OURCITY’SHEROESA well-earned rest for a much-loved canine lifesaverHumberside Police have hundreds ofpopular members of police staff, but fewmatch the appeal of canine lifesaver Clivethe black and white cocker spaniel.Clive retired from his paw-patrol as alife-saving Medical Assistance dog.Clive worked alongside his owner MichelleSutherland from Humberside Police’sLogistics Department where he washer faithful companion and true lifesaver.Seven months after getting Clive as a puppyin 2012, Michelle was diagnosed withthe life-limiting condition Addison’s Disease,a rare disorder of the adrenal glandwith life debilitating symptoms includingextreme fatigue, weakness and generalisedmuscle pain.After spending a long period in hospitalfollowing complications related to hercondition, Michelle returned home andstraight away noticed a change in Clive’sbehaviour.Following a chance conversation at Cruftsin 2014 with representatives from MedicalDetection dogs, a suggestion wasmade about the possibility of having Clivetrained as an assistance dog to help Michellemanage her condition better.It soon became apparent that the changesMichelle had noticed in Clive weresigns of him alerting and after approx. 18months in training he became her MedicalAlert Assistance dog.Clive can detect a drop in Michelle’s steroidlevels by a change in her scent levelsand makes her aware of this by eitherjumping up to her face, or if she is asleeppawing at her until he gets her attention.She will then take action by injecting herself.As a result, he was a life saver every dayand emergency ambulance trips becamea thing of the past.Clive is also a canine celebrity after featuringin a number of publications overthe years, if you search for ‘Clive thecocker spaniel’ on Google he appears onso many websites and links!Clive has also been nominated for andwon several awards including:Winner in the 2019 Pet Health Club’s “PetHero of the Year”Finalist in the 2019 Amplifon Pet of theyearWinner of the Barking Mad Pet of the yearHis most prestigious award though, whichhe will receive later in 2022, is the PDSAOrder of Merit which is the animal equivalentof an OBE.Everyone at Humberside Police wishesClive a long and happy retirement –We are sure there’s going to be plenty oftreats in store for him as he steps asidefor a new trained Medical Alert Assistancedog a black Labrador called Luke.We’re super proud of all those who were shortlistedfor this year’s Hull York Medical SchoolTeaching Excellence Awards. The awards recognisethe support individual clinicians andteams have given to our future medical workforceover the past 12 months. Nominations aremade, and winners chosen, by the studentsthemselves. Congratulations to our ClinicalCastle Hill HospitalSkills Team, Dr Eloise Dexter, Diane Dickinsonand Dena Larvin, and Mr Androniks Mumdzjanswho all won in their respective categorieson the night. A huge well done also to ProfessorDavid Hepburn, described by one student as “aguiding light throughout our time at medicalschool”, who earned himself the ‘ExceptionalContribution to Student Experience’ award.Hull 4 HeroesHuge thank you to Andrew Earle and Steve Sanderson who calledus yesterday to donate over 100 turkeys for our food donationpartnership.We have now distributed these to veterans in our community andalso to various food banks within the Hull area who will gift theseout to their service users.Thank you very much Andrew and Steve and to everyone involvedin getting these turkeys to people who may be struggling thisChristmas. #strongertogether30Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram!
