Page 10B Business Profile 2022 LEGACY DRILLING LTD. Trusted to do a good job Jeff Southworth got into the water well drilling business 21 years ago. At first it was simply because he needed a job, but then he discovered that this was work that he really enjoyed doing. Jeff worked for Lousana Water Wells for 17 years. In the spring of 2019 bought Legacy Water Well Drilling based in Hanna, Alberta and moved the office to Delburne. He now services the large area of east central Alberta from Rocky Mountain House to the Saskatchewan border. Legacy Drilling Ltd. will drill a new well for you or fix and repair pumps and wells. “If I can't fix it then it is probably a major problem that can't be fixed,” said Jeff. Being the business owner can be a real challenge but it has renewed his passion for the job. He gets real pleasure seeing that water come up out of the ground. It makes him feel good to know that the well he drilled is going to help a farmer get water to his livestock. His customers quickly see that he can be trusted to do a good job and most become good friends. Legacy Drilling Ltd. is a family run company. Jeff and his wife Alison have three sons. The oldest at 21 has grown up and moved away from home, but the two youngest at ages 17 and 15 are still home and help Dad whenever they can. Jeff also likes to keep one extra worker on staff. Lougheed’s trading area has a diversified economic base, with traditional roots in both agriculture and the oilfield industry, and has promise for future growth and prosperity. Lougheed is home to both commercial and industrial business, providing products and services to the community and area, including a grocery store, banking, Diamond J Bakery, costume rental, machinery dealerships, agri-retail business, and water well drilling. Lougheed has a liquor store backside of the grocery store called - Tippy’s Liquor Store, a new restaurant - Ma N Pa’s Family Restaurant and Cold Treats. The Lougheed Seed Cleaning Plant has built a new modernized facility, opening in 2017 and greatly adding to the northern horizon of the village. Lougheed Ag Society will be celebrating its 100th Fair on August 12, 2023. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Lougheed is named in remembrance of Victoria Cross recipient, C.J. Kinross . Private Kinross’s citation shows that “throughout the day he showed marvelous coolness and courage, fighting with the utmost aggressiveness against heavy odds until he was seriously wounded.” Private Kinross single-handedly knocked out a machine gun crew. The Legion Hall’s “Wall of Honour” proudly displays the framed photos and biographies of over 60 Veterans from the Lougheed area, including Victoria Cross recipient C.J. Kinross, immortalizing those who participated in the World Wars. The Wall of Honour is a unique and cherished statement to the pride of this community and the honour bestowed for our military residents. If you are in the area, make sure to stop in and enjoy the food and warm hospitality. For residents and visitors alike, the Village has something to offer in all seasons. Spring, summer and fall, you will find two campgrounds and picnic locations, trout pond, model aircraft field, museum, four regulation baseball diamonds, a walking trail and an annual Agricultural Fair held in August. During the winter, the “hub of activity” is at the Lougheed Field House with its 24-hour gym and a variety of ongoing activities and indoor sports, as well as the curling rink. Olympic champion, Kevin Martin started his curling career in Lougheed throwing rocks many nights after school. Lougheed has a very active community life, with ample opportunity to participate in the Village’s many community service organizations and social groups. Bingos, socials and other community events are held in the community hall, as well as the Seniors’ Centre and Lions’ Den. The Community Society hosts an oldfashion Christmas every year. On a Saturday before Christmas, you can join the fun for a tree decorating contest, old fashioned games, exhibits, Mrs. Claus has a kitchen with goodies and, of course, Santa Claus makes an appearance to present the children with goodies. Within the last few years, Lougheed has become home to the largest population of ‘Mexican Mennonites’ within the Flagstaff region. To accommodate this population as they deal with their new Canadian home, the citizens of Lougheed have initiated events and enterprises to ensure a smooth transition to their new chosen home. Business Profile 2022 Page 11B Delicious cuisine, down home hospitality by Treena Mielke Annie Mae Cummer had not much more than a shoestring budget and a dream to go on when she opened Mae’s Kitchen on Feb. 5, 2018. “I had a dream of opening a restaurant and I borrowed $800 from my husband, and I went for it,” she recalled. For Annie Mae, who is not one to shy away from a challenge, the meagre start up funds combined with hard work and excellent business sense proved to be all that was needed to turn her dream into reality. Customers who stop by Mae’s Kitchen, located in the heart of downtown Mirror, can be sure they will be treated to a healthy dose of old-fashioned hospitality along with delicious cuisine. “We are a downhome restaurant,” said Annie. “We serve good food, not fast food. We are all about healthy eating and, along with our regular meals, we also offer the choice of gluten free, dairy free, vegan, and vegetarian dishes. The 24-seat restaurant is open daily serving customers from Sunday to Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and from Thursday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Restaurant hours do not change in the winter. Mae’s Kitchen 5303-50 Ave., Mirror, AB 403-788-2082 maecummer@gmail.com Facebook - Mae’s Kitchen Annie, who was the main cook at another local restaurant before opening her own business and had worked in other restaurants previously, is a people person who enjoys getting to know her customers. “Everyone is welcome in our restaurant, no matter what their beliefs are.” Annie is proud and pleased that she has hardworking, loyal staff. “During COVID, we followed all the rules and only had takeout when it was required, but not one person got laid off and no one missed a paycheck.” Annie’s husband, Dennis has now come on board to help with Mae’s Kitchen and a part time cook has also been hired. Annie and Dennis have lived in Mirror for 12 years and love the community. “We have made our home here and we are very happy here,” said Annie. Solution to your hearing concerns Over 4 years ago Maxine started out on a grand adventure moving out of Calgary to Three Hills and opening her first hearing aid office. It’s been an incredible journey that just keeps getting better with the opening of her second office in Hanna. She is splitting her time between the two offices with Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays in Three Hills and Thursday and Fridays in Hanna. Maxine began her career in Edmonton in 1986. In 1997 she accepted a position that brought her to Calgary. Her last position was at the Calgary Ear Center where she worked with a team of specialists providing a one stop approach to hearing health care offering everything from counseling, Tinnitus management, hearing aids, to surgical solutions for clients. Although she found the work extremely rewarding she also found the pace of an ever growing city a bit overwhelming and longed to slow things down, which brought her to Three Hills. The overwhelming response to her much needed services has enabled her to again expand with the addition of another practitioner, Jenny Tullikopf.
