Asantehene
commends
President
Akufo-Addo
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei
Tutu II, has commended
President Akufo-Addo for his
consistent show of attention to
Asanteman, thereby situating the
region to a position of prominence
and honour in terms of development
in the country.
According to the King of the
Asante Kingdom, he has followed
with keen interest the tenure of
President Akufo-Addo since 2017,
stressing that “issues of key concern
to the development of Asanteman
have been placed on the front burner
of government’s development
agenda.”
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II made this
known when the President paid a
courtesy call on him at the Manhyia
Palace, at the commencement of his
4-day working visit to the Ashanti
Region.
“On the occasion of your visit
four-day visit here, which has
become a regular feature, I am happy
you are here to commission and
inspect the projects undertaken by
your government for all to see that,
indeed, under you, Asanteman has
benefited, he said.
President Akufo-Addo, on his
part, said the visit to the Ashanti
region was part of his yearly routine
to visit all the regions across the
country to acquaint for himself and
deliver first-hand, the development
needs of the people.
President Akufo-Addo indicated
that, “nearly 350 kilometers of
Asphaltic Road network have been
done in the Ashanti region. This is
irrespective of the 100 kilometres
being done in the Kumasi Metropolis
and the other 100 kilometres being
done with regards to urban roads. 32
separate hospital projects have been
done in my time in the Ashanti
region.”

UN expert calls for end of attacks
on persons with albinism
AUnited Nations (UN) expert
has called for urgent action to
combat attacks against
persons with albinism including
murders and mutilations, which are
spiking in Madagascar as dangerous
myths and poverty persist. Babies and
children remain prime targets among
a doubling of attacks this year.
“False beliefs, myths and
superstitions that the eyes of people
with albinism can bring good luck
and wealth have triggered attacks
mostly targeting children in the south
of the country, where poverty is rife,”
said the Independent Expert on
Albinism, Muluka-Anne Miti-
Drummond.
“People with albinism, in the most
remote areas in this region, live in
perpetual fear and have resorted to
taking their children and leaving them
in local police and gendarmerie
stations for protection.”
The Government should launch
nationwide campaigns to educate and
raise awareness to tackle false beliefs,
myths, superstitions and ignorance
about albinism.
Between 2020 and 2022, police
and the gendarmerie reported around
45 cases that include abductions,
mutilations, and murders. Attacks in
2022 have doubled compared to
2021, with four attacks recorded in
one month. Victims have included a
nine-month-old baby.
“Another attack was reported to
me just a few days ago, underscoring
the need for immediate, robust
protection for people with albinism,
particularly in remote regions, where
poverty is rife,” Miti-Drummond said
in a statement after a recent 10-day
official visit to the country.
The expert visited impoverished
communities in Fort Dauphin,
Ambovombe and Amoboasary. She
said the south has been worst-hit by
climate change and has suffered from
droughts, cyclones, severe food
shortage and insecurity caused by
dahalos, or cattle thieves.
“COVID-19 has further
compounded poverty and this has
given fertile ground for dangerous
myths to spread and manifest in
attacks and other harmful practices in
the vain hope of obtaining wealth,”
Miti-Drummond said. “Attacks are
also said to increase before elections,
Man with albinism (Photo - Kelisa Bernard on Unsplash)
and I urge vigilance in light of the
pending elections next year.”
The expert was also concerned
about the low level of convictions. “I
am aware of only two convictions in
the cases that I received and none for
the most egregious crimes such as
mutilations and murders.
“Perpetrators must be brought to
justice to avoid perceptions of
impunity that can lead to mob
justice.”
Many people with albinism are
prevented from obtaining gainful
employment and accessing adequate
education due to stigma and
discrimination. Accessing sunscreen
as a life-saving product is also too
expensive for many.
The expert commended the
creation of a high-level technical
committee on albinism which aims to
develop a national action plan. A
countrywide study and analysis of
people with albinism is also planned.
Miti-Drummond will submit a
comprehensive report on her visit to
the Human Rights Council in March
2023.
Sierra Leone moves against cervical
cancer with HPV vaccine
Page3
In a move to protect adolescent girls
from cervical cancer, the Government
of Sierra Leone has introduced the
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine
to the routine immunisation schedule and
launched the start of a campaign to reach
153,991 girls with the vaccine. The
introduction of HPV vaccine is one of the
key strategies that the Government is
implementing toward cervical cancer
elimination in the country.
The Ministry of Health and Sanitation
(MoHS) – with support from Gavi, the
Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), the United
Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and
World Health Organization (WHO) – will
administer HPV vaccines nationwide
through schools, targeting 153,991 10-
year-old girls, who will each receive two
doses over a six-month period.
Despite the HPV vaccine providing a
proven and safe tool to protect women
and girls against HPV and the risk of
cervical cancer, global coverage rates
among 15-year-old girls remain low at 15
percent with two doses on average. Latest
global immunisation coverage data
shows that just 12% of girls globally are
receiving the crucial vaccine with
immunisation campaigns particularly
disrupted by lockdowns and school
closures.
“The Government of Sierra Leone
wholeheartedly welcomes the
introduction of the HPV vaccination
drive and urges all to support girls ten
years of age to be vaccinated and thus
preventing them from cervical cancer and
its consequences during the course of
their entire lives”, said Dr Austin Demby,
Minister of Health and Sanitation.
Globally, cervical cancer is the fourth
Jailed for abusing dog
and sharing extreme
content online
Aman who abused an animal and
tried to arrange the abuse of
children has been jailed
following an operation by the
Metropolitan Police’s Online Child
Sexual Abuse & Exploitation Command.
Manchester-based 34-year-old
Douglas Moore was jailed for five years
at Manchester Minshull Street Crown
Court - having been convicted of a total
of 24 counts including the following
offences:
- Intercourse with an animal
- Causing unnecessary suffering to a
protected animal
- Possession of an extreme
pornographic image / images portraying
an act of intercourse / oral sex with a dead
/ alive animal
- Intentionally encouraging or
assisting the commission of an offence of
intercourse with an animal
- Making indecent photograph /
pseudo-photograph of a child
- Attempting to arrange the
commission of a child sex offence
- Publishing an obscene online article
- Possession of a controlled drug of
Class B - Cannabis / Cannabis resin
He will be on the sex offenders
register for life upon his release. He is
also banned from owning animals.
Met officers were investigating a
separate matter when they discovered a
video of a dog being subjected to
physical and sexual abuse. Enquiries
identified the person in the video as
Moore.
The content of the video was so
Douglas Moore
distressing that senior officers in the Met
were contacted and a warrant was sought
to rescue the animal and arrest Moore.
On 8 November 2021, police attended
his home address in Stockport and
arrested him on suspicion of bestiality,
possession of extreme pornography and
causing unnecessary suffering to an
animal.
The dog was found and was removed
from the address. A quantity of cannabis
was also found.
Moore was taken into custody and a
number of devices, including his mobile
phone and computer, were seized for
specialist examination.
Evidence found on the devices proved
Moore had been abusing the dog over an
extended period of time and had been
using the dark web to view further
extreme content of animals and humans.
Officers discovered he had sought out
opportunities to swap and share material
with others and had discussed meeting
others to abuse dogs and children. No
evidence was found that these attempted
meetings had come to fruition.
Officers found Moore had gone to
great lengths to clear chat logs and
website histories in an attempt to hide his
offending.
PC Pete Howes, from the Online
Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation
Command, said: “Upon discovery of the
original video we took immediate and
decisive action to identify Moore and
save the dog. I am happy to say the dog is
now safe and well and being cared for.
“The scale of evidence compiled
meant Moore was left with no option but
to plead guilty. I’m pleased he is now in
jail where he belongs. It is no
exaggeration to say that this investigation
may well have spared more animals, and
humans, from coming to incredibly
serious harm.”
This work can impact on those
officers and staff who have to view and
process the most appalling material. The
Met takes the welfare of these officers
seriously and provides regular
counselling and support to investigators.
When you think you need A&E,
contact NHS 111 online first
The NHS is encouraging the public to use NHS
111 online to get urgent medical advice
quickly – in addition to existing services –
ahead of what England’s top doctor has said will
be a ‘winter like no other.’
With more people predicted to suffer from flu
this year and hospitals already treating an
increased number of COVID-19 patients, NHS 111
online offers an alternative way to get immediate
medical advice.
Data from September showed that the NHS
was already experiencing record demand for
emergency services, with ambulances responding
to 76,000 life-threatening incidents and call
handlers taking more than one million 999 calls.
The NHS 111 phone service also saw record
demand, with a call being taken every seven seconds.
It’s recommended that if you have an urgent
but not life-threatening medical need, you should
visit NHS 111 online first rather than going
straight to A&E. You can access the service by
visiting the website 111.nhs.uk.
People use the online 111 service for a range
of reasons, including to check their symptoms and
if an injury or illness requires further investigation,
to get information on mental health support
services available, or to seek advice on how to take
a medication.
The service is also able to arrange for you to
be seen at an Urgent Treatment Centre, GP
surgery, pharmacy, emergency dental services
or A&E should you need it.
If you or your loved one have a life-threatening
illness or injury then you should always use 999.
Just think 111 first.
When you think you need A&E,
go to NHS 111 online 111.nhs.uk
or call 111.

OCTOBER 19 - NOVEMBER 1 2022
TheTrumpet
Sierra Leone moves against cervical
cancer with HPV vaccine
Continued from Page 3<
most common cancer among women
with an estimated 266,000 deaths and
528,000 new cases each year. Around 85
percent of the global burden of cervical
cancer occurs in lower income countries.
According to the Sierra Leone Cancer
registry, cervical cancer is the second
most common, and number one killer, of
all cancers among women aged between
14 and 44 years old - and in 2021,
approximately 504 new cases of this
deadly cancer were diagnosed.
“Today’s launch should be celebrated
as a first step towards protecting girls in
Sierra Leone from cervical cancer and
providing them with a better chance of
living longer, healthier lives and reaching
their full potential,” said Thabani
Maphosa, the Managing Director of
Country Programmes at Gavi, the
Vaccine Alliance. “Historically, HPV
coverage worldwide, but especially in
lower-income countries where the cancer
burden is highest, was already too low.
The pandemic and school closures have
taken a further toll. Supporting countries
to catch up and improve HPV coverage
is a critical priority Gavi moving forward
and will require action on the demandand
supply-side. We look forward to
working with our partners towards this
goal.”
The introduction of the HPV vaccine
in Sierra Leone comes after several
months of thorough planning led by the
Ministry of Health and Sanitation’s
National Immunisation Programme. In
2014, a Gavi-supported HPV vaccine
pilot project was undertaken in Bo
District.
This pilot demonstrated the country’s
ability and readiness to implement a
school-based vaccination programme
nationwide. However, due to the Ebola
Virus Disease and COVID-19 outbreaks,
the MoHS had to postpone the
introduction of the nationwide vaccine.
“The introduction of the HPV vaccine
is a welcome demonstration of the
collaborative efforts in Sierra Leone to
support the good health of every child.
Good health is a basic human right,
which every child in Sierra Leone should
enjoy, regardless of where they are in the
country,” said UNICEF
Representative, Dr. Suleiman Braimoh.
More than 55 percent of the 194
WHO Member States have introduced
HPV vaccination, however in West and
Central Africa the HPV vaccine has been
introduced in only eight countries. With
the launch, Sierra Leone joins the group
of regional pacesetters introducing the
HPV vaccine into routine immunisation
programs as a key strategy to prevent
mortality and morbidity due to cervical
cancer.
“We are in the era where no one
HPV Vaccine launch in Sierra Leone - (Photo - Saffea Gborie, WHO)
Dr Austin Demby, Sierra Leone's Minister of Health and Sanitation
should suffer or die from diseases that are
preventable with the use of vaccines.
And, as we make these lifesaving
services accessible to safeguard the
health of women and girls, we are also
contributing to empowering the
individual, the community, as well as
enhancing sustainable social and
economic development of the nation”,
says Dr Steven Velabo Shongwe, WHO
Representative in Sierra Leone. “We urge
authorities and parents to ensure that their
girls are protected against the distress of
cervical cancer by protecting them
against HPV at an early age”.
“Cervical cancer is the second most
frequent cancer among women in Sierra
Leone. The introduction of the HPV
vaccine is a momentous milestone in
protecting the health of girls and reducing
their risk of future illness. This campaign
also provides an important opportunity to
expand education and outreach to
promote uptake of cervical cancer
Page7
screening and treatment services by older
women. Alongside HPV vaccine rollout,
these services are essential to eliminating
one of the most preventable cancers,”
said Nadia Rasheed, UNFPA
Representative.
To ensure the effective introduction of
the vaccine, Gavi is supporting the
procurement and installation of 463 sets
of solar refrigerators to help strengthen
cold chain systems and ensure that
vaccines stay at optimal temperatures
during shipping, storage, and delivery to
vaccination points. In addition, 1,500
healthcare workers have been trained to
administer this lifesaving vaccine.
Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance has
worked with the MoHS and the
government of Sierra Leone since 2001
to extend equitable access to
immunisation services to every child.
This support, amounting to US$101
School children participating in the HPV Vaccine launch - (Photo - Saffea Gborie, WHO)
million to date, has included the
procurement of vaccine doses and cold
chain equipment, including for COVID-
19, as well as investments in health
systems and technical assistance to
support routine immunisation, new
vaccine introductions and supplementary
campaigns.
Through the leadership of the MoHS,
intensive sensitization is ongoing at a
community level to help raise public
awareness about the HPV vaccine and
uptake – focusing on the targeted age
group of girls, community members and
leaders, so they are empowered and
informed about the tools available to
prevent cervical cancer. With support
from partners, a wide range of materials
have also been developed to inform and
respond to the questions which girls,
parents, and caregivers might have about
this new vaccine.

New album out now on Glitterbeat Records
Yanna Momina’s ‘Afar Ways’
was recorded live in a stilthut
on the horn of Africa
when Grammy-winning producer
and author, Ian Brennan (Tinariwen,
Zomba Prison Project, Ustad Saami)
visited Djibouti in the spring of
2018.
The album is beautifully focused
around Momina’s resonant vocals
and the sparest of musical backings
(acoustic guitar, handclaps,
calabash).
It is the 10th release in
Glitterbeat’s acclaimed “Hidden
Musics” series.
Music is not something the rural
Afar people “do for show,” Momina
asserted. Since most have no
television, it is done for their own
amusement at night. Every night.
As Yanna Momina and Brennan
recorded, the tide came in and they
ended-up surrounded by water.
Throughout the album, the thatch hut
audibly creaks and rocks in the
waves.
Yanna Momina - Afar Ways
music. On the spot she brainstormed
a septuagenarian rap for the ages,
riding an imaginary bass-line for
over ten minutes that could be felt,
though not heard.
Then, after a manic burst of tunes,
Momina asked her band to set down
their instruments and undertook an a
cappella rendition of “My Family
Won’t Let Me Marry the Man I Love
(I Am Forced to Wed My Uncle),” a
song that even the friends gathered
Born in 1948, Yanna was
discovered while accompanied on a
two-string shingle played with nails
and a matchbox for maracas. She
made a name in the region not just
for her thrilling vibrato, but for being
the rare Afar woman who writes her
own songs.
Brennan states, “Yanna has one of
the most unique voices I’ve ever
heard. She flirts with the edge of
chaos without losing control of her
idiosyncratic phrasing.”
“We set-up to record in a stilthut”
he adds as he describes the
atmosphere of the recording session.
“Moving at the speed of another
culture, what first sounded like a call
to prayer, was only conversation.
And then we began. Momina was
accompanied by a rotating cast of
friends who passed around guitars
and a calabash. They freely offered
up handclaps and background
vocals...in service of the artist they
addressed honorifically as ‘aunt.’”
As an experiment, Brennan asked
Momina to try speaking over some
staunch member of the Elephant and
Castle Parish of the Celestial
Church of Christ in London.
Mother Celestial Esther Ayinke Alaba Soremekun
The Beginning
Esther Ayinke Fehintola Alaba
Mann was born on Monday the 4 th
of February 1918 in Lagos, Nigeria.
Her father, Pa James Omotoso
Mann originated from the wellknown
Sopehin family of Itesi, Ake
in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Papa
Mann worked for Nigerian Railway
in Lagos and retired to Port
Harcourt where he transitioned to
glory. Her mother was Madam
Elizabeth Egeyemi Olakunbi Davies
from the Oniru Royal Dynasty of
Lagos Island that produced the
Oyekan ruling family.
Among Mama’s siblings were
Papa Nathaniel Olayinka Mann,
Madam Alake Shogbamimu, and
Madam Josephine Ibijoke Adigun
who are now of blessed memory
and a junior sister - Madam Agnes
Titilola Crowder.
Educational Background
When Mama was 7 years old, she
started her educational journey from
CMS Girls’ Primary School in
Kaduna while living with one of her
aunts - Mama Matilda Idowu Mann.
She progressed with her Secondary
education in Zaria in 1926, moved
to Port Harcourt in 1930 and later
returned to Lagos in 1933.
She also attended Baptist
Academy on Broad Street where the
popular Western Nigeria politician
of the National Convention of
Nigerian Citizens [NCNC] - Papa
Samuel Ladoke Akintola of blessed
memory was one of her teachers. It
was at this tender age that she
devoted her life to serving God.
Mama became and worked as a
teacher for about six months before
embarking on a career in the fashion
industry.
sweetheart and bosom friend – Late
Mr. Afolabi Adekunle Soremekun in
1944. At that time, he worked for
Elder Dempster Shipping Line as a
Clerk while Mama carried on as a
prosperous trader and entrepreneur.
After marriage, Mama persuaded
Papa Soremekun to quit the rat race
of salary earning and both of them
went into various business ventures,
which included exporting timber
overseas.
She established a company
named MATOBS STORES, and
Papa Soremekun became the Co-
Managing Director. Mama and
Papa led a successful import and
export trade (which included timber
logs, leather and commodities) with
foreign companies in various
countries, which made them travel
most of the time across the Middle
East and Western Europe to broaden
their business.
Business Enterprise
Mama entered the fashion
industry as a Sewing Mistress; she
had a shop at Tokunbo Street near
the famous Mercy Hospital in Lagos
Island where she trained young
women how to sew. Mama
established a company that dealt in
ladies hats and supplied many
traders across all parts of Nigeria.
Mama enjoyed being a
businesswoman for many years and
used her spare time sewing clothes
when she retired.
Mama gave a testimony of how
God saved her from a disastrous
ferry accident during her importer
and exporter days. This occurred on
her way back to Lagos Island on the
‘Owo lowo’ ferry crossing from
Ikorodu riverside where logs were
prepared for exporting. Many lives
were lost when the ferry capsized
but God gave Mama a second
chance and reason to continue to
praise Him.
Religious Life
Mama Soremekun was born into
a Christian family. She was baptised
and confirmed in a Methodist
Church in Ikoyi, Lagos. She was
named ‘Esther’ after the Biblical
Queen Esther. Mama and Papa went
on a Holy Pilgrimage to Jerusalem,
Israel that included a tour of Egypt
in 1961.
On the 17 th of July 1984, Papa
transitioned to glory and Mama
became a widow like Anna a
Prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel
of the tribe of Aser (Luke 2:36-38).
This became a key turning point in
her life and she started her journey
within the Celestial Church of
Christ (CCC). In September 1984,
Elder Olayinka Odunlami (now
Superior Evangelist) directed Mama
to Elephant and Castle Parish.
Journey within the Celestial
Church
After joining CCC Elephant and
Castle Parish, Mama Soremekun
rose to the rank of Mother Celestial.
She celebrated her 70 th , 80 th , 90 th ,
99 th and 100 th Birthdays in the parish
surrounded by friends and family
from far and near.
More important than any rank is
the wisdom that Mama used to
guide and counsel countless
members and non-members of the
church. She became the Grand
Matron of Elephant and Castle
Choir on the 22 nd of March 2009 and
the Grand Matron of the same parish
(alongside the Grand Patron,
Mother Celestial Esther Ayinke Alaba Soremekun
A younger Mother Celestial Esther Ayinke Alaba Soremekun at 26 years old
Superior Evangelist Job MBE) on
the 26 th of May 2013.
During her 90 th birthday
celebration, CCC Elephant and
Castle Parish hosted the present
Pastor and Spiritual Head of CCC
Worldwide - Reverend Pastor
E.M.F. Oshoffa who officiated
during the landmark celebration.
Character and Hobbies
Mama had a character of being
straight forward and exuded
truthfulness in a loving way - no
matter the consequences.
Right from her youth, her
favourite foods included: rice, yam,
egg, salad, but she disliked Eba
(Cassava pudding).
Mama’s favourite pastimes and
hobbies included: Gospel, religious
music and Wordsearch puzzles.
In Mama’s Words
During her 100 th birthday
anniversary in 2018, Mama said:
“I have been asked to say few
words to commemorate ‘celebration
of my life’. It is with so much joy
that I am thanking God Almighty,
for bringing me through the valleys
and hills of life to celebrate my 100 th
Birthday. My prayer is that God
Almighty, in His Infinite mercy will
look on every one of us and grant us
His Blessings. Amen.
When I look back on my life and
now look around me every day, I am
so grateful that God has clothed me
with wonderful people. He has fed
and watered me through the blessed
love and support of my family,
friends and the Celestial Church of
Christ.
God’s blessing will always be on
all of you, and I leave you with the
words of Psalm 145, one of my
favourites!”
