Society presents
interesting future
Dear Editor,
Badlands Historic Society Salute to
Agriculture presents an interesting
future.
Plans to move forward were the
focus of a Clam Chowder Night at
Drumheller Jurassic Inn Oct. 12.
Reeves of adjacent counties and the
Special Areas met with museum staff
and considered the benefits of an
annual regional 4-H rally point as one
answer to some coming issues.
One is the need to have new membership
as older members retire. A
second benefit would be the exposure
to and publicity spread, as the visitors
returned to their homes.
The Ag-Salute program would invite
and challenge our young visitors to
write and submit stories to the
museum of their home areas through
writing, photos, videos, art and crafts.
This would broaden our offerings to
all Albertans. They would also be
encouraged to use required 4-H public
speaking skills to their families and
regional audiences.
The natural attractions in each of
Kneehill, Wheatland, Starland and
Special Areas are not only unique but
of high trust value.
Large economic enterprise offer
huge ag-interest such as the giant
greenhouse project of the Sunterra
group, grain handling and shipping
pints, ranching projects and the vast
grasslands all have huge interest for
keen young agricultural leaders of the
near future.
The 4-H Rally program would be a
winner for the Salute to Agriculture
Museum but also to tourism, economic
opportunities and general interest.
The museum itself is faced with the
inherited problem of an expensive roof
repair. This has delayed the opening
of the building. Until it can be open
and functioning there is a credibility
problem. Larger donors such as fertilizer
firms, Ag-Insurance companies
and banks will be probable donors
only to an operating concern.
Likewise grant programs are largely
based on operating businesses and
non-profit groups. With these problems
facing museum members, an
appeal for $5000 from each of the adjacent
counties and the Town of
Drumheller was made.
Encouraging remarks were heard
from the invited reeves. Their councils
will have to give the final approval.
All agreed that there is great value in a
continued liaison between Drumheller,
the bordering counties and the Special
Areas.
We share many common interests.
Emergency Act, simply put
Dear Editor,
Emergency Measures Act enacted or
put in place was wrong.
The act came down on the Freedom
Convoy because of a lack of leadership
by the Federal Government and our
Prime Minster.
Because no one in the Liberal government
or the Prime Minister made
an apparent or visible attempt to meet
with people from the convoy; the result
was a lengthy stay by some Freedom
convoy members on the city of Ottawa,
the capital that serves every
Canadian.
The Freedom Convoy consisted of
law-abiding Canadians who wanted to
make their concerns known to government
and the Prime Minister in
charge, Justin Trudeau. This is the
fact of the matter.
After all the effort made by the
convoy members – it appeared that no
one in the Federal Government made a
proper attempt to dialogue concerns of
the convoy.
Had the Prime Minister or Prime
Minister’s Office (PMO) made it clear
at or before the arrival time of the
convoy that there would be a meeting
set up consisting of relevant government
members, the PMO, the Prime
Minister and representative members
from the Freedom convoy and the several
additional groups in the convoy;
and that this meeting would be held in
a safe and orderly fashion; the convoy
would have left Ottawa shortly after
that meeting of substance and good
will had transpired.
I am sure this meeting would have
been expected and accepted by the
Canadian public, the Ottawa police,
and the convoy.
The Government and the Prime
Minister shirked their huge duty of
‘leadership responsibility’ to all the
law-abiding citizens in the convoy and
Canadian citizens across this country.
Were the police blindsided when it
became apparent that the Prime
Minister and his government were not
going to have meaningful discussions
with the convoy?
Yes, to me it is obvious. By the time
Canada’s ‘leader’ displayed reluctance
to dialogue reasonably with the
Freedom convoy, that is when a
growing and lengthy occupation set in.
The Emergencies Act came about
because of the lack of Canada’s ‘leadership’
at the highest level and was used
as an excuse for political inaction by
our nation’s leadership.
the detachment, advising the members
that he wanted police to shoot him.
The male also advised police that he
had a handgun in his pocket.
The male then returned to his
vehicle and left the Consort RCMP
detachment and a traffic stop was initiated.
The male stopped his vehicle and
exited it with an axe and knife, telling
the Consort/Coronation RCMP members
that they needed to do something
as we walked towards them with
weapons in his hands.
A Conducted Energy Weapon was
deployed and the male dropped his
weapons and went to the ground. The
male then attempted to grab the axe
again but the members were able to
safely take him into police custody.
During this incident, threats were
made to the police, and not the public.
As a result of the investigation,
Consort RCMP have charged Charles
Alexander Lair (37), a resident of
Consort, with two counts of mischief
over $5000, resist/ obstruct a Peace
Officer, assault with a weapon, possession
of a weapon for a dangerous
purpose and uttering threats.
Lair was released on cash bail with
conditions and will be appearing in
Coronation Provincial Court on Dec. 9,
