TYPES OF MARBLE

As a result of a mixture of rocks metamorphosing under intense pressure and heat, marble is created as a metamorphic rock. Calcite, limestone, dolomite, and serpentine are all present in these rocks. Calcium carbonate, which also contains acidic oxide, is marble's primary component. One of the oldest components of the Earth's crust is marble, which takes hundreds of eras to develop.

What Is Marble?

Calcite or dolomite are the two most common recrystallized carbonate minerals that make up the

metamorphic rock known as marble. Generally speaking, marble is not foliated, however there are

several exceptions. Although unmetamorphosed limestone is included in its use in stonemasonry, the

term "marble" in geology refers to metamorphosed limestone.

Production

The United States Geological Survey reports that domestic marble production in the United States

decreased from 72,300 tonnes valued at $18.9 million in 2005 to 46,400 tonnes valued at roughly $18.1

million in 2006. In 2006, 11.8 million tonnes of crushed marble were produced (for aggregate and

industrial uses), valued at $116 million, of which 6.5 million tonnes were finely ground calcium

carbonate and the other ten million tonnes were construction aggregate. In 2005, 7.76 million tonnes

of crushed marble were produced, valued at $58.7 million. Of that amount, 4.8 million tonnes were

composed of finely powdered calcium carbonate, with the remaining material being building

aggregate. About 1.3 million tonnes of dimension marble are needed in the US.
