RAJA YOGA

This way is methodical and introspective. Through meditative

practice, it seeks to "control" the mind. Developing a relationship

with "God" or "consciousness" requires detaching from one's

egocentric sense of self and replacing it with a sense of oneness

with the actual Self that exists in all beings. Because of its focus on

inside transformation rather than public spiritual demonstration,

Raja yoga is often viewed as a very disciplined practice.

JNANA YOGA

Able to think and act wisely; knowledgeable. This practice is

known as the yoga of knowledge, or the awakening to one's own

authenticity. It was first described around 400 BC and has since

gained a reputation as one of the most straightforward yet

challenging routes to enlightenment. Jnana yogis are typically

regarded as priests and academics because of their dedication to the

practice of incessant self-study.

TANTRA YOGA

"Tan" means "to expand" or "to weave," and it is from these verbs

that Tantra derives. Its origins can be traced back to around 500

BC, when it was practiced as a religion focused on the

investigation of all aspects, sensations, and energies that weave

through the body and mind. It is the first time the physicality of the

human body started to become essential within a yogic

environment, and it dominated Indian culture for nearly a thousand

years in its more moderate versions.

HATHA YOGA

Yoga is a Force of Nature. Many yoga instructors interpret these

two Sanskrit words to signify the Sun (Ha) and the Moon (Tha),

respectively, and explain that the goal of the physical yoga practise

is to achieve a state of internal harmony between these two

elements (Sun and Moon). Hatha yoga's true meaning and essence

is to alter one's body and mind via experimentation, movement, and

physical power.

BHAKTI YOGA

Devotion. Bhakti is derived from the root term 'Bhaj,' the core of

which is 'to share,' and it was first used in The Bhagavad Gita

approximately 300 B.C. Heartfelt devotion to a personal deity is

the foundation of this style of yoga (Ishta Devata). Bhakti yoga,

like Karma yoga, emphasizes service to a deity or "God" as a

central practice.

KARMA YOGA

This yoga tradition, which was first referenced around 300 B.C., is

central to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. Giving without

expecting anything in return is at the heart of Karma Yoga. It is

fundamental to Indian philosophy and religion since it is through

this practice that one can reach unity with "the divine" by viewing

all of one's actions as a sacrifice to God.
