Intro. Keeping the wheels turning...
OCTOBER Issue 2022
We wanna hear from you info@motomedia.co.za
Read our back issues at www.motomedia.co.za
The other day, we wandered into one
of the importers offices - and what was
on his desk?
A magazine from the 90’s. True story!
And we spent a good while chatting
about the bike industry and changes
since way back before the internet was
a thing.
Irreplaceable. Timeless. It’s not just
about selling stuff.
It’s recorded, printed South African
motorcycle history that you’ll never find
or see on the internet.
The conversation starts with “ I wonder
what happened to...”
We can’t tell you how many places
we go to - and centrespreads adorn
the kids walls and garage lockers and
doors.
True story. You can never duplicate
that with your cell phone or PC.
Anyway.
So many cool things are happening in
the world of motorcycling where South
Africans compete.
Then. Binder. Just flippen wow! Hows
that man? World class.
Two South Africans in the teams that
dominated Bold’Or - Steven Odendaal
and team won the 100th Bol D’Or.
Sheridan Morias’s team made it a
South African one-two.
Cam Petersen, broke the record at the
Barber Track in Moto America. He and
Mathew Scholtz are really flying the
flag over there.
Clint Sellar goes off to the Frohburg
road race and wins two of the races...
Team SA put up such a good fight at
the Motocross Of Nations - more on
that in next months edition of Dirt And
Trail.
Ruche Moodley is making his way
steadily up the Rookies cup ladder -
watch this kid!
At home, Brett Swanepoel is E2 and
overall National Enduro champ, Travis
Teasdale took the extreme title, Dylan
Jones is the E1 champ.
Maddy Green, what can we say? Then
there’s a certain Wade Young...
Our GS Trophy team has made it a
1, 2 for SA, sure, perhaps a bit of a
state secret to anyone outside the
BMW circle, but mighty impressive
nonetheless - and the first stand alone
competition for the girls has been won
by our ladies...
And we have probably missed some of the
talent and to you - sorry, we’ll go into more
detail for 2022 in future issues.
For such a small riding country we have
some massive talent!
2023 GasGas RX 450F Replica
Although the Dakar Rally and other rally raids are wildly
popular with fans worldwide, genuine production rally
motorcycles are few and far between. The new 2023
GasGas RX 450F Replica offers many of the goodies you
will find on Sam Sunderland’s 2022 Dakar Rally-winning
GasGas Factory Race bike.
The SOHC four-valve motor gets beefed up for the high
speeds and long distances that define rally raids. From
the top, the cylinder head is ported, there’s a Pankl
piston and connecting rod, and the DDS clutch and sixspeed
gearbox is stronger.
Akrapovič exhaust as standard ups the ante further,
along with a Hinson clutch cover.
2023 Husqvarna FS 450 Motard
The 2023 Husqvarna FS 450 arrives with significant
changes from last year’s racer.
In addition to new bodywork, the 2023 Husqvarna FS
450 gets a new frame. The hydro-formed frame is still
made of chromoly steel. The ’23 gets new geometry
designed to reduce squat on acceleration. The subframe
is a new aluminum-polyamide hybrid, which replaces the
carbon-fiber/polyamide subframe used for years, the
new subframe is more durable and has specific rigidity
properties that enhance the main frame.
The basic SOHC engine architecture remains, but
Husqvarna claims “class-leading performance and low
weight” from the mill. The exact engine placement has
also changed in the new frame.
The quickshifter gets a new sensor. According to the
Husky, the change is intended to improve upshifts—
more acceleration, again.
A new switch, mounted on the left of the ProTaper
handlebar, controls traction control, launch control,
and the quickshifter setting.
The 48mm fork is new, with a focus on increasing the
progressivity of the damping to prevent bottoming. The
air function remains, supplanting a spring. The shock
now requires no tools for damping adjustments, and the
main piston is updated.
It has three fuel tanks—one of them does double duty
as the rear subframe. When all three cavities are filled,
just on 35 litres of fuel are on board. Xplor Pro 7548
fork and Xplor Pro 7750 shock are used. The Xplor
Pro suspension line is positioned as WP Suspension’s
flagship off-road units.
X-Trig triple clamps hold the fork legs in place, and are
anodized red. A Neken handlebar is mounted to the top
clamp.
Then there’s the carbon Fibre Nav tower to house your
electronics. Brembo calipers on oversized rotors stop
the bike. The front disc is 300mm in diameter, and the
rear measures 240mm across.
The RX 450F is a limited-edition model, though we don’t
know how many are expected in SA.
chassis and motor, which means there is plenty to talk
about.
Kawasaki has focused on the intake and exhaust
systems of the 2023 KX250’s DOHC motor. The
intake duct has been straightened, and one of the
two injectors moved farther up the intake tract. The
air/fuel mixture is sent through new 1mm-narrower
intake valves with a revised pitch that is 1.5mm
narrow than last year. Further, the piston crown is
reworked for compatibility with the new intake valve
arrangement. Once the fuel is burned—the ignition
timing is advanced over last year—the spent charge
exits out a new, 100mm-longer header bike. The result
is a claimed increase in horsepower at the top end of
the rev range.
First gear and second gear are higher on the 2023
KX250. This tightens up the gearbox ratio for improved
2023 Kawasaki KX250X
Just two years old, the Kawasaki KX250X crosscountry
racer has updates. While the engine of
the 2023 Kawasaki KX250X is the prime recipient
of attention. There’s a new intake tract that is
straighter than last year. Kawasaki engineers
moved the upstream injector to the underside of
the intake, claiming it will “further contribute to
increased cylinder-filling efficiency, which adds to
peak performance.” Kawasaki reworked the intake
valves. The new intake valves are now 31mm, down
one millimeter from last year, and they have more
clearance. Kawasaki tells us that this increases
acceleration.
The KYB suspension has been fine-tuned.The fork has
new settings and oil height to give the rider a better
feel for the front end and deliver a planted feel. For
faster acceleration out of the corner, the shock gets
firmer compression damping. As always, the KYB units
have fully adjustable damping and spring preload.
Also, the new settings raise the seat height and ground
clearance by 0.4 inches.
The Dunlop Geomax MX33 on the back is now 110mm
wide—up 10mm—while the front is unchanged.
The fork cover mounting bolts, rear linkage collar, and
footpeg brackets have been changed from steel to
aluminum. Also, solid bolts in the shock linkage collar
have been swapped out for hollow fasteners. With the
wider rear tire, the final weight tally of the ’23 is just
over a pound more than last year.
The KX250 gets new footpegs that are wider and
repositioned. The new pegs are 5mm from front to
back, and moved 3mm rearward.
reliability, and the change has the same performance
results as the intake update. The 2023 Kawasaki
KX250X has a header pipe that is 100mm longer than
last year. According to Kawasaki, this will boost torque
off the bottom and into the midrange.
There’s a new clutch pushrod to lighten the clutch
pull. The hydraulic clutch and cone-style spring return.
The bottom two gear ratios have been changed for
2023. First gear is higher, and second gear is revised
to enhance the advancement from first to third gear.
New footpegs adjust the ergonomics. The new pegs
are 0.2-inches wider, and moved back a hair over 0.1
inches.
Acerbis bike protection:
We roped in the talents of Haley Hubbert who is doing
job shadowing with the aim of becoming a journalist,
to make sense of our ramblings about Acerbis latest
motorcycle protective goodies…
She says: Being in grade 11, all students are required
to job shadow a career of their choice for their life
orientation final mark. Fortunately enough for me, I did
not have to search for very long. The guys at Dirt and
Trail and RideFast Magazine’s were very welcoming, and
soon assigned me to editing all sorts of their features
– and then they gave me the project of helping to fit the
Acerbis products to a GasGas enduro bike. The reason
for this is that the Gasgas bike does not come with
much protective gear.
This resulted in a new challenge, putting on the bash
plate - and telling you guys about it.
Acerbis Bash plate:
Now I am a competitive dancer and can confidently
say I know nothing about bikes except for the fact that
people ride them. I don’t know much about how the
bikes work, but what I can easily say is that the bash
plate looks pretty groovy. What’s cool about the plate is
that it comes with a linkage guard that is not seen on
many bash plates. Acerbis makes these for most of the
most popular models. This one is made of high impact
composite plastic, which ensures that the bike is light
while still providing solid protection to the engine.
Fitment of the bash plate was really quick and simple.
Just 3 bolts. The instructions were easy to read and
informative.
It is still going to be tested out, but we will let you know
how it holds up in future editions.
I’m told that what’s interesting about the Swing-arm
something that the team has never seen before. The
magnets are held on to the swing arm with zip ties
and the guard itself is held on with some velcro tape
and removeable rubber straps. This allows the swing
arm guard to be easily removed, making the rider have
clear access to the swing arm itself in order to clean
interesting and the team looks forward to seeing how
Scorpion VX 22 on the way:
The VX-22 which brings a whole host of top-shelf
features, all in a helmet that performs as well or even
better than its predecessor.
With the recent news of helmet manufacturers being
required to shift over to the brand-new ECE 22.06
homologation, Scorpion’s new helmet is now a
22.06-homologated lid. This means that the VX-22 is
safer and up-to-date regarding the ECE’s latest call for
safety features.
The VX-22 is loaded with a ton of safety tech and
features. For the shell material, Scorpion calls it Ultra
TCT fiber, which is another way of saying that it is a
fiberglass lid with Scorpion’s special touch. Generally
speaking, fiberglass is a safer material to use than
polycarbonate. On top of that, the helmet is said to be
more aerodynamic in comparison to its predecessor.
Under the shell is a dual-density EPS liner, and
Scorpion ADX 2 incoming:
If you are a fan of off-road, on-road and adventure
activities, Scorpion has developed a helmet for you, THE
ADX-2 is a quick-change artist. It’s a modular adventure
helmet certified to ECE 22.06, with PMJ homologation
and an internal sun visor.
As a follow-up to the ADX-1, the ADX-2 features a
number of improvements to its design, comfort and
protection to be a really versatile helmet - the most
important being its certification to the latest ECE 22.06
safety regulations.
The helmet features a polycarbonate shell, with an
EPS-lined chin bar that can be switched from full-face
to open-face modes: simply push a button and raise the
chin bar over the removable sun peak. The interior of
the helmet is lined with soft Kwikwick material, which
is hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking and can be
removed and washed.
The ADX-2 has a drop-down sun visor with a MaxVision
Pinlock anti-fog visor. With a wide field of view, two
helmet sizes, and suitability for glasses wearers, the
helmet is great for a variety of riders and uses including
touring, adventure riding and dirt biking. Ready
compatible with the EXO-COM intercom system.
Imported by Henderson Racing Products and hitting
dealerships nationally now.
between the pads and the EPS sits the all-important
MIPS slip-plane safety technology. According to the
Motociclismo, the Multi-Directional Impact Protection
System was necessary for the VX-22 to receive its ECE
22.06 homologation. Essentially what it does is allow
for a level of slip between your head and your helmet to
mitigate impact forces.
Scorpion also fits the helmet with its signature cheek
pad inflation system called AirFit. The system is
simple and effective, similar to the old pump-style
enclosure system in some shoes back then. Speaking of
enclosures, you also get a double-D strap for your chin.
Finally, there are convenience features like an
enlarged eye port for a more panoramic view of your
surroundings and cutouts for eyewear. There is also a
flat section on the surface of the shell that is there for
action camera mounting.
Imported by Henderson Racing Products and hitting
dealerships nationally now.
The new KTM Adventure R was introduced to the world
at the KTM Adventure Rally in Tamarack, Idaho in front
of hundreds of KTM riders that just completed a day of
riding.
A massive player in the sub 1000cc ADV category,
KTM chose to make some updates for the new year
model. It enjoys significant updates to the suspension,
electronics and styling.
The fully adjustable WP XPLOR forks and WP XPLOR
PDS rear shock have been tuned to provide a plusher
ride but still provide the performance expected of more
aggressive riders.
The styling has also been updated with cues more
in line with the factory KTM 450 Rally bikes. The
redesigned bodywork and tank provides a sleeker
look, and improved ergonomics along with claimed
improvements in aerodynamics and wind protection.
It still features a relatively low screen and a high front
fender.
2023
KTM 890
Adventure R incoming…
The 2023 890 Adventure R includes a new 5” TFT
dash that includes USB-C connectors. It features an
entirely new look with coloured pictograms and intuitive
graphics that allow for easy navigation through the
menus. In addition, the latest upgrades include a
developed turn-by-turn-plus navigation system that
allows riders to select their preferred destination
from the bike’s menu. A new phone call-out function
also allows a favorites call option, with a maximum
of 10 numbers, or the option to call one of the 10 last
numbers called.
The updated electronics include the latest generation
Bosch ABS control unit that utilizes a 6D sensor that
measures the angle, pitch, speed and general behavior
of the motorcycle to apply the correct braking force for
given needs. It also includes an Off-Road ABS that is
an integrated part of the OFFROAD or optional RALLY
modes, so you don’t need to separately select your ABS
setting from your chosen engine settings.

Many of the optional electronic upgrades that previously had
to be purchased to try will come unlocked for the first 1500
kilometers with the new DEMO MODE. This will allow riders to
determine which features they can’t live without and choose
to only pay to unlock those when the first 1500-kilometer test
period is reached.
At a glance:
SUZUKI’S
New Adventure
Bike incoming…
2023 DL 1050 V-Strom model breaks cover…
Suzuki has had a re-think with the 2023 Suzuki V-Strom
1050DE and the V-Strom 1050DE Adventure bikes. They arrive
mid 2023…
The DEs replace the XT line of V-Strom 1050s and do it with an
eye toward, as Suzuki puts it, “exploring gravel roads and flat
dirt trails.” The Adventure version of the new Suzuki V-Strom
1050DE adds aluminum panniers and LED fog lights—the two
motorcycles are otherwise, much the same, but with lots of
significant upgrades over the current model.
21-inch front wheel: The 1050DE has spoked wheels at both
ends, and they’re shod with model-specific Dunlop Trailmax
Mixtour rubber, replacing the XT’s Bridgestone Battlax
Adventure A41. This explains the new rake and trail numbers,
and increased ground clearance and seat height. The 21-inch
front wheel gets a new front fender—it’s a three-piece setup.
Longer swingarm: With that change, the 17-inch rear wheel’s
travel is upped a bit. The linkage-assisted KYB shock retains
adjustment for rebound-damping and spring preload. The
inverted KYB 34mm forks are unchanged, maintaining full
adjustability. The new swingarm is laterally and vertically more
rigid despite its increased length.
New rear subframe: The brackets for the batter and rear fender
are beefed up, as are the seat rails. The two-position seat is
lighter and a new shape increases rigidity.
Wider handlebars: Tapered aluminum handlebar with more flex
built in.

Updated electronics package:
•Three power modes—A, B, and C—that alter the power delivery and
work with the traction control system.
•The 2023 Suzuki V-Strom 1050DE has a new Gravel traction
control setting. The new Gravel mode retards the timing to allow an
appropriate amount of rear-wheel slip under power in the dirt, and is
available in all three power modes.
•The four previous traction control modes return—1, 2, 3, and off.
•The 1050DE has mechanical and electronic transmission updates.
Suzuki engineers have raised the ratios for 1st and 6th gears to
smooth the shifting. The improved up/down quickshifter sends info
via a new shift-position sensor to the ECU so the motor is aware of
the gearchange request and can assist as needed. The clutch retains
its assist and slipper capabilities.
•New five-inch TFT screen. Suzuki says it will be legible in bright
sun, as well as at night. There are Day and Night modes, and the
brightness can be adjusted manually, or you can let the computer
run the show. There’s a powered USB port on the side to run your
smartphone or GPS unit.
•Cruise control: Electronically controlled, it can be set at your speed
choice from 15KPH to 160. The controls for the cruise control
are split between the switchgear on the right and left sides of the
handlebar.
•Lighter, smaller ABS control unit. The 1050DE’s cornering-aware
ABS works with other systems and features on the 1050DE thanks
to interaction with the IMU and ECU. Additionally, rear ABS can be
switched off for riding in the dirt.
Tiegen recently Married Tristan Purdon and
still found time to bring you all the news.
Congrats you lot!
After another break in the season, the
penultimate round of the South African
Motocross National Championship headed to
Welkom, in the Free State. The break allowed
for some competitors to travel and compete
in Finland and Uganda where the SA flag was
held high for the Junior World Championship
and Motocross of African Nations. With a
few championships still up for grabs, the
competitors, crew, and crowds knew they were
in for an interesting day of racing and it was
exciting to see if there was any room for some
championship switch ups!
Husqvarna’s Michael Docherty came in hot,
securing his first heat win in the MX1 class
since his return to South African Motocross
racing. The second heat of the MX1 race had
Docherty out front again early on in the race,
but his fitness left the door open for the points
leader, Tristan Purdon to take the top step and
claim the overall as well as maintain his points
lead.
With only 1 point separating the two top
contenders in the MX2 Championship
standings, it was going to be a tough fight for
the Red Bull KTM teammates. Cameron Durow
and Tristan Purdon were head-to-head all day,
but it was Durow who took the double win
and gained 6 points on Purdon. Purdon took
second and Joshua Mlimi, with an impressive
ride, secured his spot to round out the podium.
The 125 Highschool class seemed to be
plagued with bad luck, with a few mechanical
issues and riders having to sit out, but it was
another clean sweep by Luke Grundy who
extended his points lead and strengthened his
reigns on the championship. Tristan Durow
had a solid ride, earning his first ever national
podium in the 125 class, and he is steadily
climbing the ranks in the standings. Blake
Young turned his day around from being in
the top 5 to climbing on to the 3rd step of the
podium.
In the 85cc class, Trey Cox from the Red
Bull KTM tent had a back and forth with
Husqvarnas Neil van der Vyver, but it was van
der Vyver who bagged the overall win.
The Out of Africa Yamaha’s Aiden Henly also
earned his first podium in the class with a
spectacular ride. With 1 round to go, Cox leads
the championship by 14 points.
A stellar ride from Trent Valsecchi in the 65cc
class had him clinch his first national win.
Trenton Kretzmann followed in 2nd with Evan
Frost in 3rd. Frost still comfortably holds onto
the championship with a 21-point lead!
Rayden Woolls made his comeback after an
injury at the last round of National Motocross
in PE. He put up a good fight, that secured
the overall win, with Lou Rademeyer in second
and Riley Geldenhuys in 3rd. Rademeyer
heads into the final round 13 points ahead of
championship rival Woolls.
The Ladies’ class was led out by none other
than the #1 Kawasaki of Kayla Raaff’s. Raaff
extended her points and leads by a whopping
37 points.
Tintswalo Yamaha’s Anthony Raynard ran into
mechanical issues which saw him unable to
race the second heat of the MX3 Senior Class,

this made way for Dean Wheeler to claim the victory.
Raynard and Wheeler now head into the final round of
the season with only 2 points sepatrating them.
See who will be crowned South African Champion at the
FINAL round of the South African Motocross
Championship, anything can happen. The final round
is scheduled for Chestnut Hill Motocross Track off the
2023 KTM 300 SX
2021 KTM 300 SX
There we were running around B.O.R.C. getting ready for North vs South when the
phone rings, its multiple champ Ryan Hunt who was paging through the magazine:
“Hey Guys, this new 23 model KTM 300 SX… is it really that much better than my
2021 250 SX with all KTM Power Parts catalogue 300cc big bore kit?,”
“Uhmmm, we think so but can’t say definitively.”
“Well, do you think we can arrange a comparative test sometime?”
“For sure give us a minute or two to chat the KTM SA.”
The immediate response from KTM SA was a resounding “HELL YES!” and so we put
it all together and met a few weeks later at a new-ish MX track out in The Cradle that
Ryan enjoys riding.
We got hold of our mate Mike Wessels to join us for the day and was quite cute to watch him
go all blubbering fan boy over Ryan, his childhood hero, who he modelled his own Moto-Cross
career on and even had Ryan’s posters on his bedroom walls. Ryan has been racing MX for
around 40 years or so and has a dozen National MX Championship titles to his name, along with
a smattering of international titles, a Lifetime Achievement Award for his prowess on a MX bike
and still continues to race to this day… and if you have ever raced against him or seen him race
you will know exactly how fast he still is.
Mike is a respected local regional and national MX racer and spent a good 5 years in the Far
East as an exhibition and stunt rider before returning home to a career as a bike tester, driving
instructor and riding instructor.
So, the right guys for the job here.

A quick breakdown on the bikes.
The 2023 300 SX:
We’ve already told you about this one, but it is the absolute latest MX offering
from KTM and some key features include brand new 300cc 2 stroke
power plant with electric start, electronic fuel injection, electronic power
valve, on the fly changeable mapping.
It boasts new ergonomics with an improved rider triangle and knee
contact and even has a new front fender to help keep the mud and muck
out of the riders goggles.
A RICH HERITAGE
Ryan’s 2021 KTM 250 SX.
Well, this isn’t quite standard. First of all it is no longer a 250cc.
The KTM Power Parts catalogue was abused with everything needed to
convert it to the bigger bore 300cc 2T mill. Reliability was key when
considering the parts and thus only genuine KTM parts were used
throughout. Even the suspension has gone under the knife and that
features KTM 450 WP internals for a firmer ride and more resilient
longevity. You understand this better when you see him launch into the
stratosphere over some of the really big jumps.
Otherwise the bike is still pretty much standard apart from decal kits,
handle bend preferences, grips and such things.
The Track – ‘KL’s or Kabelo’s track’ in The Cradle of human Kind.
Not what we were expecting when we drove up the driveway, but let us tell
you where to find it exactly. Head out along the N14 towards Krugersdorp,
get off at the M5 and turn towards ‘The Cradle’, hit a left onto the R374 by
Walkhaven Dog Park and head towards Glenburn Lodge and Kloofzicht, at
the first circle hit another left into Riverside Road and a couple hundred
metres down the road you will find a non-descript and unmarked gate on
the left, go in there. Head up the gravel drive and over the hill to find MX
paradise.
It will cost you around R200.00 per bike to ride there and believe us when
we tell you it is well worth it. The track is regularly ripped and watered,
there are fresh and clean ablutions and plenty of green lawn to chill out
on. Don’t be a knob to the chap that collects the cash, English isn’t his
mother tongue and comms aren’t great, but he is a very lekker guy.
The track itself is more akin to a supercross track with huge jumps and
lots of them and it is also very tight and twisty so it will really get your
skill level up – just check out the satellite image we found of it – it is also
a photographer’s paradise.
Other than the ablutions there are no other amenities right now so take
along your own food and drinks… and again, please don’t be a knob, the
place is neat and tidy so take all your litter with you when you leave and
leave it like you found it and would like to find it.
So what did the lads have to say about the bikes?
2023 KTM 300SX EFi
Ryan:
“My first impression and what really stands out for me on the 2023 KTM
300 SX EFi is the smoothness, how the power delivery is so linear, there
is no waiting for it to come off the carb and build power. It is just there…
all of the time. That what really strikes me about this fuel injected bike,
the instantaneousness of the power.”
“I am also really surprised at how well the standard suspension held up
on a track with a lot of jumps, big jumps at that… it feels plush, even in
standard trim, these new bike suspensions are surprisingly good and I
can easily be competitive on it. Suspension set up is a bit of a black art,
what a lot of people forget is that a lot of the feedback you get you have
to understand the rider and how they ride the bike in different terrains. A
proper suspension mechanic would be out on track watching their rider
and how they react to what the suspension is doing over the terrain and
then interpret the riders feedback after the race and make adjustments
accordingly.
Spending huge money on upgrading this suspension will only make a
difference when you really want to compete at the highest level. I was
comfortable from the first lap on the new bike and pleased at how well it
soaked everything up from the start with just a few minor adjustments on
the clickers and air pressure. This suspension is good, really good. The
new bike does feel lighter, I’m not sure what the difference is in
kilograms or what it is, maybe it is a bit of moving mass or they have
moved the motor or something but it definitely feels lighter and I didn’t
have to use as much energy to get it around the track. I found little things
on the track where I didn’t have to work as hard to do the same thing I did
on my bike, it is just smoother overall somehow… and I like that.
I feel that compared to a 450 you will be able to in and out of corners
quicker and around the track faster, it doesn’t have that much moving
weight. The 300 SX is a lot more nimble.”
“Initially, when Glenn rolled in and asked, I wasn’t overly impressed. He
looked a bit confused at that.”
“Then I then discovered that I had been riding in map 1, which gave me
the same feeling as a carb bike that was jetted too lean because it ran
out of power at the top of the power band. Once I switched it to map 2
for my second session out I very nearly threw it in the back of my van to
go home with me.”
“Gee whizzzz… it is a different bike completely, map 2 turns on the
animal in the bike… so much fun. It is so difficult to choose between raw
power and smooth power, often that smoother power makes for faster
and faster lap times, it doesn’t feel as fast but when you put it on the
clock often you are going quicker and you see the difference on race
day.”
A last thought:
“Ever since KTM went to the triangle styled front fender I have never
had enough mud protection and I have been asking for a proper ‘mud’
mudguard for muddy conditions and this year I think they have done
it. When I got onto my bike the first water splash I went through I was
wiping my goggles, I went through the same mud hole earlier on the new
300 on my first session out and my goggles stayed clean so the wider
mud guard and the little fins they have put on the back of the mudguard
actually work very well, I am very impressed and that is going to be the
new upgrade on my bike, I’m going to get myself one of these fenders
and work out how to fit it.”
Mike Says:
Ryan’s Catalogue build bike is really cool. It feels really
quick and quite raw. The power delivery is not smooth
or anything near as linear through the whole range like
the new bike, and it is definitely quicker off the bottom
end. It doesn’t have a significantly noticeable difference
between the 2 maps but it does seem to have a lot more
bottom end power than the 300SX. It feels slightly
heavier, especially in the corners.”
“Ryan has been riding for a long time and has his own
set up that is comfortable to him and obviously every
rider is different in their preferences. For instance, his
bike felt a little bit softer than the new bike to me.”
The new 300:
“You can feel this is a factory built bike with smoother,
linear power delivery with a definite difference between
the 2 map settings. In map 1 when you come out of a
corner and head up a big jump it almost feels like it is
running out of puff just as you get to the top, but with
map 2 there is a huge difference and upgrade in the
power output from the engine through the same corner
and over the same jump.”
“So, in map 1 you have to approach the jump quite a bit
quicker and not rely on the power as much to get over.
Exactly as Ryan described it, map 1 feels a little bit like
a carb bike that is running too lean and almost feels like
it is bogging at the top. You don’t really pick it up at the
long, wide open faster tracks, but you definitely feel it on
the tighter more technical tracks where you are relying
on a lot of horsepower. “Map 2 revs out further and
longer giving you more power at the top of the rev range.
The maps are day and night apart on this bike. These
new bikes are just so sorted out and fine-tuned with the
suspension being a bit firmer than the older bike but
better at soaking up the impacts.”
“In my opinion, the new 300 is not just aimed at the
professional racer but also at the weekend warrior. Now
you can keep up with the 450’s on your 2 stroke and you
don’t have to worry about valves and shims and all those
other bits. I think it is going to make a lot of sense and,
hopefully bring more and more people into the sport.
This bike will hang with a 450 if you wind it around a
track, it is that impressive. The power is useable,
predictable and smooth unlike the two strokes of old
where they are nothing and then suddenly all the power
arrives in one big bundle. This bike also feels a lot more
agile than any 450 I have ridden feeling a lot quicker to
lay it down in a corner it doesn’t have the weight behind
it to drive the directional forward momentum.”
In the final summation
Both our riders agree that if you have the means, get the
new bike.
All the new technology in the bike makes it faster, lighter,
more energy efficient on the rider and will definitely cut
chunks out of your lap times.
However, if you have a 250 two-stroke, are on a budget
and have to have to refresh your motor anyway it makes
complete sense to rebuild it up to a 300cc with stock
parts from KTM’s Power Parts catalogue to race the MX
1 class.
You will have a very fast, competitive bike and it will be
reliable as standard.
See, KTM doesn’t only cater for new bike purchasers but
for all their customers.
Team SA Makes History...
South Africa wins the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2022.
Again.
The Ladies team wins the first-ever Women’s GS Trophy.
The BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2022 roared
into Albania on September 4 and included 57 riders from 21
international teams.
In the gents division, South Africa was represented by Gerrit Du
Toit, Dalton de Bruin and Warren Venter. Ladies were represented
by Christelle van der Meulen and Hanneli Zondagh. The team from
Counry Trax Off road Academy were tasked with selecting and
preparing the teams.
In the ladies division, six countries sent teams. The men’s event
saw fifteen teams take part.
Where the heck is Albania?
Albania is a small country on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern
Europe with a coastline at the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea in
west (both portions of the Mediterranean Sea). It is bordered by
Montenegro in north, Serbia (Kosovo) in north east, the Republic of
Macedonia in east, and Greece in south east. Albania shares also
maritime borders with Croatia and Italy.
After 1,230km of hard adventure riding, and 15 special tests The GS
Trophy champions have been crowned, and it’s Team South Africa
who has done a double – winning both the male and female team
competitions.
Here’s a rundown of how the event works and what the teams got to
experience.

DAY 1: Kavaja to Berat.
Team UK leads.
Competitors arrived in the city of Kavaja, on the Adriatic Sea in the
southeastern European country of Albania. The first job Twas to
load all of the other teams’ luggage on the support trucks, a duty
that all teams undertook during the course of the event
After a short ride along the coast, the first special test awaited
competitors: a small course on the side of a hill. Tight turns in a
confined arena tested the team’s balance and control, but it wasn’t
the riding skills were being tested out of the gate; it was a mental
lapse in listening to the rules. The marshals gave the parameters
only once. If riders did not pay attention, it was at their peril.
After a 135-km ride towards the center of the country, the second
special test was held just before lunch in a river wash deep in
a valley. This was a pure time test with a more open layout that
crossed a small river and challenged the teams with round river
rocks and soft sand.
Team UK completed a clean sweep on the day with another first
and 25 points. That night camp was in the center of a spectacular
castle in Berat.
Day 2: Berat to Lake Ohrid.
The GS Trophy campsite began stirring before the squirrels were
up, keen to get back out on the trails to take onthe special tests.
Before leaving the castle, the front tyre on one bike from each team
was deflated for the Metzeler Tyre Challenge.
The task: Push the bike down to a work area, remove the front tyre,
run to a compressor, refill the tyre to exactly 2 bar, and reinstall.
Points were deducted for mechanical mistakes.
The ride on day two rose and fell from mountain top to valley floor
over and over again. It was jaw droppingly beautiful.
This is the real reason for GS Trophy, a reward for the hard work put
in by each and every competitor. A once in a lifetime riding trip with
a competition tossed in for good measure.
The afternoon saw the Akropovic Challenge, another special course
layout on a grass hillside that focused on time with no mistakes.
Team Thailand moved into the lead with a toal of 66 points.
A quick swim in Lake Ohrid, Albanias deepest lake (Lake Ohrid)
was a perfect end to the day.
Day 4 saw 3 tests:
The first test was the Farma Sotira Trail Relay: The test required each
teammate to ride a section of an extended trials course. One rider criss
crossed and navigated the banks of a stream. The next rider tackled
some full-lock turns and crossed a log before tagging the last rider to
snake through a slalom.
Next was the Navigation Challenge: Teams had to use a BMW GS
navigation unit to find a point in the forest, enter a new waypoint, and then
get back to the start on foot.
Then it was time for the Albania Slow Race: Riders went as slowly as
they can down a one-meter-wide lane. The combined times of the three
teammates count against the other teams, with penalties for crossing the
lines, dabs, and drops.
On day 4, Team UK was back in front, just one point ahead of Team South
Africa...
Day 5: Farma Sotira to Himare:
Day 5 took the teams west, back to the Adriatic Sea wher they finished on
a beach camp near Himare.
Twenty minutes in, the first test awaited: The Sena Motoball Trail.
Riders took on a trials course during which, they had to try and bang a
soccer ball into a small goal. But, there was a catch. No kicking. The
riders had to use the rear wheel to smack the ball through the posts.
From there, the riders meandered their way over the Pindus mountains,
through hairpin turns on the tar, down into canyon gorges, and up some
spectacular rocky twee spoor trails over mountain passes.
The Sheer cliffs are simply spectacular. After a 200 km journey,
competitors were greeted by , beautiful blue waters.
But there was no time for loafing. A second special test was waiting: The
SUP Water Showdown.
This was another relay, but not on the bikes.
Day 3: Lake Ohrid to Farma Sotira.
The teams rode into the the hills above Lake Ohrid and South
towards the nothern border of Greece.
It was soon time for the first special test, The Advantec challenge.
Riders entered a 15m by 15m box through a small gate. The first
rider was handed a bottle of Advantec oil. This had to be passed
to the second and then third rider before exiting the box though
another small gate. Dabs and dropped bikes were penalized. Worse
still, dropping the challenge sponsor’s product was an even greater
sin...
Then it was time to ride. Steep rock climbs to mountain pastures
led to even steeper descents, with just as many rocks mixed with
deep rain ruts. Then a deep water crossing challenged all comers,
Muddy ruts and pools became deeper and slicker as the the trail
climbed into the mountains. The pace was quick. Ahead, the
second special test of the day, the Leatt Enduro Trophy, waited.
This was an enduro style loop around a rocky outcrop. From there
it was a quick ride to Farma Sotira for some chill time and bench
racing.
Day 4: Farma Sotira Loop.
Day 4 of the GS Trophy was the only day when the competitors
didn’t have to pack up their tents, load up and get going. Everyone
was happy about that, less graft for the day and the hospitality
enjoyed at Farma Sotira is unbelievable, despite the fact that the
cows wandered through the campsite and woke everyone up at
3am....
The mornings loop into the mountains was all smiles: Technical,
steep and rocky.
Cozzies were the required equipment.
Rider 1 ran a BMW tank bag down to rider 2 who was waiting on a
paddleboard. Once the cargo was secured, Rider 2 made his or her way
out to a buoy, took a u-turn and headed back to the beach where rider 3
waited to take the bag.
The last rider then ran back up the beach to the finish.
At the end of the day, the scores were calculated:
Teams UK and South Africa were tied for first with 149 points, Team
Germany was third with 138...
Day 6: Himare to Kavaja:
This was a point-to-point ride as teams rode a circle back to the starting
point at the beach.
Rider headed straight into the mountains from Himare’s beach resort
and were greeted by the now familiar rocks and dust of the Albanian
countryside.
Just 30 minutes from the start was the BMW Motorrad ConnectedRide
Com U1 Challenge.
One rider had to ride cones blindfolded with the assistance of the other
two teammates calling out directions over the headset. The rider was
allowed to dab and stop as much as he wanted, but the other two also
had to ride while directing their sightless teammate. For them, dabs and
drops meant big penalties.
Team France were boss! They got their first win and a full 25 points.
The route to lunch was a mixup of mixture of tar and gravel, but nothing
technical.
Then it was time for the days second special test Hosted in a third
century stadium that was used by both the Romans and the Greeks, it
was a strongman style event.
The riders Used a rope to pull a 3.5-ton Ineos Grenadier truck the length
of the stadium, on foot.
A saffers are a tough bunch. Day six saw Team France in third. Secondplace
Team UK with 175 points; And Team South Africa took the lead
with 179.
Day 7 and Team SA are champions - again!
On the last day, sportive Directors Chris Zimmermann and Tom
Weinmayr put together a highly technical loop using some of the best
trails in the area that was designed to give the GS riders one last test of
their trail skills.
The route included a succession of fantastic hill climbs and descents
on tracks that challenged the riders with a labyrinth of super-deep rain
channels, ruts, steps and cambers. Between the hills came a succession
of river crossings. The water level might have been low, but the banks
and rocky riverbeds were still challenging. It was all pretty technical and
quite hard work. Riders had to select their line and commit, again and
again - and if they made a mistake... It was terrific riding, great fun.
Once back at base camp it was time to prepare for the afternoon’s super
test – the final throw of the dice in the 2022 GS Trophy.
Running along the length of the beach was a taped course that was part
enduro, part trial. The riders started from the bike compound and had
to fight their way through a series of zig-zags between the trees on the
shoreline through deep sand. Then followed a blast up and down the
beach itself, first on the sand, then over sea-weathered rocks where the
waterline had narrowed the course to barely a bikes width. One mistake
here and you were in the water. Luckily not more than knee deep!
The test concluded with a super-tight ‘garage’ section under a pergola
where the riders needed to execute repeated full lock turns on sand and
over more rocks, before hopping down onto the beach again for another
blast in the deep sand before returning to the bike compound.
The ladies teams rode the super test first and possibly had the harder
time of it as they wore the lines in. The heat and humidity on the beach
was hectic. All the female teams completed the course. Here, the
surprise of the day was when Team South Africa’s diminutive Christelle
Van Der Meulen, having buried her R 1250 GS in a deep rut, somehow
singlehandedly lifted the rear wheel clean out unaided. That’s a good
200 kilos!
Clearly, it’s not just the South African boys that are tuff!
Christelle’s effort proved pivotal as the South
Africans made the best run of the female teams,
ahead of Germany and Latin America. The boys
put in a solid, conservative ride to place third,
leaving the door open for Latin America to take
the full haul of double points, ahead of Mexico.
Significantly, South Africa’s nearest challengers,
Teams UK and Germany placed fourth and fifth
respectively.
The last day was also when the results came in for
the photo and video challenges.
During the week, the teams were challenged to
submit their most creative photo and a oneminute
video based on their week of adventure.
These were voted on both by the public and
the teams themselves. Team Japan revealed a
creative streak exceeding all others in the male
competition, while Team Germany had the run on
the female competitors.
When the scores were tallied up it was Team
South Africa on top, for the fourth consecutive GS
Trophy.
Team UK came closest to unsettling the South
Africans but readily and respectfully conceded
they’d been beaten by the better team. Team
Germany took a well-earned third place.
The ladies competition couldn’t have finished any
closer with just one point separating Team South
Africa from runner-up Germany.
With teams receiving points deductions for bike
damages such as broken indicators and lever
replacements, both teams had been nervously
adding up their gains and losses, but it fell to
South Africa to win the first female GS Trophy
competition and secure the double.
Brlliant work! Well done.
Warren Venter, Team South Africa: “This is
amazing, we didn’t expect this, last night we were
doing the numbers and we knew it wasn’t a certain
thing. It came down to the last challenge. So
we are really stoked. And to take the fourth win
is great, there was that pressure not to be ‘that’
team – the one’s who didn’t win – but we said to
ourselves we’ll do the best we can and whatever
comes up, comes up. Also, we want to thank
everyone who’s supported us back at home, they
really help make this happen.”
Hanneli Zondagh, Team South Africa: “It’s
unbelievable. We were only leading Germany by
one point yesterday and we didn’t have the best
last stage so until the result was announced we
didn’t know which way it had gone, but somehow
we still kept that one point advantage, I feel
truly blessed. It just shows what teamwork can
do if you just don’t give up. It’s been a great
competition, we’ve really enjoyed our times with
the other female teams, they’ve been incredible,
and so much fun. And what a great thing to do;
once women have been exposed to this great
sport and pastime of adventure motorcycling they
see how fantastic it is, how liberating, that you
ride, you see the world, you meet new people, see
different places, even in your own country. It’s a
wonderful thing.”

Lockdown and Covid
laws changed things.
It made people re-think events and adventures - aiming at local, rather than
international.
One event that changed is the annual Tri-Nations ride that used to go
through Eswatini and end in Ponta Do Oura in Mozambique.
Change is good. This year - no borders and local establishments benefited
from the huge group that undertook the journey that ended in Sodwana.
An awesome event. A great ride that takes people to places that they would
never see - unless you ride a dirtbike. From the bustling metropolis of
Pongola all the way to the Seaside.
It was excellent.
See you next year?
Trax And Trail Funduro 4 hits Madidaba...
This was the fourth rendition of the Trax And Trail Funduro series in Gauteng,
a fun series designed to test riders and machines without being impossible to
ride.
The entries tell the story, it grows with every event with riders getting better
and better every time they participate.
It’s all about competing against yourself, or your buddies and getting as many
laps as you can in, either as an “Ysterman” or as part of a team.
It was hot, dryt and dusty so there was much sweating as the guys and girls
took on the 20KM route.
A few talented riders managed 8 laps - and some only did a lap or two, but
big smiles all around and a lekker prizegiving at the end where riders were
awarded custom made trophies, medals and prizes.
Watch this space. The next one happens soon!
CR250 BUILD…
Lockdown did lots of people a favour. Suddenly
there was time to catch up on all those projects
that had been put off for so long….
This CR250 is one such project.
Sollie Grimsdell discovered this bike lying in
pieces in someone’s shed. The idea was to get
it sorted and rideable – but as things go, he
decided to undertake a factory rebuild.
For this, he roped in the services of David
Smith, an engineer who is responsible for
many of the locally manufactured aftermarket
parts for ATV’s and dirt bikes.
Upon inspection, the guys realized that there
was a lot needed for the bike – things like
radiators that were beyond repair.
A basket case in every sense of the word.
Sollie saw a pic of a rebuild and decided that a
cool project was born. The decision was made
to rebuild from scratch.
Motor:
The parts were stripped down, cleaned and all
of the original nuts and bolts were re chromed.
Missing bits were sourced and ordered from
local and international suppliers.
The casings were sent in for Cerakoting.
The clutch basket was replaced and new
plates fitted.
Every bearing, gasket, etc was replaced and
the engine was built with a Wiseco high
Compression piston.
The guys imported a brand new 38ml Kei Hin
carb.
Chassis:
New wheels were sourced – front and rear,
Excel units.
The hubs were stripped and reconditioned.
No wheel spacers were available – so David
machined new spacers out of bronze.
New Dunlop rubber was fitted.
The front shocks were shot. Complete
stripdown, guncoat and rebuild. The bottom
clicker mechanism was destroyed… David
actually
machined new replacement parts from
Stainless for the forks.
Looks great!
The frame, swing arm and triple clamps were
guncoated and overhauled.
The brake calipers were overhauled and new oversize
discs and pads were fitted. They could not find an
CR250 rear brake pedal, so they sourced a 450’s
system and machined it all to fit.
Renthal bars, Pro Taper Grips, Torque 1 levers and lots
of bling spacers and so-on from manufacturers like
Tusk.
New footpegs, braided brake lines, new radiator, chain,
sprockets and a new seat completed the package.
Parts and repairs made in-house:
The mounting points on the sub-frame were shot, it
needed a complete repair.
The Cylinder head was stripped, so the guys had to
machine new bolt holes and locators.
David did not have all of the tools for the job, so he had
to manufacture some of them like the bearing puller.
They managed to source a new body kit, but bits like
the air box needed to be refurbished in-house.
The custom sticker kit is by Hond Racing.
Final word:
Flippen spectacular!
One of the neatest dirtbike builds we’ve seen in a while.
And they tell us that she goes as good as she looks.
The bike is for sale – and David will take on selected
projects.
radiators
Machined head
Home made bearing press
The engine was in a thousand pieces and
contained more silicone than Pam Andersons
assets.
The original pipe was flat – so the guys
imported a brand new FMF pipe. They had to
make a new flange for the header.
The rear shock was also collapsed. Davis sent
it to ARXX for a complete overhaul. While that
was going on, they cerakoted the rear spring.
GAME DRIVE BREAKFAST RUN
The trip took roughly two hours all in
Go
West...
A couple of weekends back, we
were invited along to a “Breakfast
Run with a difference”, by Alec
Roller and the crew from Honda
Wing West Rand.
“We are going to ride through a game reserve
with the guys from ADA where we’ll see Giraffe
and kudu and stuff.”
Sounded pretty cool to us - so before the
sparrows were chirping, we hit the road to
Pelindaba to meet up with the guys.
The Lion and Safari Park offers access to
motorcycles once a month.
It’s a lekker little ride - 12 KM’s or so through
the park, with a guide who tells you all sorts of
stuff at the two or three stops that you make
along the way.
Its all slow and chilled - and bike numbers
are limited to around 20 or so, so that you
don’t send the car guys scuttling off into the
distance.
A nice touch is the fact that pillions and non
riders are welcome to join - they can hop on
to one of the game drive vehicles and follow
along.
We do live in a beautiful place. Every time we
have run the Pelindaba road it’s at Mach 4
rushing to get to the dam for a nibble.
This time, we actually got to see how pretty it
all is just inside the koppies - and you get to
learn a bit about hyaenas and lions and things
like that.
And the news for the park is good.
After lockdown it was bought by a local
businessman.
His intention is to buy some of the surrounding
farms and open it all up into a bigger game
reserve, where the lions and Hyenas can take
care of any potential poachers or slow BMW
riders.
For now, your safe. They are snugly fenced in
and its cool to stop off and check them out.

HAWS Bikers Breakfast Run – Harties
area, 16 October.
HAWS does great work in Harties area. That
might sound bad when said out loud, or when
you tell your wife you gave money to HAWS, but
it is true.
The Hartbeespoort Animal Welfare Society looks
after abandoned and mistreated animals in
the Hartbeespoort area, giving many a second
chance when life looked bleached for them.
The Rotary Club of Brits/Hartbeespoort is
arranging the HAWS Bikers Breakfast Run on
Sunday, 16 October, and requires everyone to
simply go on a breakfast run to Harties, like
many people do every weekend, except take a tin
of dog or cat food for the poor animals of HAWS.
There are 12 popular venues taking part:
– Upperdeck
– Barbados
– Chameleon village
– V8 roadhouse
– Femsus
– Vovo Telo
– French Toast
– Lu’s Pub
– Wimpy
– Fisherman’s Deck
– Plaas se gat
– Van Gaalen
Each will have a box to place your tins and a
member of Rotary on hand to answer questions
and take any cash donations. Also, venues will
be offering breakfast specials for bikers giving
donations.
