2 Program Note The music of Cuba is diverse, electric, transformative, soulful, elegant and energetic. Highly influenced by its African and European roots, Cuban music celebrates the soul and ingenuity of a nation. Timba sets to celebrate the rich musical traditions of Cuba, starting and ending in the Bembé style. The work also celebrates the Cuban timba, a genre of music rooting from the son and salsa. Music unites us, it elevates us. Music liberates us! Timba was commissioned by the fantastic Allen High School Wind Ensemble (TX), under the direction of Dr. Phillip Obado and premiered at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (2022) in Chicago, Ill. Instrumentation Piccolo Flute 1, 2 Oboe 1,2 Bassoon 1, 2 Contrabassoon Clarinet in Bb 1, 2, 3, 4 Bass Clarinet Contrabass Clarinet in Bb Alto Saxophone 1, 2 Tenor Saxophone Baritone Saxophone French Horn in F 1, 2, 3, 4 Trumpet in Bb 1, 2, 3, 4 Trombone 1, 2 Bass Trombone Euphonium 1, 2 Tuba String Bass Piano PERCUSSION Bass Drum, Coke Bottle, Jam Blocks (2), Guiro Bongos Congas Claves Cowbell Guataca Shekere *add a little bit of water to the coke bottle if the pitch is close to the cowbell or guataca.
