Town twinning
Past, present and future
Where and when
Your bumper diary of events

Welcome
Contents
The town twinning movement sprang from the ashes of the Second World War.
Its importance at the time cannot be understated. At least 40 million people
were dead, millions more maimed, much of Europe and the Far East in ruins and
countries bankrupt, after history’s most catastrophic conflict.
Never again! That was the passionate vow of mayors and citizens across Europe.
Shropshire was very much part of this humanitarian movement. Many of its towns
name a European partner or two on their welcome signs. In this issue, we examine
Bridgnorth’s associations with Germany and France.
In the early years of the 21st century, twinning looked to be losing relevance.
The war was fading into a monochrome mist and the EU flourished, its citizens
moving freely between member states. There was even one flag and, thanks to
the spread of US culture, virtually everyone spoke English.
The UK, though, wanted out.
Brexit has left our relationship with Europe at a crossroads, in danger of rekindling
old resentments. Yet, in a troubled world, we surely need our friends like never
before. The twinning movement has never felt more important.
Peace of mind

Ian Thomas talking through the
various options with a customer
Stone cold radiators and an icy shower
are not what anyone needs in the depths
of winter, when it’s zero outside.
Boiler breakdown and central heating failure are a curse
of modern living. Especially if the system has sprung a leak
and dirty water is spewing out. Dialling up an emergency
plumber can be expensive – even assuming you can find
one at short notice. And a new boiler can cost thousands.
It is the last thing anyone needs on top of already soaring
energy bills.
It is why proper maintenance of your heating system has,
perhaps, never seemed more important.
Shropshire-based central heating specialists Gasco (UK)
Ltd certainly appreciate this. The innovative company
appreciates that, at a time of fuel insecurity, what many
customers crave is peace of mind. That if their system
does break down, they won’t be left out in the cold.
It is why this go-ahead family company has developed a
range of care packages in which central heating and hot
water systems are comprehensively serviced and kept in
good working order. And if the worst happens and they
do break down, an engineer is just a phone call away.
“The heating system is an expensive part of your home
and it makes sense to keep it in working order and get
the most out of it. It can have a long life if it is looked
after,” says Gasco Managing Director Steve Thomas.
“Regular servicing of your gas appliances ensures that
they are running safely and using the correct amount of
gas, saving you money in the long run. It also brings you
reassurance that a specialist will be there to help should
you find yourself without heating or hot water.”
What’s not changed is our core belief
in customer satisfaction. We focus
on providing a professional, safe and
cost-effective service.
Gasco packages range from £10 a month – covering an
annual service and breakdown call-outs – to just under
£25 a month for Total Care which includes call-outs to
boiler breakdowns and central heating system faults, an
annual service, cost of replacement parts and labour and
a £250 contribution towards a new boiler should one
be necessary.
“As well as our cover plans, we also offer one-off boiler,
gas fire, multipoint water heater and wall heater service
and repairs,” Steve adds.
4

Though this emphasis is on looking after existing
systems, the company remains a specialist in boiler
installation, accredited by one of the top manufacturers
Worcester Bosch.
“Whether your existing boiler has broken, or you’re
looking to upgrade to a more efficient model, all our
surveys are free and there’s no obligation to buy,”
Steve says. “We don’t use sales-people, we send a fully
qualified gas engineer to prepare your quote. Every quote
is a fixed price and, even if we find the unexpected during
your installation, you won’t pay a penny more.”
Monthly payment plans for new boilers are available,
recognising that some households are hard-pressed at the
moment and appreciate help in spreading the cost.
“We generally recommend that the customer seeks at
least three quotes, though naturally we hope they choose
us,” adds Steve with a smile.
The Bridgnorth-based company was founded in 1986 and
has built a solid reputation for providing central heating
solutions throughout Shropshire and the West Midlands.
Gasco steadily grew over the years until it was acquired in
2013 by Steve and his brother Ian, who took it to the next
level with an injection of fresh ideas.
“What’s not changed is our core belief in customer
satisfaction. We focus on providing a professional, safe
and cost-effective service, and are proud of our 99%
customer care rating,” Steve says. “Though we have gained
a whole new generation of customers, we are proud of
the fact that nearly a quarter of our customer base have
been using our services since 1986.”
Another source of pride is that two-thirds of new business
comes via recommendations from satisfied customers.
“As the company has grown organically, it means that we
haven’t lost sight of the qualities that we pride ourselves
on, like politeness, arriving on time, clean appearance and
honest service,” Steve says.
Ian is pivotal to that approach as he is often the face of
the company on the doorstep. A fully qualified heating
engineer, who has been with the company since 2006,
he oversees the day-to-day running of the team and
carries out many of the home visits to prepare quotes
for new boilers.
Gasco serves more than 3,000 homes every year within
a radius of 40miles of Bridgnorth and it’s 10-strong team
gives it a flexibility in service which benefits the customer.
It also means Gasco (UK) Ltd can rival the ‘big boys’ like
British Gas for service while remaining small enough to
provide the personal touch that so many customers value.
It’s the perfect combination!
LOVE LOCAL
Author, photographer, artist, jewellery
creative therapist and so much more
– Jo Jukes packs a lot into her life.
Neil Thomas met her to find out more.
LOVE LOCAL
Jo Jukes takes a stroll through Much Wenlock
The shadows of the past loom large in the life of Jo Jukes.
She loves to walk in the footsteps of those who inhabited
Shropshire thousands of years ago, to gaze upon what
they gazed upon, to imagine their primitive existence –
and capture it all in words and pictures.
The Much Wenlock author’s acclaimed book, Finding
Home (Journeys with the Hillforts of Shropshire), is about
to have its third print run after the first two – totalling
nearly 1,000 copies – have virtually sold out.
The reason for the book’s popularity becomes apparent
within the first few pages, for Jo brings the history
of these Iron Age settlements to life. To colourful
descriptions and archaeological insights, she adds a
rare spirituality.
The front cover of
Jo's acclaimed book, Finding Home
Jo lists 77 hillfort sites
in Shropshire, of which
50 are accessible, the
remainder being lost
under the plough or to
modern development.
Those that can be
reached, she has
stood atop to, as she
explains, “explore
the atmosphere
and feelings that
these ancient
places evoke”.
As a former
English and
History teacher,
Jo appreciates
only too well
the connections between past and present – that, for
instance, the Iron Age Cornovii tribe, whose capital
was a hillfort on the Wrekin, are as much a part of the
Shropshire story as you and I.
Jo explores how alliances were forged and communities
developed, primarily in the daily struggle for survival –
safety in numbers! – but also to feed the human need for
sociability, to share emotional experiences and inspire
artistic endeavours.
“When you see cave paintings that are tens of thousands
of years old, you are seeing the earliest examples of
the very human desire to leave something of ourselves
behind, to say ‘my life meant something, I mattered, I was
part of the human story, your story’. That’s a powerful link
between those cave artists and us today,” Jo reflects, as
we talk in the kitchen of her elegant period home just a
short stroll from beautiful Wenlock Edge.
“I’m not just interested in how daily life was on the
hillforts but in the mysticism that envelops them. Why, in
our modern world with all its technological advances, are
so many of us drawn to these sites? They certainly have a
magical feel, where you can almost step outside of your
21st century life.”
Jo Jukes is a woman of many talents – writer of prose and
poetry, painter, photographer, jewellery maker, Shiatsu
and Tai Chi practitioner and creative therapist, to name a
few. In her mid-fifties, she exhibits a youthful energy and
enthusiasm for trying new skills.
“Education doesn’t end when you leave school. It’s fun
and stimulating to learn new things, to keep learning
every day.”
“When you see cave paintings that
are tens of thousands of years old,
you are seeing the earliest examples
of the very human desire to leave
something of ourselves behind.
“
Jo brings a heightened intensity to all she does and a
genuine appetite for life. Which is, perhaps, unsurprising,
for when she was 26, she was diagnosed with bone cancer
and given a fortnight to live.
“I was always active and enjoyed walking, climbing and
water sports but I was starting to get pain in my hips
which was gradually slowing me down. It was getting so
bad that I had to return early from a teaching post in Sri
Lanka with VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas). I had tests
and was given the devastating prognosis.
“Education doesn’t end when
you leave school. It’s fun and
stimulating to learn new things,
to keep learning every day.
“
“When you measure your life in days, it can be very hard
to focus. I told myself that even though I was so young,
I’d already packed a lot into my life. It was the only way I
could think of to cope.”
Jo started a course of treatments, including chemotherapy
and the weeks became months. The illness changed her
life in another fundamental way, as they left Jo’s native
North for a new home in Dudley, near her husband
Andy’s family.
“My life expectancy was short and it was important to be
nearer that network of support.”
For Sheffield-born Jo, it was a huge wrench to leave the
friends, family and landscapes – dales, peaks and lakes –
she’d loved as a child and young woman.
However, importantly, she was given the chance of
a pioneering bone marrow operation. And her life
changed again.
“It was all very new back then. The first person to undergo
it had survived, the second person died. I was the third.
And here I am, nearly 30 years later cancer-free,” she says,
breaking out into a sunshine smile.
As she grew stronger and, in time, fully recovered, she
longed to escape the West Midlands urban sprawl.
“Andy knew Shropshire from his childhood and it seemed
to offer everything I needed – the Severn for kayaking,
Mitchell’s Fold stone circle for my love of standing stones,
The Stiperstones reminding me of my climbing days on
Stanage Edge in the Peak District, and the Long Mynd and
Clee Hills, with an abundance of heaths and hillforts to
explore. We moved here and I’ve never regretted it.”
You might imagine that Jo’s life-threatening disease
and painful treatment would be more than enough for
one family to contend with. In its wake, though, came
another shattering diagnosis. Andy has been living with
Parkinson’s Disease for 12 years now. Rare in one as young
as he, his gradually worsening condition has hampered
his career as a drama teacher, though ironically the trend
for more online-based home-working, brought about by
the pandemic, is helping him to stay engaged with a life
he loves.
And there has been much joy in the Jukes household
this summer when son Sam graduated in drama – it’s in
the blood, after all – and launched his career as a
professional actor.
LOVE LOCAL
Jo at work on a painting
Out of the family’s health challenges arose in Jo a deep
interest in the idea of creative therapy for mental
wellbeing and tackling learning difficulties.
“I genuinely believe that everyone has an artistic
talent of one kind or another and it’s a case of tapping
into it. For those with low self-esteem, art can build
self-confidence.”
It is a belief that Jo puts into practice at regular creative
retreats that she helps to deliver at various locations,
the most recent of which was a tree-themed event
at Llanberis in North Wales. Before that, there was
a weekend in the Yorkshire Dales in June.
Central to the creativity she encourages is the natural
world. She hands out objects connected to nature –
a pebble, for instance, or a feather – and invites the group
to first study it closely before encouraging them to talk
individually about it.
“The pebble, for instance, might bring back a childhood
memory of walking on a beach with a much-loved
grandparent long ago, the feather might conjure the
image of a fledged bird. They talk about the object
Wrekin on Fire, oil on canvas
– shape, weight, colour, pattern, texture and what it
makes them think of. And it works! When you give
people the opportunity to express themselves and make
social connections, they feel good. Confidence builds.
From there, we go on to produce artistic work, again,
often about everyday objects linked to the natural world.
So, members of the group draw or paint what they see,
write about what is before them and, before you know it
and almost without them realising, they have produced
a piece of art. And that sense of accomplishment is very
uplifting and life enhancing
“I genuinely believe that everyone
has an artistic talent of one kind
or another and it’s a case of
tapping into it.
“
“It is about making it safe, creating an environment where
people feel secure enough to open up, knowing they
won’t be judged.
“I recall vividly a mother coming up to me to thank me
for the change in her daughter, who had suffered from
a lack of self-belief about her artwork. I recall her words
now – she said ‘you have restored my daughter’s creativity
and love of drawing’. From my point of view that’s
incredibly satisfying.”
Jo’s enthusiasm clearly inspires her ‘students’ and her
background as a teacher – including being a SENCO
(Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) – gives her a
valuable professional skills’ set.
11

LOVE LOCAL
Enamels, silver and copper jewellery
The natural world is central to Jo’s life. On the day we
met, she’d spent part of the morning marvelling at and
photographing bees buzzing around flowers in her garden.
Her regular Facebook posts evoke this effusive love for
nature as well as providing a snapshot of the sharply
descriptive writing style that infuses her prose and poetry
and was instrumental in Finding Home’s success.
For instance, of the weekend in the Dales Jo writes,
“For me, this felt like the best 'work'. It was nourishing,
enlightening, supportive and reciprocal. Working with
wonderful people in a sacred, ancient landscape was such
a joy. We were held under the gaze of Ingleborough, a
very special mountain and hillfort for me.
“As humans we can connect to the natural world
around us and celebrate our oneness with all life, from
the sweetly-scented orchids, the bee-filled wildflower
meadows, the lichen-patterned stone walls and the
wind-challenged ash trees, to the limestone pavements,
the boulder-strewn river Ribble and dapple-gladed
waterfall. There is so much to celebrate when we
truly look.”
Jo is an imaginative artist in several media, with an eye for
the abstract and a particularly striking use of colour. She
is an accomplished photographer – her black and white
images illustrate Finding Home – and a talented designer
of jewellery pieces.
She does, though, intend to concentrate more on writing
from now on, with another book, Finding Beauty – A Year
of Nature Outside Your Door, due out in November.
It focuses on the natural world and our connection with it.
While that draws our attention to the wealth of nature
literally outside our front doors – such as the bees she
photographed on the day of my visit – a future book may
further explore humans’ impact on the natural world.
“I’m really into industrial archaeology, though I’m not
an archaeologist. Coming from Sheffield, mining and
steelworks are in my blood and I’m fascinated by our
industrial heritage and the influences of man on the
landscape,” Jo explains. “It’s actually another aspect
of Shropshire that I love, its place at the heart of the
Industrial Revolution. In fact, I was involved at Blists Hill
Victorian Museum on the re-enactment side.”
“The natural world is central to Jo’s
life. On the day we met, she’d spent
part of the morning marvelling at
and photographing bees buzzing
around flowers in her garden.
“
12

Jo is also a prolific poet and a future project may well entail compiling an anthology. So, what better way to end than
with a particularly striking example of her work. This is the poignant and nostalgic There’s a Place, in which she shares
a childhood memory infused with a deep love of nature – and of how that memory warms her heart to this day.
LOVE LOCAL
There’s a place I go to.
I’ll take you there, if you promise to keep it a secret…
Down the steep Cinder Hill,
Past the last houses on the estate.
Along the narrow lane now,
lined with blackberry bushes,
that prick my fingers
and stain them deep purple
with scrumpers' dye in autumn.
Past the hare field on the right.
One, two, three, black tipped ears,
bobbing up out of the long grass.
Golden brown in the sun,
dark and grey in the shade.
There’s a little stepping-stones brook here too,
where I always dare to jump, do you?
Past the blind, serpentine, ‘peeping’ bend,
that slows my bike, once I learn to ride it,
Even more than the steep hill or slippery ice.
Then I’m here again.
At the place where the old farm sits, in guarding position.
The other girls are dutifully indoors, playing with dolls.
My mother thinks I am at Kay’s, such a nice girl.
But I am here, on my own, entering the deserted barn.
My own dare.
Musty and stinky and shuffling with rats and goodness
knows what…
I have to go and check you see.
Eyes adjusting to the dark now,
careful where I tread,
amongst the fallen roof timbers and stone rubble.
I look down and see the signs, pick up the clue.
I’m a good detective.
A cylindrical pellet of fur and bones,
a trail laid just for me,
like gingerbread crumbs through the forest.
I look up to the rafters.
Find the central beam and chink of light.
There, to the side, on the stone plinth, can you see?
Ghost bird. Athena’s bird.
My football team’s mascot.
Looking down at me again, oh, those eyes…
I must remember to breathe, but quiet!
I step on a twig with a snap.
And out she goes, in a rush of air.
No sound on those silent wings.
A stealth pilot flying over the fields again.
Quartering, as the leverets freeze in their scrapes,
Radar searching for mice and voles and shrews.
This barn is my place, mine and hers.
I dream that one day, I will live here,
on this plot between owl and hare,
field and brook.
I still go there often, in my mind.
All these years later, each time I see a barn owl.
Visiting the ruin, that is now a luxury farm conversion.
Fancy sports car parked outside, walled and gated within.
No opening, no plinth, no roosting spot.
But I am there, whenever I close my eyes.
I recall the smell.
The whiteness of feathers.
The piercing but patient gaze,
The movement of air as she skimmed the top of my head.
Watching, waiting, rewarded with the sight,
In that forbidden, secret time, all to myself.
To dream,
as I dream now,
of how the world first was, for me.
Trader. This index of firms who follow best practice
at all times also features real-world reviews from
clients – so you can get a genuine feel for the way a
company operates.
A visit to Bridgnorth Windows’ Which? Trusted Trader
profile reveals that the team earn five-star review after
five-star review for their attitude, skills and for the
finished product – whether windows, doors, garden
rooms or conservatories.
Bridgnorth Windows’ tradesmen are all experts and
craftsmen with years of experience. Managing Director
Martyn is himself a stonemason, and he carefully selects
his team. The company offers a comprehensive array of
windows, double glazing solutions, doors, conservatories
and orangeries across a huge range of styles and finishes.
Take bifold doors for instance. Bridgnorth Windows’
Origin aluminium folding sliding doors are made to
measure with a huge range of sliding and folding
configurations to suit your property.
14

“Our unique free-glide running system uses near
frictionless, maintenance-free needle roller bearings
encased in tough nylon making all our doors a breeze to
open or close. With so many design options available our
doors can be customised to suit every home. And ultra
slim sight lines between the glass make our doors more
elegant, as well as maximising the lighter, airier feel,”
Martyn says.
As well as enhancing your home, conservatories and
orangeries can, of course, expand your living space too.
“Our range of orangeries, for instance, encompasses
some very varied designs. The classic orangery design
had stone parapet walls containing large vertical sliding
sash windows such that the glass area on the sides was in
excess of 75%. They had a glass roof on timber rafters and
were usually separate from the main house.
“Today the term orangery has become fuzzier, referring
to a largely glazed building with a glass roof. The orangery
is now often attached to the main house and used as
room as well as for plants. Additionally, many orangeries
are no longer built out of stone but primarily out of
timber. In many respects today’s orangery combines
the best features of a traditionally built room extension
with the benefits of living under glass, as afforded by a
conservatory or sunroom.”
Martyn knows his team will always complete every job to
their customer’s satisfaction.
“If there are problems along the way, we’ll resolve them,”
he adds. “We value word of mouth recommendations,
so our reputation is our bond, and we’ll go to any
lengths to ensure our customers are completely satisfied.
Any project can experience challenges along the way, and
we’re always ready to address them and to seek a solution
realistically and with good humour.”
The value of getting things right first time is illustrated by
the fact that Bridgnorth Windows is occasionally called in
to fix problems caused by other fitters, including replacing
conservatories that were not fit for purpose.
Martyn explains, “Some of the work we see is
ground-shakingly bad. It’s usually something to do with the
foundations not being done properly, which can lead in
turn to problems with the conservatory’s frame and base.”
Martyn has designed and managed the installation of
many double glazing, orangery and conservatory projects
across the West Midlands, Shropshire and Worcestershire.
“With our experience we can offer the best solutions to
your home improvement needs,” he says. “If you have the
dream, Bridgnorth Windows has the means to realise it.
And we have a wide range that can suit any budget.”
This expansive choice includes ranges that are
manufactured to exceed British Security Standards and
meet the Official Police Security Initiative, meaning
wherever you are, your family and possessions will be safe.
Martyn pledges, “Bridgnorth Windows will transform your
property into a more comfortable, desirable and safe
place to be.
“There is also peace of mind for your investment
too with our 10-year guarantee with Glass & Glazing
Federation Insurance (GGFi).”
With continental contacts, Bridgnorth is
showcasing the value of foreign friends.
Neil Thomas reports.
LOVE LOCAL
Entering Bridgnorth you are greeted by place name signs
confirming that you are, indeed, in one of Shropshire’s
loveliest towns. But the signs have a deeper resonance –
easily overlooked on casual glance – celebrating a special
bond. They tell you that Bridgnorth is twinned with Thiers
and Schrobenhausen.
Like towns across Britain, Bridgnorth has embraced the
town twinning movement, which developed in the late
1940s from the ashes of the Second World War. It grew
with the passionate support of mayors and citizens here
and on the continent, who vowed that Europe should
never again be torn apart by armed conflict.
The movement gathered pace in the decades that
followed, with Bridgnorth joining the twinning ‘party’
in 1978 when its association with Thiers, in central
France, was formed.
Schrobenhausen, in Bavaria, southern Germany, was
added in 1992 and, since it also has links with Thiers,
the three towns essentially became ‘triplets’.
The triple alliance has been strong over the years but
in recent times has had to overcome the challenges of
Covid 19 and Brexit, both of which in their different ways
have made travel between Britain and the continent
more problematic.
There is still a will, though, to maintain these ties,
evidenced by the most recent ‘family’ gathering, hosted
in Bridgnorth in June.
Visitors from Schrobenhausen and Thiers enjoyed a
bumper weekend in which they took in celebrations for
the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and the town carnival.
Delegates visited the Severn Valley Railway, one of
Shropshire’s biggest tourist attractions with 250,000
visitors a year. They attended a formal civic dinner hosted
by Mayor of Bridgnorth Karen Sawbridge on the Friday
evening as well as a more informal afternoon tea in a
marquee at Bridgnorth Rugby Club on
Saturday. The rugby clubhouse hosted
a party on Saturday evening, featuring
live music from a ukulele band of
which Bridgnorth Twinning Association
president Lindy MacDonald is
a member.
“Everyone was dancing and it was
a great night. Our visitors certainly
enjoyed themselves,” says Twinning
Association chairman and former
Bridgnorth mayor Ron Whittle.
It all drew to a close on Sunday
with a church service. A bench
with mural was unveiled, a gift
from Schrobenhausen to mark 30 years
of twinning between the two towns.
“It was a fantastic experience and a very
positive reaffirmation of the friendship between
our towns,” Ron says.
“We managed to cover the cost and the visitors had
a fantastic time, helped no doubt by the weather and
celebrations that were taking place in the town. There was
plenty of dancing and eating at the functions and plenty
of compliments for the town.”
The chairman particularly praised Councillor Sawbridge
for her role in helping the event come together.
However, for all the positivity around the weekend,
it’s fair to say that Bridgnorth’s involvement in the town
twinning programme is at a crossroads.
“We are due to visit Schrobenhausen next year and Thiers
in 2024 but there are some issues to be considered in the
meantime,” Ron explains.
“The future funding model for when Bridgnorth is next
due to be host in 2025 is as yet unclear,” he explains.
“There has to be the continued will on the part of
the town council to keep twinning alive. Afterall, it is
important to remember that as an association we are not
acting for ourselves but on behalf of the town council,
which signed the original town twinning charter.
“In addition, I think it is important to get more people
in Bridgnorth involved, not just on the organisational
side of things but more widely. There is an opportunity
for schools and local parish councils to be part of it
all. It would be good if sports clubs could get involved
in fixtures against one another. I know the rugby club
have played matches in Thiers in the past and it would
be good if we could have more clubs doing that kind of
thing. There could be more cultural exchanges – music
group tours, artistic link-ups and so on. Schrobenhausen
has a very active music school and so local musical clubs
could also be involved. It would be great to have younger
people involved to encourage us that twinning has
a future.
“It should be about more than relatively small delegations
making formal visits once a year.”
The Cliff Railway, one of Bridgnorth's many attractions
The twinning association has also launched a drive
to recruit new faces to try to reverse a dwindling
membership.
“On that first visit to Thiers more than 40 years ago,
we took 300 people in six coaches. Last year, our
membership was down to 35, which is the lowest it’s
ever been. Covid has been a factor, of course, but it
was happening before that. I think it reflects a general
reluctance by younger people particularly to get involved
in formal organisations. Many different groups have seen
their memberships decline in recent years.”
However, under Ron’s chairmanship, the association
has made a promising start in reversing the trend with
membership rising to 65 in the past year.
“Even that number, though, is not enough to sustain it.
We need 200 to 300.
There were many positive
comments from the continental visitors about Bridgnorth
“We shall be working hard to
promote the many benefits of
twinning to revitalise interest.
“
“Our small committee, though, is determined that the
association will not fail and, with the help of Bridgnorth
Town Council, we shall be working hard to promote the
many benefits of twinning to revitalise interest.”
Ron believes that there is no reason why the twinning
movement in Britain should be derailed by the UK’s
withdrawal from the EU.
“Whatever your feelings about the Brexit vote, I think it’s
important to maintain a connection with our European
neighbours, and Bridgnorth’s connections to Thiers and
Schrobenhausen are very strong.
“I suspect that there are lots of our residents that would
welcome the chance to be part of an opportunity to
enjoy fellowship with our near neighbours, either through
twinning festivals in those towns, hosting visitors when
we hold our twinning festival each third year or by
contact through social media, individual visits and so on.
“Not only is twinning culturally enriching but in an
increasingly uncertain world, it is important to let your
friends know how much you value them.”
Helping to
save lives
Bridgnorth Lions Club’s annual
prostate cancer screening
event provides men with
a great opportunity to get
tested for what is a potentially
treatable disease.
The date is Thursday, 22 September; the venue The Castle
Hall, Bridgnorth with the club issuing an impassioned plea
to all men aged 40 and over to come and get tested.
The club launched its annual public PSA (prostate-specific
antigen) Test Event in 2009. Since then, it has carried
out over 10,000 tests – with approximately 500 men
diagnosed with prostate cancer.
This could literally be a life-or-death event for some.
Prostate cancer kills 13,000 men in the UK every year
– but if caught early, the disease is potentially curable.
However, its symptoms can often be difficult to recognise.
“Almost without exception every man who has
subsequently been diagnosed with prostate cancer
following one of our PSA test evenings had no idea that
they had the disease” says Lions’ spokesman Martin Allen.
Last year saw the re-introduction of the screening evening
after the COVID interruptions of the previous two years.
It is significant to note that the COVID disruption had a
disastrous effect on diagnosis rates with deaths increasing
over 50% during this period.
“Prostate cancer kills 13,000
men in the UK every year
– but if caught early, the
disease is potentially curable.
“
This year`s screening evening will follow the same
process introduced last year, with attendance strictly
by appointment only. Pre booking last year enabled the
event to be far more effectively and efficiently organised
and resulted in virtually no queuing and many men being
in and out in 10 minutes.
One important addition this year is the option of taking
additional cholesterol and diabetes tests at the same
time as your PSA test. This is simply carried out at
the same time with a maximum of 2 blood vials taken
during one blood sample. The additional 2 tests are
completely optional and you can select either or both
when you register. The subsidised PSA test costs £15 with
the additional 2 tests for Diabetes and cholesterol also
costing £15 each.
Bridgnorth Lions are extremely grateful for generous
donations from Nock Deighton Agricultural, Bridgnorth
Livestock market following their highly successful
charity auction, and Hydrobolt, Wolverhampton
which enable the costs to be kept at a minimum.
“This year`s screening evening
introduced last year, with
attendance strictly by
appointment only.
“Like last year, we will be operating an online booking
system for appointments and will be providing walk in
booking facilities at the Old Castle Pub (Tuesday 30th
August 6pm -9pm) and the Library in Bridgnorth (Thursday
8th September 9am – 4pm) for anyone without internet
access. We will be on hand to help you through the simple
registration process and print off your QR code which you
will need on the evening,” Martin adds.
This system will ensure that:
✔ Appointments can be made immediately
and easily via the website:
www.bnlc.mypsatests.org.uk
✔ Once registered on the system, results
from all previous tests will be accessible,
showing testing history.
✔ With the QR Code Blood Form, the test is
processed within four hours of the blood
sample reaching the laboratory and
the results will be sent to the clinicians
automatically. Once the clinicians have
assessed the results, an email will be
sent to the man, stating that his result
can be accessed in his account. There is
absolutely no delay in generating
the result.
✔ Any ‘red’ results for men under the age
of 80 can be referred to the RAPID Trial
at Imperial College and be seen within
2 weeks of their GP’s referral. At the end
of a day’s testing, the man will know
whether he has prostate cancer, or
another condition, and will be given a
treatment guideline.
Martin continued: “The age recommended for men
to be tested is now 40 in line with guidance from
mypsatests.org.uk as incidences of prostate cancer are
increasing in the over 40s. We strongly recommend every
man over the age of 40 books an appointment to come
along on 22 September.”
“We strongly recommend every
man over the age of 40 books an
appointment to come along on
22 September.
“
The prostate cancer screening initiative is one of several
public-spirited activities undertaken by Bridgnorth Lions
Club, which was formed in 1976 by four like-minded men to
help those in the community who are disadvantaged or in
need of help. In the intervening 46 years, the club has raised
hundreds of thousands of pounds for local good causes
and its membership has grown to 25. All proceeds from the
evening will go to Bridgnorth Lions Charity Account.
Aside from the prostate screening evening, the club also
organises other major events in the town such as the
famous Bridgnorth Walk and the Duck Race.
“Because we are local, we serve the unique needs of the
community in which we live,” Martin says. “But as we are
also global, we can address international challenges such
as help for earthquake victims or other natural disasters
wherever they occur.”
Having fun while helping their local community is what it’s
all about for Lions. The club has an active social calendar,
enjoyed by all members and partners and anyone
interested in joining should have a chat with any of the
Lions on the evening or beforehand.
The organisation was founded in Chicago, USA, in 1917 by
insurance agent Melvin Jones, and became international
when the first club in Canada was formed in 1920. The UK’s
first club was opened in London in 1949. There are now
more than 12,000 Lions in 900 clubs in this country.
Melvin Jones’ personal code for life, “You can’t get very far
until you start doing something for somebody else”, became
a guiding principle for public-spirited people the world over.
Bridgnorth is part of Lions Clubs International (LCI) – with
1.4million members across the globe. Its motto is ‘We Serve’.
Never was that more poignantly illustrated by the simple
blood test on an autumn evening that could help to save a
stranger’s life . . .
Legal Life
A matter
of Trust.
Sophie Price, Director at Fodens Solicitors
A new requirement to register certain Trusts comes into force this
September. Here’s what you need to know.
Trusts are a way of legally managing
assets on behalf of others, and from
1st September 2022 trusts must
be registered with the UK Trust
Registration Service (TRS). To help
you meet this deadline, here’s all
you need to know about the TRS
and registering.
What is the Trust
Registration Service?
The TRS is a register of existing trusts,
established in 2017 as part of an EU
directive to tackle money laundering
and terrorist financing. The UK agreed
to continue the TRS as part of the
Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, and in
2020, extended the requirements to
include most non-tax paying trusts.
So, if you created a UK trust on or
after 6th October 2020, even if it has
since been closed, then you will need
to register before 1st September 2022.
Exceptions, Penalties
& Risks
Some types of express trusts have
a reduced risk of money laundering
and terrorist financing thanks to other
regulatory requirements, which means
they don’t need to be registered.
Among several others, these currently
include certain trusts created on
death, registered pension schemes
and bank accounts for minors.
If you do need to register, then
penalties will be issued to anyone
who fails to do so before the
deadline. You’ll also need to update
details within 90 days of changes
taking place, including details of
trustees, beneficiaries or settlors and
the trust’s tax status.
Although some people may
be hesitant to register delicate
information, the TRS is highly secure.
It can only be accessed by those with
legitimate reasons and authority, such
as money laundering and terrorist
financing investigations. If there’s
a high risk of the beneficiary being
exposed to fraud or blackmail, then
HMRC will also refuse access.
Who is responsible for
registering the trust?
Registering a trust and keeping the
details updated is the responsibility
of the lead trustee who manages the
assets on behalf of the beneficiary.
Alternatively, you can also choose to
appoint a solicitor to register the trust
on your behalf.
Sophie Price of Fodens Solicitors
explains, “Whether you’re registering
your trust for the first time or need
to register changes in circumstances,
the key to avoiding penalties is to
act quickly. However, you might not
actually need to register your trust.
There are several types which are
exempt, and others which are exempt
under certain conditions.
“The rules and requirements
surrounding the TRS can get
complicated, so if you have any hint
of doubt, then please seek advice.
It’s always best to check and complete
your registration with peace of mind
than risk being hit with a penalty.”
If you would like to find out more
about the Trust Registration Service,
then reach out to Sophie and the
rest of the Fodens team. They will
be happy to answer any of your
questions and help you meet the
September deadline, guiding you
through each step of the registration
process and beyond.
ANIMAL CARE
A wee problem
Cats are naturally clean, fastidious creatures and should
make use of indoor litter trays or loose earth in the
garden. Urinating in the house is therefore not just
unpleasant for owners to deal with but can be a sign that
something is wrong and needs further investigation.
Is your cat spraying or urinating
Cats spray urine to mark territory and as a form of scent
communication with other cats. When spraying, the cat
will usually be standing, the back feet may make a treading
motion, and the tail will be upright and quivering; urine is
sprayed onto a vertical surface.
It is a normal behaviour, particularly for non-neutered cats.
Neutering greatly reduces incidences of spraying in both
sexes. However, excessive spraying or spraying indoors can
indicate that your cat is feeling insecure and stressed.
During a normal urination the cat will not be standing but
squatting, over a horizontal surface. They may scratch at
the area around the urine as if to cover it. Common sites for
inappropriate urination are beds, carpet, baths and sinks.
Why is my cat doing this indoors?
Any cat starting to urinate in the house should be taken
to the vet for a check-up. Illness is a common reason;
this can include urinary tract infections and stress-related
cystitis, diabetes, thyroid disease or kidney disease.
Let your vet know about any changes in your cat’s
weight and drinking and eating habits.
Inability to pass urine at all – squatting and straining
unproductively – is an emergency and you must contact
your vet straight away.
It’s important to have enough litter trays, with a general
rule of one per cat plus a spare, ideally all in separate
places. Trays are best in quiet corners, well away from
food and water bowls and beds. Many cats prefer a fine,
sandy litter without a strong scent. Some prefer a covered
tray but others do not, so it’s best to have options.
Other common behavioural and stress triggers include:
• Social stress – conflict with other cats in the
household, a large population of cats outside the
home, or invasion of the home by strange cats
• New additions to the family – cat, baby or dog
• Owner absence – holiday, change of work, change
of shift pattern
• Disruption of routine – building work, going into
a cattery, people visiting
Faith and happiness
High quality teaching with children’s wellbeing is at the
heart of every decision. That’s the ethos of St John’s
Roman Catholic Primary School in Bridgnorth.
“We have an excellent team of staff who are totally
committed to providing an environment where learning
is enjoyable and where children feel safe and happy,
with our faith central to what we do and who we are,”
says Head Teacher Jessica Buzzing. “With Jesus we can
achieve what we dream and believe.
“We believe that every child is a unique individual and
we encourage them to explore and develop their learning
skills, grow with confidence and enthusiasm, learn how
to accept responsibility and, very importantly, strive to
reach their full potential.
“Always at the top of our agenda is the high quality of
teaching and learning for the children. Their wellbeing
is at the heart of every decision we make. We nurture
the talents of all our pupils, whether religious, sporting,
musical, artistic or in drama. Pupil voice is very important
to us and we have an active School Council, Faith Council
and Sports Council,” Mrs Buzzing says.
The school, for pupils
aged 4 to 11, offers
wrap-around care
from 7.30am to
5.30pm Monday to
Friday. In addition,
there is a range
of after-school
clubs throughout
the year.
St John’s believes
in strong parent and community links.
“Parents are vital partners in their child’s education,
safety and wellbeing. Here at St John’s, we have an
enthusiastic and effective PTA which always warmly
welcomes new members to organise exciting events to
raise funds to support a range of educational experiences
or new resources.”
St John’s was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted and ‘Outstanding’
by its Denominational inspection. Please contact the
office to arrange a visit.
d Michael Penn
SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS
New man
at the helm
A new headteacher has taken over the reins at Bridgnorth
Endowed, bringing with him a wealth of experience and
expertise as the school continues to go from strength
to strength.
Michael Penn made the move after 10 years in senior
roles at Birmingham Ormiston Academy, and is delighted
to lead the school with his clear vision for the next
exciting chapter.
Mr Penn explains, “I am proud to be the Headteacher of
this wonderful school and feel privileged to work with
such a dedicated team of teachers and support staff.
The students are remarkable and visitors often comment
on their outstanding manners and behaviour.
“My aim is to ensure that each and every one of them
achieves their personal best by providing an education
that challenges them intellectually and offers them a wide
range of opportunities to help them thrive during their
time here.”
An extraordinary array of clubs and activities are on offer
at BES, and the focus is firmly on developing well-rounded
young people who are able to discover their unique
talents in an environment that allows them to grow.
Set in 30 acres of beautiful grounds with sports pitches,
a historic Old Hall and first-class educational facilities,
the school enjoys its own on-site leisure centre, and a
fantastic location in the heart of Bridgnorth.
Previously the town’s grammar, Bridgnorth Endowed has
a long and rich history that dates all the way back to 1503.
Today, it’s a vibrant, forward-thinking co-educational
secondary school for 600 pupils aged between 11 and 16.
Its size is certainly a benefit, as being a smaller school
means there’s a real sense of community, where staff
are able to get to know every student and wellbeing is
prioritised above all else.
Pastoral care is exceptional and students feel secure
and comfortable in an atmosphere that is calm, caring
and built on mutual respect, both inside and outside
the classroom.
Mr Penn concludes, “Here, at Bridgnorth Endowed, we
place great value on our students’ pastoral and academic
development and our aim is to create a genuine and
positive culture that can be felt and that resonates
throughout each day, and in every part of the school.
“We expect and give the very best educational experience
to every child as it is our mission to challenge and support
our young people to achieve their potential.
“We believe that the Academy’s values of trust,
enthusiasm, fairness and hard work ensure that every
student develops into a confident, successful and happy
young adult, ready to face the future.”
Bridgnorth Endowed is inviting prospective pupils and
parents to explore all it has to offer at a Year 7 Open
Evening on Wednesday 5 October. School tours are also
available in September and October. To book a place,
SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS
Intentionally small,
internationally
minded
In the year that Shrewsbury High School (SHS) returns to
its roots as an all-through all-girls school, Headteacher
Jo Sharrock was asked to share her expertise on
all-through, all-girl education at the International
Coalition of Girls’ Schools Global Forum in Boston, USA.
She was accompanied by SHS teachers Jo Orgill and
Carla Tonks, both research fellows contributing to the
Global Action Research Collaboration on Girls’ Education
– a pioneering programme that engages girls’ school
educators from across the world in collaborative research.
Jo is delighted that Shrewsbury High School is at the
forefront of girls’ education in the UK and playing an
active role in discussions and research across the globe.
Our founding mothers at SHS said
in the 19th century that if girls are
given the right start in life and the
right education then all of society
can be bettered.
“For us, being single sex is not about an organisational
device, it is because we believe it is the best possible
model to build happy, confident girls prepared for the
opportunities and challenges of the 21st century,” she
explains. “I was incredibly proud to share our experiences
and achievements with a global audience and to begin
building international networks from which our students
and staff can benefit.
“We remain a small school in a small town with mighty
ambition. It was marvellous to see two of our brilliant
staff, two of only 20 teachers selected from the UK
to take part in the global action research collective,
represent the school and present their projects. We say
with pride that we offer the girls of SHS a world beyond
Town Walls and this is one way in which we fulfil that part
of our mission.”
As part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, SHS has always
believed in a research-driven approach.
Jo Sharrock
“We know that single-sex education works but we have
to challenge our assumptions and ask why? Our founding
mothers at SHS said in the 19th century that if girls are
given the right start in life and the right education then
all of society can be bettered. We still hold true to that
pioneering belief but we have to make sure it is still
relevant in a rapidly changing society.
For us, being single sex is not about an
organisational device, it is because we
believe it is the best possible model to
build happy, confident girls.
“Our spirit, energy and values are best demonstrated by
the past academic year which has been transformational.
We have boldly reaffirmed our commitment to our
founding values by reuniting our junior school pupils
with the senior girls on our historic Town Walls site in
the heart of Shrewsbury. Coming together has enriched
the experience for all and we have unlocked the power
of a community of big and little sisters, from Reception
all the way to Sixth Form, who provide mutual support
for each other. At the most formative time in a girl’s life,
experience of our environment will equip her with what
she needs to thrive for the rest of her life.”
SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS
Christian values
at heart
St Leonard’s CE is a large primary school, home to nearly
300 pupils. The school is set in its own expansive grounds,
close to the edge of Bridgnorth town centre but firmly at
the heart of its community.
Headteacher Kay Ferriday leads a team of well-qualified
teachers who are backed up by an excellent team of
support staff.
The school encourages everyone to ‘enjoy success’ by
embedding Christian values in hearts and minds, within a
nurturing, safe and inclusive environment. This enlightened
ethos equips all children to become global citizens.
The latest OFSTED inspection, earlier this year, recognised
that ‘Leaders leave no learners behind’ and that ‘Pupils
work hard and achieve well at this happy school. They are
safe and well cared for. They develop positive attitudes to
learning and behave well’.
The inspectors’ report also said that ‘Leaders have high
expectations of pupils and want the best for them.
Their high ambitions are realised through pupils’ good
behaviour and successful achievement’.
As a Church school, the spiritual, moral, social, cultural,
mental and physical development of all pupils are
promoted well. At the same time, pupils are prepared
for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences
of adult life by placing an equal value on each person
involved in the life of the school whether they are a pupil
or member of staff.
“Our vision and Christian values underpin everything we
do as a school: our aims and ethos, policies, procedures,
the design of our curriculum, how we treat one another,
the decisions that we make and the school’s management
and governance,” Mrs Ferriday says.
The school aims to serve its community by providing
an education of the highest quality within the context
of Christian belief and practice. It encourages an
understanding of the meaning and significance of faith
and promotes Christian values through the experience it
offers its pupils
At St Leonard’s, the well sequenced and cohesive
curriculum is complemented by many enrichment
activities such as sports’ clubs, choir and the learning
of a musical instrument, amongst others.
As a Church school, the spiritual,
moral, social, cultural, mental and
physical development of all pupils
are promoted well.
Parents are encouraged to go into school to join in with
whole school worship and the termly Eucharist, as well as
social events such as craft afternoons with pupils, family
picnics, summer fayres and bonfire nights.
There is an excellent provision for children from as young
as Nursery age, for up to 30 pupils. Nursery pupils follow
the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework, whilst
also having the opportunity to explore the outdoors
in dedicated learning areas along with an excellent
Forest School provision.
St Leonard’s also offers an established wraparound care
facility on site; Little Lenny’s, where children are well
looked after both before and after school, providing
peace of mind for working parents.
Visit www.stleonardsprimary.co.uk for more information.
National awards
for Wrekin
Wrekin College is celebrating a string of prestigious
national awards in both music and sport.
The Wellington school has also announced further plans
to update facilities with work due to start on a new
Design and Technology school in 2023.
This year has proved a particularly successful one for
Wrekin which has been shortlisted in the Independent
Schools of the Year Awards in both the Sports and
Performance Arts (Music and Drama) categories.
The news comes after the school’s Jazz Band and
Concert Band were awarded the top platinum prize at
the NCBF (National Concert Band Festival) national final
in Manchester in April.
It was a first award for the concert band in their debut
at the event and a hat trick for the Jazz Band which, as
a result, was commended for consistent outstanding
performances.
Sport has also enjoyed one of its best performances in
the 2021/22 academic year, with Wrekin being named
one of the country’s top senior cricketing schools in the
Cricketer Schools Guide 2022 and the netball First team
achieving bronze medals at the Under 19 national finals.
Wrekin College has invested significantly in recent years
to give pupils a wide range of opportunities to explore
and develop their talents.
A new Business School was opened in 2017 followed
by a revamped library and Sixth Form Centre, new
Music School, Dance Studio and second all-weather
playing surface.
A focus on developing employability skills has opened
up new career paths and also seen children thrive as
independent thinkers confident to make even more
ambitious choices for their education and their futures.
Headmaster Tim Firth said he was extremely proud of the
Wrekin College community which had faced some tough
challenges during the pandemic but had emerged even
stronger with a continued determination to strive for
success across the board.
Wrekin College has invested
significantly in recent years to give
pupils a wide range of opportunities
to explore and develop their talents.
To find out more about Wrekin attend Open Day on
Saturday, October 8 at 10am.
October 8 when visitors will get the chance to tour the
school, hear from staff and pupils and meet the new
Headteacher, Anna Karacan. Mrs Karacan has taken over
from Martin Stott who left in July after 15 years at the
helm of the Old Hall School.
Mrs Karacan has moved from Kellet
School in Hong Kong where she
was Deputy Head. She was also
instrumental in setting up Harrow
Prep School in Hong Kong.
She has worked in both the
state and private sector having
studied at Manchester University and Anna Karacan
is now completing an MA at Keele University.
SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS
An inspirational community
A clear vision . . . to deliver an inspiring education to
those within the school community by meeting the
needs of every individual within a safe, caring and
supportive environment.
This is the core ethos of Oldbury Wells School in
Bridgnorth. As a dynamic, forward-looking school located
in this historic town, the school is extremely proud of all
its students’ achievements.
The curriculum develops skills
and attributes such as resilience,
self-esteem, risk management,
teamworking and critical thinking.
As the home of Bridgnorth 6th Form, it is alive with
learning, ensuring everyone continually improves to be the
best they can while developing individual interests and
talents. Students from the age of 11 to 18 make outstanding
progress both academically and within their personal
development and wellbeing, enabling future goals and
aspirations to be fulfilled.
Alongside the school’s highly effective, well-planned
curriculum, Headteacher Lee Tristham says that at the
heart of the school’s success is students’ enjoyment of
their many experiences within lessons and throughout
their co-curricular programme.
“Our students are incredibly supportive of each other,
whether working on events through our highly effective
house system, as part of our 6th form mentoring
programme or within the many clubs and activities across
their school; our students working collaboratively is
empowering for all to see.”
The school has excellent working relationships
with the many Primary Partner schools from which
children join. As part of the TrustEd CSAT Alliance
(http://www.trusted-schools.com), which includes a mix
of primary and secondary schools, students and staff work
collaboratively across both phases and directly through
to post-16 provision and
beyond. This helps support
students of all ages with
leadership experiences in
which they can develop
key skills to support their
future ambitions. This,
alongside the work of the
school’s vibrant student council, ensures
that all children have a voice, working closely with key
staff to further shape opportunities across the school.
The school recognises the importance of bringing learning
alive outside the classroom. The picturesque setting brings
a fantastic resource enabling students to develop an
understanding of local history; whether through a visit to
Bridgnorth Castle or to the Severn Valley Railway, students
and staff are keen to explore opportunities locally as well
as further afield.
The school also recognises the importance of young
people’s personal development which helps them grow
the knowledge, skill and attributes they need to keep
themselves healthy and safe, preparing them for life and
the world of work. The curriculum develops skills and
attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk management,
teamworking and critical thinking to promote health and
wellbeing, positive relationships and an understanding of
what is important to be successful in the wider world.
“We are relentless in celebrating everyone’s achievements
in all aspects of their academic and personal development.
We value our traditions and encourage our students to
have the highest expectations of themselves and others.
“Students achieve excellent examination results at all levels
which are recognised locally, regionally and nationally as
being exceptionally strong.
Our blended approach of academic rigour and enrichment
opportunities ensures our school is ‘a lovely place to be
and a great place to study and work’ (OFSTED). We look
forward to welcoming families to our open events to find
out more.”
SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS
Future firmly in focus
At Wolverhampton Grammar School (WGS), record pupil
numbers have heralded a vibrant and busy start to the
new academic year.
Following the expansion of its Junior School, further
opportunities have been created to join Wolverhampton
Grammar School earlier. Once a state grammar school for
boys, this 510-year-old establishment now offers the very
best 4-18 through-school independent education for boys
and girls in the City of Wolverhampton and its environs.
A much-celebrated aspect of the school is its ability to
be future-focused and equip students for life. This is
highlighted in Wolverhampton Grammar School’s
approach to embracing the use of digital technology
in the classroom. Outsiders looking in might think that
an iPad for every student is merely a gimmick, whereas
in fact it can add a fourth dimension to teaching and
learning. The raison d’être behind the introduction of its
iPad scheme is constantly borne out by students’ greater
engagement with their subject matter – be that a study
of geometric shapes or a recount of a moment in history.
relationships is paramount. It is this blended learning that
is so compelling and empowers students to interrogate
and investigate a mix of tailored resources, fuelling
individuality of learning.
Whilst retaining the best elements of a
time-honoured approach to education,
we never stop anticipating the future.
Head Alex Frazer remarks, “Wolverhampton Grammar
School has a long and proud history but one of our
greatest traditions is that of looking forward and not
standing still. Whilst retaining the best elements of a
time-honoured approach to education, we never stop
anticipating the future. We want to equip our students
with the skills to navigate the careers of tomorrow,
many of which are yet to be written.”
A much-celebrated aspect of the school
is its ability to be future-focused and
equip students for life.
The journey began back in 2017 and shortly afterwards,
Wolverhampton Grammar School was shortlisted for the
Times Education Supplement Independent Schools Award
for the Best use of Technology. Five years on, the use of
technology is seamlessly integrated into a teaching style
which continues to emphasise outstanding teacher and
student relationships.
Right from the beginning of their WGS journey the
youngest children in Reception have access to iPads.
From Year 3 upwards this moves to personal ownership
but handwriting remains an important skill to be
taught, just as much as a teaching style where human
At Wolverhampton Grammar School, students and
staff have wholeheartedly embraced the use of digital
technology. Prospective families are invited to visit on
Saturday 8th October to find out more.
Having a great smile is a huge confidence
boost and to achieve it we need to take care
of our teeth and gums. Good oral health is
really important for our overall wellbeing
too. In fact, poor oral hygiene not only leads
to tooth decay and gum disease but can
contribute to serious conditions such as
cardiovascular disease. Twickel Dental Practice,
in Much Wenlock, is a well-established
practice that is committed to ensuring that
every patient who comes through the door
receives the best advice and treatment. For
new and existing clients Twickel offers a range
of comprehensive dental plans which can be
uniquely tailored to their specific needs. The
team at Twickel prides itself on offering quality
care and values all patients as individuals. By taking out
one of its dental plans you can be certain your oral health
is in safe hands.
Regular dental check-ups
Dental care tailored to you
Look after your oral health with a personalised plan from Twickel Dental Practice
As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Regular
visits to the dentist can mean any problems are picked up
early. Ignoring any issues can make them more difficult and
costly to treat in the future. With a Twickel dental plan you
will have regular examinations of your teeth and gums and
the dentist will also check for signs of oral cancer and take
X-rays where clinically necessary. Good oral health doesn’t
just start and end with a visit to the dentist, though.
The team at Twickel prides itself on
offering quality care and values all
patients as individuals.
Knowing how to maintain teeth and gums at home is key
to optimising oral hygiene and therefore general wellbeing.
The team at Twickel can advise on all aspects of cleaning
your teeth and suggest changes to your diet and lifestyle
that could make significant improvements. The plan offers
frequent full reviews of a patient’s dental needs identifying
where early planned intervention can prevent future
invasive procedures.
Regular hygienist visits
While the dentist looks after the overall health of your
teeth, the hygienist will professionally clean them,
removing any stubborn tartar and plaque which can lead
to gum disease. When you leave the practice, your mouth
will feel super fresh! A healthy mouth will contribute
to a healthy body because by reducing the build-up of
oral bacteria, you reduce the risk of infection. With a
Twickel dental plan you will receive regular personalised
periodontal care and advice bespoke to your needs. The
hygienist will also offer tips on the best techniques for
brushing and flossing to reduce tooth decay and gum
disease to maintain those pearly whites.
Exclusive benefits
As well as priority bookings, taking out a dental plan with
Twickel entitles you to a 10 per cent discount on a range of
treatments. For peace of mind, it’s reassuring to know that
wherever you are in the world, the plan offers emergency
cover against accidents, subject to conditions. You will also
be able to access emergency treatment at another practice
or outside of Twickel’s normal opening hours.
Advertisement Feature
Flexible and affordable
What’s really great is that Twickel provides a range of plans that suit different needs and budgets.
A dental plan starts from £18.99 and you can spread the cost of plans through convenient
monthly direct debit payments.
Full details of all packages are on the website www.twickel-dental.co.uk/fees
Oliver the Musical
Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury
Curtain Call Theatre Company returns
to the Theatre Severn stage with Lionel
Bart's classic musical based on Charles
Dickens' novel, Oliver Twist. The Tony
and Olivier Award-winning show is one
of the few musicals to win an Academy
Award for Best Picture and is widely
hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece
by actors and audience members alike.
The streets of Victorian England come
to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan
in a workhouse, becomes the neglected
apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver
escapes to London and finds acceptance
amongst a group of petty thieves
and pickpockets led by the elderly
Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a
theft he did not commit, the benevolent
victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him
in. Fearing the safety of his hideout,
Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and
the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him
back, threatening Oliver's chances of
discovering the true love of a family.
The Color Purple
Birmingham Hippodrome
Based on the Pulitzer prize-winning novel
by Alice Walker and adapted for the
stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony awardwinner
Marsha Norman, The Color
Purple tells the story of courageous
heroine Celie, as she journeys through
joy, despair, anguish and hope in her
own personal awakening to discover her
unique voice in the world. The critically
acclaimed Birmingham Hippodrome and
Made at Curve production is a moving
and soul-raising family chronicle set in
racially divided southern America in the
1900s. As the years go by, abused and
oppressed Celie becomes resigned to
her unfortunate lot in life, but when her
friendship with fiercely independent
Sofia and love affair with glamourous
singer Shug start to shake things up,
she begins to question her world and
understand that there must be more to
life. With an evocative score by Grammy
award-winners Brenda Russell, Allee
Let’s create a beautiful lawn together
Autumn is a very important season for your grass.
Lush green lawns in spring don’t just appear overnight,
the preparation starts now. Your lawn is made up of living,
breathing plants, therefore requires care and attention
throughout every season, especially through the harsher
conditions of autumn and winter. Following summer,
our lawns will now face compaction, thatch, and
moss; thankfully, there are solutions to these common
problems. As pioneers in the Lawn Care industry, we at
GreenThumb carry out millions of lawn treatments
every year, with over 35 years’ experience in unrivalled
Lawn Care.
When it comes to compaction, the most effective way
to relieve this common problem is to have Aeration which
creates channels within the soil, enabling vital nutrients,
light, and air to reach the root zone. Uncompacted soil
encourages root growth and therefore a healthier lawn
overall. In order to reduce thatch, fondly known as the
perfect environment for moss to thrive, it’s essential to
have your lawn scarified. Scarification not only removes
surface thatch and reduces moss, but also allows the
roots access to what they require to thrive.
In the later months of the year, it’s also important
to make sure your grass plant has enough light.
Therefore, we advise to cut back shrubs, bushes,
and overhanging branches.
It’s also imperative to rake fallen leaves from the lawn
as soon as you can as this helps to reduce disease caused
by trapped moisture. A lot of people stop mowing their
lawn around autumn time, however, grass will still grow
at 5°c and above, so it will still need to be cut, although
no lower than 1 inch (50mm).
As the cold, shorter days are endured, and spring is
eagerly anticipated, it may be comfort enough to gaze
upon your lawn as a shining centrepiece within your
charming garden.
Changing people’s lives
Many people dream of one day being their own boss,
running a successful business. And if that business
improves people’s lives, so much the better.
Julian Turnock has made it happen with his
Bridgnorth-based company Apple Stairlifts.
“This is the career I love. I’m not just installing stairlifts,
but changing people’s lives and helping them to overcome
daily challenges,” he explains.
“People do give me a strange look when I say it, but when
I’m asked what I do for a living, I always say: ‘I change
people’s lives.’ I believe that’s what all of us in the mobility
and disability industry do.
“It doesn’t matter whether you sell mobility scooters,
stairlifts or walking aids, you are not just going to work,
you are changing somebody’s life for the better.
“You can’t put a price on that and we should all be proud
of what we do.”
Through his 26 years of working in the lift industry, it
had always been an ambition of Julian’s to set up and
run his own company, but the turning point came when
his employer, Handicare Stairlifts UK, reorganised in the
autumn of 2020.
“After working there for 18 years and reaching the
position of National Service Manager, the decision was
taken to have a reshuffle of the senior managers in the
field service department and I decided to leave the
business then.
Elegance Cocoa Brown Rembrandt
“I had to make a decision. Do I work for someone else or
fulfil my ambition and start up my own stairlift company?”
For a few months, the multi-skilled engineer worked at
his dad’s business, helping to install disability lifts onto
coaches, but by April last year he was ready to launch his
own business.
Apple Stairlifts sells new and reconditioned lifts as
well as offering a breakdown and planned maintenance
service. Julian’s many years of field service management
experience have been a huge asset in his business.
He initially hired in specialists to design his brand and help
with promotion. As time has gone on, he has developed
his skills around accountancy packages and marketing.
60

“The aim of our business is to really bring a stairlift
solution to every person that is in need of our services
at a price they can afford,” he explains.
There have been no problems with local competition,
says Julian, as Apple Stairlifts offers sub contract
installation and engineering services to other
companies within the industry.
Advertisement Feature
I had to make a decision. Do I work for
someone else or fulfil my ambition and
start up my own stairlift company?
“I would rather work with people and companies than
have challenges with them,” adds Julian, who says that he
is prefers to stay focused on what he’s doing and doing it
well, while giving outstanding customer service.
“I genuinely want to support the communities around
me that support my business. Yes, I need to earn a living
but I will not compromise on our values. I am focused
on building a good reputation as I believe that the best
marketing of all is word of mouth.”
The key to surviving as a new business is having the
flexibility to adapt, he adds.
One of the advantages Apple has, Julian explains, is being
able to choose from a broad range of lifts of different
brands rather working with the small portfolio of a
large manufacturer.
Another service that Apple offer is in-house building
alterations which makes them a one stop shop for
stairlifts. It is sometimes necessary for minor building
work to be carried out to enable a stairlift to be installed
and the benefit of not having to use a third party
contractor is worth its wait in gold.”
Julian has some exciting ideas as he looks to grow his
business over the next few years.
“People who know me know I like to think outside the
box. My aim has been to support more of the rural
communities. Also, I have spoken to some charities about
working with them to offer stairlift rentals for people who
are terminally ill.”
Looking forward Julian says that there is scope for the
company to expand beyond the stairlift sector.
Julian has some exciting ideas as he
looks to grow his business over the
next few years.
“We have been super busy. We hit the ground running and
we see real potential to grow the business.
“What has been key for us over the past 18 months has
been not only to grow the business but also put the
correct structure in place. That gives us a solid foundation
to be able to sustain that growth as well as the ability
to expand into other areas of the mobility sector.”
Good Gardening Tips for
September & October
Autumn’s
beauty
Fingers crossed for an
Indian summer to keep
our blooms bathed in
sunshine, says gardening
expert Ann Winwood.
Summer is over but that doesn’t
mean an end to the flowering season.
Which is, obviously, great news for
gardeners as they an continue to tap
into the therapeutic benefits of their
hobby as autumn encroaches.
Fingers crossed we shall have an
Indian summer, with warms spells
to encourage us outdoors. This is
not only great for us but perfect
for perennials. And with such an
extensive range of herbaceous
perennials to choose from including
foxgloves, delphiniums and lupins
alongside the relatively newer
plants of perennial salvia, gaura and
heuchera, our borders can still be a
blaze of colour at this time of year.
This is a busy period for gardeners,
too, with plenty of jobs to be done,
from fruit picking to replanting.
Baskets and tubs
Summer baskets and tubs should
still be looking good throughout
September and possibly into October
if we don’t get any early frosts, but as
the nights draw in and the weather
gets cooler, they will begin to fade.
Continue to deadhead and feed
regularly to encourage a late
show of colour.
Once your baskets have been
emptied, why not replant for winter
colour? There’s plenty to choose
from – pansies, violas, polyanthus,
heathers, ivies and don’t forget to
add a few spring flowering bulbs
for yet more colour. Most garden
centres sell smaller-sized shrubs that
are suitable for tubs and baskets and
which can then be planted out in the
garden next spring. These include
gaultherias, leucothoe, skimmias
and grasses.
Remember to clean up
any debris under rose
bushes as blackspot
will overwinter ready
to infect bushes again
next year.
Once borders have been cleared of
summer bedding, you can replant
with winter pansies, violas, Sweet
Williams and wallflowers.
Know your onions
Harvest onions and potatoes now –
lift up onions and allow to dry out
where they’ve been growing, if the
64

HOME & YOU
weather is fine, before storing.
Potatoes should be stored in a cool
but frost-free environment. Hessian
sacks available from garden centres
are ideal for this. Continue to pick
runner beans and courgettes on
a regular basis so that they don’t
become stringy. Pick any remaining
tomatoes before the first frosts, and
ripen on the windowsill or use for
green chutney.
A common occurrence on tomatoes
seems to be blossom end rot –
a brown leathery patch at the base of
fruits. This is a physiological disorder
rather than a disease or pest and
can be worse during days of high
humidity which limit the amount
of water taken up by the plant roots.
It is also encouraged by calcium
deficiency; while most composts
don’t lack calcium, they do need
regular watering to enable it to be
taken up by the roots and then to
the fruit. If water uptake becomes
limited, calcium uptake can become
limited too.
Make sure plants are watered several
times a day in very hot weather, give
good ventilation and ideally give a
foliar spray of calcium.
Fruits of labour
Pick early apples and pears as they
become ripe. Eat the earlier varieties
straight away, storing later ripening
ones for later use.
Cover autumn-fruiting raspberries
against birds. The old fruiting canes
can be pruned out during the winter
months as the autumn varieties
fruit on the new season’s growth
each year.
Maintenance work
Deadhead roses, trimming back
any very long growths. Remove any
foliage with rust or blackspot, making
sure you dispose of it rather than
putting it on the compost heap.
Remember to clean up any debris
under rose bushes as blackspot will
overwinter ready to infect bushes
again next year.
Clean out greenhouses before
putting in overwintering plants, and
insulate with bubble wrap. Check
heaters ready for the first frosts.
As you bring in plants to overwinter,
watch out for vine weevil larvae,
especially on fuchsias. Products are
available to deal with them.
Encouraging hedgehogs in your
garden is another good control,
and there are also nematodes on
the market, which are best used
in September.
Buy prepared hyacinth bulbs for
Christmas flowering and plant them
in bowls with bulb compost by
mid-September. Give them a drink
and put in a cool, dark place, bringing
gradually into the light and warmth
once the shoots are about 3cm high.
Overwintering onions, shallots and
broad beans will soon be in stock; plant
them as soon as you can and you’ll
get an early maturing crop next year.
Keeping on top of those essential
tasks this season will ensure your
garden continues to flourish and
bring joy for many months to come.
Happy gardening!
WILDLIFE DIARY
A curlew
comeback
Ed visits a ground-breaking
conservation project aimed at
reversing another depressing decline.
Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata)
Curlew Country
Hidden inside a stable building deep in the heart of the
Shropshire Hills is precious new life, born into a changing
world. Six small birds covered in mottled downy feathers
are nibbling on dried food from a shallow dish. A heat
lamp stands over them. Already the birds have long legs,
relative to their body size. Less than a week ago, these
curlews hatched in an incubator from eggs that were
collected from the wild as part of a ground-breaking
conservation project called Curlew Country. The UK
holds 25% of the world's breeding population of curlew.
They over-winter in coastal locations and once nested
all over the UK in meadows, marshes and farmland.
There has been a 65% decline in the UK curlew population
since 1970 with losses most dramatic in lowland Britain.
We pass from the yard through a gate into a nearby field.
There are a series of large wire enclosures protected by
electric fencing. These house older curlew chicks, foraging
in the grass. Once the birds have safely mastered flight,
they will be released back into the wild where they will
be guided by instinct, their destiny determined by chance.
Patience pays
The Shropshire Hills curlew population is nationally
significant at around 40 breeding pairs. The project team
have been studying these birds for seven years and have
amassed many hours of patient field observations. The
findings are stark; in an initial two-three years of nest
monitoring, not one curlew chick successfully fledged
a nest. Without drastic intervention this population of
waders will quietly disappear from the Shropshire Hills.
Several weeks pass by and I find myself back in Curlew
Country. An old byway weaves between hedge banks
and ancient rowan trees, foxgloves and heath bedstraw.
The wet ground is marked by rush pasture, the preferred
nesting habitat for curlew. The birds benefit from the
combination of longer vegetation for cover and short
damp grassland for feeding. The springs that bubble up in
these high fields give birth to rivers. I pass a leafy stream
that chases away to join the young River Onny, less than
a mile from here.
After passing scattered farmsteads, I pause at a junction
in the track. To my right the open hill beckons. From the
flower-rich meadows away to my left, I hear a single
up-turned note that is enough to make me freeze in my
tracks. After what seems like an age, I hear the sound that
I have been listening for – the bubbling song of a curlew.
Few other birds have the ability to encapsulate in sound
the spirit of our wilder margins.
As a ground-nesting species, changes in land management
can cause problems for curlews. A hay meadow would
traditionally be mown in mid-July. By then, chicks from a first
nesting attempt will be almost safely fledged. Earlier and
more frequent hay cuts, as early as May, can destroy nests.
The other problem facing curlew is predation. When a
population of birds is under stress from loss of good habitat,
predators can be the final nail in the coffin.
The team at Curlew Country have tried protecting nests
with electric fencing and even carrying out targeted and
localised predator control. These measures, combined
with farmer reward for loss of crop did result in some
five and a half football pitches) could support a curlew
‘family’. John explains that creating this habitat within
each territory is the longer-term aim of the project.
He tells me of amazing farmers who are doing everything
possible to safeguard their curlews. But farming up here is
a challenge. The rocky hillsides barely fade to rock-strewn
farmland. Agri-environment schemes that support farmers
are needed to achieve sustainable conservation land
management across a landscape.
chicks fledging the nest. Collecting eggs and hatching
them in captivity is known as ‘headstarting’. The aim is to
maintain the population in the short-term but this kind of
work requires a large team of people.
Friendly farmers
a curve. Photo credit: Curlew Country
Curlew Country is headed up by Amanda Perkins.
A passionate advocate for curlew conservation, she has
worked hard to embed within the community the battle
to save the local curlew population from extinction.
Without the support of local farmers, Curlew Country
would be destined for failure. Tony, the field ornithologist,
is tasked with locating the nests and collecting the eggs
under licence from Natural England. It is then over to the
aviculturalists (Amber and Katie and a team of trainees
and volunteers) to care for the eggs and, eventually,
the young birds.
John is the countryside liaison officer for the project.
He has the challenging job of re-generating a landscape
so that incubators and pens will no longer be needed
for curlew survival. Ten acres of good habitat (or around
A sad sense of inevitability haunts the story of the Curlew.
It could easily become the next bird in a long line to be
lost from Shropshire. It wasn’t that long ago that our hay
meadows rattled with the ‘crrrek crrrek’ of the corncrake.
Now you would have to travel to the Scottish Islands to
hear a corncrake. Over five years, Curlew Country has
released a total of 94 chicks back into the wild and these
birds have already been seen as far away as the Irish coast.
But some of these captive-reared birds have also returned
to the Shropshire Hills, a glimmer of hope for a different
ending to this story.
Do one thing for wildlife:
Like most wildlife conservation projects, Curlew Country
relies on shoe-string budgets and short-term grants.
The success of the project is dependent upon the
tremendous goodwill of volunteers and staff going the
extra mile. I was humbled chatting to the team and hearing
about sleepless nights waiting for eggs to hatch. If you
would like to support this important work, please make
