October 2022 THE BEACON Page 9A FROM H ere By Ollie Roehm As I write this in mid- August I am looking forward to a mid-September sojourn to Pickett CCC Memorial State Park in northern Tennessee. We will be staying in a stone cabin by a small lake. And I’m gonna catch a rainbow trout. My buddy has been there and says the area is incredibly beautiful and fairly easy to hike. Sandstone cliffs and arches. Natural bridges. Waterfalls here and there. Yeah, baby. We’re going to drive for about four hours and spend some money to see some beautiful stuff. By Jeff Hermesch Purdue Extension jhermesch@purdue.edu Putting Your Garden to Bed Fall has arrived, an ideal time to “plant the seeds of success” for next year’s garden. By taking advantage of the pleasant fall weather and cleaning up the garden, you can save yourself time and energy next spring. Have you ever made a map of your garden? If not, making one now will help you design next year’s garden with good crop rotation in mind. By keeping maps of the garden, placing annual plants of the same family in the same spot for a few years can be avoided. Crop rotation reduces disease pressure and balances nutrient depletion from the soil. While making a map, include notes of any problems in the garden such as disease or pest pressure. Removing dead plant material is the next step in fall garden cleanup. Some gardeners will bury dead plant material, but removing and discarding it prevents diseases, weeds, and insects that could overwinter (survive) and continue to be a problem for next year. Experienced gardeners often use dead plant material for compost piles, but without proper management, diseases can survive there as well. As noted in last month’s article, a soil test conducted during garden cleanup is a great way to determine if your soil needs amendments. If topsoil, compost, manure, or peat moss need to be added, fall and winter are great times to do so. If you need to add the above amendments or compaction is an issue, consider tilling the garden. Adding a cover crop or mulch is another great practice to prevent garden soil from eroding over the winter months. Planting cover crops that die over the winter such as winter oats are the easiest for beginners and should be considered to improve soil health. If cover crops aren’t your thing, a mulch cover of straw, landscape fabric, or wood mulches should be added. After all the work is done in the garden, the time has come to clean up the garden tools. All tool surfaces should be free of soil, and tools that cut should be sharpened. If not properly cleaned and sterilized, tools can carry pathogens that will spread disease throughout the garden and landscape. Proper tool care will keep your tools in good shape for many years. We could take a nice country drive and find a lot of worthy sites within a twenty-mile radius of where I’m sitting. If big, majestic views are your thing, try this. Take a drive on U.S. 52, out of Harrison toward Brookville. It’s a nice country drive - a good road with the beautiful Whitewater River undulating on your left. You’ll travel about eight miles and come into the quaint little town of New Trenton, home of two world-renowned magicians, Lester “Marvelo” Lake and John Calvert. Maybe I’ll tell you more about them in a future column. Drive about another five miles and you’ll come into Cedar Grove, a beautiful little burg and home of my high school girlfriend. When you get to the middle of town you’re going to see a gas station and a post office on your left. Make a right. You’ll meander through a small neighborhood for just a minute and the street will become a road. You are now on English Hill Road. The road will become steep very quickly. Continue on for maybe a mile and start glancing off to your right. You’ll know it when you see it. It’s a stunner. You can see for miles across a huge expanse of farmland, houses, forests, and the Whitewater. There is nowhere to park but the road is not too heavily traveled. You should have time to soak it all up. If historic, beautiful little country towns are your thing, turn around after viewing the overlook on English Hill and go back to US 52. Continue west on 52 for a mile or so and make a left on U.S. 1. Travel about six miles and you’ll see the town of St Leon off to your left. St. Leon is the home of the St. Leon Pole Raising, an event that has taken place during every presidential election year since 1892. It features a parade, speeches, food, drink, and the ceremonial raising of the historic hickory pole. St. Leon’s is now the only poleraising event in the country. You can find a lot more information online. After visiting St. Leon, continue about four miles south and you’ll come into the town of Dover. There is something about Dover I’ve always loved and I’m not quite sure what it is. Maybe it’s just the picturesque country beauty of the place. You’ll come to a four-way stop in Dover at the North Dearborn Road intersection. Make a right and head toward New Alsace. After a lovely drive of about three miles or so you will enter a beautiful little town. You will see a winery and a huge field of grapes on your right. Travel a short distance to the center of town and you’ll see the historic Klump’s Tavern on your left. It is a nondescript yellowish brick building constructed in the early 1800s and it has a ton of stories to tell. Across the street from Klump’s is St. Paul Catholic Church, a stunning historic building still used for Mass today. New Alsace is very cool. When you leave New Alsace you could go in about any direction and see beautiful sites and good old country living. I suggest turning around and going back the way you came on North Dearborn Road. Stay on North Dearborn Road when you come to the four-way stop in Dover; you’ll be heading toward Logan. You’ll come to a fourway stop in Logan at White’s Hill Road. Make a left. Travel down White’s Hill to State Route 46 and make a right. You’ll see Pinhook Road off to your right. Take it. Pinhook winds along the Whitewater and offers a variety of sweet sights including the river, woodlands, and fields of corn and beans before ending at its intersection with North Dearborn Road near Harrison. And there you have it - Ollie’s little drive. It is so easy to take for granted the beauty of our area. It’s where we live and it’s what we see so often. But it’s there my friends. It’s there.
