My Disastrous Camping Trip<br />

Friday<br />

The weather has been glorious <strong>for</strong> weeks, with beautiful sunshine and<br />

bright blue skies while we have been stuck inside a classroom at boring<br />

school. Finally, the holidays are here! Tomorrow, we are going camping<br />

and I can’t wait. I’ve packed my bag with shorts, T-shirts, sunscreen, my<br />

sunglasses, a book, a torch and shoes. My parents are sorting the camping<br />

stuff. We have borrowed my uncle’s fancy tent<br />

with inflatable poles, two bedroom compartments<br />

and a central area. We also have a camping<br />

stove, cosy sleeping bags and airbeds.<br />

Saturday<br />

I was rudely awakened this morning by my<br />

irritating younger sister but I didn’t mind too<br />

much. My parents had already loaded the car<br />

and the bikes were fitted onto the roof. We weren’t allowed to take<br />

our phones or tablets camping, which was a bit annoying, but I was still<br />

excited. We finally set off …<br />

Suddenly, we came to a halt because the traffic was at a standstill. We<br />

were going nowhere. Impatiently, people honked their horns and drivers<br />

shouted at each other. It took three hours to get through the roadworks.<br />

There was nothing to do, I was so bored. I couldn’t believe our parents<br />

hadn’t allowed us to bring our tablets.<br />

We cheered when we slowly began to set off again. Then the torrential<br />

rain started. The sky turned black and thunderous-looking clouds rolled<br />

overhead. Rain pounded the windows, bulbous drops slid down the glass<br />

and I was wishing I had packed a waterproof coat.<br />

Finally, we arrived at the campsite but it didn’t look quite like the<br />

brochure. Surprisingly, the entrance gate was broken and the pitches<br />

looked like a sea of brown sludge with just the odd spike of green grass<br />

poking through. We were allotted a space right next to the bathroom<br />

facilities, which were extraordinarily stinky. I had to hold my nose as I got<br />

out of the car and promptly lost my shoe in the mud. Unbelievably, my<br />

parents managed to erect the tent in the drizzling rain. I was so frozen I<br />

couldn’t get into my sleeping bag fast enough!<br />

Sunday<br />

What a disastrous night! A barking dog kept us awake and I just couldn’t<br />

get warm in my sleeping bag. Un<strong>for</strong>tunately, the inflatable poles didn’t<br />

hold up and the tent deflated and collapsed in the middle of the night. By<br />

5 am we were back in the car and heading home.<br />
