President’s Report

18-year-old Bianca’s decision to move from Canberra’s southside all the way to Daley Road was inspired by a

dream. The dream of living within walking distance of Civic. Of escaping the Canberra bubble by defying all

odds and actually staying in Canberra. Of being on time to class. Of being more than just a townie, or, worse

– a Griffin member. Having made this ambitious decision, the next question was where to go. Johns?

Definitely not. Ursies? I think I’d rather just stay home. Burgmann was seriously on the cards until my tour

on Open Day in 2019, when I decided I would never last even a single night in one of those rooms.

Everything Bruce Hall promised was just too attractive to turn down: Daley Road’s highest average GPA;

ANU’s oldest and most deeply entrenched on-campus culture; 21 glorious meals a week; and, above all, the

prospect of accidentally triggering a “when I was at Bruce” from my father whenever I divulge a shred of

information about my life.

And so, circumstance forced my hand. By God I’m glad it did, because my four-and-a-bit total semesters

living in this building have been the best of my life. I’ve loved my time at Bruce. I even loved my time away

from Bruce because life is just better when you’re a Brucie. I love meals in the dining hall. I love wearing

my merch to sports, whether I’m playing or spectating. I love that even after three years, I still meet new

people. I love the hall-wide inside jokes. I love going to PJs on Thursdays. I love getting nothing done in a

study room because of a pathological need to talk to everyone who walks past. I love formal dinners and

high tables. I love the friends I’ve made and the friends I’ll continue to make because I’ve seen how the

bond between Brucies continues beyond our time on campus. I love that ex ressies stay involved. I love live

feeds, Bruce Hall Banter, Buttery Nights, the artworks on the walls, taking photos on the roof, “foyer in 10?”,

“Bruce Hall Best Hall”s, Horses, 1-2-3 squeezes, reading a new Billiten, wellbeing pancakes, sitting in the

Butt for two hours straight, watching sports in the JCR, doing it for Bill, and all the other daily joys we as

Bruce ressies are so privileged to experience.

It was incredibly daunting taking on the role of President in 2022. The responsibility of restoring ANU’s

oldest residential culture after years of moving buildings and COVID restrictions weighed heavy, especially

given I’d only experienced pre-COVID Bruce for six short weeks in my first year. Spurred on by the tales of

my dad’s Bruce Hall golden days and ex ressies’ stories of fabled events like Oktoberfest and non-O Week

buttery nights, the CRC and I did it. Well, really – we all did it. You included. We brought back the old events

and created new ones. Every Brucie played a role in the massive success that was 2022. I really and truly

believe Bruce’s culture and traditions make it the best place to be on campus.

My college experience may not have been what I expected when I enrolled in 2019, and in many ways, it was

a lot harder. But through it all, there’s nowhere I would have wanted to spend my college years more than at

162 Daley Road.

I love Bruce Hall and I always will. Thanks for the memories and stories to last a lifetime. I can’t wait to raise

my kids on these tales just like my dad did, and maybe one day they too will be lucky enough to know what it

means to be a Brucie. I know it’s something I’ll never forget.

Love you all. Thank you.

BHBH x

Vice-President’s Report

I’ve had a wonderful time this year being Bruce’s VP. Within the CRC, we’ve had great fun brainstorming

and organising events and activities for residents in our post-lockdown and (almost) post-COVID world.

Although it involved substantial hours and hard work, both O-Week and Bush Week were successful, with

plenty of events catering for all different Brucies. Seeing ressies’ making friendships and forming bonds with

each other and the Hall has been such a highlight. The appreciation that the community has for the CRC

has, I think, really energised us as a team and enabled us to continue to relentlessly working towards our

goals and plans throughout the year.

Within my role particularly, I’ve really enjoyed working with the advocates to increase their visibility within

the Hall’s leadership team, and towards the Bruce community, who through various events have been able to

appreciate and enjoy all the hard work the advocates have done this year.

A really prominent part of my year has been designing and reorganising Bruce Hall’s merch – this aspect isn’t

typically a huge part of the VP role, as it normally just involves reordering previously- established items and

designs. However, this year became an anomaly as funnily enough, the economic shocks of COVID, which

led to high inflation and broken supply chains, caused many of our older merch to be too expensive and

unrealistic to continue. Because of this, I was tasked with finding new suppliers and making new designs in

collaboration with the Media and Design Coordinators. Despite these initial setbacks, we have ultimately

had fantastic success with Bruce’s merch ‘collection’, with new caps and sports singlets being introduced.

Although, the knockout hit with the Bruce population was definitely the new fleeces – within 10 minutes

of my Facebook announcement there was already a queue at reception, and the majority of the stock was

sold within the week. It was really lovely to see around the Hall, and even around campus generally, wearing

their fleeces. We all became united by the navy blue! As well as that, the production of new rugby jerseys was

something I was particularly proud of, and I hope can be used amongst Bruce sports teams for many years

to come. Credit must also go to the rest of the CRC for providing feedback on designs and supporting the

merch crusade I’ve been on this year.

Ultimately, as I write this report, I’m feeling so grateful to have been a part of and working with an amazing

CRC and leadership team this year in 2022, and I cannot wait to see how the Hall continues to grow and

improve in the coming years, and into the far future. Bruce Hall is a community of amazing individuals, and

its spirit has a life of its own, connecting us all now and always – after all, once a Brucie, always a Brucie. I’ve

learnt so much, and I’m so thankful to have spent time helping lead the Best Hall at ANU (and everywhere,

probably); I’ll forever cherish my time as your Vice-President.

Lots of love,

Miranda Stewart

Well, what a year 2022 has been for the CRC...

It all started with our jam-packed Better-in-StereO Week (for those still asking, no, this is not a take on the

Liv & Maddie theme song, it means we are better when we are together). It got off to a roaring start with

some of our favourite Bruce O-Week traditions like speed dating and pod chalk which introduced all our

new ressies to each other. During the busiest move in days we also had the CRC set up out the front, taking

shifts selling our o week packs and taking the new ressies up to their rooms. A new addition to O-Week,

we loved getting to know all the wonderful first years in a different way at the outset of their time at Bruce.

Though O-Week ended with an upsetting hall-wide outbreak of covid with only a few escaping it’s spread

this did not stop us from continuing to be the best hall on campus. Brucies volunteered and came together to

deliver meals to our isolating ressies with treats being delivered to them during their iso time.

Before we knew it, Bruce was back and better than ever. We smashed BnG in the inaugural Ashes Cricket

tournament and were robbed of a win in the Debating Grand Final. The year continued with many

anticipated events coming together, like our Tropical Butt Night, Drag Night, and Winter Formal.

This year’s success is 100% attributable to the hard work and dedication of the CRC. Whether this be Zach’s

tireless efforts during Murder Week, Otty and Owen’s form writing, Ally and Issy’s hours spent editing

photos, Eve, Michael and Ash’s time spent at beloved IAC meetings, Pippa, Toddy, Lara and Ed’s constant

dedication to lift Bruce spirit around sport or Zoe’s fight to maintain an international scene in a post-covid

res hall, each and every one of our CRC members has made this year exactly what it turned out to be.

A special shoutout must also go to our wonderful exec. Lauren has budgeted our year incredibly well and

tracked down (nearly) every single receipt, with the only downfall being Bruce Residents’ inability to share

vacuums. Miranda has finessed her way through supply chain issues to bring us new and improved Bruce

Merch which all started from scratch, with the CRC drive proving nothing but useless for her. Last but not

least, Bianca has weathered every storm on behalf of Bruce whilst also being the Pres of all ANU Pres’

#girlboss.

Whilst there were some undeniable lows this year, we have loved every minute of serving the Bruce

community and doing what we can to make your time here as special as it has been and continues to be for

us. We know there are things to improve on, but we have total faith in Pippa, Scotty, Ash, Benji, and the rest

of the 2023 CRC to continue the wonderful culture of Bruce Hall into the years to come.

Bruce Hall Best Hall!!

With love,

Camilla xoxo

Social Convenors Report

After a year riddled with lockdown and COVID in 2021, we headed into 2022 with full steam ahead.

We began the year with a ‘Better in StereO-week’, where we hosted a plethora of events, including

Bruce Moose, Hopscotch pizza and drinks, and Order of Bruce. Freshers tried to get to as many

events as possible before they were crippled by the inevitable ‘Fresher’s Flu’, which resulted in the

largest Messina Walkout that Bruce had ever seen! Everything seemed to be going so well until

someone decided to get COVID on the Bot Moose dancefloor. In those grim times, however, our

morale was saved by the newest addition to the social rep team, Zach! Filled with fresher enthusiasm

and ideas, he was an awesome asset in Bruce’s greatest time of need.

With Zach joining the team, we set on the impossible task of hosting a Butt Night for the first time in

the conceivable past. We picked our theme, we bought the decorations, we bought the food, and we

planned the cupcakes. All we needed was for no one to get COVID. And it was a SUCCESS. The stars

aligned, and Brucies got to experience their first-ever Butt night!!

We springboarded off the success of this event to plan an eventful Bush week for all Brucies, which

included an ‘Out of this World’ Butt Night, among other things. The highlight of the term for many

Brucies, however, was the Winter Formal, where everyone dressed up to enjoy our very own BNO

band and some delicious food and drink (some of us more than others).

Additionally, we were able to have a Bruce Hall Murder Week this semester due to Zach’s hard work.

Hearing the screams of your fellow brucies as they were chased down the corridors was very conducive

to effective study, and I’m sure we all had a blast.

In summary, it has been an awesome year so far. Thank you Brucies!

Owen Crofts, Otty Allen and Zach Biles, 2022 Social Conveners

Murder Week 2022

Winner: Vanessa Hamilton-Kane

First Kill: Ryan King Vs Felix Archibald, 12:01am Saturday 24th September

“Getting some munchies at the Butt, I let Felix Archibald know to join my girlfriend and I later in my room that night.

Idk what he was thinking, but he was awfully excited to see my girlfriend and I at night. The clock struck 12. Hannah

made a pretend visit to the five west bathroom and Felix was the only person squirted on that night.”

Best Kills

Jack Lester Vs Henry Canavan

“Let me set the scene, there are 6 individuals. Louisa, Imogen, Henry, Zara, the reaper, and I. After being given the

glorious gift of choosing my next victim, I decided to chose Imogen... who last round was a little less than quiet about

my whereabouts. I planned to create false texts between the reaper and I to fool Imogen into thinking I had Henry.

However, the reaper (who is amazing fyi for planning this, thank you) accidentally gave me Henry. Long story short,

midnight comes around. Louisa knows I have Henry but also knows that Imogen knows I have Henry. Henry thinks

I have Imogen and has seen texts to ‘prove it’. Imogen has also seen texts saying its Henry, so she thinks it’s him.

12:01AM. Imogen makes Patrick look away, while Louisa covers her eyes and I spray all over Henry’s legs. Yay.”

Lewis Dobbin Vs AB

“The story was one of betrayal. After strategising with a plea for a haircut and a trimming of the sides, my plan was

met with an elaborate counter move by AB, strategically doing my sides in the bathroom, and bringing a witness for

the cause. However, some careful chat from myself assured AB of my innocence, and I was in the clear. After a delicious

sausage role in the dining hall, I saw my target leave the safe zone. Zooming out the hall with stealth and speed,

I turned the corner to find AB cautiously waiting for the slow burden of a bruce hall elevator. I pounced. I apologised.

We hugged. And another bruce hall resident falls at the hands of trust.”

Daniel Rice Vs Johnny Hill

“As Jonny’s team ran into IB endpoint they were greeted by a mass of Brucies cheering them on in support and celebration

of their achievement - I was cheering because I knew Jonny was running to his death. After I congratulated

him on the run, Jonny told me that he had no water left. Of course I politely offered him some of my own - though I

forgot to mention it would only be 30 ml from my water gun. After leading Jonny to my “bag” in the bush I turned off

my head torch and shot him from behind. A classic murder in the dark.”

April Smerdon

“‘Twas the first day of Murder Week- already a scheme was at hand for the elimination of Lucca of 2 East. For hours

a siege was upon their door was laid and many plans were afoot. I was called upon to help him survive this treacherous

battlefield, however, bonds of friendship were broken by $5 worth of butt snacks and a compliment about the fit.

I supplied the assassin and his thugs with information about when I would assist in transporting Lucca to the dining

hall for lunch in order to launch a surprise attack. An arduous battle persisted as many were thrown to the floor

amidst the chase. In the end- Lucca had fallen and my betrayal was still unknown.

Come Sunday and I had heard naught of my own killer. Suspicious as ever, I would not be as foolish as to trust my

own friends in the case of revenge. Calmly I came to collect Lucca to escort me to dinner, still unnerved as ever.

Nothing out of the ordinary occurred until preparing to leave. Zachary Bell of 2 Central, a co-conspirator to Lucca’s

demise, pulled me aside and whispered ‘Do you know who your true friends really are?’ Immediately I knew what

this meant. Lucca was going to betray me. Whilst walking back to my room with Lucca, I was on edge, whipping my

head around checking for murderers and liars. As we neared my humble abode, the betrayal was revealed: my killer!

Chasing me down the halls! While shots were fired and safety debated, one lonely witness, Lilliana, my ever faithful

pod-mate, saw everything. I was safe for the night, however I was left with the knowledge that Murder Week would

not just be killing people, but friendships too.”

Sports Report

2022 saw a year filled with memories like no other. Term 1 began with a dominant display by the Mens*

Volleyball team, which saw them achieve the first premiership of the calendar year. Whilst spirits were high

to start the year that was the only success we saw in the first term. The most anticipated event of the year,

‘ISO Lawn Bowls’, unfortunately did not go ahead due to the common culprit of COVID-19, although this

saw more spotlight on the other ISO sports seeing Bruce place mid-table in Touch and Ultimate Disc. The

main part of sport in Term 1 was all about the connections made between freshers and returners which was

super wholesome.

Term 2 rolled around the corner, and so did a term full of achievements for Bruce. Mens* Hockey achieved

the highly antiquated 3-peat with an undefeated season. This was highlighted by Owen Crofts making the

opposition seem like training cones as he put on clinic after clinic. Mens* Basketball came narrowly close to

another premiership going down to Johns in the final. However, one of the games of the whole competition

saw Harry Arnold hitting a game-winning 3 pointer against UniLodge, which is definitely worth noting. Our

AFL 9’s team played with spirit and heart which was followed by a full hall turnout at their game against

Wright. Although they may have lost the game they won our hearts. Notable mentions for this term: D’Arcy

Todd (me) scoring a full field try in a 7s game (I am so good), our Womens* Basketball team winning a nail

biter in their final game of the year and Charlie Rolfe sending our Mens* Basketball team into the final with a

game winning shot. Happiness.

Term 3 was one to remember. Netball games were being played left, right and centre. We imported a South

Australian to help us get over the line against Wright. Yet again showing our superiority over the inferior

college. Thanks Tiddies. Both our Football teams put in brilliant seasons with the Mens* narrowly coming

second best to Ursies whilst our Womens* team fought their way to 6th place. However, two stories stole the

show in Term 3. One was of a team of normal individuals but when put together and given a Table Tennis

racket they become something more. Our very own Womens* Table Tennis team headed by the formidable

duo of Lizzie and Sarah smashed their way into 3rd place creating history for Bruce Hall. But, it didn’t stop

there with the Mens* AFL team having an unbeaten season to inch their way to an AFL premiership beating

Johns by 4 points in a thriller. Good times.

Term 4 was hindered mostly by rain (sorry IB), although this didn’t lessen the highlights. Tennis and

Badminton both had successful seasons with Cricket also being a strong showing of fight and spirit. In the

end, Bruce had an amazing year which saw us finish 3rd overall in the ISO Shield. Thank you to the Media

Subcom for catching everyone’s good sides when ‘Doing it for Bill’, and a huge congratulations to everyone

who participated in any of the sports, whether that be coaching or playing. More importantly, thank you to

everyone who came to spectate any of the Bruce Hall games. Whether it was out on the field or in the stands,

everyone should be proud of the year as we had a sporting season to remember. Go Bruce!

Inward Bound 2022

After months of intense preparation, IB 2022 was, unfortunately, and ironically, postponed on October 6th

- the night before the race. The race directors urged runners to take it easy and to begin searching for a new

personality.

In a recent turn of events, a tentative date has been set for the weekend of 29th-30th October 2022, where the

mighty Bruce team is expected to finally win IB for the first time since 2004!

Media and Design Report

2022, like every year, was a big year for the media and design team, and the first after the merger of the

portfolio! We covered over 40 events with photography, kept the Instagram account running and made

posters, fliers and other graphics. We’re particularly happy with the update of the JCR photo wall to include

photos from 2021 ressies, and we hope this tradition can be upheld with the photos we took this year.

It was great to have so many returners involved in the subcommittee this year who could bring their

Advocacy at Bruce

99

The advocates have had a fantastic year in 2022, with a strong team of individuals who have come together in

Bruce’s leadership team to deliver amazing events, activities and experiences for residents’.

The amazing team consisted of 5 sections:

1. Gender and Sexuality Advocates (GSAs): Matthew Box, Maddy Sloan, Gracie Shabtay, Angus

Crozier, and Kailyn Smith and Kate Ledger.

2. Mental Health Advocates: Lauren Holloway, Ysobel O’Brien, and Lizzie Coper-Jones.

3. Cultural Advocates: Luca Ittimani and Gabrielle Metua.

4. Disability Advocate: Sophia Rees.

5. Alumni Officer: Lucy McAlpine.

We started the year with pillars, with advocates heavily assisting in their formulation and presentation. They

followed this by continuing to be an important presence in Bruce’s leadership team throughout the year.

Some examples of the fantastic events the team lead included:

- GSA autonomous events, both for Queer* and women-identifying people to connect in a secure and safe

space. Importantly, the GSAs worked extremely hard on the return of Bruce’s ‘Drag Night’, the first to be had

in many years. It was a great success, and the solid foundation the current advocates have set will

undoubtedly be a great starting point for the reinvigoration of this Bruce tradition in years to come.

- Wellbeing pancakes and brunches, which became a staple following many Bruce night activities, and as a

return to term. This was also supplemented with BBQs. Wellbeing walks also drew great support from

residents.

- Holi, which was a resounding success, with lots of fun to be had, many memories made and Bruce

traditions continued. The celebration of, and learning about, diversity at Bruce and amongst its individuals

continues to be highly valued by the community.

- Disabilities’ pot-plant decorating and bracelet-making, in collaboration with the CRC, were very successful

and drew great support from excited residents.

Amongst their own planning and organising, advocates also worked hard in their portfolios with SRs, each

producing a High Table where residents’ could to learn about different academic themes and topics relevant

to the various advocacy areas. It was a fantastic opportunity for the community to learn about advocates’

work and subjects they were passionate about, and felt would be beneficial to explore within the Hall.

Overall, these advocates worked diligently and harmoniously over this year, producing excellent outcomes

for Bruce and its residents, particularly through engaging the Hall on important matters that help the Hall

grow more diverse and inclusive. For this, I commend them all, and hope you will join me in this. They

are a fabulous, dedicated group of individuals, and it has been my pleasure to support and work with them

throughout 2022 as chair of the advocacy committee.

Thanks,

Miranda Stewart

Mental Health Report

This year the Mental Health Advocates have had an exciting year of running

events and promoting awareness in the Bruce community. From the beginning

of O-Week we loved getting to meet all the new Bruce ressies and began to

form connections with returning and new Brucies. During O-Week we were

able to welcome in a new year by running a couple of fun events. This included

the traditional mental health pancakes, morning meditation on the rooftop,

and participating in the preparation and presentation of pillars.

We were privileged to be able to facilitate activities in which friendships could

be fostered, as well as educating and bringing awareness to individuals’ mental

health. Throughout the year, we continued to run some of the residents favourite

events. We organized chill catch-ups with Brucies, like movie nights, coffee

walkouts, continued with a couple of BBQ’s and, of course, the beloved MH

pancakes. Some of our favourite events included the walk through the Botanical

Gardens in collaboration with the greens sub-com, where we grabbed some

coffee and enjoyed both the scenery and company. The Mental Health High

Table was also a highlight for the MH team and Bruce community, where we

welcomed Benjamin Legge, who spoke about his personal experiences with

mental health.

At Bruce Hall, we are in a very privileged position to have the opportunity

to hear from academics in this field and be around those who support mental

health advocacy in the community. We hope that we have played a role in

positively contributing to the conversation around mental health and created a

welcoming atmosphere for everyone at Bruce Hall this year.

We wish 2023’s mental health advocates luck for their year ahead.

Cultural Advocates

The Cultural portfolio team loved helping Brucies celebrate cultural diversity this year. The

community got right into events like Holi and the CRC’s Oktoberfest, keeping old Bruce tradition

alive and well. Mochi making, Chartwells cheesecake for Shavuot, egg-painting for Orthodox Easter

and cultural movie nights brought opportunities to have some fun while engaging in the diverse

cultures of the people that make up our hall. Collaborating with the International Representative,

we also had the Balinese Gamelan Ensemble perform at dinner one night, a memorable and striking

exposure to diverse experiences of celebration and music. To end the year, the Cultural High Table,

addressed by Professor Dean J Kotlowski, reminded us of the differences between and within the

‘Western’ cultures of Australia and the USA across the 1960s and the 2020s.

The team wasn’t just focused on events but also on raising awareness. Gabrielle’s Cultural Diversity

campaign promoted discussion of cultural differences and faced lift-using Brucies with some hard

facts. Creating the ‘Culture At Bruce’ Facebook page enabled the Advocates to promote significant

events and discuss their cultural meaning with the community. We’ve loved the dual celebration and

education roles and appreciate Brucies’ engagement this year.

Luca Ittimani, 2022 Cultural Advocate

What a year! After what felt like forever, we received more international students in our Bruce Hall

community!

Collaborating largely with the cultural advocate, cultural and international vibes at Bruce have been

at an all time high. We had several highlights, including the year of the tiger celebrations,

autonomous international mixer with Wright and autonomous coffee walkouts. These all provided

opportunities for international students to recognise each other, as well as participate in hall-wide

and inter-hall activities.

All the best for the new year!

Gender and Sexuality Advocates

In 2022, Bruce Hall’s advocacy continued to play a pivotal role in the community and culture of the

residence. GSA Advocates Maddy Sloan, Gracie Shabtay, Matthew Box, Angus Crozier, Kate Ledger and

Kailyn Smith ably directed the Gender & Sexuality portfolio alongside the Gender and Sexuality Senior

Residents. In O-Week, the portfolio led the annual Gender & Sexuality Pillar for all incoming first-years,

which provided new Brucies with a greater insight into topics, issues, and information surrounding Gender

& Sexuality at Bruce.

The advocates, along with the CRC, then hosted Mardi Gras 2022 in what was one of the most successful

O-Week events. Consisting of a ‘get ready with me’ in the Quad before heading to a Mardi Gras-themed

Bruce Moose, many first-years and returners alike had a great night with new friends in a fun and safe environment.

The portfolio also ran a ‘You Can’t Ask That’ event during O-Week, which allowed other Brucies

to anonymously ask questions, irrespective of their traditional taboo status, for the GSAs to answer.

Throughout the year, the portfolio also ran several events, such as movie-nights, queer* coffee walkouts,

and advocacy events for topical issues and significant days. The GSAs held the first High Table for the year

which was themed Women* of the 21st Century and ran near and in combination with other events for

International Women’s Day.

Sex Week ran at the start of Semester 2 and provided an opportunity for the advocates to communicate

positively about sex through another High Table, where the advocates spoke from their own experience and

a second ‘You Can’t Ask That’ panel for the year. Perhaps most notably, Bruce Hall Drag Night was held in

term 4 for the first time since 2015. Despite being a previously unseen event for the advocates, the night was

a success, with many Brucies enjoying karaoke, trivia, and dances in a wonderful night of drag.

Overall, 2022 was a successful year for the Gender & Sexuality advocates and the portfolio, and the current

advocates leave the portfolio in a well-established position within Bruce Hall.

We would like to thank the Bruce community for engaging with our events and are excited to see what next

year brings for the Gender and Sexuality portfolio.

Best wishes,

Angus Crozier, Maddy Sloan, Gracie Shabtay and Matthew Box, 2022 Gender and Sexuality Advocates

Disability Advocate

Working as the Disability Advocate for Bruce Hall this year has been an amazing experience! With

help from members of the Wellbeing Portfolio and the CRC I have been able to run fun events

throughout the year such as movie nights, pancakes in the quad, and pot planting! It’s been great to

see Brucies get around these events and engage in the community.

The highlight of this year was definitely the Disabilities High Table which, despite some hiccups like

a fire alarm and a speaker being unable to attend last minute, went really well. Our speaker Ceilidh

Dalton is a Canberra based environmental artist and curator who gave an amazing speech that shed

light on the High Tables topic ‘Am I Disabled Enough?’. They also discussed how accessibility – while

often overlooked – is a huge factor in normalising disability. It was great to see a diverse range of

Brucies attend and actively participate in the High Table through a question time ,as well as stick

around to continue the discussion afterwards!

As Disability Advocate I have also been working with leadership from other halls and the Disability

Students Association to advocate for better accessibility in ANU’s residential halls. It has been a super

rewarding experience to work with these groups and the wider disability community at ANU to

address issues and work towards long term solutions.

Overall has been an amazing year and I’m so thankful to everyone who helped me as disability

advocate! Good luck to next years advocate team, I’m super excited to see what you guys will do!

This year I have been lucky enough to be the SR for 1 East. In fact, as the first floor is the sole floor with only

one pod, I think we should be able to call ourselves the number 1. Pod. It has been incredibly rewarding to

see everyone, especially the first years’, grow closer and make friends and connections as the year has

progressed. Every single member of the pod has gained so much confidence, and in many ways I feel as

though the pod hasn’t needed much from me as they are all so independent and capable members of our

Bruce community.

I had decided that my pod theme for this year would be Kath and Kim, a favourite of mine and Aussie classic.

I hope I have been able to give members of my pod a taste of the essence of Fountain Lakes. The highlight of

the year for our pod came in the first term where we (nearly all) participated in a round of glow-in-the dark

minigolf. Despite the strangeness of the theme of the venue, it was a great night and we were all ‘glowing’

throughout.

It’s been such a pleasure to be an SR for this incredible pod, and I wish all of you amazing people the best of

luck in your future endeavours. I can’t wait to see all the incredible things you all do in the future.

Pod Reports

2 East

This year, 2 East’s theme was THE INCREDIBLES. Admittedly, I had chosen that theme before even meeting

any of my pod members and I don’t think it could’ve been a more fitting idea – my pod members were truly

Incredible this year! The theme was chosen out of my acute obsession with movies and genuine love for the

animated masterpiece that it is.

After a few frantic pod meetings between all the cricket I was playing, we managed to get a pod function up

and running early in semester one. Naturally, we decided on watching THE INCREDIBLES in common

room 2, which was accompanied with a variety of pizzas and Butt snacks alike. As I am writing this 2 East

is whipping up our second pod function which is likely to be the viewing of the second instalment of the

Incredibles. As a senior resident, it has been a pleasure to watch all the first years find their feet in the

somewhat chaotic environment of Bruce Hall and help the later years continue to make Bruce the amazing

place that it is and will become. I’m wishing all my podlings the very best in their future endeavours.

Pod Reports

133

What a year it’s been for Bruce Hall’s most down-to-earth central pod! Here’s the lowdown (alright, we get

it, floor two is close to the ground haha I swear the bad puns will stop here). In O-week, 2 Central banded

to assert dominance in pod wars. For proof of this, you only had to swing by the Central fire stairs to see

some truly terrifying awe-inspiring works of chalk ‘art’. Despite having the largest turnout at pod trivia, we

were pretty rubbish, showing that quantity truly does not equal quality. But who cares about knowing which

sports are being cut from the Olympics if the vibes are there, right?

Unfortunately, these positive vibes in O-week were quickly replaced by positive test results over the next

week or two...it took maybe 48 hours for the number of people in the pod with Covid to far outstrip the

number of people who knew what the pod theme – Poptropica – actually was (by which to say more than

three people tested positive). Way to make your SR feel old. What didn’t get old? Seeing everyone’s faces (or

maybe like ten on a good day, but hey) at our weekly pod meetings, which were always a source of many

insights (how many toddlers do you think you could take in a fight), or just out and about in the hallways on

the daily.

2 Central, you’ve been an excellent pod this year, and I wish you all the best for the future.

2 West

Pod Reports

It has been a fabulous year in the amazing 2 West! This year, our pod theme was the ‘Big Things’ around Australia,

from the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour to the Big Owl (perhaps known by other names) in the ACT.

Despite all the attractions lining our hallway, the best attraction was the great fun we had together. For our

pod function, we thoroughly enjoyed pizza night whilst watching the classic movie - the Devil Wears Prada -

and had a devil of a good time.

Whilst there are ups and downs of living in 2 West, from the early morning sounds (and smells) of the tip or

sewerage being emptied, or the banging of rubbish as it falls down the bin chute from level 7, there are some

major advantages, such as the proximity to the laundry, and the lovely winter afternoon sun. All in a lovely

day’s work in 2 West.

I’ve loved being the SR to 2 West this year, specifically in getting to know you all through our pod meetings!

The best one was where we debated whether all foods could be sorted into categories of either soup, salad,

sandwich or cake (have a think for yourself!). Through the year, we’ve developed great friendships and been

involved in lots of Bruce events. The highlight of which was winning the Bruce Hall Pod Trivia (shoutout to

Daniel for carrying the team!). All in all, it was an amazing year - thanks to all the Twestie Besties!

Well it’s been almost 9 months since our year at Bruce began and how time has flown! While we may not

have been the most culty pod (looking at you 7C) nor the party pod, 3 East has definitely been a wholesome

pod! We’ve had new members join us (Linn & Ava) and lost some along the way (Kailyn & Lydia).

Despite my best efforts at turning the nook into an IB shrine, I couldn’t even convince someone else to run

IB. However, 3 East’s podlings have been involved throughout Bruce Hall in sports, arts and of course, social

events (@ Lizzie & Sammy). Pod meetings have been infrequent and poorly attended (especially from our

CC Manett) but a thanks to pod meeting MVP Hugh, I was never left completely alone.

We’ve had some great moments as a group: creating monstrous pod chalk art, coming 2nd in pod trivia

thanks to careful positioning to the front and, of course, our pod functions. At the time of writing, there’s

only been a dinner trip to Greasy’s (where else?). Hopefully, by the time this is printed, we will have also

been to the RUC for some lawn bowls and other activities to celebrate the end of the year!

All in all, I have really enjoyed living in 3 East and getting to know each and every one of you. It’s been a

tough year at times, but it’s always nice to have another group of people that you can say hi to in the dining

hall. Thanks for a great year!

What a year it’s been, and it has been a wonderful year to be the SR for 3-Central. Right from the get-go, it

was so wonderful to see friendships form within the first few days of residents moving in and to have arguably

the best pod chalk I have seen in my time at Bruce Hall really marked a great sign of the

camaraderie that this pod was going to build.

Despite all the challenges that COVID-19 threw the pod, with cancelled events, wearing a mask just to go

to the bathroom and online pod meetings, no one was deterred from making the most of the year. Enjoying

cake over zoom, listening to bizarre stories from returners and even getting our very own fish tank – these

are just a few examples of this pod embracing its home for this year and forging strong

connections.

It has truly been a joy to see the pod collectively grow and support each other to become a more capable,

independent, and responsible group of people, albeit a very rowdy group as well, especially on a

Thursday night. I wish each and every one of you all the very best in your future endeavours, and as Dory

said, “Just keep swimming”.

2022 saw the welcoming of new and returning residents into our Bruce Hall community and importantly

into the 3 West ‘Tiny Towns’ pod. 3 West this year has been home to ressies from across Australia and

internationally with a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, interests and talents. Across the year,

members of the pod have really embraced what college has to offer being, involved in an array of college

activities such as sporting teams including IB, the BNO band, debating and Bruce X presentations.

Along with chilled-out pod meetings, pod activities saw 3 West completing against the other pods in rounds

of pod trivia whilst also enjoying a marshmallows galore bonfire at the Fenner fire pit in Semester 1. Later in

Semester 2, the pod will venture out to Tuggeranong for what is bound to be a highly competitive paint ball

day.

As an SR, it has been great to guide new residents, particularly those who were also new to university, make

that transition from high school to university and living independently in Canberra. Also, seeing all the 3

West residents enjoying their time at Bruce and assisting in any way possible has been incredibly rewarding.

It has been a busy yet exciting and fun-filled year with the 3 West pod making the most of college and

university life!

This year I had the privilege of being SR to a wonderful, talented, and inspiring group of residents. From IB

runners, musicians, photography and art enthusiasts to scientists, mountain bike riders, cricket connoisseurs

and law students, each one of my ressies brought their own personality and enthusiasm to breathe life into 4

East. As an SR, I wanted the theme of Flower Power to calm and de-stress my residents as they entered their

pod as well as inspire them to appreciate the beautiful things in life when the going gets tough.

Since O Week, I have loved watching you all form friendships and connections, represent Bruce in inter-hall

arts and sports competitions and embrace the Bruce culture and community - even if it means getting

annoyed as to where all the cups have gone. I have also enjoyed the various surprises throughout the year;

from the stellar attendance at our Greasys start-of-year pod function to the spontaneous haircuts in the

bathroom, and loud late-night music coming from the showers - you’ve certainly kept me on my toes.

To my fabulous returners, I am very grateful for your ongoing positivity and contributions! Shoutouts go to

Haydos for directing our (highly-anticipated) play; Yso for advocating mental health and wellbeing and Issy

for capturing Bruce’s best moments on camera!

4 East 2022, you are an amazing group, I hope you had a fantastic year and wish you all the best for the

What to bring when you are told not to bring a thing? 4C Favourites! Favs, you have brought fun, laughter

and the amazing banter to the BEST pod at Bruce. We come from all over Australia, from WA to even our

local townies, and yet have 4C feels like home. So, just like our namesake chocolates, if ever you need a smile

you can always count on a 4C Favourite to brighten your day we are the most kind-hearted, energetic,

positive Brucies you will ever meet.

Throughout the year, we have had so much fun. Highlights include winning the pod trivia, weekly Wordle

competitions and pancakes in the quad – always battling it out for the best pancake flip. In our weekly pod

meetings, you will often find us; playing Jenga, chatting about our week, having an epic with a Willy Wonka,

Pizza, PJ party including a popcorn catastrophe. Or maybe you won’t find us at all when we are playing a

hall-wide hide-and-seek game?

4C Favourites are one big family, celebrating each other’s successes and always being there to support each

other. We’ve celebrated 33 birthdays, the victory release from the COVID lockdown, achievements in sports,

arts and running for leadership positions.

Together 4C has been so active in our community, participating in butt nights, sports matches, World’s

Greatest Shave, presenting at Bruce X and performing in Big Night Out. We’ve got the coolest mascots:

Ringo the Palm Tree and Butter Bean the miniature donkey.

Packard. Central. East. West. Long ago, the four wings of Bruce lived together in harmony. Then, everything

changed when the new first years attacked. Only 4 West, master of all of Bruce, could unite them. But when

the world needed them most, they vanished (into covid isolation). What felt like a hundred years passed, and

I discovered the true 4 West, an incredible community with honorary members from all around Bruce. And

although their pod decorations were great, they had a lot to learn before they were ready to save anyone. But

I believe 4 West can save the world. Dunnnnn dun dun DUUUNNNN.

As the self-proclaimed Avatar of 4 West, I had the difficult responsibility of uniting and bringing balance to

my pod. Which really wasn’t very difficult at all because I was blessed with the most amazing group of

people. With our CRC and Advocates keeping Bruce going with their incredible events, some very

through-provoking (and concerning) weekly pod questions, and our pod-nook meme board, there was never

a dull moment.

We also objectively had the best bathrooms in the building, with a rotating selection of incredible memes and

some deceptively hard ‘Where’s Wally?’ posters (I still don’t know where Wally is). A highlight of the year was

of course watching Avatar: the Last Airbender for our pod function, but so was every other day that we got to

spend in 4 West. So here’s to the first years, the returners, the leaders, the quiet ones, the people we had to say

goodbye to, and the people we gained along the way. 4 West 2022 wouldn’t have been the same without you.

Go save the world.

5 Central has been incredible this year! It has been such an honour to be the SR for the Animal Crossing

pod. Despite not many podlings having played Animal Crossing or knowing what the heck pigeon milk was

(somehow, it’s even grosser when explained), we still created the wholesome, warm, and welcoming vibe that

Animal Crossing was supposed to represent.

Right from the get-go, the 5 Central podlings were all over the O-Week events! Seeing so many podlings put

themselves out there by running for leadership positions and participating in all the Bruce events has been

amazing.

Our weekly pod meetings were a huge highlight. Filled with good chats, lots of laughter, and incredibly

un-creative icebreakers from me, these were such an excellent chance to catch up with everyone and connect

with the pod. Our Semester 1 Grease Monkeys pod function was a very yummy way to get to know everyone!

It hasn’t happened yet, but I am very excited for our next pod function! The art room pod meeting was

also a massive highlight. Though there was only a small turnout, the vibes in that art room were absolutely

immaculate, and we ended up with some adorable wall decorations!

To carry on our consistent week out of 10, for our year out of 10, 5 Central 2022 definitely deserves AT

LEAST a 13/10! I wish you all the best for the future – I cannot wait to see the amazing things that each and

every one of you will achieve <3!

5 West

Pod Reports

From the very beginning of the year, it is clear that five west not only has the best location at Bruce, but also

has the best people. From the simple hellos in the hallway, to cute notes on each other’s doors – the

positive vibes in five west are truly unmatched. Our theme this year was ‘iconic gingers’. Despite being the

only redhead in the pod, the five westians really embraced the theme – with Lata going the extra mile by

dying her hair red halfway through the year.

We started the year out strong with a full-on O-week. It was great to see many of our second-year ressies

stepping up and helping to guide the first years through the trials and tribulations of moving away from

home. Highlights included pod trivia and pod chalk, where we were able to flex our intellectual and creative

prowess (despite being robbed in both events). It was a fantastic way to kick off a fantastic year!

Weekly pod meetings have been a particular highlight for me this year. Known to regularly run more than 2

hours, these catch ups involved snacks, tea (both literal and metaphorical) and procrastination from the rest

of our responsibilities. From the very start of the year, a loyal band of five westians would gather to catch up

on the weeks dramas and bond over shared struggles. Despite not having a communal meeting place in our

own pod, five west would migrate to the five central nook each Wednesday night and make it our home. In

the process, we succeeded in annoying the entirety of five central each week with our loud talking and

laughter.

Despite a somewhat rocky start to the first semester, with much of the pod having to isolate in their rooms

and covid restrictions forcing pod activities online for a few weeks – we in five west persevered. The year involved

some cracking pod functions, combined floor five gatherings and lots and lots of gelato cake. The pod

was constantly evolving – whether it be waking up every Friday morning and seeing how the decorations had

been rearranged the previous night or the gradual additions to our chalk drawings in the west stairwell, we

truly made our pod our own.

Thank you so much to everyone in five west for making this year so brilliant!!

I have been so fortunate to be the 6Central SR for such a wonderful group of Brucies celebrating the theme

of Coachella with a life-sized Harry Styles in the nook and the line-ups all around! We had a fabulous time

throughout O-Week with pod-chalk producing some memorable drawings, and getting to meet each other

and head to Bruce Moose for more fun! Whilst we may have had patient zero of the 2022 COVID-19

outbreak, this only brought the pod closer (not physically though) through the adversity we faced.

Pod meetings and pod functions were always entertaining and a nice opportunity to relax, catch up and hear

Dane talk slowly but animatedly for hours about his week! Even when I didn’t hold a pod meeting I would

enter common room 6 to find a small gathering and every time I passed through there was always a friendly

face studying away. 6C had a great time at the inaugural Winter Formal, during all the Bush-Week events and

will be sure to finish the year off strong!

6C dominated in the arts and sports events with VP Miranda coaching soccer and badminton and Players

Subcom Alex putting on the best play Bruce has seen in years. Em put on a great reconciliation sub-com

movie night and Lucy hosted a killer Alumni high table! I have loved seeing all my residents engage with the

Bruce culture and community and support one another across all the events this year! I’ve been really lucky

Pod Reports

We started off the year taking the whole ‘warm welcome’ thing perhaps a bit too literally with the face-melting heat

of level 7 summers – demanding pod meetings be held around pedestal fans. Keeping the fire burning, we burst

onto the scene by winning the team-spirit award for pod trivia (– which yes, wasn’t originally an award; and yes,

began early accusations of being the ‘cult-pod’). But the fun didn’t stop with O-week! We enjoyed underbooking

our way into some delicious pod functions at Greasy’s; hanging out in pod-meetings with some snacks; and making

some bold choices in door ornaments.

The whole floor got involved in Bruce/ANU life this year in a variety of talents, including acting, dance, and

e-sports – as well as some phenomenal open mic performances. And that’s not even mentioning some emerging

Bruce Hall sports stars and/or our wonderful IB coaches! Speaking of involvement, I would be remiss to leave out

the absurd CRC representation – not only having two execs but two first-year reps to boot. The highlights of 2022

would not have been possible without each and every ressie.

I have been truly grateful for the opportunity to call myself the SR of this pod and will always cherish the honour it

has been to get to know you all. I thank you all so much for the year that has passed, wish you nothing but the best

for the years ahead, and thank you one last time for making this penthouse a penthome.

Packard is where the real adults live.

Like Old Shanghai, Packard 1 welcomed residents from all over the world. It was the smallest pod in all of

Packard, but it consistently punched above its weight when it comes to event turnout. From pod meetings to a

wine-and-cheese night, our ground-floor Packardians actively participated in the life at Bruce.

You don’t need any special orienteering skills to find Packard 2 residents at a communal pizza night. Blessed

by famous orienteers on their doors as well as the SR’s personal race maps, this diverse group of residents even

boldly seceded from Packard and beat their counterparts in trivia. A truly competitive pod.

They say space is the final frontier, but you ain’t seen nothing yet until you’ve been graced by the portraits of

Nobel Prize winners and dazzling space wonders in Packard 3. They inspired a studious lifestyle among most

of the pod’s residents... for the most part - there’s nothing like wine, cheese and UNO to provide temptation.

With strong academic acumen, the honours and PhD students in Packard 4 conquered a “leaky” start of the

year and went on to form friendships that were tested again and again at board game nights. Whether it is

academic struggles or a leaky roof, Packard 4 only grew closer with one-on-one coffee grabs.

We thank our residents for a fantastic 2022.

Michael Ye, Xuanni Li, Ben Lemlin and Duncan Currie, 2022 Packard Senior Residents

Bruce Hall Play

153

As Bruce Lee once said, “simplicity is the key to brilliance,” and the Bruce Hall play this year was indeed

nothing short of brilliant, so from one Bruce to another, cheers. Residents, guests, friends, foes, family, and

even celebrities flocked from far and wide to see Bruce Hall’s finest players depict George Lucas’ modern

classic, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (Episode III). Some would say the audience turnout of roughly five

thousand (including Guy Sebastian) was unprecedented, but those involved in the play very much

precedented it.

We knew we were onto something special. From the first rehearsal it just clicked. At one point, Justin

Cementon jumped on Angus Myerscough’s back and together they started chasing and attacking Will Scott

with lightsabers over some sort of financial disagreement; and just like that General Grievous and Obi-Wan

Kenobi were born on the stage. This sort of synergy extended to the rest of the cast with Eve Hill’s Padme

gelling seamlessly with Ethan Bateman’s Anakin, after the two won the mixed croquet together during play

preparations. Ben Huntsman also made a great manipulative father figure in his impressive portrayal of

Palpatine, Luke Kirwin was a fantastic beheading victim as Dooku, Vanessa Hamilton-Kane effortlessly

brought Yoda to life on the stage, and Darcy Mellor should be commended for her brave performance as

Mace Windu.

Huge thank you and well done to the rest of the cast (Ed Ogilvy as R2D2, D’Arcy Todd as Pushing R2D2,

Freddie Phibbs as C3PO, Ben Napton as Darth Vader, Sarah Turner as Ki Adi Mundi, Yola Reinecke as

Medical Droid, Ethan Tudehope as Saesee Tiin, Hayden Chan as Kit Fisto, and Alex Leberne as Agen Kolar),

as well as our chief account James Tallent. Also big thanks to Margaret Morris for costuming and set design,

Charlie Reith for lighting, and Tabitha Woo for backstage management. This goliath of theatrical success

wouldn’t have nearly happened without these legends.

Finally thank you to my trusty Padawan, Hayden Chan, for his help as my second in command. As your

Chairman of the Players Subcommittee, director, and producer of the most successful and celebrated play

ever, I’d like to say how deeply touched I am by all your messages of gratitude. May the force be with all of

you.

This year the buttery was finally fully back in action after a few years of covid! We had a bunch of Butt nights

including Oktoberfest and Out Of This World, whilst also managing to keep everyone hydrated at Order of

Bruce. Though it was great to see everyone mingling through their drink of choice, it was arguably better

watching Wright think they had a chance at having a Butt night with us.

The Polaroid wall has been a huge success with ressies taking some sexy and some not so sexy photos of

themselves to put on display to everyone. If I come back in 10 years and the Polaroid wall is discontinued...

blood will be shed upon my entrance.

There are few things in life that give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside but none quite compared to people

asking “what ice-creams do you have?” or the classic “why don’t you have garlic bread?”. It appears the

greatest lie told was that “there were covid related market shortages” as opposed to the reality that we

couldn’t be bothered to go buy it.

Things were super smooth sailing with the Butt team this year. Tom dipped halfway through, Harry went

MIA for a term, and Soph went an entire year without a single complaint about anyone in the team. Louisa

joined the team halfway through the year (under the rule of yours truly) so she could finally have a reason for

having a bigger room. So yeah, no disturbances here.

So in summary...Bazinga.

I normally talk in numbers, so in this report, I’ll switch things up with an acrostic poem:

R – Ravioli. Chartwells does a good ravioli, and I commend them for it. Everyone should be able to

know the sheer joy that a good meal from Chartys brings.

A – Algorithm. Because the sheer amount of time that Facebook spends telling me to spend money on

ads and boost my page through the algorithm is laughable considering that the interest in my posts is

fairly niche.

T – Table. Yes, the dining hall table, where the majority of my ratings are cast and etched into eternity

via the internet. Truly historic stuff.

E – Eggplant. Man I hate eggplant. And mushrooms too. Don’t forget beetroot either. Look, the list is

pretty long and drastically affects my ratings, but I am not ashamed of that because they’re evil

vegetables and should be treated as such.

S – Stewart. My last name is actually Stewart. Not Rates. But I doubt anyone is going to remember that.

I’ve loved running this page for the last two years or so. I’m not sure how or if it will continue into the

future, but I do know that it’s been great fun, and I’m thankful that everyone has supported this silly

hobby of mine. Part of me hopes I’ve fulfilled my dreams of becoming a Brucefluencer and that this

yearbook will allow me the chance to cement myself in Bruce history, for someone to find in 10 years

and be really confused about.

This isn’t the end, but I also don’t know where I’ll be going from here. I’ve immensely enjoyed

introducing quizzes and connecting with Brucies even more than through my very low-bar food

opinions (despite being a very picky eater – see the above poem). I’d like to think that my ratings are

occasionally helpful though. The establishment of the ‘Top Fans of Miranda Rates’ Facebook group

truly skyrocketed my ego to such a high place that I fear it will never be able to be retrieved – granted

I am 5’4 on a good day so that probably, objectively, isn’t true.

Nevertheless, thanks to Bruce and its wonderful people for putting up with me for all this time in my

pursuit of spreading Chartwells dining information, and thanks in advance for continuing to do so.

Lots of love,

Miranda Rates (Stewart).

Superlatives

In the wise words of Miranda Stewart, “The Bruce Hall community is filled with a diverse group of

individuals, united by our love of the Best Hall. With that being said, there are certain members of the

community that stand out for being particularly good at something, or they appear to have a specific path

ahead of them in the world. This has led the hall to exercise our democratic right to vote for who should take

the various titles. Several candidates duked it out bit only one could be named...”

Editor’s Note

175

Thank you for reading Ouroboros 2022, Bruce Hall’s yearbook for this year!

After many painstaking hours of learning how to use Adobe InDesign, and then forgetting how to use

InDesign and watching more YouTube tutorials, and my 13-inch Macbook crashing SO many times while

editing and inducing near-total panic that I deleted the file, this is the end result!

Still, it’s been very fun editing this and creating a compilation of the wonderful year we’ve had at Bruce. It has

been especially enjoyable to sift through all the photos taken and edited by the awesome Media and Design

Team and realising I have essentially unfettered power to put embarrassing photos of people in this book.

Nonetheless, I have tried using this power sparingly.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me edit this yearbook by providing written reports or advice on the

design and the contents. Shoutout to Miranda Stewart’s guidance on not using Microsoft Word, and

especially her wise words to not follow through on my original plans for the Superlatives nominations.

I hope you have enjoyed flicking through the yearbook, and scan the QR code to access the online

Ouroboros!
