The sky blue jar is decorated under the glaze with cobalt blue and white slip ‘dragonsand clouds’ in a circular design. Recessed within the low foot, the sky-blue base ofthe jar is painted with a six-character Qianlong reign mark in seal script.The jar was formerly in the Collection of Thomas English Cody, whose great-unclewas the famous Buffalo Bill Cody. Buffalo Bill Cody brought the Wild West toAmerican audiences; Thomas English brought the Far East to America with hiscollection of Chinese art.Compare a pear-shaped vase with near identical decoration of dragons andscrollwork in the Royal Collection Trust (RCIN 730).
