hours preparing worksheets for their students.
AT THE LAKE
Ken and Fay went to the lake to
see the ducks. There were lots
of trees by the lake. The trees
were cool and green. Fay and
Ken saw lots of ducks and birds.
Some of the ducks were by the
trees. Some of them had little
ducklings swimming with them. Fay and Ken took
a bag of buns to feed the ducks. The ducks love
to eat buns.
Ken took three small boats with sails on them. He
was going to sail his boats on the lake. Ken likes
to see his boats sailing in the wind, going very fast.
Fay took two balls to play with. She played by the
'Oink, oink' says the mother pig.
'Come here,' she calls to her babies.
Mother pig has six piglets. A group
of piglets is called a litter. The piglets
live in a sty. They like to roll and play
in the mud. The farmer feeds the pigs every day.
Sometimes he gives them scraps from his kitchen.
The piglets run and jump in the sunshine. They dig
in the sand and run after the fluffy yellow chicks
that peck the ground looking for worms. The
piglets are fat and pink with little curly tails. They
drink milk from their mother. Soon they will be old
enough to drink water from the big bowl in the
corner of the pigsty.
The Pet Rabbit
It was Jane's birthday. Mum and
Dad had a surprise for Jane. The
surprise was in the backyard. She
ran outside to see what was there.
She looked by the shed. 'It's not here,' said Jane.
'I'll go to the garage,' she said. 'I can't find it,' said
Jane. She ran to the tree.
'There's something under this rug', said Jane. 'Oh,
a pet rabbit. Thank you very much', she said to
Mum and Dad. 'He's lovely and soft with a fluffy
tail. I'll look after him very well,' she promised. 'I'm
Come to the Fair! Come to the Fair!
I like going to the Fair. I save up all my
pocket money to take to the Fair.
Mum takes me in the car. Some people
catch the train to the Fair.
I like to have rides on all the fun things.
My favourite rides are the Ferris wheel
and the ghost train. I like the bumper
cars too.
Mum's going to buy me a hot dog for lunch. I might
have some candy floss too. We can sit on the grass
eat our lunch. I like watching the farm tractors and
