With more than 300 concerts and performances scheduled<br />

throughout the year, JAMD provides ample opportunity for<br />

students to appear onstage. Student and teacher ensembles<br />

including orchestras, the Jerusalem Academy <strong>Dance</strong> Ensemble,<br />

and choirs, have received international acclaim<br />

and participate in festivals and special<br />

projects all over the world.<br />

Students begin the program with a pre-semester course<br />

of their choice in the morning, followed by the Israeli<br />

Choreographers Workshops, including technique class,<br />

rehearsals, and performance of works with outstanding Israeli<br />

choreographers, in the afternoon.<br />

Housing<br />

Participants are housed in the modern Scopus<br />

Student Village, adjacent to the Hebrew<br />

University campus on Mount Scopus. Each<br />

student is allocated a private, air-conditioned<br />

bedroom in a suite with 4 other bedrooms as well<br />

as a living room, a kitchen, and bathroom facilities.<br />

A supermarket and self-service laundry can also be<br />

found in the Student Village.<br />

Office of Student Life (OSL)<br />

OSL plans a wide array of extracurricular activities<br />

throughout the year. Popular OSL activities include:<br />

• Sea to Sea – a three-day hiking trip from the<br />

Mediterranean to the Sea of Galilee<br />

• Overnight in Bedouin tents in the Negev Desert<br />

• Tours of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and other cities<br />

• Bike trips, cultural activities, and more<br />

Social events and holiday celebrations provide<br />

great opportunities to meet other international<br />

students and Israelis.<br />

Madrichim – Counselors<br />

A team of specially selected Israeli students called<br />

madrichim resides in the Student Village and helps<br />

international students adjust to life in Israel.<br />

Health & Counseling Services<br />

Comprehensive health insurance is included in the<br />

tuition fee. Students also have access to an inhouse<br />

psychologist.<br />

Sports Center<br />

The Lerner Family Indoor Sports Complex,<br />

located near the Student Village, includes a semi-<br />

Olympic swimming pool, sauna, gym, weight<br />

room, aerobic fitness center, and nutrition clinic.<br />

Adjacent to the complex are 10 outdoor tennis<br />

courts. Students may participate in a wide variety<br />

of classes offered at the center. Free membership<br />

is included in the tuition fee!<br />

<strong>Dance</strong> Curriculum<br />

Classical Ballet<br />

Based on traditional techniques, including the<br />

Vaganova technique and Royal Academy of <strong>Dance</strong><br />

syllabus, as well as all elements of barre, centre, and<br />

full combinations from adagio through petite and<br />

grande allegro.<br />

Contemporary <strong>Dance</strong><br />

Based on the modern dance techniques of Merce<br />

Cunningham and Martha Graham, as well as<br />

contemporary release techniques and Ohad<br />

Naharin’s Gaga; taught by dancers of the Batsheva<br />

<strong>Dance</strong> Company.<br />

Choreography<br />

Production of original student works under the<br />

guidance of working faculty choreographers, in<br />

cooperation with student composers from JAMD’s<br />

Department of Music Composition.<br />

Repertoire Workshops<br />

Intensive rehearsals with contemporary<br />

Israeli choreographers creating works with<br />

<strong>Dance</strong>Jerusalem students.<br />

Improvisation<br />

Structured improvisation in cooperation with<br />

students from both JAMD’s Cross-Disciplinary<br />

Music Department and the Bezalel Academy of<br />

Arts and Design.<br />

<strong>Dance</strong> in Israel Seminar<br />

Students study the development of Israeli<br />

contemporary dance, attend performances of Israeli<br />

dance companies, and travel on field trip residencies.<br />

Security<br />

The safety, security, and well-being of students<br />

is the primary concern of Hebrew University and<br />

JAMD. A comprehensive security orientation is<br />

given to all students upon arrival. All campus and<br />

Student Village entrances are guarded, and the<br />

campuses and Student Village are patrolled around<br />

the clock. Student activities, whether on or off<br />

campus, meet the strictest security requirements.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

<strong>Dance</strong> students with a grade point average (GPA)<br />

of 3.0 and above (or equivalent) are eligible to<br />

apply, including entering freshman and graduate<br />

students. Applicants will be required to audition,<br />

and applications will be jointly reviewed by RIS<br />

and JAMD.<br />
