Welcome 

Welcome to the 65th Season of Music and Arts at Shrewsbury School. 

As ever we have some fantastic musical events planned for this year, 

starting with one of the world’s leading brass bands, Foden’s Band. Foden’s 

Band are the current ‘Double National Champions of Great Britain’ and 

have performed in many major venues in the UK. We can’t wait to see 

them on stage in the Alington Hall. Returning after last year’s sell out show, 

Rhos Male Voice Choir bring the sound of the valleys back into the heart 

of the Maidment. 

We welcome our new Head of Choral Music, Richard Robbins, under 

whose leadership, vocal performances continue to go from strength to 

strength. The lunchtime concerts are back every Friday at 1.30pm in the 

Maidment building, these concerts are free and open to everyone. No 

prior booking is necessary. This year’s repertoire is typically eclectic and 

exciting, including jazz, classical and contemporary work. There are many 

opportunities to hear our students and members of Shrewsbury’s talented 

music faculty in concert during the season. 

We are delighted to be partnering with The Shropshire Music Trust and 

Shrewsbury School Community Choir who will bring many remarkable 

concerts to this season’s packed events schedule. Concerts include, the 

popular two piano recital with Peter Bradley-Fulgoni and John Moore, the 

return of the sell-out cabaret performance a Trio with Joe Stilgoe, 

the popular Christmas concert ‘Messiah’ and many more. 

The Barnes Theatre programme 2023-24 offers a rich variety of 

opportunities for the Salopian community. Whatever your taste in drama, 

we hope that you will find something in the following pages to enjoy. From 

classic plays by Brecht and Chekhov, to contemporary musicals and new 

writing, the programme seeks to entertain and inspire. 

Our dance programme has grown rapidly over the last few years, with 2023 

seeing the inaugural John Weaver Dance Festival. Now in its second year, 

we look forward to seeing the festival grow even further and welcoming 

more of Shropshire’s dancers to compete alongside Shrewsbury students. 

Finally, the Art School will be exhibiting the work of Salopian artists 

throughout the year, beginning with the Old Salopian Exhibition in 

October. 

As ever, we are hugely grateful to our sponsors for the season and 

Shrewsbury School Governing Body for their continued support for the 

Arts at the School. With this support we are able to produce a programme 

that offers much to enjoy for the community in Shropshire and beyond. 

The Performing Arts have long been the jewel in Shrewsbury’s crown, and 

we are proud to have been recognised for Excellence in the Creative Arts 

in the 2023 TES Awards. Your support as audience members and visitors 

is vital to what we do at Shrewsbury School, and we are lucky in having 

so many of you coming regularly to attend our concerts and exhibitions.

Charities 

Once again we are delighted to assist the student-led 

Charities Committee with their fundraising activities 

by holding retiring collections at our free admission 

concerts. If you have enjoyed the concert that you 

have attended, then please do feel free to pop a few 

coins or a note into the collection bucket at the end 

of the evening. Every penny collected will go into our 

charities account and be distributed to charities. Last 

year, the Committee raised a wonderful £33,000 for 

20 charities. 

The School continues to support two main charities, 

The Shewsy (our youth club in Everton); We are 

now supporting Restart Africa an Orphanage in Gilgil 

Kenya. Restart was founded by Mary Coulson in 2008 

after election violence in Kenya led to many people 

becoming displaced and children being abandoned 

through extreme poverty. It offers children a chance 

to Restart their lives and we are currently raising 

money to help educate the children at private Kenyan 

schools where education is significantly better than 

the state sponsored schools. The charity also offers 

people a chance to volunteer with the children and 

many Salopians have done just that in their Gap Years. 

There is a planned trip to visit Restart this year.

Shrewsbury School 

Community Choir 

We are a friendly, non-auditioning choir aiming to perform a wide range of 

classical and contemporary choral works to a high standard. 

• We are able to use the unrivalled rehearsal and performance facilities at 

Shrewsbury School, by kind permission of the Headmaster. 

• Our conductor is Richard Robbins, Head of Choral Music at 

Shrewsbury School. 

• We are supported by the Shrewsbury School Music Department and 

Orchestra and other local musicians. 

• We give around four concerts each year, including under our Shropshire 

Charity Concerts banner Handel’s Messiah on 16th December in 

Shrewsbury Abbey at 7.30pm, when we raise money for local good causes. 

The choir was formed in 1982 and is now some 100 strong. Our first concerts 

of the year will be held in the Alington Hall during St Cecilia weekend in

for the latest information about our activities. 

Why not consider joining the choir? No connection with the School is 

needed, and our rehearsals are generally held on Monday evenings during 

term time in the Maidment Auditorium. Parents, relatives and guardians as

Exciting repertoire and great coaching in a nurturing environment.

‘Symphonic Sundays’ has been set up to support and nurture young 

talented musicians from the locality. The only entry requirement is 

that your child has taken Grade 3 on their instrument. 

New for next year, the launch of Symphonic Sunday Sinfonia an 

orchestra for young musicians working up to Grade 3 level, as long 

as they can confidently play and read 5 notes. Rehearsals will be 

from 12-1 on the same dates in the Maidment.

Art School 

MSB by James St Clair Wade Old Salopian James St Clair Wade Letterpress artwork by Rachel Lloyd 

OS (OLD SALOPIANS) EXHIBITION: James St.Clair Wade – 

Retrospective ‘The Eye of the Architect’ 27th Sept -16th October 

James St. Clair Wade was educated at Shrewsbury School, and studied 

architecture at St. John’s College, Cambridge and Harvard. 

As a student he worked for Arrol and Snell in Shrewsbury and produced the 

concept designs for Carline Fields, a sheltered housing development on the 

banks of the Severn, which was later selected for inclusion in the Prince of 

Wales’s A Vision of Britain (1989). 

After qualification he worked for eight years at Nicholas Hare Architects in 

London building up experience through a wide range of commercial and 

educational projects, including new boarding houses at Leighton Park School 

in Reading and Benenden School in Kent. 

In 1996 he moved back to Shrewsbury and rejoined Arrol and Snell 

Architects as a senior architect, remaining with them for more than twenty 

years. During this time he has been involved in numerous conservation and 

new build projects, ranging from cottages to country houses and rural parish 

churches to cathedrals. 

His new classical house, The Mount, is one of the few new buildings in 

Shropshire to be listed in the latest edition of Pevsner’s The Buildings of 

England (2006) and his cloistered design for the Trinity Centre, a new church 

hall at Meole Brace near Shrewsbury, was awarded the EASA President’s 

Award in 2008. His conservation work has also been recognised with the 

SPAB John Betjeman Award (2005) and a Georgian Group Award (Best 

Restoration of a Church, 2010), both for an extended programme of repairs 

at St. Alkmund’s Church in Shrewsbury. 

As an accomplished artist and draughtsman, he has illustrated several 

books and contributed a regular series of caricatures to Shooting Times. 

In April 2019 he began work on an ambitious project to record the 

historic streetscape of Shrewsbury in a series of architectural views allowing 

the whole length of each street to be viewed simultaneously. This is called 

the Shrewsbury Streetscape Project.

Sharon Griffin – Sculptor 

Sharon Griffin is a figurative artist who 

specialises in ceramic sculpture directly inspired 

by the woodland, where she often explores 

places in which to ‘breathe’.... The textures, the 

smells, the secret spaces all provide a kind of 

‘awakening’... Sharon uses the human figure to 

help communicate a sense of deeper meaning 

within humankind and of her own experience 

of being a woman. The sculptures represent a 

state of being; internal struggles of love, loss, 

displacement, vulnerability and strength. Sharon 

uses clay as a sculptural medium; a 3D canvas. 

Preliminary sketches in 2D and drawings from 

life inform the work, helping ideas evolve. Once 

in the workshop however, when the clay is being 

worked with directly, the sculpture is allowed to 

reveal itself as it is worked with: a conversation 

with clay. 

Dr Maria Goloteeva – Art Historian 

Dr Maria Golovteeva holds a PhD in History of 

Art from the University of St Andrews. She has 

worked in the London art sphere for several 

years, including four years at Sotheby’s and 

Christie’s auction houses. She currently works 

on cataloguing, researching and digitising 

the Menil Archive at the Warburg’s Institute 

Photographic Collection, University of London

Once again, some of Shrewsbury’s finest young musicians will be giving 

a morning coffee concert in this well- established series at Emmanuel 

Church Didsbury. The programme includes the ‘crème-de-la-crème’ of 

Shrewsbury’s musical talent, including impressive solos and intricate 

ensemble performances. Always a popular concert with a sizable local 

audience, but there is always room for supporters and friends who can 

join us for this special event.

Joe Stilgoe is one of the UK’s foremost Jazz Cabaret pianists and vocalists 

whose last performance in Shrewsbury was a total sellout. This promises 

to be an evening of wit, virtuosity and fabulously accessible jazz, both 

vocal and instrumental, all presented with wonderful panache and style by 

Joe himself.

The second of our visits to St Alkmund’s

The John Weaver Festival is the School’s major annual dance 

event, consisting of a dance showcase, masterclasses and a

Rhos 

Male Voice Choir

Côr Meibion Rhosllannerchrugog 

Founded in 1891, Rhos Male Voice Choir 

is one of the most successful in Wales. In 

2013 the choir took first place in the male 

voice choir competitions at the Llangollen 

International Eisteddfod, the National 

Eisteddfod and S4C’s ‘Côr Cymru’. This 

unique hat-trick followed wins in the National 

Eisteddfod in 2011 and 2012. The choir also 

won again in Llangollen in 2015.

Foden’s Band

Foden’s were formed in 1902 by Edwin Foden, originally named ‘The Foden’s 

Motorworks Band.’ From these humble beginnings, few would have thought 

they would go on to win 12 British Open titles, 16 National Championships of 

Great Britain and an unparalleled double hat-trick in 1932, 33, 34 and in 1936, 

37 and 38. 

The band currently holds the record for the number of Area Contest wins, 

with an unprecedented 24 North West Area titles. Since 1902 they have 

maintained their positions as one of the World’s leading bands on and off the 

contest stage. 

In 2012 Foden’s won the ‘Double’, being crowned the 2012 British Open / 

National Champions and in 2018 2021 and 2022, were once again crowned 

the National Champions. As well as being successful on the contest front, the 

band have won numerous awards for cd releases, regularly appear on BBC TV 

and Radio and perform at all the countries leading concert halls. 

Around the world, Foden’s Band is a trademark that musicians associate with 

inestimable class and musicianship. 

The band is led by Musical Director James Llewelyn Jones and accompanied 

by Deputy Musical Director Kevin Whitley.

We are very excited to be hosting this afternoon of Jazz, performed 

by the talented group ‘All things Jazz’ (aka The Fraggle Brothers) 

at the iconic Pizza Express Live, Holborn. 

With chamber music thriving at school, this evening recital will include 

performances of all the ensembles that have entered the Pro Corda 

Chamber Music Festival. 

Tickets are £10 which will not include food, this should be ordered

have had a long-standing duo partnership, 

and have given many such recitals at 

Shrewsbury School over the last thirty years

Salopian Week 

Monday 24th to Saturday 29th June 

Salopian Week is the highlight of the School 

calendar and is a wonderful way to celebrate 

the end of the academic year. It runs from 

Monday 24th June and culminates with 

Speech Day on Saturday 29th June. 

There are plenty of events organised 

throughout the week, including 

performances of ‘Mother Courage & Her 

Children’, the Summer Cabaret Concert and 

the annual Bumpers race.
