GOOD AFTERNOON AND MERRY CHRISTMAS! 

I KNOW WE’RE NOT QUITE THERE YET, BUT THIS IS OUR FINAL GAME BEFORE CHRISTMAS 

AND MY LAST CHANCE TO WISH YOU ALL THE BEST FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON. 

It’s been a tough year for a lot 

of people and I hope you are all 

able to enjoy this time with family 

and friends to end it on a positive 

note. 

We did our best to help spread 

some Christmas cheer last Monday 

night at the Big Bolton Carol 

Concert here at the stadium. 

It was a wonderful occasion and 

heart-warming to see so many of 

you here to enjoy it and help raise 

money for the charitable causes 

we supported on the night. 

I felt it really helped bring the club, 

town and community even closer 

together and hit just the right note 

– even if the players didn’t! 

They were terrific sports to form 

their impromptu choir, though, 

and we do realise how important 

it is to try and join and meet the 

supporters when we can to keep 

building that bond between the 

team and the fans. 

We will also be out and about 

again next week when we make 

our annual Christmas hospital visits 

to deliver gifts and well-wishes

to patients and the staff looking 

after them and also to support the 

Junior Whites Christmas Party. 

It’s a busy time and for us, of 

course, a working Christmas. 

The festive season is often 

regarded as a key part of the 

campaign – even though we will 

just be reaching the half-way stage 

as we head into January. 

We want to get off to a positive 

start this afternoon and get back 

on the winning trail in the League. 

We’ve been going along okay to 

be sitting firmly in the top six but 

we know there’s still lots more 

to come from us and we were 

disappointed with the manner of 

the way we lost at Shrewsbury last 

Saturday. 

Having got ourselves in front I 

thought we looked in control of the 

game until those two late lapses 

from set-pieces. 

We know we have to do better in 

those kind of defensive situations 

and we had an honest chat about 

things at the start of the week in 

a bid to make slip-ups like that as 

avoidable as possible. 

The players are acutely aware 

of the need to make sure 

performances keep delivering 

results and I thought their response 

in mid-week was spot-on. 

I know it was a different 

competition and we were playing 

an U21 side. 

But Manchester United have 

some high-quality young players 

and I thought we won the game 

impressively and could have won 

by an even bigger margin than the 

4-0 scoreline. 

We have made no secret of the 

fact we want to keep progressing 

in the Papa Johns Trophy and we 

now have a quarter-final to look 

forward to in January. 

It’s important we challenge on two 

fronts and so it’s full focus back 

on the league before then and I’d 

like to welcome Exeter manager 

Gary Caldwell, his staff, players and 

the travelling fans who have made 

such an effort to get here today. 

I know we will have magnificent 

support with a big crowd 

guaranteed on another of our 

‘Family Days’. 

It’s a fantastic initiative by Sharon, 

the board and the club to offer 

reduced ticket prices – especially 

at this time of year – and make 

watching Wanderers as affordable 

as possible for all sections of the 

community. 

I hope you all enjoy the game and 

those who did the Santa Dash – 

another important fund-raiser for 

the work of Bolton Wanderers in 

the Community – aren’t feeling too 

stiff from their efforts!

Wanderers hit four past Manchester United’s 

youngster on a freezing cold evening at the 

University of Bolton Stadium to secure a place 

in the last eight of the competition. 

Ian Evatt’s men had a hatful of chances in 

the first half and had to bide their time for the 

opening goal having gone into the break with 

the score still goalless, and the first of four goals 

came following an error by Marc Jurado. The 

defender attempted to head the ball back to 

Nathan Bishop, but Dapo Afolayan intercepted 

to pass the ball into an empty net. 

Aaron Morley’s superb free-kick shortly 

afterwards gave Wanderers a two-goal cushion 

before two goals in stoppage time put a 

warranted gloss on the score line. First Amadou 

Bakayoko found the net before Afolayan put one 

on a plate for Conor Bradley to score from close 

range.

Well-travelled goalkeeper Jamal Blackman is the man between the sticks for the 

Grecians having joined following his release from Huddersfield Town at the end of last 

season. 

The former England youth international came through the ranks at Chelsea. Although 

he never made an appearance for the Blues, he did spent time out on loan with the 

likes of Middlesbrough, Wycombe Wanderers, Sheffield United and Rotherham United. 

Moving to Los Angeles FC in 2021, the Croydon-born stopper returned to England 

in January 2022 to sign for Huddersfield Town. So far this season, he has made 23 

appearances for Exeter. 

CENTRE BACK | PIERCE SWEENEY 

AGE: 28 | PREVIOUS CLUB: SWINDON TOWN 

Sweeney has been a regular at the heart of Exeter City’s defence since his 

original arrival at the club from Reading in the summer of 2016. 

Aside from an incredibly brief spell at Swindon Town that saw him make a 

quick U-turn on the move and return to St. James Park, he has been integral 

to the Grecians and in total for the club and has made 296 appearances (20 

goals). 

Starting out in his native Republic of Ireland with Bray Wanderers, Sweeney 

earned a move to Reading in 2012 but spent four years at the Madejski 

Stadium without making a senior appearance. 

CENTRE MIDFIELDER | ARCHIE COLLINS 

AGE: 23 | PREVIOUS CLUB: N/A (ACADEMY GRADUATE) 

If you read through today’s Exeter City player profiles this afternoon, you’ll 

see that their academy has played a significant role in producing talent 

capable of playing in the first team, and Archie Collins is a fine example of 

that. 

A regular in middle of the park, the Taunton-born central midfielder has 

already made 196 appearances (12 goals) despite having only celebrated his 

23rd birthday in the opening month of the season. Collins had to ply his trade 

out on loan with Weston-Super-Mare and Dorchester Town initially, but he’s 

now an established member of the Exeter City starting eleven. 

STRIKER | JEVANI BROWN 

AGE: 28 | PREVIOUS CLUB: COLCHESTER UNITED 

Enjoying his best season to date, Brown is the spearhead of Exeter 

City’s attacking force in a side that has scored plenty of goals this 

season. The former Colchester United man has 11 goals and he’ll be 

hoping to kick on towards the 20 mark in the new year. 

Starting out with Peterborough United in 2013, Brown never made the 

grade at London Road and spent the next four years playing nonleague 

football before he was signed by Cambridge in the summer of 

2017. After a couple of years at the Abbey Stadium, the former Jamaica 

youth international had spells with Colchester United and Forest Green 

Rovers (loan).

THE BOSS… 

Caldwell has seen his side collect a real mixed bag of results since 

his arrival at the club in October following Matt Taylor’s departure to 

Rotherham United, and he’ll be hoping to keep the Grecians in the hunt 

for a play-off place going into the new year. 

The Scot is back in full-time management after a few years away, 

although he had recently spent time as assistant manager to Shaun 

Maloney at Hibernian. The former centre back began his managerial 

career at Wigan Athletic before spells at Chesterfield and Partick Thistle. 

As a player, the 40-year-old came through to begin his career with 

Newcastle United, before a move to Hibernian in 2004. After a couple of 

years at Easter Road, he joined Celtic and remained in Glasgow for four 

years until a move to the Premier League with Wigan Athletic in 2010. 

The former Scotland B international hung up his boots in 2015.

THOUSANDS FILL THE 

STADIUM WITH SONG! 

COMMUNITY COME OUT IN FORCE TO CELEBRATE AN EVENING OF MUSIC 

AND SONG AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM. 

Thousands of people were at the 

University of Bolton Stadium on 

Monday night for the club’s Big 

Bolton Carol Concert. 

Only a few weeks in the 

making, the event – delivered in 

partnership with Bolton Council 

and the University of Bolton – 

aimed to bring the town and 

community together for an evening 

of festive fun under the floodlights. 

With sensational solo 

performances from singer and 

presenter Brenda Edwards, carols 

headed up by over 1,000 local 

primary school children and the 

Wanderers’ squad in full voice 

following a signing session for 

young fans, it proved to be night 

to remember at the home of the 

Whites. 

Sharon Brittan, Chairman of Bolton 

Wanderers said: “What a night! 

From the fantastic turn out to 

the incredible performances, it 

was such a special and moving 

evening. 

“From the bottom of my heart, I 

want to thank all those who took 

the trip out on a cold December 

night to be part of the concert and 

for the phenomenal support we 

have been shown by our whole 

community. 

“We already know we have raised 

thousands for the six charities at 

the centre of this event and that’s 

very much what the concert was 

all about. 

“From myself and all the staff at 

Bolton Wanderers, I would like 

to wish everyone a very Merry 

Christmas and peaceful New Year.” 

Manager Ian Evatt said: “The staff, 

the lads and I were all delighted 

to be part of a fantastic evening. 

Credit to everyone involved. It 

was a great event for the club and 

the town and again showed that 

we are all in this together as this 

club keeps growing on and off the 

pitch.”

EOIN TOAL IS PLANNING FOR A NEW KIND OF 

CHRISTMAS AS HE CONTINUES TO GROW 

AS A WANDERERS’ PLAYER. 

In years gone by, the Whites’ 

defender might have been 

allowing himself a little closeseason 

indulgence during the 

festive season. 

With the League of Ireland not 

starting until February, the former 

Derry City man would have been 

enjoying the last of his downtime. 

But that all changed when Toal 

fulfilled an ambition to move into 

the EFL when he joined Wanderers 

in July. 

And the 23-year-old isn’t 

complaining one bit as he 

anticipates a working Christmas 

built around quality time at his now- 

Bolton home with girlfriend Rachel. 

“At my old club it was a summer 

league and we’d normally get 

November and December off,” said 

Toal. 

“This is something different but 

I’m looking forward to it. I know 

Christmas is traditionally a big time 

for football over here and it will be 

good to experience it. 

“It’s an important time for us, as 

well. We need to get some more 

league points on the board and 

hopefully we can do that.” 

There have been more hectic 

Christmas schedules in the past for 

EFL clubs, given that there are no 

games scheduled for Saturday, 24 

December. 

Wanderers go 10 days between 

playing Exeter City today and 

facing Derby County on 27 

December in a game pushed back 

24 hours from Boxing Day for live 

television coverage. 

But the visit of the Rams kicks off 

a run of three games inside seven 

days wrapped around New Year 

which still makes it a potentially 

pivotal time. 

It could, therefore, be all hands to 

the pump, which may well mean 

more game-time for Toal, who has 

stepped up to the mark in recent 

weeks to underline his value to 

Evatt’s squad as they aim to keep 

firing on two fronts. 

The 23-year-old had to bide 

his time for a first-team chance 

following his arrival from Derry on a 

three-year deal. 

But having got up to full fitness, 

Toal has seized the opportunity 

to try and fill the big shoes of 

sidelined skipper Ricardo Almeida 

Santos. 

“I knew it wouldn’t be easy,” Toal 

added. “I knew coming over here 

was going to be challenging, 

playing against different types of 

opposition every week. 

“The months leading up to my first 

games really helped. I’ve been 

training with very good players 

who have played a lot of games in 

League One and I’ve been learning 

a lot from them, so it’s been good.”

After feeling his way in via the 

Papa Johns Trophy group games, 

Toal completed a first 90 minutes 

in a Wanderers’ shirt to help the 

Whites get past Barrow in the first 

knock-out round of the competition 

last month. 

His league debut then came with 

an impressive performance in the 

1-1 draw at home to Bristol Rovers 

at the start of December before 

the central defender had to share

“I’ve got a couple of league games 

under my belt now and I’ve played 

a few Papa Johns games as well, 

so it’s been very enjoyable and I’m 

loving being here. 

“It was good to get an opportunity 

in the league and I think I did 

all right. We could have got a 

win in the first game (against 

Bristol Rovers) and then it was a 

disappointing result last Saturday. 

“It would have been nice to have 

got two wins out of two but on a 

personal note it’s been good and 

good to get some league minutes 

in. 

“It’s only going to spur you to kick 

on further and hopefully I can do 

that.”

manager may herald a fresh start 

for his country and having 

been capped more than a 

dozen times at U21 level, 

Toal is no stranger to the 

international set-up. 

“Dion and Conor are 

here and already in the 

squad. Hopefully I can 

showcase my talents and 

later on get called in,” he

“But for now, I’m just 

focused on playing for

WINTER HAF WITH BOLTON WANDERERS 

IN THE COMMUNITY 

Over the Christmas holidays 

Bolton Wanderers in the 

Community will be one of several 

providers offering free activities 

for young people aged 8-17 years 

old who are on benefits related 

free school meals. The activities 

being delivered are running 

football-based sessions and will 

take place at Bolton St Catherines 

Academy on their 3G football 

pitch. 

The sessions will consist of 

matches, fun games, challenges, 

tournaments, and other footballbased 

activities. There will also 

be hot food provided, free of 

charge for all young people who 

attend. There will be a World 

Cup theme running throughout 

the days culminating in a football 

tournament for the final day of the 

sessions, where all young people 

will receive a certificate and the 

winners will be given medals and 

match tickets for a BWFC game of 

their choice. 

The sessions will take place on the 

following days and times:

LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS 

On Monday night we held our 

Big Bolton Carol Concert, where 

thousands of people joined in 

under the floodlights piercing the 

cold dark December night sky. 

With a thousand strong children’s 

choir from many schools around 

Bolton and Bury filling the stadium 

with the sound of excited voices 

singing their hearts out, you could 

not help but feel, in spite of the 

bitter cold, a real warmth inside 

and that Christmas is really on the 

way. 

The evening got everyone 

singing their favourite Carols with 

solo introductions from some 

spectacular talent on show and 

the full first team squad led by our 

manager Ian Evatt getting involved. 

The climax of the evening was 

something that will live long in the 

memory when the stadium was 

plunged into darkness and that 

darkness was pierced now, not by 

floodlights, but the individual lights 

of all those present waving their 

phone torches. The air was then 

filled by the incredible talent of 

Brenda Edwards singing “O Holy 

Night” and “Silent Night”. 

It was my privilege to host the 

evening and to share my thoughts 

on those lights piercing the 

darkness. It only takes the tiniest 

of lights to dispel the darkness and 

the Christmas story is a reminder of 

God’s light coming into the world 

in a small baby in Bethlehem and 

as John’s Gospel put’s it “and the 

darkness has never put it out”. 

In our troubled and dark work, with 

all the anxieties people are going 

through at the present time, we can 

all be a light in the darkness and 

make a difference both individually 

and collectively. 

The evening was about coming 

together and support six fantastic 

charities that are beacons of light in 

the darkness. You can sill help and

to the work Bolton Wanderers in 

the Community, Urban Outreach, 

Age UK Bolton, Backup Northwest, 

1 Point Northwest and The Jamal 

Edwards Self Belief Trust. All funds

LAST WEEK WE ANNOUNCED THAT THE ACV ON THE UOB STADIUM HAD BEEN 

RENEWED FOR A FURTHER FIVE YEARS. THE ORIGINAL GRANTING OF ASSET OF 

COMMUNITY VALUE STATUS BACK IN 2017 WAS A HARD-FOUGHT BATTLE AGAINST 

MUCH RESISTANCE AND REQUIRED A HUGE AMOUNT OF TIME AND EFFORT. 

The importance of having our 

stadium listed as an ACV has, 

once again, been emphasised by 

the eviction notice issued recently 

to Coventry City FC by their 

stadium owner, Mike Ashley’s 

Fraser Group. Coventry City fans 

have experienced several years 

of disruption and stress from 

current and previous owners of 

their stadium, having been forced 

to play their “home” games in 

other locations (Northampton and 

Birmingham). 

The recent administration of Derby 

County FC was also made far more 

complicated and drawn out due 

to their stadium not being owned 

by the football club. Several other 

stadia in English football are not 

directly under the ownership of the 

associated football club, leaving 

those clubs at the mercy of the 

stadium owners. 

The re-registration of the ACV and 

many other BWFCST achievements 

since our inception in 2016 which 

protect our club and the interests 

of our fans have been instigated 

and driven by your Trust, not least, 

the current excellent collaborative 

relationship with the club owners 

and CEO Neil Hart.
