These Famous People Used Standing Desks
The standing desk has always been trendy. In addition to the growing number of
employees at Facebook, Google, and yes, even the White House trading in their
sitting desks for standing ones, we thought it would be interesting to highlight some
famous people who also used a standing desk.
A stand up desk sits high off the floor so a worker can either stand at it or sit on a
high stool. Mark Zuckerberg chooses to work at a standing desk and encourages
employees at his Facebook office to use them as well.
Officials at Palo Alto-based Facebook say a number of employees asked about height
adjustable desks after news articles were published about the health risks of sitting
all day. In recent years, many medical studies have concluded that sitting for too long
leads to increased health risks.
Sitting all day is not good for your mind, body and health. A good mix of standing
and sitting gives your body an extra measure of energy and creativity. I guess this is
why so many powerful and creative people from history and present have used
standing desks.
Popular Science first covered the corner standing desk in late 1800’s and continued
to stick with the topic up until the mid 1960’s.
Leonardo Da Vinci: It is said that standing desks date at least back to the 1400s -
Leonardo Da Vinci used one. He stood by his standing desk as he created the "Mona
Lisa."
Thomas Jefferson: Thomas Jefferson worked at an adjustable height standing desk.
One of the more interesting pieces of furniture owned by Jefferson was a tall, sit or
stand desk for reading or drawing.
The desk could be adjusted with a ratchet stand, while a bail handle pulled forward
the front of the desk to reveal a flat, lined writing surface.
Ernest Hemingway: Along with being known for his great writing and unique
personality, Hemingway was also a big proponent of the standing desk.
"Writing and travel broaden your ass if not your mind," said the author. "I like to
write standing up."
Benjamin Franklin: One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was a
renowned polymath, leading author, printer, politician, scientist, inventor, civic
activist, statesman, diplomat and, of course, user of a small standing desk.
Sir Winston Churchill: While plotting ways to outsmart the Nazi’s, the British Prime
Minister wasn’t slouched in an armchair. He was known for being bolt upright at his
standing desk while writing and thinking about tactical methods to end the war.
Standing up while working could place you in the same league as these great
individuals who managed to reinforce their mind, body and health by using a stand
desk.
With one-touch digital height adjustment, 15-minute assembly, and free shipping, we
believe FEZiBO can provide standing desks you need.
Five Things You Should Know Before Getting a Standing Desk
Sitting, it’s becoming fashionable to note, is the “new smoking”. Sedentary behaviour
dominates modern life, just as smoking did some decades ago. And the health risks
posed by prolonged sitting are making it frowned upon, just as smoking is.
A growing body of research suggests too much sitting increases the risk of developing
diseases including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It may even cause premature
death. The good news is that being physically active offers some protection against
the harms of sitting; research shows standing or replacing sitting time with the
activities of daily living (such as housework, gardening, or walking) could reduce the
health risks posed by too much sitting.
But that’s no excuse to stop exercising: adults should limit their daily sitting time and
break up prolonged periods of sitting, in addition to regular physical activity, for
better health and well-being. In other words, reducing sitting time won’t replace the
well-established health benefits of regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity,
such as brisk walking, running, cycling or dancing.
The health risks linked to prolonged periods of sitting are particularly pertinent to
people with largely sedentary jobs, such as office workers. And a growing number of
people are getting electric standing desks in response to the increasing knowledge
about the harms of their sedentary lifestyles.
Standing desks, or sit-stand contraptions, are an effective way for office workers to
incorporate more standing into their workday. But can you transition to standing at
work without causing yourself harm and injury? Of course you can, although there are
some precautions that will ensure you not only avoid injury but also stick to standing
in the long term.
