McLaren Vale Wine Show - Mission Statement

VISION:

For the McLaren Vale Wine Show to be recognised as the premier regional wine show in Australia.

MISSION:

1. To showcase McLaren Vale wines and the region to local, interstate and international markets.

2. To ensure that excellence in varietal expression, viticulture, production, provenance and subregionality

are celebrated.

3. To develop a vehicle that provides experiences and creates value for the producers and assists them

in effectively promoting their products.

4. To contribute in building the presence and prestige that is brand McLaren Vale.

5. To innovate, engage and educate in order to enable the producers to connect with media and the

general public to build interest in the region as a whole.

6. To have best practice administration with a diverse and strong committee structure, as well as

traceable and transparent use of funds.

Chair of Judges - Andrew Thomas

Andrew Thomas, son of legendary Bushing Monarch Wayne Thomas,

was always destined to work in wine. During his formative winemaking

years (and despite being groomed for a possible winemaking career

in South Australia) he developed a deep passion for finesse, and

the more subtle and savoury structured wines of the Hunter Valley.

Andrew began his winemaking journey at Tyrrell’s Vineyards under

the guidance of Murray Tyrrell. Overseas vintage stints included

Sonoma, Tuscany, Piedmont and Provence. Thomas Wines was established in 1997 with a with a clear and

focused objective to specialise in single vineyard Hunter Valley semillon and shiraz. Since then, Andrew has

been Awarded Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year in 2008 and 2014, with his wines winning numerous

awards and trophies over the years.

Andrea Pritzker MW

Andrea Pritzker is a Master of Wine and is the founder of Wine inTuition, a wine education

and corporate events business in Sydney. A certified WSET educator, she also works as

an independent wine consultant, wine judge, writer and public speaker. Born and raised

in Toronto, Canada, she obtained a Diploma in Wine Commerce in Bordeaux, France,

before moving to Australia in 2003. Andrea’s diverse career in the wine trade has spanned

wholesale, retail, fine wine auction, digital marketing and buying. She became a Master

of Wine in 2015. Andrea is Australia’s Burgundy Wine Ambassador and is also a member

of the governing Council for the Institute of Masters of Wine.

Class Comment: Lovely to see a bracket of new emerging white varieties with wines that have been thought about. Awarded

Wines had texture, acid and fruit balance. A special mention to the Grenache Gris that was so close to a Gold but was just slightly

lacking in fruit persistence to get over the line.

Class Comment: Wow, what a class! Six callbacks, all with strong support for various reasons. The top wine was pure and austere,

but with fantastic texture and length. This is not to be dismissive of those with perhaps more ripeness and winemaking influence,

these wines have also been awarded and very narrowly missed out on the trophy. A highlight of the show with many beautiful

wines, reflective of the vintage.

Class Comment: Lovely but challenging class to condense, with a vast array of styles keeping the judges on their toes. Best wines

came from the 2021 vintage (no surprises), with excellent brightness and purity. Top two wines couldn't be more different in style,

which promoted great conversation. Both were beautiful & complex wines, well done. Weakest wines were from 2020, with the

challenging vintage starting to show up in the overall quality of the wines.

Class Comment: The results speak volumes for Grenache based blends in this region. The top wines were quite stylistically

diverse, but all displayed ripe vibrant fruit and delicious texture. Slightly more challenging when it came to judging the older wines

with lots of tired, extracted, overripe characters. Best wine in this section had complex structure and fine acid line balanced with

pure savoury fruit.

Class Comment: Always a pleasure to judge these entries. The best brackets of the class showed brightness and structural

complexity across all three vintages and clearly demonstrated the cellaring potential of the best that McLaren Vale has to offer. The

entries where the older vintages showed some excessive development for their years were unfortunately all too easily dismissed. I

wonder if we will ever see a bracket of white entered in this class……
