Food pantry doubles its space at new location

who have been involved for years and years and years,”
Mitchell said.
Pantry hours are 9-11:45 a.m. on Wednesdays and
Saturdays. No appointments are required. Customers
must be Madison County residents and meet income eligibility
requirements. First-time customers must bring
proof of address with them and are asked about their
income.
Customers receive a basic allotment of food once a
month (twice a month in emergency situations) to supplement
their household food budget.
Anyone can drop off monetary donations or food donations
during pantry hours. Monetary donations go a
Madison County Food Pantry began serving customers at its new
location on Jan. 3.
Previously located at 137 S. Maple St., London, the all-volunteer
operation moved into the former NAPA Auto Parts store at 125 S.
Oak St., London.
“We simply ran out of space at our Maple Street location,” said
John Mitchell, board member. “There has been so much increase in
demand. It’s up 25 percent over the last year, and that’s due to inflation
and just what is going on in the country right now.”
The pantry provides meat, fish, bakery items, deli items, fresh
produce, and non-perishable goods to approximately 310 families
per month.
The previous location served the organization well for many
years, Mitchell said, however, due to space limitations, customers
often had to wait outside. The new space is nearly twice the size of
the old with no need for customers to wait outside. Good lighting,
temperature control for storage and service areas, and plenty of
parking are among the new location’s attributes.
“It works like a dream. It makes an enormous difference,”
Mitchell said. “The response has been tremendous. People walk in
and go, ‘Wow!,” which is what we did, too. It’s so much more open.”
The pantry was founded in 1981 by eight area churches. Now,
10 churches are involved: Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Patrick
Catholic Church, Newport Church of Christ in Christian Union,
Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints, First United Methodist
Church of London, St. Paul AME, United Methodist Church of Newport,
Lafayette United Methodist Church, London Church of the
Nazarene, and Trinity United Methodist Church.
Funding for the pantry comes from donations
from churches, businesses, non-profit
organizations, and individuals. All proceeds
go to providing no-cost food to people in
need. The pantry is staffed entirely by volunteers.
There are no paid employees.

Fairboard contracts with new ride company

Large rides are returning to the Madison
County Fair.
At the Ohio Fair Managers Association
convention earlier this month, the Madison
County fairboard secured a contract with
Lisko Family Midway Amusements out of
Lowellville in northeast Ohio.
This year’s fair dates are Saturday, July
8 through Saturday, July 15. The ride company
will be on site July 10-15, missing the
first two days of the fair due to another commitment.
Rides will be open from 4 p.m. to
close on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and
Friday. Rides will open at 1 p.m. the last
Saturday of the fair. Kids’ Day is set for
Wednesday with rides opening at 1 p.m.; wrist bracelet
discounts will be in effect, and the rain date is Thursday.
A week-long ride wristband option is in the works.
Ride company owner Tim Lisko said he plans to
bring 10 to 12 rides to the Madison County Fair. About
half of the rides will be geared toward teens and adults.
The rest will be for children.
Paul Gross, president of the Madison County Fair
Board, is happy and relieved to have a full-fledged ride
company booked for this year’s fair.
“They’re a good, big, normal ride company,” Gross
said. “And Tim (Lisko) is a consummate professional.
He takes a business-like approach to what he does and
makes massive investments in his rides.”
Last year, the fairboard struggled to provide rides at
the fair. The company they used in 2021 went out of
business. After calling 43 companies from around the
Midwest, the board ended up booking a smaller outfit
that provided only rides for younger children.
“The carnival industry has been in turmoil,” Gross
said. “Twenty years ago, there were 28 different ride
companies in Ohio. Now, there are eight. It’s a shrinking
industry. It’s what everyone was talking about at
the (fair managers) convention.”
Lisko Family Midway Amusements has been familyowned
and operated since 1961. Tim’s father founded
the business, and now Tim, one of his sons, and his
nephews run the operation. Tim is a certified ride inspector
in Ohio and Pennsylvania and maintains a daily
inspection program for his rides.
The company provides rides for fairs, festivals, and
events throughout Ohio, including the nearby Fayette
County Fair in Washington Court House. They also
travel to events in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia,
Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and
Florida.

The percentage of adults in Madison
County who have coronary heart disease
outpaces the percentage across Ohio and the
United States. The same can be said of
Madison County adults who have hypertension
(high blood pressure), who are obese,
and who have been diagnosed with diabetes.
Statistics like these have local health,
wellness, and education agencies working
together to find ways to promote healthy behaviors
to combat chronic disease.
One goal is to improve nutrition. Information
from the United States Department
of Agriculture reveals that nearly 12 percent
of Madison County residents don’t have
access to enough food or good quality food to
meet their basic needs. Income, proximity to
food resources, and transportation are contributing
factors.
A new Local Food Council is in the early
stages of working toward the goal of improved
nutrition for Madison County residents.
The group held a community meeting
in November to gather input to guide their
efforts.

The Madison County Spelling Bee
took place on Jan. 10 at Tolles Career &
Technical Center in Plain City. Kolby
Thoman, an eighth-grader from London
Middle School, emerged as the champion.
The competition featured 42 students
in grades 5-8 from the Jonathan Alder,
London, Madison-Plains, and West Jefferson
school districts. All of the students
participated in the written test
and the oral bee. The oral bee went 12
rounds and lasted 90 minutes.
Heading into the fourth round of the
bee, 12 students were still standing. In
the 11th round, Thoman was the last
correct speller with the word “reverberant.”
He went on to win the competition
in the 12th round with the word
“reprisal.” Arabella Porter, a sixthgrader
from West Jefferson Middle
School, was the runner-up.

HARRIS
Ferrell Harris Jr., 85, of London died on
Jan. 10, 2023, in Madison Health.
Born on July 5, 1937, in Gilbert, W.Va., he
was a son of Sarah (Mayhon) and Ferrell
Harris Sr.
A U.S. Army veteran, Ferrell had retired
from the former Purex/Dial Corp. in London
as a foreman. He loved playing his guitar,
but most of all he loved his family.
Survivors include: his wife of nearly 50
years, Frances (Stumbo) Harris; children,
Robin Tipton (Chuck Ackley), Joseph
Wayne (Kim) Richey, Tena Marie Harris,
and Jerrell Ray (Amy) Harris; grandchildren,
Misty, Rusty, Staci, Sarah , and Trea’,
Heather Nicole Richey, Taylor Mason
Parker, Anna, Sam and Lilly Harris; numerous
great-grandchildren; brothers,
Clark (Dorothy) Harris and Arnold Harris;
sister, Gene Whiteside; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents
and sisters, Fay (Clell) Kauffer, Irene Hatfield,
and Jeraldine Mullins.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 16 in
Eberle-Fisher Funeral Home and Crematory,
London, with Michael Casto officiating.
Interment followed in Paint Memorial
Cemetery, London.

MAYHORN
Larry Mayhorn, 71, of London, Ohio died
on Jan. 10, 2023, in Doctors Hospital,
Columbus. Larry was born on June 18,
1951, in Charleston, W.Va.
A service technician for Solon, he was
also a self-employed upholsterer. Besides
riding motorcycles, Larry loved spending
time with his family, especially on family
camping trips.
Survivors include: his wife of 52 years,
Patti (Smith) Mayhorn; children and their
spouses, Christopher “Rusty” and Jessica
Mayhorn and Susan and Shawn Miller;
grandchildren, Christopher Dolby, Brandon
Dolby, Austin Dolby (Jordan Thacker),
Jamy (Dylan) Crace and Madison Mayhorn;
great-grandchildren, Rowan, Bradley,
Sawyer and Greyson; many other family
members and close family friend, Kim Hart.
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter,
Tricia Dolby.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held
in the springtime. The family is being

SHAMBLIN
Alisha Marie Shamblin, 26, of Circleville,
Ohio, died on Jan. 11, 2023, in Circleville.
Born on April 9, 1996, in Chillicothe, she
was a daughter of Glenda Marie (Hill) and
Denver Shamblin Jr., who precede her in
death.
Alisha walked through life like she never
knew pain. She loved freely and honestly.
She embraced fear, even traveled the world
alone. She started as a small-town girl who
didn’t want to learn to drive and quickly
grew into a world traveler with a fiancé
abroad. She knew she was loved and tethered
to us, always someone having her back
and building her confidence. The life she
lived in her short time was an adventure.
She loved cooking, sharks, video games,
drawing, felting, anime and the color green.
She always had on blue jeans and a hat, regardless
of the weather. Her goofiness, her
gentleness, her kindness will be missed by
all that knew and loved her. Our world will
be so quiet without her laughter.
Alisha is survived by: her fiancée Ben
Webb (Becky and Shaun Brothwell, Leila
Jordan and extended family and friends in
Holbeach, Lincolnshire), Jeannette, Jody,
Jarrod (Fang) Young and Grammie Char;
siblings Alaura and Melody; numerous
aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

SEEDLE
Bonnie F. Seedle, 80, of Harrodsburg,
Ky., passed away on Jan. 12, 2023. Bonnie
was born in Pendleton County, Ky., on Sept.
4, 1942, to William and Eva Belle (Roberts)
Casey.
She is survived by: her son, Richard A.
Seedle (Carol); her grandchildren, Preston
A. Seedle, Tiffany N. Gilvin (Wes); her
great-granddaughter, Piper Nicole Gilvin;
her brother, Sonny Casey (Linda); along
with multiple nieces, nephews, and adopted
family. Bonnie was preceded in death by:
her parents; her husband, Carl S. Seedle;
and her sisters, Essie Mae Patterson and
Eva Sue Kavanaug.
Bonnie’s life was a model of service. This
was reflected in her caring for elementary
students in the cafeteria at West Jefferson
schools, as well as investing her time and
talent with the West Jefferson American Legion.
Bonnie and her husband lived on Fellows
Avenue in West Jefferson for more than 40
years where they enjoyed their neighbors as
though they, too, were family. Everyone who
knew Bonnie always spoke of her smile and
how happy she always was.
Visitation and a funeral service were
held on Jan. 18 at First Baptist Church,
West Jefferson. Bonnie was laid to rest at
Deer Creek Township Cemetery in

CONWAY
Donna Eileen (Kronk) Conway, 83, of Galloway, Ohio, passed
away on Jan. 14, 2023, at Madison Health hospital. Donna was born
on March 12, 1939, in Madison County, Ohio, the daughter of Alfred
and Fern (Delashmutt) Kronk.
Donna graduated from Monroe High School in 1957. She worked
and retired from Sears Distribution Fashion Center. In 1985, she
married William (Bill) Conway. During Donna’s and her husband
Bill’s retirement years, they both worked for Coughlin Automotive
in London. Donna and Bill enjoyed clogging for Starlight Cloggers
and camping at Poor Farmer’s campground. Donna was a beautiful
and loving soul who was deeply loved by her family, friends, and all
who knew and met her.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Alfred and Fern (Delashmutt)
Kronk; her husband, Bill Conway; and her brother, Jack
Leon Kronk of West Jefferson.

was also blessed with 22 great-grandchildren and six great-greatgrandchildren,

Visitation and a service were held on Jan. 20 at Lynch Family
Funeral Home, London, with Pastor Tom Walker officiating. A gathering
took place after the service at Front Row in West Jefferson.
Donna’s services were intrusted to Lynch Family Funeral Home
and Cremation Services, London.

David E. Webb, 78, of London died on Jan. 14, 2023, at Madison
Health, London. David was born on Sept. 3, 1944, in Columbus,
Ohio, the son of Russell E. and Anna Rose (Kronk) Webb.
David graduated from London High School in 1962. He had been
a farmer for many years and retired from Madison Correctional Institution
as a building maintenance instructor. He enjoyed his retirement
years working for Coughlin Automotive in London.
He is survived by: his wife of 56 years, Janet J. Webb; daughters,
Cheryl (Doug) Lepper of Westerville, Chris Moore of Columbus,
Loni (Ramu) Reddy of Eugene, Ore., and Jan R. Jones of West Jefferson;
grandchildren, Lindsay, Ryan, Amanda, Nicole, Laura,
Maya, and Kyle; great-grandchildren, Alex, Aiden, Ainsley, Grace,
and Savannah; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
David was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Carol
Schilling; maternal grandparents who helped to raise David, Francis
and Edith Kronk; and paternal grandmother, Mary Becker.

Feb 6, 1939 – Jan 21, 2011
She was just a teen aged girl from Missouri who fell in love with a G.I. Stationed at
Ft. Leonard Wood. She had quit school during her sophomore year to go to work
to help support her widowed mother and 10 siblings. She was a little short girl
just a little over 100 lbs, but she could pack a wallop. After just knowing him for 6
weeks, her sweetheart was discharged from the army and went 2000 miles away
to seek his fortune. Little did he realize that his fortune was still sitting in Missouri.
After almost a year he saw the light, just like the prodigal son. Over the phone he
proposed to her and she said yes. A wedding was scheduled in Ohio after a Sunday
morning church service, but alas he didn't realize that the license that he got in
Missouri was only good in Missouri. On 9/11/58 they were married in a parsonage
in Missouri and on 9/14 were “married” again in West Jefferson, Ohio. She came as
just a little girl from Missouri but Oh what she became. She only had 10 years of
school, but she had the smarts and common sense to do most anything. Shortly
after the wedding she told her husband, “Don't you ever hit me, you have to go to
sleep sometime and I have an iron skillet.” She was a worker. It was a one day
honeymoon and then back to work. Two years later she presented her husband
with a beautiful daughter, three years later another one.
She quit work until the children were in school, and then she was always home
for them. She raised the children as her husband was always involved in something
that took his time, and she did a great job. When her oldest daughter became
pregnant, she said I hope it's a girl, I could never love a little boy. On February 22,
1995 Jake was born, she changed over night, they were inseparable from birth to
the time of her death 15 years later. She was tight with her money, a garage saler
and trash picker, and knew her antiques. She saved her family a lot of money and
acquired a number of valuable antiques.
She was opinionated, and spoke her mind. You either liked her or didn't. You always
knew where you stood with her. If she liked you she'd give you the shirt off
of her back, she was always for the under privileged and down trodden. Her
outspokenness must not have affected too many people her funeral was one of
the largest seen in years. She was a great organizer, she organized and would feed
over 100 people at her church dinners. She was known as “The flower Lady of West
Jefferson.” For years she planted and maintained flowers along Main Street. She
and her husband purchased a 155 year old house that was falling down, and she
made a show place of it with her flowers. In 2003 she was found with breast cancer,
it never slowed her down.
After a mastectomy and chemo it looked like it was licked. Then in 2005 it
returned, more chemo and radiation. Some thought that the radiation would slow
her down, but it seemed to energizer her and she would come back and work all
day in the flowers. At the James Cancer Hospital she got the nick name of the
Energizer Bunny. In 2008 the cancer had gone to her lungs. She was a fighter,
where ever she was she inspired people, and influenced a lot of people by her
faith. She gave hope to people who were fighting the same battle. Her quote was
“I've had a good life, I know where I'm going and I'm ready to go.” On January 21,
2011 she got her reward.
