SHEILA CADIGAN: He was in ’86. Danny Glover was also there, but he was there in ’87 as<br />

well in the pictures <strong>with</strong> Juliette Binoche and Norman Mailer. These are just pictures that I’m<br />

drawing on.<br />

JEANNETTE SHAHEEN: Juliet Binoche came for a film <strong>with</strong> Leos Carax, and he was a very<br />

young Parisian filmmaker who, I don’t think has done very much since then, and they were<br />

boyfriend and girlfriend, and she was starting to make The Unbearable Lightness of Being.<br />

JEANNETTE ETHEREDGE: No, I think she already made it.<br />

JEANNETTE SHAHEEN: She didn’t speak much English.<br />

JEANNETTE ETHEREDGE: She was a doll. He was awful.<br />

MIGUEL PENDÁS: She came over, she was in the kitchen over here.<br />

JEANNETTE SHAHEEN: Yes. And that was the year we were back in the kitchen drinking<br />

pepper vodka out of coffee mugs. And pickled tomatoes. And something else.<br />

JEANNETTE ETHEREDGE: We had Alexei German, the Russian director, sitting here in this<br />

booth.<br />

JEANNETTE SHAHEEN: His translator was there <strong>with</strong> his pickles. It was the first time I ever<br />

had them. And Rose Kaufman was back there <strong>with</strong> us, and that was year we were drinking huge<br />

mugs of pepper vodka.<br />

JEANNETTE ETHEREDGE: Yeah, straight shots.<br />

JEANNETTE SHAHEEN: But Danny Glover, I also want to say, we did an evening <strong>with</strong> him<br />

early on. He was the one—and he was a celebrity. Local here. Here it’s like New York—you see<br />

a celebrity, people just leave them alone. But he would come to the Festival just to see films. On<br />

his own, and he would get the biggest bucket of popcorn you ever saw and a soda and just mind<br />
