Wanna talk about sex? The Bits Bootycamps pop-up installation is Bits

Bodywears’ newest offline experience where sex-ed is anything but frigid

and dull. The pop-up installation is created for the ‘Bits Bootycamps’

campaign to connect with Bits’ target audience and user group through

offline communication. With the Bits Bootycamps, Bits takes a 69degree

turn to reimagine sex-ed by asking ‘’awkward’’ questions everyone has, but

no one dares to ask. By doing so, Bits serves you all the accurate answers

you actually need instead of the unreliable and outdated information our

teachers gave us in high school.

The Bootycamp pop-up installation is filled with hot topics, answering the

most google-searched awkward questions you ladies searched online.

The pop-up installation stimulates the target audience to have an open

conversation and encourages them to interact with one another. By

combining emotion and function, Bits turns TMI (too much information)

into GMI (give more information). Bits turns sexploration into a fun and

light-hearted offline event where Bits Bodywears’ target audience can for

the first time physically meet and interact. The festival installation will show

a fun contemporary translation in shapes, textures, and colors, fitting to the

Bits Bootycamp campaign.

The current target audience, user group and potential consumers are

triggered by the Bootycamp pop-up installation, which increases the

accessibility and relevance of the brand.

WHERE TO SEXPLORE

Love, sex, and rock ’n’ roll! Don’t act like you did

not have sex on a music festival, so let’s start

sexploring on Lowlands! Sex happens where

the people at, intoxicated by love, happiness,

and maybe even other substances. That’s why

Bits brings the pop-up installation to Lowlands,

a dynamic musical festival in the Netherlands.

With its yearly 60.000 visitors, Lowlands is the

place to be for The Exploring Bloomer to explore,

dance, and.. sex! In collaboration with Sexyland,

Bits creates an inside-out environment where

diversity, equality, and education are central

pillars of the blooming community. Surrounded

by the vibrant sexy atmosphere and bouncing

beats, visitors of Lowlands are compelled to

participate in Bits’ pop-up installation.

SHAPES

ORGANIC

The shapes used in the Bootycamp pop-up installation, are organic,

feminine, fun, and bubbly. Bits likes to keep things playful and lighthearted.

But that does not mean that we cant keep things real.

To translate the female body Bits uses organic sloping shapes. Next to

that, the uterus is used as the main inspiration for the framework of the

pop-up installation.

When it comes to sex, dripping fluids are definitely not unusual. That is

why we chose to incorporate these dripping organic shapes to make it a

lil’ nasty. Just like the ‘‘awkward’’ questions the Bootycamp answers, we

like to normalize body fluids and the female body in any shape or size.

DESIGN BRIEFING

Bits BOOTYCAMPS

For the Bits Bootycamp pop-up installation

it is important that function and emotion are

intertwined. By combining emotion and function,

Bits makes bold statements, but with the function

to educate and answer a selection of your most

burning ‘’awkward’’ sex-ed questions.

28

FUNCTIONAL

• The pop-up installation is located on popular

music festivals like Lowlands and Wildebrug to

physically attract the target audience and Bits’

current user group. The Exploring Bloomers love

pop culture and appreciate a dash of Dua Lipa

and Lady Gaga to spice things up. Because of

the free, open-minded atmosphere, the buzzing

music, alcohol (other substances), and the sun,

the target audience feels confident, sexy, and in

the mood to talk about sex!

• The pop-up installation needs to have an

intimate but open feeling. Because of the ovary

shape, the base of the installation is somewhat

shielded from the crowd festival grounds. This

creates an intimate inside-out space that feels

open and accessible, but intimate enough to

address certain sex-ed topics

• Forget the dancing ladies, we all know there is

a moment at a festival, we just want to lay back

and relax! The shape and colors used for the

Bootycamp pop-up installation, need to engage,

invite and attract visitors to lay down, relax and

chill in the enlarged ‘’ovary eggs’’.

• Inside the ‘’egg’’, the base of the pop-up

installation needs to be triggering, fun, and

bubbly. The target audience needs to feel

impelled and triggered to the base of the pop-up

installation.

• The pop-up installation needs to have 6 different

compartments at the base of the installation,

where 6 hand-picked topics/questions are being

addressed and answered. Each compartment

has its own style, look, feel, and function,

according to the ‘’awkward’’ question addressed.

• There will be no staff at the Bootycamp

pop-up installation. The object itself and the

6 compartments where the sex-ed answers

are being communicated, need to speak for

themselves to start the conversation and

interaction amongst The Exploring Bloomers.

• The sex-ed needs to be given through tangible,

visual, and (for some topics) audible elements,

focused on the female body and pleasure. It

needs to be informative and educational but in

an interactive, fun, and bubbly way.

• 1 of the 6 sections in the base of the installation

needs to answer the question: How much blood

is too much blood?

• 1 of the 6 sections in the base of the installation

needs to answer the question: Is it normal that

my breasts don’t look like Pamela’s?

• 1 of the 6 sections in the base of the installation

needs to answer the question: Is it safe to send

nudes?

• 1 of the 6 sections in the base of the installation

needs to answer the question: My discharge

looks funky, is that normal?

• 1 of the 6 sections in the base of the installation

needs to answer the question: Why don’t my

private parts look like a centerfold?

• 1 of the 6 sections in the base of the installation

needs to answer the question: Are my mood

swings hormonal?

30

EMOTIONAL

• The Bootycamp Pop-up installation needs to

inspire young women to #daretoask their own

‘’awkward’’ sex questions.

• The Bootycamp pop-up installation encourages

young women to openly talk about sex, their

sexuality, and the female body. We want them to

feel empowered, safe, seen, and heard.

• The core values: Liberating transparency,

sexy comfort, and bubbly playfulness need to

be translated through the Bootycamp pop-up

installation.

• Liberating transparency needs to be translated

PROGRAM OF REQUIREMENTS

through an open inside-out structure accessible to

everyone, translucent colourful materials, and a lighthearted,

open and free way of communicating sexed.

No beating around the bush, just the real deal!

• Sexy comfort is translated through bold and

real visualizations of the female body, such as the

diversity of vulvas and breasts. It needs to create

a feeling of empowerment through honest but fun

visualizations of ‘’awkward’’ questions. Bits wants to

show The Exploring Bloomer that no question is too

embarrassing or awkward to ask since every female

has them.

• Bubbly playfulness is translated through the use

of Bits’ signature colors. The Bootycamp pop-up

installation needs to burst with color to create a lighthearted

and fun atmosphere. Because of the color

pop, serious sex-ed topics become more accessible

and less serious.

• Above all, the Bootycamp pop-up installation needs

to be fun! Especially in the translation of the 6 base

sections of the pop-up installation which answer the

never-dared-to-ask sex questions.

FUNCTIONAL

• The first section of the Bootycamp pop-up

installation needs to answer the question: ‘Why

don’t my private parts look like a centerfold?’

This needs to be done in a visual, tangible, and

fun way.

• This section of the base must provide The

Exploring Bloomer with accurate and real

information about the diversity of vulvae, with the

purpose of education.

• Diverse vulvae need to be shown in a fun and

bubbly way, to show young women the diversity

of vulvae. No vulva is imperfect, or perfect, and

that’s exactly what the Bootycamps highlight.

• It needs to be a tangible 3D vulva wall. Not

just a print.

EMOTIONAL

• The section ‘Why don’t my private parts look

like a centerfold?’ Needs to create recognition

and empowerment amongst young women to

embrace their bodies and vulvae.

• The section needs to inspire young women to

#daretoask their own ‘’awkward’’ sex questions

to normalize talking about sex and female

pleasure to break the taboo.

• The Bits Bootycamps wants The Exploring

Bloomer to feel heard and seen.

• The visitors need to experience fun and

openness while being educated on the topic of

female sexuality and pleasure.

Bits BOOTYCAMPS

FUNCTIONAL

• The second section of the Bootycamp pop-up

installation needs to answer the question: ‘How

much blood is too much blood?’ This needs to be

done in a visual, tangible, and fun way.

• This section of the base must provide The

Exploring Bloomer with accurate and real

information about menstruation, for the purpose

of education.

• An abstract installation of ‘’blood’’ visualizes

how much blood is lost during a woman’s life.

Connected are 4 headphones with information

about normal and abnormal blood loss. The

information will be given by a professional, in a

fun and bubbly way.

EMOTIONAL

• The section ‘How much blood is too much

blood?’ Needs to create normalization

concerning the subject of menstruation.

• The Exploring Bloomer is informed, and with

that reassured and educated about the topic of

menstrual flow.

• The section needs to inspire young women to

#daretoask their own ‘’awkward’’ sex questions

to normalize talking about menstruation and the

female body to break the taboo.

Dare-To-Ask: Amanda

Is it normal that my

breasts don’t look like

Pamela’s?

d

Unless you’ve had a boob job, don’t count on perfectly

symmetrically breasts.

That’s because breasts are made of mammary gland

tissue and fat, and have naturally different amounts in

each, explains Glenn Updike, M.D., assistant professor

of obstetrics and gynecology at Magee Women’s

Hospital in Pittsburgh.

For some women, the difference is more pronounced –

but it’s usually a cosmetic issue.

The fix: If it’s embarrassing or affecting your sex life,

surgery is an option.

If one breast suddenly becomes much larger than the

other, it could indicate an infection or tumor. Run to

your gynecologist to have it evaluated immediately.

FUNCTIONAL

• The third section, ‘Is it safe to send nudes?’, needs to be linked to a selfie

area where the Bootycamp face filters can be used, and directly posted on

the Bootycamp platform. The selfie area with an incorporated face filter allows

visitors to directly post on Instagram and TikTok to create a buzz and publicity.

• The moment someone posts or sends an image with the Bootycamp face

filter, a disclaimer needs to pop up with a disclaimer informing the user of the

pros and cons of sending nudes.

• This section of the Bootycamp pop-up installation needs to answer the

question: ‘Is it safe to send nudes’ This needs to be done in a visual, tangible,

and fun way

• This section of the base must provide The Exploring Bloomer with accurate

and real information about boundaries, with the purpose of education.

EMOTIONAL

• The section ‘Is it safe to send nudes?’ Needs to create awareness. Because

let’s be honest, everybody does it but does not think about the consequences.

It needs to be precautionary. But in a fun way.

• The visitors need to experience fun and openness while being educated on

the topic of female sexuality and pleasure.

• The section needs to inspire young women to #daretoask their own ‘’awkward’’

FUNCTIONAL

• The sixth and final section of the Bootycamp

pop-up installation needs to answer the question:

‘Are my mood swings hormonal?’ This needs to

be done in a visual, tangible, and fun way.

• This section of the base must provide The

Exploring Bloomer with accurate and real

information about hormones, for the purpose of

education.

• To answer the question about hormonal

stability connected to our emotions, a real ‘mood

swing’ is used. By rocking the swing and holding

the heart rate measuring handlebars, emotional

stability is being measured. For example, a high

heart rate is connected to higher emotional

stability and hormonal wellbeing. Where a

lower heart rate is associated with more trouble

regulating your emotions, increased anxiety, and

a misbalance in your hormones and thus mood.

EMOTIONAL

• The section ‘Are my mood swings hormonal?’,

Needs to create normalization concerning the

subject of mood swings and hormonal stability

and by that build recognition and empowerment

STUDIO UKU

IN THE HANDS OF UKU

The Bootycamp pop-up installation is going

to be created by Studio UKU. Specialized

in conceptual festival stages, pop-ups, and

installations for festivals such as De Zon, Into

the Woods, and Down the rabbit hole, UKU

knows how the job needs to be done. To keep

the costs low and the pop-up installation as

sustainable as possible, they will use materials

from waste streams. Waste stream materials

have a low purchase price per M2, and in the

hands of Studio UKU, just as good-looking as

expensive new materials.

To make the pop-up even more sustainable and

reduce the costs even further, Studio UKU takes

ownership of the installation. This means that

they pay for most of the materials, and production

costs will be less. After the event, Studio UKU

breaks down the pop-up and the materials will

be reused for other projects. This is often done

when a company has a small budget.

45

Whenever Bits Bodywear decides to use the

pop-up installation for more than 3 festivals,

Studio UKU recommends investing in the popup.
