What Are Insect Growth Regulators
Insect growth regulators are pesticides that slow down, stop, or otherwise
interfere with an insect's maturation. To limit the rate at which insect
pesticide resistance is developing, these regulator chemicals are
combined with other pesticides. To boost productivity and yield per unit,
they aid in the eradication of insects during the early stages of
reproduction and lower the danger of pest attacks on fully developed
crops. These characteristics of IGRs have increased demand among
growers all around the world.
According to projections, the size of the global market will increase at a
CAGR of 6.16% from 2017 to 2022, reaching USD 1,054.3 million. Over
the past few years, a significant shift away from the development of
neurotoxic, broad-spectrum insecticides toward less toxic and more
environmentally friendly products has resulted in significant growth for
the global market.
The insect growth regulators market has been divided into three
categories based on the form: bait, liquid, and aerosol. Typically in the
form of concentrations, liquid insect growth regulators have a longer
shelf life. The concentrate-form insect growth regulator products are
mostly juvenile hormone analogs and mimics.
In both indoor and outdoor commercial pest control management, there is
an increasing need for insect growth regulators. To get rid of fleas,
mosquitoes, and other insects can be combined with pesticides. In order
to stop them from developing into adult egg-laying insects, insect growth
regulators stop the development of the juvenile stages of the targeted
insects, such as ants, cockroaches, fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, litter beetles,
and flying insects. They also have minimal toxicity levels, and some of
them can even be used in restaurants.
The primary market restraints are the low knockdown effect and lower
efficacy in eliminating adult insects. The knockdown effect is seen after
combining an IGR with other crop protection chemicals, such as
insecticides or pesticides because the active ingredient in an IGR is
intended to work on reproductive processes particular to insects. Hence,
when insect growth regulators are used as a standalone method of
treatment, a longer period is required for an IGR to be effective. These
regulators have a poor knockdown impact compared to other pest control
agents, which can be attributed to these considerations.
