FROM THE MANAGER
IAN EVATT
WELCOME BACK TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM
FOR OUR FIRST HOME GAME OF 2023.
I’d like to take this opportunity to
wish you and your families good
health and happiness for the year
ahead.
Your support has been absolutely
magnificent since I’ve been here and
it just gets more impressive with each
passing game, home and away.
Myself and the lads were blown
away by the special atmosphere you
created against Derby in what was
the stadium’s largest attendance for
a decade.
Something special is happening at
this club and it’s so pleasing to see
the fans buy into what Sharon and the
Board are doing behind the scenes.
On the pitch we are determined to
play our part and it is thanks to you all
for the role you play in getting behind
the lads week in and week out.
That said, we were disappointed
not to have picked up the maximum
against Derby and in the following
game at Lincoln City, but if you aren’t
able to win games then you have
got to make sure you draw them. We
were never in danger of losing those
which shows how resilient we are.
When we have the right energy and
attitude and play with the correct
aggression and intensity with
and without the ball we’re a
really good team.
We let ourselves down in the
first half the other day at
Lincoln and we wanted
to set the record
straight at Oakwell.
There was some
frustration from us
with the way the two games against
Barnsley had already gone this
season and we felt like we needed to
turn up and show the best version of
ourselves and I think we did that.
The players have put in a tremendous
shift this month and I was really
pleased for them and especially
the travelling fans who once again
outsung a home crowd.
As I’ve already said, recent results
have shown that we are a really
difficult team to beat and we know
we’ve left some points out there, but
as last Monday shows when we do
the right things we are a match for
anybody in this division. When we
score first we are a tough team to
beat and we tend to win games.
I was really pleased with how we
started and we won it with the way
our energy and attitude was in the
first 10 minutes. We pressed intensely,
played in behind and probably
should have had a penalty and a
red card a couple of minutes before
Dion’s penalty. But we eventually got
the rewards, got ahead and after that
it was comfortable.
We knew they would still have
energy and press but if we moved
the ball and kept patient, eventually
they would fatigue and tire and then
we took advantage for the last 20
minutes.
We got some fresh legs on
and scored a wonderful
third and probably could
have added to it.
For how brilliant we
were on Monday, we
immediately turned our focus towards
today’s opponents who will provide a
strong test for us.
Plymouth are four points clear at the
top of the league for a reason and I’d
like to welcome Steven Schumacher,
his staff and players and all the fans
who have made the very long trip up
from the South West.
A positive result for us today will
hopefully solidify our position in
the pack that is challenging for the
automatic spots. Over the past couple
of seasons, we have shown that we
are strong finishers to the season -
and I have no doubt that this will be
the case again.
While January is obviously a busy
month on the pitch, it’s even more
so off it as the window opens. Our
recruitment work is an ongoing
process and myself, Chris Markham
and the recruitment team are
constantly looking at how we can
improve the squad. No stone is left
unturned as we look to enhance the
calibre of the group. We are looking
to get our business completed early
in the window which will allow any
possible additions to acclimatise
to our identity immediately and we
are delighted to welcome Randell
Williams on board as our first signing.
We’ve got a busy week ahead of
us with the visit of Portsmouth twice
(league and Papa Johns Trophy) in
quick succession and as always we
look forward to playing in front of
you all.
Keep up your fantastic support and
enjoy today’s game.
Ian.
THE BOARDROOM
NEIL HART
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL AND BEST
WISHES FOR THE YEAR AHEAD.
I hope 2023 is a happy and
successful 12 months for everyone
and the year certainly started well
at Barnsley with a terrific win last
Monday.
Again, the away support was
magnificent, along with a really
strong viewing figure via iFollow
for those who chose to watch the
game that way.
The uptake on iFollow streaming
over the Christmas period and
through the duration of the World
Cup has been significant.
The revenue raised for the club
via that platform is important and
appreciated and we thank all those
fans who have followed the team
via iFollow and those who have
been able to attend matches and
support Ian and his players ‘live’.
To get a crowd of almost 20,000
for our last home game before
Christmas was great to see and
again reflected the success and
impact of ‘Family Day’ and the
reduced ticket prices we offer on
those occasions.
To follow that up with the biggest
attendance here since the club’s
Premier League Days for the
Bank Holiday game against Derby
County was another fantastic sight
and further proof that the club
continues to move in the right
direction on and off the field.
With supporters buying 470 halfseason
tickets, the number of
season-ticket holders we have has
now topped 14,000 – the highest
figure since the 2008/09 season.
That level of support is truly
appreciated throughout the club
from the Board to Ian and the
players and I know the team will
again have superb backing for
another big game today.
We are continuing to try and
evolve the match-day experience
for everyone and while I know the
weather isn’t currently at its best,
the Fan Zone remains open before
and after matches and I encourage
supporters to continue to enjoy
what has been a popular addition
to match days.
As we move into 2023, we are
continuing discussions over
stadium naming rights and a
principal front-of-shirt sponsor
for 2023/24 and beyond and
will keep supporters informed of
developments.
Other key dates this year will be
the two concerts staged by Pink at
the University of Bolton Stadium on
7 and 8 June as the singer kicks off
her European Tour.
Members of her tour and
operations’ team were at the
club this week to continue
working closely with club staff on
arrangements for what will be two
amazing nights.
There will be 36,000 people
here each night and while there
are no general admission tickets
remaining, hospitality can be
booked via sales@bwfc.co.uk
Football-wise, we are now in the
January transfer window and
working closely with Ian, Chris
Markham and the recruitment staff
we continue to try and strengthen
the squad where needed. The
arrival this week of Randell Williams
has made it a positive start to the
window and we welcome him to
the club.
Finally, I would just like to welcome
the directors, staff and supporters
of Plymouth Argyle today and reiterate
our collective message from
Sharon and the board of a Happy
New Year to you all.
Wanderers brought 2022 to an end
with a point on the road against a
Lincoln City side unbeaten on their
patch all season.
The Whites were slow out of the
traps and fell behind early on to
Ben House’s goal but a marked
improvement after the break resulted
in Eoin Toal scoring the equaliser
and his first goal for the club just
before the hour mark, latching onto
Aaron Morley’s corner to head past
Carl Rushworth at the near post.
Joe Walsh was sent off shortly
afterwards for a second bookable
offence but the home side resisted
for half an hour to hang on for a
point.
THE SPINE OF THE TEAM
GOALKEEPER | MICHAEL COOPER
AGE: 23 | PREVIOUS CLUB: N/A (ACADEMY GRADUATE)
A graduate of Plymouth’s academy setup, Cooper has matured to
become one of the best goalkeepers at this level – a key figure in Steven
Schumacher’s team as they look to earn automatic promotion to the
Championship this term.
Making his professional debut for the Pilgrims in a 1-1 League One draw
at Blackburn Rovers in October 2017, the Exeter-born stopper has made
a total of 138 appearances for the club. In 27 appearances this season,
Cooper has made 10 clean sheets.
CENTRE BACK | DAN SCARR
AGE: 28 | PREVIOUS CLUB: WALSALL
Starting out playing non-league football with the likes of Redditch United and Stourbridge,
Scarr secured a move to boyhood club Birmingham City ahead of the 2017/18 season –
earning his big break in the professional game.
Playing just once for the Blues, he signed for Walsall in January 2019 for an undisclosed fee
having spent six months on loan at Wycombe Wanderers. Outstanding during two-and-a-half
years with the Saddlers, he made a total of 96 appearances (7 goals) before signing
for Plymouth Argyle in July 2021.
Impressing during his first season at Home Park (2021/22), Scarr has continued to be a regular
in the heart of the Argyle defence and this season he has made 22 appearances (1 goal).
CENTRE MIDFIELDER | ADAM RANDELL
AGE: 22 | PREVIOUS CLUB: N/A (ACADEMY GRADUATE)
Another graduate of Argyle’s academy setup, Randell has established a
position of his own in the centre of the park under the guidance of Steven
Schumacher who also played in midfield during his playing career.
Making his debut in a Football League Trophy defeat at Newport County
in November 2018, his league debut came almost a year later as the
Pilgrims were held to a draw by Oldham Athletic at Home Park. Spending
the majority of the 2020/21 season on loan at National League side
Torquay United, Randell made 33 appearances for his parent club last
term. He has just gone past that tally this time around and also has 3 goals
to his name.
STRIKER | NIALL ENNIS
AGE: 23 | PREVIOUS CLUB: WOLVES
Having reached the 10-goal mark during last week’s 3-1 home victory
against MK Dons, Ennis will be looking to continue his fine form for Argyle
by firing the club to promotion this term.
One of the two scorers in the Pilgrims’ 2-0 victory against Wanderers at
Home Park in August, Ennis has a total of 20 goals for the club since his
move from Wolves for an undisclosed fee two years ago.
The lively forward opted to leave his hometown club on a permanent basis
in January 2021 after making just one senior appearance for them, and
following loans at Shrewsbury Town, Doncaster Rovers and Burton Albion.
THE BOSS…
Stepping up into the Argyle hotseat from his position as assistant
manager following Ryan Lowe’s departure to Preston North End,
Schumacher has built on the work done by his predecessor to turn the
Pilgrims into genuine promotion contenders this term.
The Devon club narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs last term
and their target this season is clear – go one better. Schumacher came
through the youth ranks at Everton during his playing days before getting
his professional career going with a three-year spell at Bradford City
(2004-2007). The former central midfielder went onto feature for Crewe
Alexandra, Bury, Fleetwood Town, Stevenage, and Southport before
hanging his boots up in 2018.
about the squad switching from
tracksuits to formal suits to arrive
at games. (Pictured are the
current squad warming up for the
Christmas Carol Concert).
Whatever your thoughts as to the
whys and wherefores, long before
tracksuits, the team turned up to
games in formal attire.
The FA Cup winning teams of the
1920’s were regularly pictured
turning up for fixtures and out and
about.
The 1926 side, led by captain Joe
Smith, on a mid-season trip to
Southport before they defeated
Manchester City 1-0 in the final at
Wembley, no doubt looking for the
local snooker hall.
In 1929 the team posed with the FA
Cup in suits with Fred Kean, lying
bottom left, even bringing along
his pet dog for the occasion to
toast the 2-0 defeat of Portsmouth.
Manager, Charles Foweraker,
The summer of 1960 saw the
Wanderers posing outside Burnden
Park before leaving for a postseason
trip to Germany and Spain
that saw them play five matches.
Included in the line up are four
England internationals in Eddie
Hopkinson, Ray Parry, Freddie Hill
and Tommy Banks.
The Club had just finished sixth
in the first division, long before
such performances would earn
European qualification, having
defeated Manchester City, Chelsea
and Leicester in the last three
games of the season.
In 1985 the team lined up in semi
formal attire with jumper and
slacks. Struggling in the old Third
Division, finishing 18th at the end
of that season, the team reached
Wembley for the first since 1958
in the Freight Rover Trophy, losing
3-0 to Bristol City.
Randell Williams from Hull City for an undisclosed fee
on a two-and-a-half year deal. Capable of operating
as a wing-back/winger, the 26-year-old had previously
featured for Exeter City and Wycombe Wanderers
having spent time with Crystal Palace and Watford
in the early stages of his career. We're delighted to
#15 WILL
AIMSON
20 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888
WILL AIMSON WILL HAVE THE ‘GREEN ARMY’ OF
PLYMOUTH IN HIS SIGHTS THIS AFTERNOON.
But if things had turned out
differently, the Wanderers’
defender might have been
targeting a different kind of green.
A talented golfer in his youth,
Aimson contemplated trying to
forge a career in the sport.
But football ultimately won the
day and a round of golf now
often means a marginally less
competitive round with his teammates
– who still rate him a bandit
off his current handicap mark of
five.
“There was a stage where I was
possibly going to go with golf,”
Aimson admitted.
“People say football is the hardest
sport to make it, but I would argue
golf is just as hard and also very
expensive.
“A lot of self-funding has to go
into it before you start making any
real money and the competition is
ridiculous.
“I’ve had a few mates who have
turned pro who were shooting
very good scores and they were
nowhere near it.
“They were playing their best and
they were nowhere near what you
had to be. And that was just the
start of turning pro, so you can only
imagine what’s it like further up
the line.
“I kind of stopped for a couple of
years but the last four or five years
I’ve got back into it and I love it.
There are a few of the lads here
who play, which is nice.”
After close to a decade as a
professional footballer, Aimson’s
decision has been fully vindicated.
And the 28-year-old is currently at
the top of his game after biding his
time before reaping the benefits
of a thorough preparation in preseason.
Dorset-born Aimson spent much
of last summer back home on the
south coast where he worked out
alongside older brother Lewis, a
former non-league footballer with
Bashley and a keen tri-athlete.
His efforts didn’t go un-noticed as
he returned for pre-season with
Wanderers to earn the nickname
of ‘Slim’ or ‘Slimson’ as a nod to his
social media handle @Waimson.
“I think even my barber has
somehow got wind of it, so he calls
me Slimson now, which is quite
funny,” Aimson laughed.
“I did things a little bit differently
back home in Bournemouth with
the fitness side of stuff and it paid
off.
“I felt good coming back in the
summer. It was probably the fittest
I’d been coming back for preseason
and I felt in quite good
shape, hence ‘Slimson’.”
www.bwfc.co.uk
The Wanderer | 21
Aimson then played his part in
Wanderers’ solid start to the
season but the form of Ricardo
Almeida Santos, Gethin Jones and
George Johnston – as well as a
spell out with a hamstring injury –
limited his appearances beyond
the Carabao Cup and Papa Johns
Trophy.
The former Blackpool, Bury
and Plymouth central defender
remained ready and waiting,
though, and with defensive injuries
starting to bite he stepped into
the breach last month and is yet
to finish on the losing side in an
impressive five-game run.
“You ask any player and it’s
frustrating being out of the team.
We all want to play but, at the same
time, whoever’s in we back and get
behind,” Aimson said.
“We’re lucky to have such a good
squad with such depth. If you look
at this time last year we probably
had a similar amount of players
missing with injury and we were
really down to the bare bones and
kind of had to put makeshift teams
together in funny positions.
“No disrespect to who was playing
last year, and a lot of people were
playing out of position, but we can
still field a really competitive XI and
subs with people missing.
“I’m always ready and ready to
do the job on hand. I feel like I’ve
taken my chance and I’m enjoying
playing at the moment.
“I just want to help the team and
help the club get where it needs
to get to.”
Wanderers’ recent League One
record of two draws and two
wins in four games either side of
Christmas – built around three
clean sheets – is even more
impressive given the fact that
Aimson has forged part of a
three-man central defensive unit
including Johnston and summer
signing Eoin Toal that had never
previously played before.
“I’ve enjoyed playing alongside
them,” Aimson added. “Constantly
talking, constantly organising, I
think those two have been really
solid either side of me and Traff
behind us.
“We’ve conceded one goal in four
games and I’m enjoying my football
at the moment.
“We’ve had some good games to
play in and probably could have
had more points, in my opinion. I
think we should maybe have had
one or two more wins than we’ve
had. But I’m enjoying it and we’ll
keep going.”
Ian Evatt’s men certainly have
some momentum behind them
thanks to the superb 3-0 win at
Barnsley on Monday which kicked
off their New Year in perfect style
and restored the Whites to a
top-six position after a 24-hour
absence.
Today’s visit of league leaders
Plymouth will present another
test, but Aimson is relishing the
prospect of facing a club where
he spent two happy years before
joining the Whites in the summer
of 2021 as the key games keep
coming at a potentially pivotal
stage of the season.
“It feels like we’ve only got past
this one and there’s another big
week to come. It’s just a big month,
really,” he said.
“If you look at the fixtures, we
are playing a lot of teams in and
around us and there’s a chance
to get to Wembley (in the Papa
Johns Trophy) which doesn’t come
around too often.
“But it’s the old saying, we’ll take it
game by game and see what we
can do.
“We were frustrated after (drawing
at) Lincoln, so to go to Barnsley
and get that win, in the way that we
did, was really pleasing.
“The way we have started games
has sometimes been our Achilles’
heel, so we are really focusing on
starting quicker in every aspect,
on and off the ball, and taking
it to the other team and scoring
first because a lot of the times we
score first we don’t get beat.
“That’s what we need to focus
on and I fancy us against anyone
to be honest, especially at the
moment with the form we’re in.
“Saturday will be tough. I know
a lot of the lads at Plymouth
personally. They have some very
good players. They’re ruthless,
they’re well managed with a very
good manager in charge of them,
but it’s one we’ll enjoy.
“They’re flying high and it’s our job
to hold them back a little bit and
put in a good performance and
hopefully beat them.”
For the division’s game of the
day, it couldn’t have been teed up
better.
Social Media Man of the Match: Kyle Dempsey
Wanderers started the new year in style with a
comprehensive victory against play-off chasing rivals
Barnsley at Oakwell.
Mads Andersen was sent off in the opening stages for
fouling Dion Charles in the box and being deemed to
have prevented a clear goal scoring opportunity by the
referee, and the Wanderers frontman made no mistake
with the spot kick.
An error by Robbie Cundy in the Barnsley defensive
ranks allowed Jón Daði Böðvarsson to roll the ball in an
empty net after coming out on top in a 50-50 challenge
with Tykes’ stopper Brad Collins and the icing on the
cake was added by Kyle Dempsey in the second half.
Following an exquisite 19-pass move, Dempsey was on
hand to fire the ball between the legs of Collins in front
of the 3,000+ travelling Bolton fans as Ian Evatt’s Whites
moved back into the play-off places and level on points
with the South Yorkshire outfit.
ONE TOWN
Club Chaplain & Senior Safeguarding Manager 07885 755 807 and pmason@bwfc.co.uk
MAKE IT A HAPPY NEW YEAR
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND ALL YOUR FAMILY, IT IS GREAT TO SEE YOU BACK HERE AT UNIVERSITY OF
BOLTON STADIUM FOR OUR FIRST HOME FIXTURE OF 2023 AFTER A GREAT RUN OVER THE FESTIVE PERIOD.
I am sure, like me, you have
offered the greeting of “Happy
New Year” many times in this
past week, but the reality can be
so different. For it to be a happy
2023 often requires action from
ourselves and dark January /
February days can often take
people to a low ebb.
The third Monday of January
has been awarded the gloomy
title of “Blue Monday” due to a
combination of post-Christmas
blues, cold dark nights and the
arrival of unpaid credit card bills.
Apparently, a university professor
managed to precisely calculate
the most depressing day of the
year, using a formula calculated
by using many factors, including:
weather conditions, debt level
(the difference between debt
accumulated and our ability to pay),
time since Christmas, time since
failing our new year’s resolutions,
low motivational levels and feeling
of a need to take action.
Whatever the science behind it or
not, this time of year can be a really
tough for many people, which has
been exaggerated at the start of
this year by all the cost-of-living
concerns along with all the impact
of Covid for the past two years.
It is because of all this the Club,
through Bolton Wanderers in the
to take control and to teach you
that prevention is better than cure.
from some of the region’s largest
with mental health issues (what
went well and what didn’t) and the
positive effect those interventions
had on the workforce – an
opportunity to build a business case
for you to take action.
There will be over 30+ Holistic
Bolton Wanderers 1
Manchester United 0
Barclays Premier League
The Premier League champions
suffered their first defeat in more
than three months and their first
on Bolton soil since December
1978 when Frank Worthington
scored twice and Alan Gowling
with the other in a 3-0 Burnden
Park victory.
There was widespread speculation
about the future of Nicolas Anelka
with the January transfer window
on the horizon but he didn’t let
that bother him as he struck what
turned out to the only goal after
just eleven minutes.
Bolton frustrated United, so much
so that Alex Ferguson was sent
to the stands for the second half
after confronting refereee Mark
Clattenburg, accusing Bolton
of being over physical. Jussi
Jaaskelainen had just one shot
to save, a rasping free kick from
Owen Hargreaves as Andy O’Brien
and Abdoulaye Meite held firm in
the centre of defence.
The result lifted the Wanderers out
of the bottom three and was Gary
Megson’s first victory as manager
Thursday 15th February 2008.
Bolton Wanderers 1
Atletico Madrid 0
UEFA Cup Third Round First Leg.
(Round of 32)
This first leg victory boosted the
Wanderers confidence as, despite
lying only three points above the
30 | The Wanderer 01204 328 888
elagtion zone, the fourth best
team in Spain succumbed to a
spirited performance.
Bolton took advantage of a second
half dismissal when FIFA’s Young
Player of 2007, Sergio Aguero,
was sent off for spitting and they
also saw Diego Forlan, who didn’t
score against the Wanderers
during his time with Manchester
United, strike the post.
The visitors reeled after the
74th minute sending off and
barely a minute later Stelios
Giannakopoulos crosssed and
Matt Taylor headed on to El
Hadji Diouf who arrowed his shot
through two defenders legs and
into the net.
It was expected that Madrid would
pose a more sustained threat in
front of their own supporters a
week later but once again the
Wanderers came through with a
scorelsss draw to reach the last
sixteen.
Team: Jaaskelainen, Hunt,
Sporting Lisbon 1
UEFA Cup Fourth Round First Leg
(Round of 16)
Still to score on the domestic
front since his £1 million move
from Aston Villa, Gavin McCann
(Pictured celebrating against
Sporting), scorer of the winner
at Red Star Belgrade, doubled
his European goal tally with a
26th minute strike that stunned
Sporting. Unfortunately Simon
Vukcevic’s second half equaliser
claimed a valuable away goal to
take into the second leg which
was to prove decisive in the tie
and end Wanderers European
adventure when they went down
to a single goal defeat a week
later They had however retained
their unbeaten home record in
two seasons of UEFA Cup football.
It could have been different if
Bolton had made more of their
chances. Both McCann and Matt
Taylor missed the target when
they might have doubled the
lead before half time and Heidar
Helguson hit the bar with a header
eight minutes into the second half.
Team: Al-Habsi, Hunt, A. O’Brien,
IN THE NORTH WEST FOR
TEACHING QUALITY
ABOUT THE TRUST
JOIN THE TRUST
NEWS FROM THE
BWFCST
AS WE ENTER A NEW YEAR, WE WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME
TO THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON STADIUM TO BOTH OUR FANS AND TO OUR
VISITORS FROM PLYMOUTH AND LOOK FORWARD TO A COMPETITIVE GAME
TO START OUR HOME FIXTURES FOR 2023.
but, as we are often told, “football
is a business”.
clubs who are currently very close
to the cliff-edge.
After a recent article in the
Bolton News in which Ian Evatt
gave his overview of the club’s
approach to potential transfer
dealings in what will, again be a
very important January transfer
window, we would like to express
our appreciation of his words
regarding the sustainability of our
club.
In the article, the manager told
the Bolton News: “We want to do
things differently here, we don’t
want to take risks. We want to try
to run a sustainable football club.”
This approach is needed
throughout our football pyramid
if our national game, as we have
known and loved for many years,
is to survive. The naysayers will,
as usual, bang on about lack of
ambition and over-cautiousness,
Well, for a business to remain in
existence, it needs to balance
the books to be sustainable and
stable.
Ask Bury, Macclesfield, Southend,
Charlton, Derby and WBA fans if
they agree!
Twice in the last six years, BWFC
has also been on the brink of
oblivion. After 3yrs under the
ownership of Football Ventures,
that now appears to be no longer
on the agenda, unlike many more
Success on the field is important
to every club’s fan base. However,
that becomes irrelevant if there
isn’t actually a club to support.
As we enter 2023 in a League 1
play-off position, we continue to
support OUR club and hopefully
push them on to promotion this
season. If that doesn’t happen,
we go again next season. But at
least we know there will be a next
season.
Since your trust came into
existence seven years ago, the
relationship between the club
and trust has transitioned through
various stages. From initial hostility
and ridicule (seem like strong
words but look back at some of
the Notes from the Chairman from
2017-18) to the current positive
dialogue now in place with Sharon
and Neil, there has never been a
better time to become a BWFCST
member.
Happy New Year from all at
‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour
To mark the new season, we want to
make you aware of new measures
being taken across all of football
to ensure everyone can have a safe
and enjoyable experience. We are
supporting strong action from the
FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle
anti-social and criminal behaviours
that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of
the risks to fans and staff – pyros
can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius
and cause lifechanging injuries,
while entering the pitch endangers
players, managers and match
officials.
We know those who commit these
illegal acts do not represent the
majority of supporters.
