A PICTURE WORTH
A THOUSAND
WORDS
“There are no words to express our deep
gratitude to everyone who stepped up
and sacrificed job time, family time,
fuel, and personal resources to support
the recent HSNT seizure of Heddins
Kennel dogs and puppies. The overwhelming
success of the entire operation
was due to the significant contributions
from our beloved animal welfare family.
[...] Fortunately for these formerly suffering
canines, we all pulled together
to make great things happen for truly
deserving dogs. It was an amazing thing
to witness, and I believe HSNT and DF-
WCares have made history...”
HSNT OPENS NEW SURGERY OFFICE
In September 2009, the Humane Society of North Texas moved the surgery center from the main shelter
building on Lancaster Street to its new location at 2309 Chester Street. It can be easily found by turning onto
Chester from Lancaster and going to the building directly behind cat adoptions on the west side of
HSNT’s main structure. Animals to be dropped off, and picked up, for their spay/neuter
surgeries should be brought to the new location.

More than 490 dogs were rescued on July 7, 2009, from the
MaggicPets/Heddins Kennel puppy mill after Montague
County sheriff’s officers served search and seizure
warrants on the owners. Humane Society investigators first
looked into the ranch 10 years ago, and received resident
complaints “on a regular basis,” said Sandy Grambort, part
of the HSNT Investigations team. “We had been unable to
verify those complaints in the past, and that’s why no action
was taken until this point,” she added.
The front area of the 200 acre farm presented a friendly and
inviting picture of the breeding business which had been in
operation for more than 30 years. Behind a privacy fence,
the scene changed drastically. Responders found pens with
12 to 15 dogs inside and no water. They found dogs with
missing legs and dogs that were already dead. They found
many, many dogs suffering from skin and eye infections as
well as advanced debilitating health conditions.
Cynthia Jones, DVM, who examined all the dogs for the
Humane Society, said she found something wrong with
every one. An elderly Chihuahua, suffering from a broken
lower jaw, broke the hearts of rescue workers as they
watched him eat bits of kibble by carefully manipulating the
angle of his head to soften it with saliva before swallowing.
One small elderly male poodle, his fur so matted and eyes
so encrusted he had become virtually blind, was found and
coaxed to safety by rescuers in a field of weeds which was
also hiding a nest of venomous copperhead snakes
Chesapeake Energy donated the use of a 4,000 square-foot
warehouse in the Fort Worth stockyards to temporarily
house the animals and create a safe haven. They also
provided support for the scores of volunteers working
diligently around the clock caring for the animals. The
Looking Forward to a New Leash on Life
Humane Society of North Texas received assistance from the
trained staff of United Animal Nations Emergency Animal
Rescue Services and animal services officers from the cities
of Fort Worth, Plano, and Irving. In addition, PetsMart
Charities donated crates, food and supplies, the Renaissance
Worthington hotel and the Hyatt Place housed some of the
out-of-state volunteers, Mellina Animal Hospital lent their
professional assistance, and local restaurants fed workers.
“As the animals started arriving we knew we had our work
cut out for us. We did not have a moment’s rest once the
seizure began [...] The lives of these animals have been
transformed from solitude and despair to the promise of a
safe future,” said Sandy Grambort at the staging shelter.
At the custody hearing on July 17, Justice of the Peace
Karen Reynolds awarded all but a few “family dogs” to the
Humane Society of North Texas, and ordered Mr. & Mrs.
Heddins to pay $40, 000 for the cost of their care. However,
HSNT cannot count on receiving that money. Once again, it
was the generous people of Texas who came to the rescue,
sending in contributions, donating supplies and filling out
adoption forms.
About 25 breeds were seized, and approximately half of
the dogs were turned over to breed-specific rescue groups
for fostering, rehabilitation and then adoption. All of the
remaining dogs were adopted by the many local families
who were eager to give a neglected animal a good home.
Tammy Roberts, Lead Investigator for HSNT had this to
say, “What matters is that the cruel and desperate doors of
their old world have been closed, and these animals are now
safe. We are dedicated to bringing all animals a new day
filled with loving care, hope, comfort and forever homes.”

76 ARABIAN HORSES FOUND IN CRITICAL CONDITION
Owner, charged with neglect, says
“...it is just not fair.”
The website for Renezans Stables shows sleek, healthy Arabians with carefully
groomed manes and tails. Unfortunately, those horses were not in sight when
Denton County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on August 14 in response to a
caller’s report of neglected animals. Instead, they found many starving and
emaciated horses standing in several inches of their own waste and urine, their
food buckets long-empty and no water in sight. “It was shocking,” said Denton
County Sheriff’s spokesman, Tom Reedy.
As deputies and staff from the Humane Society of North Texas were loading
the 76 horses for transfer to two different locations, the owner told deputies that he could not afford to feed the horses
and did not have time to clean out their stalls. “This is devastating,” he said. “I had a problem getting hay to the ones in
the barn... I can understand [the sheriff’s] position, but it is just not fair.” The 43-acre horse ranch, which is listed for sale
at nearly $1.7 million, boasts a manager’s house, a show barn and many pens and fenced areas.
Denton County Sheriff’s deputies obtained a warrant and detained the owner, Mr. Dennis Gordon Key. Later Mr. Key
was arrested and charged with cruelty to livestock animals, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and
a $4,000 fine. Bail was set at $10,000 and was posted on Sunday afternoon, August 16, releasing the owner.
The horses began their recovery at a private ranch in Ponder and a sale barn in Pilot Point, under the care of HSNT staff
and volunteers. Veterinary assessments revealed over 80% of the horses were in very poor to critical condition. Along
with being severely malnourished, “They were standing in a fecal swamp. Every single horse is in desperate need of
hoof care,” said Sandy Grambort, HSNT Equine Services. She estimates that it will take 6 - 8 months of feeding and care
before they return to a healthy weight.
At the custody hearing on August 26, Gordon Key voluntarily relinquished ownership of the 76 horses to the Humane
Society of North Texas in a plea agreement accepted by Justice of the Peace Joe Holland. HSNT will not seek
reimbursement from Mr. Key for the thousands of dollars already spent on their care. As a condition of this agreement,
he is to provide registration paperwork on all the horses which will help independent appraisers set their value, as well
as provide interested adopters with their pedigree/bio.
Please check our year-end newsletter for adoption results and for our special thanks to everyone who generously gave
of their time, help and resources.
Thanks to the Employees of Southwest Airlines who raised
over $1,000 to help the animals! Five deserving dogs found
new loving homes at this first SWA on-site adoption event.
Highway finds
a happy Home
The stray, who survived for more than a year surrounded by converging
freeways east of downtown Fort Worth, now makes her home with a former
employee of the Humane Society of North Texas. Blake Travis and Jason
Dougan, both veterinary technicians for HSNT, trapped and rescued the
dog November 28, 2007, and brought her back to live at the shelter on East
Lancaster Avenue.
“She was basically feral,” Travis said. “She hadn’t had any human contact
and didn’t want any.” The dog cowered in the back of her cage, fearful and
withdrawn. Although she wasn’t considered “adoptable,” the two employees
weren’t willing to give up on her. Eventually, she grew comfortable around
other dogs and warmed to the company of her rescuers, and other visitors.
Blake took her home with him in June of this year. “Now she’s jumping
around, wagging her tail, happy,” said Blake Travis. The reddish shepherd
mix, featured two years ago in the Star-Telegram, is one lucky dog.

”This is Patches, one of the dogs from the puppy mill
bust, and she was in bad physical shape. Even with all her
physical ailments, this dog is the sweetest, most affectionate
and trusting dog...” and “She is LOVING life with Judy!
She goes everywhere with her - even to work sometimes!
She is eating well and is flourishing in her new, loving
“I took this picture of Sadie Joy during bath time on Monday
after the seizure. On Sunday, I worried that she didn’t have
the spirit to get better. How wrong could I be? Now her
whole little body wiggles with joy when she sees us and she
is just a snuggle bug. I gave her Joy as a middle name on
purpose and she is living up to it!”
our family from the HSNT. She is full of energy, she is gentle, and
she loves people. We truly love her.
Ragout has added a level of joy and excitement in our lives – she is
absolutely perfect! Thank you HSNT!”
I just wanted to send you an update on our new family
member, Waffles. We have all fallen completely in love
with her, and it feels like she was always here. What a well
behaved little girl she is! She is eating, playing, sleeping,
and going potty perfectly. From the bottom of our hearts
we want to thank you for the great care you gave her while she
was waiting for us. You are running a wonderful facility.
”I came across a sad little black and white puppy named Paco at
the Lancaster St. location of the Humane Society in Fort Worth.
That was it, my heart was his. He was the sweetest little boy and
I adopted him right then and there. He has since been renamed
Bandit. Along with all the love he has provided plenty of humor
over the last four years... Bandit has been one of the best decisions
that I’ve ever made. The picture is of Bandit and Bongo (who I
adopted from the same Humane Society 17 years ago.)”
Joanne G.
“Bella wasn’t at HSNT for long before she got sick and had to
be quarantined at the shelter for awhile. Her fear and insecurity
made her a bad risk for adoption. It did not take long for her to
gain the confidence she needed while in foster care Please keep
the foster program going strong, I have 5 dogs that are wonderful
and all 5 would not have made it out of the shelter if it were not
for a foster program.”
“We rescued Skipper when he was about 6 weeks old. HSNT has
helped us so much with his medical care. They had to amputate
his leg to his shoulder. ... He bounced back very quickly and was
running around like nothing had happened after about 48 hours. ...
Skipper is full of energy and love. He is a good boy and we love him
very much. He is a part of our family now. I’m glad we took him
out of a bad situation, and can give him a loving home the rest of his life. I would like
to ask everyone to spay and neuter their pets, and to please adopt a homeless animal...
They will give you so much love.”
