2021-2022 | Gratitude Report
Thank
You!
It’s easy to celebrate large accomplishments like
serving our community for 65 years. But here at
KidsAbility we put a special emphasis on the small
celebrations. And each time a child and their family
begin their KidsAbility journey, we think of
you, our supporters.
Two constants remained throughout 2021-2022: KidsAbility’s commitment to
families and the loyalty of our donors, partners and generous community. It was you
who helped build stronger families and a healthier community so that even our
youngest children progressed towards their goals, supported by our expert clinicians
and dedicated support staff of over 300 who bring their best every day.
KidsAbility connued to meet the needs of children, youth and their families in the most
responsive ways – whether in person or using technology – each according to their
needs. KidsAbility is grateful to the Ontario government for its investment in pediatric
rehabilitaon which enabled us to expand our community-based programs. In addion,
new ausm funding allowed us to introduce early intervenon programs such as the
Caregiver-Mediated Early Years and the Entry to School program. Each of these
iniaves connue our commitment to promote barrier-free access to services and
help children and youth live happier and healthier lives.
Children with developmental needs have been negavely impacted by the pandemic.
Demand on pediatric therapy connue and have never been higher. To begin to solve
these complex problems we established a Bright Ideas staff campaign to design,
implement, and evaluate the impact of new approaches to improve access to care.
In the fall, our organizaon completed an accreditaon process with Accreditaon
Canada. It was a pivotal moment for our team to proudly showcase our exceponal
work of upholding the safety and quality of family-centred care during a parcularly
2
challenging me. KidsAbility received an unprecedented Exemplary Status and an evaluave score of 100%, a proud accomplishment that
demonstrates our commitment to clinical excellence.
KidsAbility was quick to recognize the challenges that some children experience in receiving a vaccinaon. We were excited to host Special
Accommodaon COVID-19 Vaccinaon Clinics in partnership with the Region of Waterloo and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health Units.
In total, 21 sensory-friendly vaccinaon clinics were held over four months with nearly 100 KidsAbility staff generously volunteering their me and
experse to help 600+ children and youth region-wide get vaccinated. And we are gearing up to do the same for the youngest members of our
community in the fall of 2022.
Our community gave generously through KidsAbility Foundaon fundraising campaigns and events in 2021/2022 — $2.7M was raised to provide
life-changing pediatric therapy and services, innovave programs and technology to help children achieve their goals. Our Superhero Challenge
was a community success with family and corporate parcipants and teams raising awareness and funds alongside our Rogers media partners
and our presenng sponsor, Linamar.
Donaons remain crically important, for as much as we have to celebrate in providing services to over 14,000 children and youth, referrals connue
to rise as does the cost to provide therapy. Even with provincial government funding received, over 2,000 children currently wait on average 29 weeks
for an inial assessment. Like you, we believe no child should wait to access the support they need to thrive.
In response, our Foundaon will connue to engage the united and collecve power of our community to address this gap. Donaons are simply
life-changing for a child and essenal to ensure the needs of families are counted, realized and supported in their KidsAbility journey. These are
excing mes ahead— ones that we will realize together with you.
We will lead with innovaon to find new soluons for complex challenges to address wait mes across programs and services. We will pursue clinical
excellence by employing caring and compassionate staff who are experts in their field. We will dream big as we engage each of our stakeholders
to envision the best possible experience with KidsAbility. And in all we aim to achieve, we will act with diligence to uphold values of integrity,
collaboraon, accountability, inclusion and respect.
As an organizaon and a community, we will seek the brightest possibilies so that every child, family, volunteer and staff member will be able to
achieve their full potenal.

“
It’s been really important to me as a first-time mother to
do everything possible to help Everleigh blossom. It is very
challenging navigating this unknown territory. KidsAbility
and their team of therapists and social workers have been
instrumental in helping Everleigh and our family.
They work together to help us learn to advocate as well as
introduce us to a world of resources and equipment that
allow her to be supported and communicate.
I’m in a much better place to explore every day with Everleigh
because I know they are there for us and really care.”
– Becca, Everleigh’s mother
Serving our
community
better.
At KidsAbility, we know that providing an
environment where each family feels connected,
welcomed, included and supported is the best
way to serve our community.
When our therapy teams noced some parents of Eritrean descent struggling to
understand their child's diagnosis of ausm, they were keen to understand how
families felt about the diagnosis and their expectaons. Our therapists knew if they
could improve their cultural understanding of Eritrean customs and beliefs, they could
explain to families what their child could achieve in ways that were most meaningful
and impacul to them.
Cultural conversaons emerged through a virtual workshop in partnership with KW
Mulcultural Centre, KidsAbility’s community provider for interpreve services. From
firsthand accounts given by local Eritrean community leaders, therapists and support
staff were introduced to customs and beliefs, learning about values related to food,
educaon, medical diagnosis, and disabilies.
“Receiving a diagnosis of ausm can be challenging for any family,” explains Clinical
Manager Jessica Adams. “Within the Eritrean culture specifically, we learned that
some parents feel exceponal guilt about their child’s diagnosis. By increasing our
cultural understanding, we build trust with families so that we can be more responsive
in supporng their needs and the services we offer for their child.”
Speech-Language Pathologist Martha Plienegger benefited greatly from the workshop.
She now brings a new perspecve on the different ways culture can influence how a
family defines success.
For Martha to best meet the needs of Eritrean families, an interpreter joins her therapy
sessions with families to describe her words, acons and techniques in Tigrinya (the
Eritrean language). Together, they review weekly goals and discuss expectaons
they’re aiming to achieve.
Buoyed with this new focus, Martha feels beer equipped to shi her pracce
examples in therapy to make them more valuable and relevant for families on their
journey with KidsAbility.
“Knowing that Eritrean families come to me believing I’m the specialist who will ‘fix’
their child helps me to engage differently with them,” shares Martha. “And when
language barriers are removed, it is easier for families to understand and appreciate
their shared responsibilies as part of the therapy for their child. I now see that parents
understand even the smallest steps their child makes, with everyone valuing and
celebrang the outcomes together.”
Diversity is a pathway to strength and equity, so we acvely seek it out in all aspects of
our work. Thanks to financial support from our generous community, over 282 families
benefied from Interpreter Services with the most requested language being Arabic.
A year to celebrate.

KidsAbility is stronger
thanks to the community
support we receive.
Every holiday season since 2006, Charloe Cromarty dons her apron, readies her
to-do list to host dinner for over 80 friends and fellow congregants at her Heidelberg
home she shares with her husband, Bill, and sets an unwavering goal to raise funds
by cooking for the cause and the kids that she loves. To date, she esmates she’s served
530 pounds of turkey, 225 pounds of ham, 45 giant bags of potatoes, and far too many
pies, cookies, squares and tarts to count.
When it wasn't possible for Charloe to invite guests this past December, she penned a
leer to encourage them to make an in-lieu donaon. They responded wholeheartedly.
Over the last 16 years, Charloe and her guests have contributed over $38,000 –
inspired by a child or grandchild who have received services or delighted by seeing
their previous donaons make the greatest impact.
“My dinner guests see their gifts put into
action to help children. They continue
to give because they want that
care to continue.”

What does community philanthropy look like when you’re a leading global
manufacturing company with over 1,200 local employees in your workforce?
For ATS Automaon, giving back is founded in where they live, work and play and
extends beyond the organizaon’s financial generosity to KidsAbility.
Rooted in their belief to build sustainable communies and create environments
where diversity and inclusion are valued, team members of ATS collaborated with
our therapists to engineer hands-on pediatric therapy equipment to encourage
motor movement and muscle memory. Team members lent their soware
programming experse towards improving our communicaon devices so that our
therapists can beer support children with their communicaon needs.
And they’ve donated baery-powered specialty cars to our Go Baby Go program for
toddlers with limited mobility to assist with outdoor movement, socializing and
confidence building.

To solve complex
problems, we identify,
welcome and embrace
innovative solutions.
Pressures on pediatric therapy at
KidsAbility have never been higher. In
response, we recognize new approaches
are required to best meet the growing
needs of our community.
Celebrating
innovation.
At KidsAbility, we believe every problem is an unrealized opportunity in disguise,
and we seek to help our teams idenfy such opportunies.
Thanks to the support of donor-funded resources, we launched our Innovaon
Hub—a virtual space that brings together staff as creators, and includes innovators,
community leaders and academics to advance creave ideas and soluons for
enhanced family-centred client care.
Under this iniave, the Bright Ideas program invites staff to idenfy a problem and
explore soluons. They receive a variety of supports, training and professional
development opportunies to develop their research, collaborate with peers and
other community experts and connect in an environment of learning.
By building partnerships with academic instuons and recognizing the strengths of
student-led lab research, we aim to produce measurable outcomes from this work
to provide improved quality of care to our families and improve access to care to
reduce wait mes in our community.
Celebrating your impact.
Thank you for the trust you place in KidsAbility Foundaon with your donaons to support
the mission and principles of KidsAbility. These funds are invested in life-changing pediatric
therapy and services, innovave programs, the latest technology and to support areas to
meet the greatest needs in our community.
