We paid tribute to Freddie Hubbard, because he was a musical innovator and an extraordinary composer. He said (pardon expletives), "I used to hang with them bad motherfuckers like James Baldwin and Langston Hughes..... I love Harlem. Always did." And, Harlem loved him more. The memorial at Abyssinian that we gave him was packed. Since it was put together in just a few days, the program that's in the booklet is not really accurate, but all of the men and women who shared their love for Freddie showed that love through the music they played. May Mr. Hubbard rest well.

Frederick Dewayne Hubbard was born

April 7, 1938 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He

was the youngest of six children born to

Earmon Hubbard and Delphia White.

A child prodigy of brass, Freddie first

played mellophone, tuba, and French

horn, eventually, choosing trumpet and

flugelhorn as the main instruments of his

musical career. He studied at the Jordan

Conservatory at Butler University with

Max Woodbury, the principal trumpeter of

the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra,

As a teenager, Freddie worked and

recorded with the Montgomery Brothers

(Wes, Monk, and Buddy), and while still in

high school, he founded his jazz band, the

Jazz Contemporaries, with bassist Larry

Ridley and saxophonist James Spaulding.

At the age of 20, Freddie moved to New

York City and quickly established himself

as one of the bright young trumpeters on

the scene, astonishing fans and critics alike

with his unique style, depth, and maturity.

During the late 1950’s, he played with

veteran jazz artists such as Philly Joe

Jones, Sonny Rollins, Slide Hampton, Eric

Dolphy, and Quincy Jones, with whom he

also toured Europe during the early sixties.

At age 22, on the recommendation of Miles

Davis, he recorded Open Sesame, his solo

debut for Blue Note Records. That album,

featuring Tina Brooks and McCoy Tyner,

set the stage for his meteoric rise on the

jazz scene. Within the debut next album, 10 months, Takin Off, and co
