WHY CHOOSE
ST MARY’S?
From our Cambridge location and academic results,
to our extra-curricular opportunities and inspiring
role models – there are many reasons to choose us.
Aim high
As a High Performance Learning school, we teach
skills and attitudes proven to help young people to
aim high – not just in exams, but in life.
Our 17th century foundress, Mary Ward
dedicated her life to educating girls – believing
that ‘by God’s grace women in time to come
will do much’. We encourage each pupil to be
and do all they can.
Mary Ward lived a life of integrity, courage
and love. As a role model for our pupils,
her achievements provide a core moral and
spiritual foundation for life at St Mary’s School.
stmaryscambridge.co.uk/ethos
Set no limits
Here, everything is possible: leadership, science,
mathematics, sport… our pupils break down gender
stereotypes, pursuing their goals free of limitation.
Have integrity
As a Mary Ward School, our education is built on our
Catholic heritage, which places timeless values such
as integrity, justice and compassion at the heart of
everyday school life.
Be courageous
Each pupil’s individual talents are valued, and they
develop the self-belief, courage and resilience they
need to make their unique contribution to the world.
Craft sessions, dance and cookery classes, plus
regular trips to enjoy punting, bowling, the cinema
or theatre are just a few of our organised activities
which keep pupils busy outside school hours. At
weekends, we travel further afield with adventures
including visits to London museums and galleries,
Manchester and the Harry Potter Studios.
INTERNATIONAL FOOD FAIR
BOARDING
OPTIONS
BOARDING
FAQS
From Year 5, age 9, international students can
board on either a full-time or weekly basis.
Guardianship
Full time boarders
Full boarders return home for half term and
school holidays. Most of our boarders are
full time and therefore are in school during
weekends in term time leading to a vibrant
atmosphere full of dynamic activity and fun.
Weekly boarders
Weekly boarders go home at the end of
each school week, returning on a Sunday
evening or Monday morning.
TIER 4
SPONSORSHIP
We are licensed as a Tier 4 Sponsor by UK Visas
and Immigration and offer sponsorship for child
student visas for our full time boarders.
See: stmaryscambridge.co.uk/visa
Idyllic Cambridge location
Boarders without a family member in the
UK require a guardian in the UK. For
assistance in selecting a guardian, we
recommend using AEGIS, the Association
for the Education and Guardianship of
International Students. Families must ensure
guardianship is in place before pupils arrive
at St Mary’s.
Guardians have to live within 75 miles of
St Mary’s School and be able to come
to St Mary’s School at short notice, if
necessary. They must be able to host the
student in school holidays, or in exceptional
circumstances such as illness. Guardians
also play a vital role in communicating
effectively between parents, school and the
student, including attending parents’
evenings and other key events.
Exeat weekends
We do not have Exeat weekends. However,
boarders can arrange to visit their
guardians or go home at the weekend,
providing written permission is given to the
Housemistress at least 48 hours in advance.
JOINING ST MARY’S
HOW TO APPLY
We welcome pupils with a broad range of academic abilities, who are
enthusiastic and have a desire to engage in learning.
International admissions
Places for international students are offered on the basis of an individual
interview (in person or via Skype), alongside a selection of age-appropriate
activities and assessments, plus a reference from a current school.
We welcome both direct applications to our admissions team or applications
made via an educational agent. We accept applications to all year groups
(except Year 11 and 13).
Demand for our boarding places is very high, therefore we recommend that you
apply as early as possible: at least 12 months before your desired start date.
For full details please visit: stmaryscambridge.co.uk/international
Interviews
We want to understand each pupil’s potential and interviews are conducted
via Skype, or in person. We want to hear about academic interests, as well
as wider activities such as sport, music, art or community service. The
process will hopefully feel more like ‘a chat’ than an interview!
