chegada do Natal é celebrada,
festiva. A partir dessa altura surgem as
coloridas decorações e iluminações, não
só na capital, mas também nos restantes
concelhos.
É no Funchal, no coração da cidade,
onde são criadas as melhores condições
para a grande vivência do Natal, mais
precisamente na Placa Central da Avenida
Arriaga. Prova disso é o facto da Madeira
se posicionar entre os melhores mercados
natalícios da Europa, para a European Best
Destinations.
Todos os dias são recheados com
atuações de vários grupos, que animam
o espaço, entre bandas filarmónicas,
folclore e concertos. As barracas,
cuidadosamente organizadas e decoradas,
dão cor e aconchego, onde a gastronomia
regional da época natalícia marca sempre
presença. Este é o ponto de encontro de
todos os madeirenses e visitantes.
No Largo da Restauração é
recriada a Aldeia Etnográfica, onde são
representadas várias tradições regionais
e incluído um grande presépio de Natal

tipicamente madeirense.
Ainda no Funchal, a ‘Noite do
Mercado’, festejada a 23 de dezembro,
também sobressai nas festividades,
concentrando grande afluência da
população.
Numa outra vertente, as Missas do
Funchal e Porto Santo.

Municipal.
As Festas de Natal e Ano Novo
terminam oficialmente no dia 8 de
janeiro.
Para o ano há mais!
he Christmas season is one big
T celebration on the Island and for
that reason many visitors choose
to spend the holidays right here with us
and revel in all the joy.
The first day of December, known as
the “month of the Feast” by the locals,
officially opens the festive season. This is
when the colourful decorations and lights
1
are displayed all over the Island.
It is in the heart of the Capital that
the best features for a grand Christmas
experience are created, more precisely
in the Central Square of Avenida Arriaga.
The proof of this is the fact that Madeira
is ranked among the best Christmas
markets in Europe by the European Best
Destinations.
Daily performances by various groups,
including philharmonic bands, folklore
groups and concerts liven up the avenue
alongside the carefully organised and
decorated stalls, where the regional
cuisine of the Christmas season is ever
present. This is the main meeting point for
Madeirans and visitors alike.
In Largo da Restauração, a unique
nativity scene representing the rugged
landscape of the Island called the
Ethnographic Village is recreated. In this
life-like village various regional traditions
are represented and a large typical
Madeiran Christmas crib is present.
Still in Funchal, the ‘Noite do Mercado’
(market night), celebrated on the 23rd
of December, is another highlight of the
festivities, attracting a large number of
visitors.
On a different note, the “missas
do parto” (birth masses) hold a special
significance. Celebrated between the
16th and 24th of December throughout
the churches and parishes of the island,
these masses reflect the strong religious
traditions of the season.
On the stroke of midnight on the 31st of
December, the world renowned Fireworks
Display is the highlight of the festivities.
Besides being a great experience for
residents the display attracts visitors from
the four corners of the globe who are eager
to watch the mesmerizing display, which
was considered as the world’s biggest, in
2006 by the Guinness Book of Records.
For about 8 minutes, all eyes are
drawn to the sky to watch the dynamic
pyrotechnic effects. In all, there are 59
firework displays throughout Funchal and
Porto Santo.
The month of festivities does not
end with the farewell to the “old year”
as the celebrations continue until the
Epiphany known here as “Singing of the
Kings”, on the 5th of January, celebrated
with a concert in the Municipal Garden
Auditorium.
The Christmas and New Year
celebrations officially end on the 8th of
January.
There’s more next year!

“lapinha”
Um Presépio Tipicamente Madeirense
A Typical Madeiran Nativity Scene
oferta. No cimo da escada é colocada a
imagem do Menino Jesus e, ao longo do
restante espaço, frutos secos (castanhas
e nozes) e fruta da época (tangerina,
maçã, laranjas, entre outros). Os restantes
degraus são preenchidos com pastores,
searinhas de trigo, “cabrinhas” (Feto-doscarvalhos
- Davallia canariensis) e até
lamparinas de azeite.
A palavra “lapinha” advém do
madeira). Para dar o aspeto de uma rocha,
o papel vai sendo moldado conforme os
volumes que são encaixados por baixo
para que represente montanhas, vales e
fajãs. A gruta, que normalmente está em
destaque, é o elemento mais importante
de toda a “maquete” da ilha, já que é lá o
abrigo das principais figuras religiosas
de todo o presépio: Menino Jesus,
Maria, José, Reis Magos e os animais
(normalmente a vaca e o burro).
Para que se pareça mesmo com uma
aldeia, colocam-se figuras de presépio
(pastores e pastoras com o gado à
sua volta), casas e igrejas, pequenos
caminhos, e até lagos, cascatas e levadas.
Tal como na “lapinha” estão presentes
as searinhas de trigo, as “cabrinhas”,
assim como outros elementos opcionais
segundo o gosto pessoal do autor da
“lapinha”.
apinha” is the name given to the
“L traditional Madeiran nativity
scene. However, two distinct
versions can be found in homes: the
“escadinha” and the “rochinha”.
The “escadinha” consists of building a
small altar on a firm base (usually on top
of a small table or chest of drawers), with
about three to five steps lined with gift
paper (resembling a pyramid). At the top of
the stairs, is a figurine of the Baby Jesus,
and along the rest of the steps are dried
fruit (chestnuts and nuts) and seasonal
fruit (tangerines, apples, oranges, among
others). The remaining steps are filled
with shepherd figurines, wheat seedlings,
“cabrinhas” (hare’s-foot fern - Davallia
canariensis) and even oil lamps.
The word “lapinha” comes from the
diminutive “lapa”, which means cave.
Now, the “rochinha” is nothing more than
a miniature representation of the island’s
rock formation, with a cave where the
Baby Jesus lies in the manger. It is made of
brown paper, painted brown with viochene
(a product used to darken wood). To give
the appearance of a rock, the paper is
moulded around objects that are fitted
underneath to represent mountains, valleys
and fajãs. The grotto, which is normally
highlighted, is the most important element
of the whole “mock-up” of the island, since
it is there that the main religious figures of
the whole nativity scene are housed: Baby
Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the Wise Men and the
animals (usually the cow and the donkey).
To make it look like a village, nativity
scene figures are placed (shepherds and
shepherdesses with their cattle around
them), houses and churches, small
paths, and even lakes, waterfalls and
levadas (water channels). Just as in the
“escadinha”, there are wheat seedlings,
“cabrinhas”, as well as other optional
elements according to the personal taste
of the creator.
The Madeiran nativity scene has the
gift of representing the beauty of the island
and the soul of those who live there.

todas as espécies selvagens do planeta
correm o risco de extinção nas próximas
décadas? Por esse motivo, alertar e

World Wildlife Conservation Day
Celebrated annually on the 4th of
December, this commemorative date was
created in 2012 in the United States to
reflect on and stop the daily annihilation
of thousands of animals, be it for their fur
or meat.
Similarly, this date highlights
the importance of conservation and
protection of all types of wildlife, whether
in fauna or flora.
Did you know that almost a quarter
of all wild species on the planet are
at risk of extinction in the coming
decades? For this reason, alerting and
raising awareness of the protection
and preservation of biodiversity is
increasingly important and Rede Natura

Largo Conselheiro
Aires de Ornelas
Largo da Achada
Conselheiro Aires de
Ornelas Square
C
futebol.
Na época era comum a presença de
ingleses quer na Camacha, quer em Santo
António da Serra, julga-se que devido
ao clima semelhante ao das suas raízes.
A história relata que a ideia surgiu do
pioneiro inglês Harry Hinton que na época
estudava em Londres, de onde trouxe a
bola.
Portugal, criado pelas mãos do escultor
autoria do escultor Anjos Teixeira.
Nas imediações está localizada a Casa
do Povo da Camacha, nascida em 1937,
imprescindível para o desenvolvimento de
atividades sócio culturais e desportivas na
freguesia.
E porque o Largo da Achada constitui
o epicentro de várias atividades da
localidade, o Mercadinho da Camacha
também marca presença neste espaço.
Inaugurado em 2018, é curioso pela sua
estrutura contemporânea em betão
armado, organizado por 13 espaços que
vendem produtos agrícolas e artesanais.
Em tempos, frente ao Largo,
encontrava-se a histórica fábrica de
vimes situada no Café Relógio que
outrora encerrou. Antigo ex-libris da
freguesia no que concerne à arte do
artesanato com vimes.
Os espaços ajardinados dão vida.
Rodeados pela calçada de calhau
rolado típico, ornamentam o lugar
onde habitam várias espécies de
rododendros, camélias, magnólias e
plantas endémicas como os gerânios da
Madeira e os Massarocos da Serra.
No ano de 2021 este espaço foi alvo
de obras de requalificação.
n 1875, in the parish of Camacha,
I this square, popularly known
as Largo da Achada, was the
first place in Portugal where football
was played. It was influenced by some
Englishmen who gathered in the square
and started a football match.
At the time it was common to see
Englishmen both in Camacha and in Santo
António da Serra, presumably because of
the climate similar to that of their roots.
History tells us that the idea came from
the English pioneer Harry Hinton who at the
time was studying in London, from where he
brought the ball.
Thus, in 1969, a monument alluding
to the event was created by the Madeiran
sculptor Amândio de Sousa and placed in
the square as was the bust of the Counsellor
Aires de Ornelas, 1st Lord of Dornelas and
Caniço and 15th Lord of Morgado do Caniço,
by the sculptor Anjos Teixeira.
The Camacha People’s House, founded
in 1937, is located nearby and is essential
for the development of socio-cultural and
sports activities in the parish.
As Largo da Achada is the epicentre of
various activities in the village, the Camacha
Farmers Market is also located here. Opened
in 2018, it stands out for its contemporary
structure in reinforced concrete, arranged
into 13 stalls selling agricultural and
handicraft products.
There was a historic wicker factory
located in the Café Relógio that is now
closed. An ex-libris of the parish regarding
the art of wickerwork craftsmanship.
The garden spaces give life. Surrounded
by the typical pebble stone pavement, they
adorn the village, which is home to several
species of rhododendrons, camellias,
magnolias and endemic plants such as
Madeira geraniums and Massarocos da
Serra.
In 2021, this space was the target of
redevelopment works.

visibilidade.

vista. Sabe-se que se está no sítio certo
quando se encontra a Capela de Nossa

a que este seja conhecido também por
miradouro da Boa Morte.
É aí que a aventura começa, sendo
necessário percorrer uma vereda
de cerca de 250 metros para “pisar”
oficialmente o miradouro.
Uma vez lá chegado, o visitante está
a uma altitude de aproximadamente
400 metros. A vista é panorâmica de

Corre Caminhos é uma ave
o endémica da Macaronésia
da Madeira e das Canárias.
A subespécie Anthus berthelotii
berthelottii pode ser encontrada nas
Canárias e nas Selvagens, enquanto
que, a subespécie Anthus berthelotii
madeirensis existe exclusivamente na
Ilha da Madeira, Porto Santo e Desertas.
Ambas são fáceis de distinguir pelo
tamanho do bico já que a subespécie
do arquipélago madeirense tem um
bico muito mais longo, porém, a sua
plumagem é idêntica à subespécie
que habita as Canárias. Atinge
Herodes.
Esta espécie está protegida pelo
Parque Natural da Madeira, pela Reserva
Natural das Ilhas Desertas, pela Reserva
Natural das Ilhas Selvagens, pela Rede
Natura 2000 e pela Convenção de Berna
(anexo II).
he Berthelot’s Pipit is an
T endemic bird of Macronesia,
from Madeira and the Canary
Islands. The subspecies Anthus berthelotii
berthelottii inhabits the Canaries and the
Selvagens Islands, while the subspecies
Anthus berthelotii madeirensis lives
exclusively in the Madeira archipelago.
Both are easy enough to distinguish
by the size of the bill. The Madeiran
subspecies has a much longer bill, but its
plumage is identical to that of the Canary
subspecies. It is approximately 15 to 17
centimetres in length and feeds mainly on
insects.
The name ‘Corre Caminhos’ (road
runner) comes from the fact that this bird
walks and runs almost more than it flys,
only taking off when it feels threatened.
It can be spotted both by the sea and at
altitudes of 1800 metres.
Its preferred habitat is arid ground
covered with little vegetation where it
also nests, with one or two breeding
periods in which 3 to 5 eggs are hatched.
In Porto Santo it is known as Bica
where as in Madeira they are also called
“Melro de Nossa Senhora” (Our Lady’s
Blackbird), due to the legend that this bird
followed the Holy Family in their escape
from the Holy Land to Egypt, with the task
of cleaning their footprints in the sand to
avoid being followed by King Herod.
This species is protected by the
Madeira Natural Park, the Desertas Islands

Azevinho
Holly
Ilex canariensis
Nome Comum: azevinhomanso;
azevinho-da-rocha
Família: Aquifoliaceae
Origem: Ilha da Madeira e Canárias
o longo das serras da Madeira,
A especialmente nas zonas
mais baixas da costa Norte
da Laurissilva, floresce o azevinho
madeirense.
vermelhos no outono e no inverno. Para
além disso, algumas árvores originam
drupas globosas (tipo de fruto com
apenas uma semente) e outras frutos
elipsoidais, o que faz crer que existam
duas variedades.
A casca do tronco desta pequena
árvore reúne propriedades cicatrizantes
e, ao longo dos tempos, foi muito
utilizada em peças de marcenaria.
O azevinho simboliza a época
natalícia, sendo os seus ramos muito
utilizados nas decorações da época
devido aos seus frutos avermelhados.
his endemic Holly flourishes
T throughout the Laurissilva
forest, particularly on the lower
slopes of the north coast.
It is known as the Small-leaved Holly
because its ovate-lanceolate leaves
do not have thorns around them, as is
the case with other distinct species.
Considered a shrub or a small tree, it is
very easy to identify. It is small, rarely
exceeding 5 metres in height, and its
trunk is greyish and has smooth bark.
Flowering occurs during May and
June, when the small, discreet flowers
with white petals appear.
This endemic species of
Macaronesia has an interesting
particularity: it is dioecious, which
means that only plants with female
flowers produce red fruit during autumn
and winter. In addition, some trees
produce round drupes (stone fruit) while
others ellipsoidal fruits, which leads us
to believe that there are two varieties of
the species.
The bark of this small tree has
healing properties and, throughout the
ages, has been used for woodwork.
Holly symbolizes the Christmas
season, and its branches are widely
used in Christmas decorations because
of their reddish fruits.

O Ciclo de Vida da
CASTANHA
The Life Cycle of the
Chestnut
tenha distribuído pelas freguesias do
pertencentes, a espécie do castanheiro
que se desenvolveu a partir daí.
Hoje, este fruto seco é tratado
no “Centro de Processamento da
Castanha da Madeira”, localizado na
freguesia do Curral das Freiras, onde a
magia acontece. Possui uma linha de
esterilização, um secador de castanhas,
uma máquina descascadora e um
moinho.
Sendo o castanheiro e a produção
dos seus frutos tão abundante nesta
zona, há duas décadas foi criada a
“Festa da Castanha” e desde então
é celebrada anualmente, no dia 1 de
novembro. Desde a sua existência que
conquistou lugar nos cartazes mais
famosos e tradicionais da ilha, atraindo
muitos visitantes residentes e turistas.
1º Colheita
Nos castanheiros madeirenses, em
condições climáticas normais, a queda

2º Pós-Colheita
O segundo passo é o processo
pós colheita por onde todas as
castanhas têm de passar logo após
serem colhidas e antes de serem
comercializadas. No arquipélago, esta
etapa é feita também manualmente,
consistindo numa pré-seleção
segundo o tamanho e qualidade de
cada fruto. Depois, são embalados em
sacos de malha plástica que atingem
sempre os 10 ou mais kilos e são
reencaminhadas para o Centro de
Processamento da Castanha do Curral
das Freiras.
4º Calibragem
É um processo mecânico feito por
calibradores que consiste na separação
e seleção das castanhas segundo o
seu tamanho. À chegada ao Centro de
Processamento, as castanhas são pesadas
e separadas em 3 calibres. O critério do
acondicionamento e embalagem.
6º transformação
Graças à transformação, a castanha
adquire uma durabilidade maior
permitindo aos consumidores a sua
utilidade durante muito mais tempo. É
este processo que faz com que, apesar
da sazonalidade do fruto, este seja
possível ser diversificado ao longo do
ano, nos produtos que dele advêm.
As castanhas podem ser entregues
aos produtores inteiras ou peladas na
máquina descascadora no Centro de
Processamento. Podem ser também
comercializadas em pão de farinha de
castanha; como fruto seco, sendo que
o fruto hidratado é fundamental na
tradicional Sopa de Castanha do Curral
das Freiras; castanhas em calda; em
vácuo; transformadas em doce; em
licores, em broas; em bolos e pudins,
entre muitos outros produtos. A sua
versatilidade é imensa.

3º Tratamento
Para evitar a desinfecção com pesticidas
que prejudicam o fruto e quem o
consome, é usado o tratamento com água
quente. O objetivo é que o choque térmico
mate os bichos que escondem no interior
dos frutos.
O tratamento tem dois métodos
à disposição: a ‘hidroterapia’ (onde
se adiciona ácido ascórbico à água)
e a ‘termoterapia’ ou ‘termização’
(turgescência dos frutos).
Consiste em separar as castanhas
danificadas podres ou atacadas por
fungos num processo de flutuação (os
frutos com bicho flutuam, tornando-se
por isso, fácil de separá-los). A água acaba

compartimentos secos e frescos,
organizadas por camadas até 25 e 30
cm. São remexidas periodicamente nos
recipientes de acondicionamento que
devem ser imóveis e estéreis. Para além
disso, estes devem possibilitar uma boa
acessibilidade e visibilidade, para que
o fruto possa ser observado quanto à
evolução da sua qualidade.
he chestnut holds an
T important meaning to the
parish of Curral das Freiras,
where regional production is of great
significance. Over time the fruit spread
to the neighbouring parishes of Jardim
da Serra and Serra de Água, but it is in
Curral das Freiras where it continues to
thrive.
Today, this dried fruit is processed
in the “Centro de Processamento da
Castanha da Madeira”, located in the
parish of Curral das Freiras, where the
magic happens. It boasts a sterilization
line, a chestnut dryer, a peeling
machine and a mill.
Since the chestnut tree and the
production of its fruit are so abundant
in this area, the “Chestnut Festival”
was created two decades ago and
is celebrated annually, on the 1st of
November. Ever since its creation the
festival has conquered its place in the
list of the most famous and traditional
events of the island, attracting
residents and tourists alike.
And if there are still any doubts
that Curral das Freiras is the “cradle”
of the chestnut, just take a look at the
municipality’s heraldry as there is one
drawn on it.

1º Harvest
Under normal weather conditions, the
harvest occurs between mid-October and
the end of November.
The first thing to do is to collect
the chestnuts from the ground, which
are then deposited into baskets and
transported back. They are placed in
bags over their heads weighing around 60
to 70 kg.
Tradition (and the scarce conditions)
dictate that the harvest be manual, since
there are no mechanisation systems
that speed up the process and therefore,
harvesting the fruit is not always easy.
Chestnut trees are spread over steep
terrains, requiring long, narrow and
dangerous paths of difficult access. This
means that the harvest and transport of
the fruit, which is mostly done by elderly
farmers, is not so high.
2º Post-Harvest
The second step is the post-harvest
process through which all the chestnuts
have to pass right after being harvested
and before being commercialised. This
stage is also done manually, consisting
of a pre-selection according to the size
and quality of each fruit. They are then
packed in plastic mesh bags that always
weigh 10 kilos or more and are sent to the
Chestnut Processing Centre in Curral das
Freiras.
3º Treatment
To avoid disinfection with pesticides
that harm the fruit and those who eat it,
hot water is used. The idea is that the
thermal shock kills the bugs that hide
inside the fruit.
There are two methods of treatment
available: ‘hydrotherapy’ (where
ascorbic acid is added to the water)
and ‘thermotherapy’ or ‘thermisation’
(turgescence of the fruit).
It consists in separating the damaged
chestnuts that are rotten or attacked by
fungus in a floating process (the affected
fruits float and are therefore easy to
separate). This process also favours the
internal maturation of the fruit. Then,
they are dried with hot air, at 25 degrees,
for 4 hours, to avoid rotting.
4º Sizing
This mechanical process is carried out
by calibrators that separate and select
the chestnuts according to size. On
arrival at the Processing Centre, the
chestnuts are weighed and separated
into 3 sizes. The calibre criterion is to
organise the number of fruits that make
up 1 kilo, drawing a pattern between their
diameter and weight. After identifying
these parameters, you first drop the
smaller fruits and then the larger ones.
Then, all you have to do is to start
wrapping and packing.
5º Preservation
Chestnuts are 60% to 70% water, which
tends to evaporate in the days following
harvest. This generates humidity which,
together with the heat felt at the time of
its ripening, can be favourable to fungi
or rotting of the fruit. This is where the
fundamental role of conservation and
storage comes in, to prevent this from
happening.
Preservation involves keeping the
chestnuts in a cool, dry warehouse or
compartments organised in layers of
up to 25 to 30 cm. They are periodically
stirred in the packaging containers, which
must be immobile and sterile. Moreover,
these must allow good accessibility and
visibility, so that the evolution of the
quality of the fruit can be observed.
6º Processing
Thanks to this process, the chestnut
acquires a greater durability allowing
consumers to use it for a longer period
of time. It is this process which makes it
possible, despite the seasonality of the
fruit, to diversify its products throughout
the year.
Chestnuts may be delivered to the
producers either whole or peeled in the
peeling machine at the Processing Centre.
They can also be sold as bread made from
chestnut flour; as dry fruit, the hydrated
fruit being fundamental in the traditional
Nun’s Valley Chestnut Soup; chestnuts in
syrup; in vacuum; transformed into sweet;
in liqueurs, in cakes and puddings, among
many other products. Its versatility is
immense.
