The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for important projects that will contribute to the conservation of our valuable natural areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund (KLLCF) funding is available for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The Fund supports projects that lead to clean air, safe water, habitat for fish and wildlife, natural areas, and healthy watersheds. Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for money through partnerships with other funders will be given priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nation, or local government. Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. A Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDCK for final funding approval. We Saved Cottonwood Lake! Celebrate a Community Taking Action – October 8, 2022, Cottonwood Lake Regional Park Four years in the making and we have finally done it. We have saved Cottonwood Lake. With your incredible support, we successfully raised just under $650,000 which supported the purchase of 49 hectares of mature forest slated to be logged. Over 1,000 different individual donors, from families to businesses, locals, non-locals, and everyone in between, helped us reach our goal of protecting Cottonwood Lake so it can remain wild. So, you’re all aware, $400,000 went to the land purchase with the remainder going to endowment fees, surveys, and operational costs that all contribute to Cottonwood’s future. Thanks to a passionate group of volunteers and a giving, creative, motivated community behind them, the wilderness above Cottonwood Lake—home to a variety of plants and animals— has been protected. Forever. Over the past year, the work of the Cottonwood Lake Preservation Society (CLPS) has been focused on the transition of lands to be protected in perpetuity. The money the CLPS raised was passed to the RDCK, who became the on-title owners of the property. From there, the CLPS continued to work with the RDCK to transfer the land to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). Supported by the funds raised by CPLS for an endowment, NCC will manage and protect the property’s important ecological features. It’s taken some time, but we’re happy to report that the mature, forest ecosystem above our beloved Cottonwood Lake will be protected from any type of development for generations to come. To celebrate the closing of the Save Cottonwood campaign, and to recognize the many of you who donated your time, your creativity, your energy, and your money to Save Cottonwood, we’re throwing a shaker.
