The Seventh Amendment is aprecious right that is increasinglyunder attack by those who wouldeliminate justice by the people infavor of justice by the bureaucracy.The American Board of TrialAdvocates membership consistsof more than 7,600 trial lawyersrepresenting equally the plaintiffand defense bars, as well asjudges, spread among 96 chaptersin all 50 states, the District ofColumbia and Puerto Rico. Sinceits inception in 1958, ABOTA’sprimary mission has been thepreservation of the right to civiljury trial as guaranteed by theSeventh Amendment to the U.S.Constitution.Gender, age and ethnic diversityare essential to the vitality andcontinuing viability of ABOTA. It isABOTA’s policy that membershipbe open to all qualified persons ofdiverse backgrounds.QUALIFICATIONSABOTA is an invitation-only organization.Prospective members must have at least fiveyears of active experience as trial lawyers, havetried at least 10 civil jury trials to conclusionand possess additional litigation experience.Members must also exhibit the virtues of civility,integrity and professionalism.COLLECTIVE VOICEThrough its membership and specializedcommittees, ABOTA responds to seeminglyendless attacks on the civil jury trial system.Members of ABOTA have taken positions on avariety of issues that impact the practice of lawand the right to civil trial by jury.Voir Dire MagazineABOTA publishesVoir Dire magazine,which features indeptharticles oncurrent and historicalissues relating to theSeventh Amendment.This award-winningmagazine has beenVoir DireVolume 27 • Issue 2 • Fall/Winter 2020A PUBLICATION OF THE AMERICAN BOARD OF TRIAL ADVOCATESLessons learnedand a look atthe futurerecognized as one of the top publicationsamong professional and legal associations. Legislative Matters on Capitol HillThrough the American Civil Trial Bar RoundtableLegislative Analysis Fund, ABOTA supportsefforts to preserve and promote the right to acivil jury trial. The Roundtable’s primary focusis the continuation and preservation of the civiltrial justice system. ABOTA does not engage inlobbying activities. With the assistance ofa legislative consultant in Washington, D.C.,ABOTA remains an active force in opposinglegislation contrary to ABOTA’s foundingprinciples. Issues of concern are addressed bythe Roundtable through formal and grassrootsefforts.ABOTA is the sponsor and facilitator of theRoundtable, which consists of civil trial barorganizations dedicated to the continuation andpreservation of the civil jury system.PRESERVATION OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEMJudicial IndependenceABOTA is committed to preserving theindependence of the judiciary, recognizing thatjudicial impartiality and fairness protect againstthe whims and demands of the government andspecial interests.ABOTA developed and published a white paper,Preserving a Fair, Impartial and IndependentJudiciary. ABOTA has established guidelinesto provide responses to misinformation orunwarranted criticism of an individual judge orthe judiciary.
