His lecture that Thursday was the first of four he was set to give on the subject. Other topics covered in the academy include report writing, CPR, and criminal law. Academy Director Jack Dillon said when he first visited the former Boston Sports Clubs he couldn’t imagine it becoming such an advanced facility. “When I first came in here, say six months ago, I couldn't envision it, but now when you look at it … [it’s] unbelievable the transformation, and now to look at it when it’s done it’s like ‘this is great,’” he said. While recruits filled up the classroom, a group of 23 officers worked with Mike Niven, a use of force instructor with the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, as part of a 2-week use of force instructor training course. As part of the course, officers and instructors simulated different arrest scenarios, including one where the officers had to fire their weapons — in this case, cap guns, that did little more than create a popping sound that rang through the former tennis court and produced bright flashes that required those in the area to wear eye protection. Dillon said the new academy provides extra motivation for recruits. “When you're in an environment that's brand new and you know things are being taken care of you're gonna respect what you do a lot more than if you're an old dingy school that's been shut down for 20 years, but we use that as a classroom,” he said. A similar facility opened in Randolph, Dillon said, but it lacks some of the features that set Lynnfield apart. “A lot of them have been to the new facility out in Randolph, that's beautiful as well. But it doesn't have the pool, it doesn't have the track, it doesn’t have the locker room facility that we have here. So just those things alone really make a difference in how we can do things and how we can manage the everyday culture of the academy,” Dillon said. “But they've been amazed when people walk through. They’re like ‘wow, this is great.’” The pool is not deep enough to serve as a training site for water safety classes, Dillon said, but instead is used as a space for physical training and injury rehabilitation. On a typical day, recruits arrive at the facility around 7 a.m., and report to physical training at 7:30. From there, recruits gather in a formation and march to the classroom, where they spend the majority of their day. ACADEMY, continued on page 26
