Wills was born in Melrose, Mass. on Aug. 21,1895, graduated from Melrose High School, and went on to study at MIT. As World War I heated up in 1918, he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve. There, he took a course on naval architecture, which led him to a brief shipbuilding career in Philadelphia. In 1919, Wills returned to Boston, where his architecture career began. He took a job with Turner Construction Company, which focused on commercial work. But his passion lay in designing homes. Rather than work with “slabs of concrete,” as he called them, Wills yearned to design cozy, nostalgic homes that accommodate the everyman. He took interest in the styles that surrounded him in Massachusetts: saltboxes, Cape Cod cottages, and garrison houses. This style of architecture was a relic of the past. Colonial style houses focused on utility, function, and simplicity rather than the flair and opulence of Victorian or Greco-Roman revival. Symmetrical square homes with little ornamentation, for all their plainness, drew Wills in. Royal Barry Wills homes were designed with a specific buyer in mind: young, middle- to upper-class suburbanites looking for an affordable home. He reached this audience by publishing his drawings and plans in Boston-area newspapers, marketing them for sale. All readers’ inquiries were directed back to Wills. ROYAL, continued on page 16
