- Dympna ron of Victims of Nervous DisordersSt. Dympna was born in the 7th Century to a pagan father and a devout Christianmother from a noble family. A saintly priest Fr.Gerebran taught Dympna spirituallyand academically and at an early age she devoted her life to Christ and took a vow ofchastity.At the age of 14 her mother died but the strong faith she had carried Dympna through.Her father greatly mourned his wife's passing and his advisers persuaded him to takesolace in a 2nd marriage. He asked his counsellors to seek out a lady for him as goodas his 1st wife and they came back and told him there was nobody as beautiful as hisdaughter Dympna. He then wanted to marry her but she was not happy about thatand asked for time to consider. During this time she was advised to take herself awayby Fr.Gerebran.Dympna, Fr.Gerebran, the court jester and his wife took flight from Ireland to Gheel inBelgium. When her father found out about this he sought persuade her to come backbut she would not and her father cut her head off with a dagger. A large painting themartyrdom of Dympna hangs in the old chapel.The glorious crown of martyrdom was accorded to Dympna at the age of 15. The dayof her death was 15th May and consequently her feast day. Her tomb is at Gheel andher relics are there in a golden reliquary. A relic of St. Dympna (a piece of bone) hasbeen held by the parish for the last 100 years. Over time she became the patron ofvictims of nervous disorders and many people have been known to visit her tomb inGheel and have been cured by her intercession.55
