here during the past
five months as a
Canadian National
Telegraphs operator,
spent Thanksgiving at
his home in Peterbell
near Sudbury. He
encountered good luck
on a partridge-hunting
expedition during the
week-end. He and another
operator in training,
Ray Keizer of North Bay,
Many village and district
people were at the
Woodbridge Dairy snack
bar for its formal opening
on Saturday, Oct. 6. The
attractive interior was
brightened by large gift
baskets of flowers from the
Stewart Transport and
Harry Allen of Woodbridge;
Frank Reeves of Humber
Summit; and Archie Cousins
of Aurora. The three members
of the snack bar are
Mrs. E. Ballingall, Mrs. Don
Brownlee and Mrs. Walter
Fernley. There were free ice
cream and popsicle treat for
boys and girls on Saturday
evening. The new nickel on
six-for-a-quarter record player
has 100 push-button selections.
There also is a coin selfvending
Coca Cola machine.
The new snack bar is on the
south side of No. 7 highway a
short distance west of 8th
Avenue.

Preliminary steps toward setting up a 15-
lamp street lighting system in Lloydtown
were taken at a meeting in the school on
Tuesday evening, Oct. 9. The system proposed
will include modern bracket fixtures
and a photostatic switch which will turn
lights on and off as required. All villagers at
the meeting appeared to be in favor of the
plan. One of the next steps will be to secure
a detailed expression of opinion from those
in the village who would be meeting at the
cost of installation and upkeep.

Ivan Vanderburgh spent part of the

Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr.,
R., Mass., said today that the
nation's new tactical atomic
weapons should be used in
Korea if they can be
employed "efficiently and
profitably." Lodge told the
senate that a "strong argument"
can even be made for
using the atomic bomb to
blast "a defensive line of
atomic craters... across the
Korean peninsula."

Prime Minister Clement
Attlee hit the halfway mark
tonight of an auto stop campaign
through Britain in
which he hopes to beat
Winston Churchill's conservatives
the same way
President Truman beat the
republicans in 1948. The
unassuming, 68-year-old
Attlee reeled off nine speeches
to local meetings through
the day to boost his total to
27 since Monday when he
began the eight-day tour he
hopes will bear the conservatives
in the Oct. 25 elections.

West German
Chancellor Konrad
Adenaurer regards the latest
east German bid for unity
talks as an attempt to torpedo
the Bonn government's
negotiations with the western
powers. The east German
parliament yesterday invited
the west German parliament
to discuss the reunification
of Germany, a peace treaty
and the withdrawal of occupation
forces.
Thanksgiving week-end helping Carl
Beynon at his jewelry store in
Sutton. Ivan had developed much
interest and a fine hand in watchrepairing
when working on
Saturdays in the former
Woodbridge store of Mr. Beynon.

G.W. Berney, who will be
92 in December, still has a keen
eye and deft hand in making
stove pipes at the Berney store
here. He started learning the
trade at Parkhill in 1875, six
years before taking over the
business in Caledon East now
carried on by his son, James
Berney. When starting the
intricate job of making a reducer
"T" pipe on Saturday afternoon,
he was given some
assistance by his grandson,
Peter Berney, 7, who knew
where to find any of the shop
tools required.

Only geraniums in
the massive veranda boxes
fronting the Pine ST., home of
Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Smith survived
the sharp frost of last
Wednesday morning. The dropping
temperature first hit the
foliage.

Several
from Woodbridge were at two
Weston High School student
parties on Saturday evening.
Those in form 11-C enjoyed a
period of bowling and then
gathered at the home in
Weston of Don Pidgeon, one
of the class representatives.
Form 12-B had a weiner
roast at Don Eddy Park.
The new
Bell Telephone directory for
Woodbridge and Schomberg,
was mailed to customers here last
week, contains numbers for subscribers in
five additional exchanges. The October, 1951
book has listings for Woodbridge, Schomberg,
Aurora, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Roche's
Point, Thornhill, Claremont, King, Maple,
Markham, Sutton, Unionville, and Uxbridge.
W.O. Misner, Bell Telephone manager for the
Woodbridge-Brampton region said this week
that in the new directory the exchanges listed
were selected on the basis of their inter-community
interests. Containing more than 8,000 new
and changed listings, the new book has 124
pages and a buff cover. On the front cover of
the new book is a notice in red to remind subscribers
not to use the directory for Schomberg

He's Mike to his close friends, Lester Bowles,
Pearson to the vital statistics people and
External Affairs Ministers to the country as a
whole. For newspaper men he is also a source
for good news stories. For instance there wasn't
much doing in the way of big stories on
Parliament Hill. There was some behind-thescenes
activity as the cabinet got ready for the
fall session but government spokesmen kept
their plans to themselves. Preparations for the
visit of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of
Edinburgh had been told already in great
detail. Then Mr. Pearson held his regular press
conference, gave the story-hungary reporters
different tidbits, all with considerable meat to
them. Naturally because of Prime Minister St.
Laurent's visit to Washington to discuss the St.
Lawrence seaway, it was a top subject. The
External Affairs Minister, who many people
see as a possible choice to succeed Mr. St.
Laurent as Liberal leader, had something to
say about it.
calls
until after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17. This
is because the exchange there is being converted
from magneto to common battery operation,
and many new numbers will be effective
after that date. Because of the many new and
changed listings, Mr. Misener urged subscribers
to check any personal lists of telephone
numbers against the numbers listed in
the new book and to make any changes that
are necessary. "Looking up the desired number
before calling," the manager said, "helps
to avoid getting wrong numbers and saves
time for both the calling and the called parties.
'Information' should be called only when
the number you are seeking is not listed in the
directory," he added. It is one of 50 telephone
directories published each year by The Bell
Telephone Company in its Ontario- Quebec territory.
The new directory also contains helpful
information as to the use of the telephone and
long distance rates to many points. Space is
provided on page one for the listing of emergency
numbers.
