Interview Techniques
If you have reached the interview stage of any job vacancy then you
must have already impressed the employer with your application.
But the job could be yours to lose. Below is a useful checklist.
“Darlington Borough Council is proud to be hosting this Jobs Fair, full of opportunities for local job
seekers to connect with local employers and offering a chance to progress with a career or find a new
career pathway.
Over 60 exhibitors are taking part including key employers with current vacancies in a range of sectors
including hospitality, Civil Service, transport, health and social care, enterprise, customer services, IT,
retail, professional and business services.
You can drop in and chat to a diverse range of local employers who have vacancies and opportunities.
You can also find out about other opportunities including training, apprenticeships, and self-employed
options.
Amongst the employers in attendance, there will be Aldi, Cummins, Darlington Economic Campus
including The Treasury and Department of International Trade, Darlington Borough Council, EE, Durham
Police, Royal Navy, NHS and many more. Representatives will be available to provide useful information
on any current and/or upcoming vacancies and helpful advice for applications; a great opportunity to
have a face-to-face discussion with prospective employers, all in one venue and at one time.
Feedback from previous jobs fairs has been really positive and people who attended have found them
very informative. The fair will be in an informal setting and aims to connect key employers with talented
people seeking new work, new skills or a completely new direction in their work journey.
This free event is open to all, and support organisations will also be on hand to offer advice and
guidance on applying and interviewing for job, or starting up a business.”

• Preparation is key Research the company by visiting its
website. Get a ‘feel’ for what drives its senior management
– the company aims and ethos – so take note of the ‘About
Us’ section and the boss’s ‘Welcome’.
• Insight Through your research you will also gain a valuable
insight into working conditions and their culture and language,
so you can use their phrases in the interview and sound
knowledgeable.
• Social media Make sure your social media platforms are
‘appropriate’ as they will research you online.
• First impressions are key They could make a decision on you
within the first 15 seconds and the ‘pre-interview chat’ is very
important.
• Smile you are on show! From the second you enter the room
smile and look interested. Offer your hand for a handshake.
Accept any offers of a drink as it will give you time to relax.
Ask them how they are. Respond to their welcoming
questions which will be non-job related.
• Speak They are desperate to learn as much as they can
about you. Do your best to answer the questions, and if you
struggle with any, throw it back to them with a “sorry, can I
just double-check what you mean”, which gives your brain time
to catch up and may result in them rephrasing the question to
make it clearer.
• Hobbies They might ask you what you do in your spare time.
Try to have something interesting to talk about especially if it
is your passion.
• Tell them what you have done Try and steer the conversation
to extra work you have put into studies, any work experience
completed, any charity or voluntary work carried out, any
awards won.
• Dress code Look smart and well-groomed as it indicates you
have made an effort. A smart shirt, or blouse, with smart trousers
or skirt. Make sure your shoes are clean as well! Feedback from
many local business owners is that jeans are not considered for
interview
• What do you think? They might ask your opinion on any
subject. Try to be balanced, offer a view from both sides and
don’t be too radical or extremist.
• Questions, questions Have at least three questions prepared
to ask them at the end of the interview. A good starting point
is “I noticed on your website…so what is…or how does that
work?” because this shows you have done your research.
• Don’t slip up Interviewers know that candidates relax once
the formal interview is over. So stay on your guard until you
have left the building.
• Follow-ups Don’t be afraid to follow up the interview with
a phone call saying how much you enjoyed the experience
and asking when you are likely to hear back.
• Feedback If you don’t get the job, don’t be angry, there could
be other vacancies coming up at the same place in the future.
Do ask for feedback as it will help you with the next interview.

regularly taking place in the borough.
Local and national press also advertise jobs both in print and online
and there are many jobs boards on which vacancies are posted. There
are a host of recruitment agencies around helping employers fill posts
and direct you towards your next career.
So there is plenty to go at when you are looking for a job or a fresh
start and if it all feels a tad overwhelming the National Careers Service
is always on hand to help you out.
Word of mouth, whether that’s in person or via
social media, is also a great way to find a job.
Get the message out there that you are looking
for work using friends, family, colleagues and
associates. Where do they work? Are they hiring?

Remember it’s a professional platform not a social one so care
needs to be taken to think about your profile and posts.
You can use it to connect with professionals, many of who
are desperate to recruit, learn more about the work you are
interested in, find and apply for jobs and receive advice and
support from experienced professionals.
The mechanics are easy but to sign up for a LinkedIn account
you’ll need a professional sounding email address free from any
inappropriate references. It may be better to create a new email
account that is simple, using only your name.
Once signed up, LinkedIn helps you with the rest guiding you
through creating a profile. The more information included the
better as it will be easier for employers to find.
Your profile photo is important too and must look professional.
It must be just you, set against a plain background, with your
face in the centre of the frame, be a good quality picture, not
blurry and be well lit so your face is visible. Look smart and wellgroomed
and smile.
Complete all sections including a headline, summary, and work
experience, volunteering experience, skills and education history
– then start connecting.
The headline is crucial as it promotes who you are and grabs the
attention of a recruiter, employer, or anyone in your network. It
may be the only information they see.
So in 120 characters try and make sure it says who you are, what
you do and what you want to be. It needs to be enough to get
people to read on or connect with you.
Your summary is your chance to let people know more about
you. It can attract employers who are hiring,
or recruiters who are looking for people on
their behalf, or clients.
It needs to tell your story so be passionate
about what you love. Talk about your goals
and write it in the first person (‘I’ not ‘he’ or
‘she’). Use phrases and keywords that show
you have researched the sector you are
interested in.
End the summary with a call to action, for
instance, if you want employers/potential
clients to contact you, include an email
address.
Words are cheap so any details of work
placements, shadowing or internships and
previous employment are crucial. Highlight
your achievements and show examples of
your work if you have online examples you
can link to. Show the value you have added in
the past.
Any examples of volunteering also helps
professionals build up a good picture of your
values. Employers are looking for people who
will be ‘a good fit’ for their company.
You can add up to 50 skills on your LinkedIn profile but add at
least five if you want to appear in searches. The more skills you
list, the higher up in searches you’ll appear.
If you aren’t sure about the skills to select then look at job
profiles to see what the sector is looking for.
Make it easy for employers to check you have the level of
qualifications they are looking for. They will also want to know
what you have gained from studying and concentrate on the
education most relevant to your career. Include achievements
such as awards, scholarships, presenting at a conference,
successful projects, any positions of responsibility.
Once all the details are input, use LinkedIn to build connections.
The more you have, the more people can find you.
Start with friends, family and people you know from university,
college or school and include endorsements for your skills to
show you can do the things you say you can.
When you meet people in a social setting or at networking
events, offer to connect with them and your network will soon
begin to grow.
Be active to maintain your presence on LinkedIn so you are
noticed by potential employers.
Check it often, like you do social media sites. Like, comment and
share articles and other people’s posts to get noticed by your
connections.
Create your own content to raise your profile and join groups
that are relevant for your chosen sector. Link with school, college
and university alumni groups.
Increase your chances of getting a job sooner by being
#OpenToWork. There are millions of jobs on LinkedIn and once
you have looked at a couple, the algorithms of the site start to
send you similar posts, making your task at lot easier. From the
jobs you click on, LinkedIn builds up a picture of your needs and
helps you achieve your goals.

Meet Rachael, a reablement coordinator
with the reablement team at Darlington
Borough Council. We asked Rachael to tell
us about her journey into her career and if
care was always something she wanted to
do.
“When I left school, I had no real idea of
‘what I wanted to do when I was an adult!’
I suppose I was more focussed on making
money – this led me to work in retail for six
years until I realised time was ticking and
I’d become the adult I had envisioned, and
I hadn’t progressed in terms of a career.
I stumbled into a job with a care agency,
something I never envisaged myself doing
to be honest. I was desperate to leave retail,
so this was hasty option, but something
I am so glad I did! Within my role as a
carer in the community I was able to learn
so much on the job, the experience was
honestly invaluable, I was also able to
gain qualifications like my level 2 and 3 in
adult health and social care among other
qualifications. The fact I was learning and
earning made such a difference and opened
my eyes to the opportunities in front of me.
“Fast forward a few years and I was still
within the care industry, now working in
residential care – so in a care home. I was
in the home throughout the Covid period,
and I have never experienced anything
like the teamwork, compassion, emotion,
and work family strength like this before.
It was an incredible experience to be part
of. Some residents had no family, as their
carer you become their family, their friend,
their shoulder and that it such a rewarding
part of the role. We would all laugh so much
and of course cry so much, it unlike any
other job. I progressed to a senior care and
support worker before deciding to take on a

As a reablement coordinator, my role now is
to assess those that have been in hospital,
for short term support, with the aim of
regaining independence, enabling them
to remain in their own homes and where
possible reducing the need for long term
support. Every day is different for me, from
writing assessments to understand how
someone is coping at home, to planning
support and working with other teams and
agencies to ensure we can achieve the goal
we have set together.”
“It’s strange when I think back to my
younger years and how I just didn’t have a
clue what I wanted to do or where I wanted
to be. My perception of working in care was
so wrong! I honestly thought I’d be helping
people in the toilet, essentially wiping
bums, and giving bed baths, but caring is
so much more than that. I have built some
incredible relationships with those I care
for, for them I may be the only person they
speak to for a couple of days at a time, I am
lifeline for them.
I wish I could give my 16-year-old self a
shake and steer myself off down the path
of adult health and social care sooner, but
then again, I believe my choices have led me
to where I am now, and I am grateful I’ve
had the journey I have. Yes, it hasn’t been
straight forward, but I have got here, and I
could not be happier.”
“I feel I have learnt through experience,
than I would have at college, which I think
proves that it is never too late for a career
change.
My advice to anyone considering moving
into a new career or starting their in care
would be…Go for it! Don’t be afraid! It’s
really not as scary as you think. Care isn’t
for everyone, but I wouldn’t be quick to
assume that it’s not for you. I was one of
those people and I will hold my hands up
that I was wrong and slightly ignorant to
the world of adult health and social care.
There is so much more to it. It is providing
support, it’s kindness, it’s being there to
listen to someone, holding their hand,
helping someone to feel good and look their
best, helping them feel empowered and be
motivated! It’s also providing the essential
support that some may need in the last few
days of their life, making them comfortable
and ensuring they are not alone. A career in
care is so rewarding, something I feel is hard
to match in other role - we really do make a
difference.”

The Importance of a Good CV
Search online and there is plenty of help on how to write a CV but
prospective employers will be able to spot a template. One size doesn’t
fit all and your CV needs to be bespoke to the job you are seeking. It also
has to reflect you to help it stand out from the others a company may
receive.
A CV is a short, written summary of your skills, achievements and
experience relating to a role you want. Employers often ask for a CV, and
if you are sending speculative letters to businesses you’d like to work
for, you’ll need to include one. They may have vacancies that aren’t
advertised and a good CV could get you that all-important interview.
Think about how your skills and experience match what the employer
is looking for. It is vital that you tailor your CV specifically to suit the job
description and the company.
Include all your qualifications with the most recent at the top. Previous
jobs, internships and volunteering experience should be listed with
a brief overview of your roles and responsibilities. Include your past
employers’ details and evidence of any training courses and driving
licences. Traditional CVs tend to be chronological, listing work and
education first, and starting with the most recent experience. Skillsbased
CVs focus on your job-related skills and personal qualities while
technical ones, such as professions like IT and engineering, highlight the
skills you have for that industry.
Creative CVs should link to an online portfolio, and could contain video
or infographics, while academic ones can be longer. Must haves include
contact details, such as your name, phone number and email address
(always use a professional sounding email).
You can also provide a link to a professional networking profile, such as
LinkedIn.
There is no longer any need to include age, date of birth, marital status,
or nationality. In your personal profile, think about the job and what the
employer is looking for to make it sound like you are the best person for
the post.
Sum up who you are and what you hope to do. Place it under your name
and contact details.
Depending on where you are in your career, the education history could
come next for college leavers but, if you have been working for some
time, the career details take precedence.
Include the names of your qualifications, school, college or university
and the dates you attended, the number of qualifications secured and
grades if they are impressive.
If you’re applying for your first job, focus on skills you’ve learned through
education, any part-time work, work experience, internships and
placements and volunteering. Hobbies, interests and achievements can
also attract an employer and will provide content to discuss during any
interview.
Work history can include placements, volunteering and any paid jobs,
listing these with the most recent first.
List the employer details, job title and the dates you worked there.
Include a brief summary of your roles and responsibilities and highlight
your strengths and skills, using words such as ‘organised, created, built,
managed, planned’, and your achievements giving positive examples.
If there are gaps in employment highlight the positive things you did
during this period.
References aren’t necessary at this stage but you could include that
‘references are available on request’. They will ask for references if you
get through to the next stage so give some thought to the best people to
approach.
Employers do receive many CVs and often have to decide quickly who
will be invited to interview. So your CV needs to stand out by looking tidy
and professional.
The starting point must be researching the job and company and fitting
the CV to it. On a practical note use a clear font such as Arial, Times
New Roman or Calibri, with a minimum size of 11. Use the same style
throughout and avoid gimmicks such as brightly coloured paper. Your
finished CV should be no more than two sides of A4.
Make it simple and quick to read by using headings, bullet points and
spacing, and be clear and to the point.
Always get someone else to read it because you can’t see your own
mistakes and double check your spelling and grammar. Save a backup
copy which you can amend and adapt to future jobs.
Always send a polite cover letter with your CV explaining why you are
applying for the post.
