Indeed, under the guidance of Eddie Howe, who replaced Steve Bruce last November, the Magpies eventually finished 11th. Over the second half of the season, Newcastle were the joint third-best team in the league. The transformation has continued this term with Newcastle sitting fourth. A comfortable top-half finish and a cup run was the public aim in the summer. Howe has galvanised a set of under-performing players, but having money to spend following the club’s muchpublicised takeover has also helped. Nearly £90m was spent 19.10.22 Almirón Premier League in January, while this summer former Saints left-back Matt Targett was signed from Aston Villa following a loan spell, goalkeeper Nick Pope arrived from Burnley and £32m was splashed on Lille defender Sven Botman. A club-record £63m was paid for Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak. However, after two goals in his first three games, a thigh injury ruled him out until after the World Cup. Being fourth in the league is no coincidence. From pressing and long passes in behind the defence to wing-play and set-pieces, this Newcastle side have clear ideas in and out of possession. The Toon haven’t found themselves in such a lofty position this deep into a Premier League campaign since 2011/12, when they finished fifth. 23.10.22 Wilson, Almirón Premier League 29.10.22 Wilson (2, 1 pen), Joelinton, Almirón Premier League the boss: ENGLISH / AGE: 44 Eddie Howe succeeded Steve Bruce as Newcastle’s head coach a year ago this month and has already achieved legendary status on Tyneside. He had been out of management since departing Bournemouth in August 2020 following their relegation. Leaving aside a brief interlude at Burnley, Howe had become synonymous with the Cherries’ rise from the foot of the Football League. The former Bournemouth centre-back, who had retired at the age of 29 due to a knee injury, was named their manager in December 2008. He secured the Cherries’ league status after they had begun the season with a 17-point penalty for failing to comply with insolvency rules and guided them to promotion the following year. Although Howe left to become Burnley boss midway through the 2010/11 campaign, he rejoined Bournemouth in October 2012, eventually leading the Cherries to the Premier League for the first time in 2015. Ten-year record: league 16 th one to watch: PARAGUAYAN / MIDFIELDER / AGE: 28 “Playing like (Miguel) Almirón” – that jibe from Jack Grealish – now means scoring more goals than Gabriel Jesus and Mohamed Salah this season. With six goals in as many games in October, Almirón has bagged more Premier League strikes inside 29 days as Grealish has since his British-record move to Manchester City 15 months ago. Almirón is an attacker reborn. His tally of seven goals this term is already Almirón’s best return for a Premier League season. He managed zero in 2018/19, four in 2019/20, four in 2020/21 and one in 2021/22. The St James’ Park faithful unfurled a ‘Wor Miggy’ banner in August to show their support for a player who is very much repaying the faith they’ve shown in him since his arrival from Atalanta United. It’s not just his goals that make him a fans’ favourite. “His work ethic is just incredible,” Eddie Howe said recently. 10 th 10 th th 11th 12 13 th 15 th 13th 18th 1st 12/13 13/14 14/15 15/16 16/17 17/18 18/19 19/20 20/21 21/22 saints / 43 08 / saints saints / 09 saints / 03 CONTACT US Southampton Football Club St Mary’s Stadium Britannia Road Southampton SO14 5FP Main Reception 02380 727 700 | reception@saintsfc.co.uk Supporter Services 02380 711 980 | supporterservices@saintsfc.co.uk Ticket Office 02381 780 780 | tickets@saintsfc.co.uk Stadium Store 02380 711 973 | retailhelp@saintsfc.co.uk Hospitality 02380 727 768 | hospitality@saintsfc.co.uk DIRECTORY Chief Executive Officer Martin Semmens Managing Director Toby Steele Board of Directors Martin Semmens, Chief Execuitve Officer; Toby Steele, Managing Director; Matt Crocker, Director of Football Operations; David Thomas, Chief Commercial Officer; Tim Greenwell, Chief Legal & Risk Officer; Michelle Butler, Director of HR.
