Curro Academy Riverside students, sitting for their last exam.

By: Dumani Moyo

Email: dumanim”nsabasi-publishing.co.za

While matric exams went

on at Curro Academy

Riverside, grade 10 and 11

students celebrated the

completion of their final exams on

November 30.

The students took Mathematics Paper

2 on their last day of class. Curro

Academy Riverside is an independent

school in Riverside View, Fourways that

provides high-quality education for

learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12.

“This year, our grade eleven class is a

strong group coming for matric next

year,” said educator Khodani Maphangwa.

“So far with the grade elevens, it has

been looking good since the first term.

We are hoping to have all of them next

year. We made sure that all our students

are well prepared for their end of

year exams, especially the matric class.”

Questioned on the possibility of the

kids having an attitude towards Mathematics

subjects, Maphangwa said Both

Maths and Maths Lit are important in

life.

“Mathematics is a compulsory subject,”

she said. “So, it’s either you choose

Maths or Maths Literecy.

They are both crucial. It actually helps

when you want to apply for universities.

It is for this reason that we show the

importance of mathematics from the

lower grades.

Maths is apparently based on what a

child would want to do going forward.

Maths and Maths Lit are a great opportunity

in terms of the students’ career

path.”

As Maphangwa wished the matriculants

luck, she also wished all the kids in

grades 8 through 11 a successful return

to school the next year.

The National Senior Certificate examinations

commenced on 31 October

2022 and the Department of Basic Education

said it is pleased with how these

exams have gone.

A total of 753 964 full-time and 167 915

part-time candidates in the country

are registered to write Matrics examinations.

This is the largest cohort of

candidates to date.

SAPS DIEPSLOOT EMBRACE 16

DAYS OF ACTIVISM CAMPAIGN

Diepsloot Police engaged with various stakeholders about 16 Day of Activism.

By: Dumani Moyo

Diepsloot South African Police

Service (SAPS) partnered

with various stakeholders to

observe this year’s 16 Days of

Activism of No Violence against Women

and Children.

Department of Social Developmentment,

Department of Health, National

Prosecuting Authority and the City of

Johannesburg joined the officers to

embrace the campaign.

Every year, on November 25, the International

Day for the Elimination of

Violence Against Women, a global campaign

known as the 16 Days of Activism

against Gender-Based Violence begins.

It continues through December 10,

Human Rights Day.

During the campaign, Speakers from

various government agencies and

local non-governmental organizations

denounced plague of violence against

women and children in the community.

Survivors of GBV shared their

horrifying stories and inspired other

women to leave violent relationships.

The police officers interacted with the

community members and distributed

pamphlets that contain information on

GBV safety tips.

“As SAPS Diepsloot, we’re partnering

with local stakeholders to create

awareness about GBV,” said Diepsloot

police spokesperson Captain Tinyiko

Mathebula.

“Our collaboration with stakeholders in

the fight against women and children

abuse is an ongoing programme, which

goes beyond 16 Days of Activism.

We urge our communities to join the

fight against scourge of GBV during 16

Days of Activism and beyond.”

Two people died in a car accident

along N14 highway on 4

Decemeber 2022.

The incident took place on a

Sunday night, and Diepsloot police

are currently investigating a culpable

homicide case the 32-year-old woman

and 7-year-old girl.

The police were patrolling when they

allegedly noticed a Toyota Corolla

which capsized next to the highway,

said Diepsloot police spokesperson

Captain Tinyiko.

Stakeholders discussed different forms

of domestic violence were during the

engagements with the public.

The police urged the public to protect

victims of gender-based violence by

reporting perpetrators to the police, by

anonymously contacting Crime Stop

number, sending tip-offs via MySAPS

app or visiting any police station.

“Upon investigating, the officers

noticed a man next to the capsized

car who told them that they were

involved in an accident,” captain

Mathebula said. “The man, who had

visible injuries, allegedly told the

police that he lost control of the car

and it over turned. Two passengers, a

woman and a girl child, were d clared

dead on the scene.

Driver of the vehicle and two other

passengers survived the accident and

were taken to hospital for medical attention.

A case of culpable homicide

is under investigation.”

Riverside View community can

also develop a skills centre, like

Cosmo City’s Leadworks Foundation

Community Knowledge

Centre, where the youth can do free

computer courses.

Leadworks Foundation Community

Knowledge Centre recently awarded

certificates to 15 students at Muldersdrift’s

Umnotho Youth Development.

Leadworks Foundation is a non-profit

organization primarily aiming at youth

development through education and

information sharing.

Under this project, Leadworks has been

supported by Engen Garage Cosmo City

to offer free skills training to the youth.

The awarded students have completed

their studies in Basic Computer Skills,

Job Readiness and Office admin.

Lucky Mphela, of Leadworks Foundation,

congratulated the students for

excelling in their studies.

“I am very happy for the graduates,” he

said.

“It was a three-month course whereby

students would attend on a daily basis.

The course covered Introduction to

Computer, Microsoft Office, Internet

and Email. This is an entry level

computer course that would allow

any learner to get into the job market.

Those who are interested in Information

Technology can use these certificates

as a foundation.”

The aim is to empower the youth in

the community, Mphela said. “Without

Engen garage we were not going to be

able to bring this project into life.

We are very thankful to them. I would

like to also thank Umnotho Youth

Development for providing us with the

venue for the ceremony.”

Since we live in the world of technology,

Mphela said, it is critical for people to

learn how to use computers. “Nowadays

everything is digital. It does not

matter which industry you are in. One

way or the other you will be required to

be computer literate. We aim to ensure

that the youth of Cosmo City benefit

from this program.

We want them to benefit free of charge,

and this can only be done in collaboration

with our local businesses. This

is one way we are trying to use to fight

against crime and poverty.”

Public Works hands over

building for GBV victims

The Department of Public Works

and Infrastructure (DPWI) has

handed over another shelter for

gender-based violence (GBV) in

the Free State, as government intensifies

its efforts to curb the scourge.

DPWI Minister, Patricia de Lille, on

Thursday handed over the Koffiefontein

building to Social Development Minister,

Lindiwe Zulu.

During the joint sitting in the National

Assembly regarding GBVF in September

2019, De Lille committed that the DPWI

would allocate unoccupied Stateowned

properties for service delivery

purpose, especially to provide shelter

to victims of GBV.

The initiative was in response to the

country’s Emergency Response Plan

(ERP) on Gender-Based Violence and

Femicide.

At the time, De Lille also committed

that the DPWI would use State-owned

properties to install anti-GBV messaging

as a campaign to show government’s

solidarity with communities and

families who have been affected by the

scourge.

She said: “Since December 2019, the

department has handed over five properties

in Gauteng to the Department

of Social Development. In March 2020,

the DPWI handed 6 to the Western Cape

Department of Social Development for

use as shelters for victims of GBV.”

Since then, she said, officials from

DPWI and the National Department of

Social Development have criss-crossed

the country, assessing available DPWI

properties that could be used as shelters

for victims of GBV.

“The property here in the Free State

is now the latest to be refurbished and

handed over from DPWI to the Provincial

Department of Social Development

for GBV victims.

“Last year, the Free State Department

of Social Development stated that there

is a shortage of shelters for victims of

gender-based violence in the province

and this is the case is many other

provinces.

“As DPWI we are finalising User Agreements

with the provincial departments

of social development so that they can

have these properties for free once

DPWI refurbishes the houses to be fit

for habitation by GBV victims.”

Through the User Agreements, it was

anticipated that the provincial social

development departments would have

to appoint NGOs and operationalise the

shelters for communities.

She said the DPWI has also completed

the refurbishment of another property

in Phalaborwa in Limpopo to be handed

over to the Provincial Department of

Social Development there.

President declares 27

December a public holiday

South Africans will get to enjoy an

extended Christmas with 27 December

2022 declared as a public

holiday in lieu of Christmas Day

falling on a Sunday.

This follows a declaration to this effect

by President Cyril Ramaphosa in terms

of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act

(Act No 36 of 1994).

A statement released by the Presidency

on Thursday stated that in terms of the

2022 annual calendar, Christmas Day,

25 December, falls on a Sunday.

“In view of the unique circumstances

around the 2022 calendar, and to

uphold relevant labour law principles

and practices, President Ramaphosa

has declared Tuesday, 27 December, as

a public holiday in lieu of Christmas

Day,” the Presidency said in a statement

on Thursday.

The Presidency explained that Section

2(1) of the Public Holidays Act provides

that “whenever a public holiday falls on

a Sunday, the following Monday shall be

a public holiday”.

In this instance, the Monday following

the 25 December 2022 is another public

holiday, Day of Goodwill.

“If the holiday of Sunday 25 December

were to be moved to Monday 26 December,

this would cancel the holiday

of 26 December or cause the two holidays

– which are part of 12 paid public

holidays annually - to overlap.

“This would mean workers would only

have 11 paid public holidays in this year,

while Section 5 of the Public Holidays

Act provides that “... every employee

shall be entitled to ... at least the number

of public holidays as provided for in

this Act,” the Presidency said. –

on more than 20 other properties in

Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape, the

Northern Cape, Limpopo and KZN in

the next financial year to be handed

over to provincial departments of social

development to operationalise GBV

shelters.

“We are working with the National

Department of Social Development to

ensure that there is a shelter in all the

identified hotspots and in each municipality

and metro in the country.

As DPWI we are working hard to do our

part and contribute to the fight against

GBVF by providing safe spaces for

women and children who need somewhere

to live to escape abuse,” she said.

These shelters, said the Minister, represent

a lifeline that could save women

and children.

“They represent a new start and hopefully

a place of healing. We are committed

to pushing our work in this regard

and will be handing over more shelters

in other provinces in the coming

months.

“DPWI is also making good progress

with installing anti-GBVF billboards at

police stations in hot spot areas across

the country with 20 billboards installed

in seven provinces,” she said.

In this regard, the Department recently

installed billboards at Bloemspruit, Zamdela,

Thabong and Phuthadichaba police

stations in the Free State.

“We are also finalising the installation of

more billboards by the end of this year in

the Western Cape at the Caledon, Bredasdorp,

Lainsburg, Paarl and Beaufort West

police stations.

Next year, the DPWI will instal billboards

at police stations in hotspot areas in Limpopo

and the Eastern Cape, the only two

remaining provinces. – SAnews.gov.za

Johannesburg, 6 December 2022 –

Volkswagen is proudly hosting the

inaugural VW Vaya Cup Tournament,

as part of the ongoing commitment

to driving youth development

through soccer in South Africa.

The tournament will take place from

9 - 11 December 2022 at the University

of Witwatersrand. A total of 16 under 13

boys’ and eight under 16 girls’ soccer

teams will be battling it out with the

hopes of being crowned the first VW

Vaya Cup Champions.

“Volkswagen has been supporting

soccer development initiatives for over

20 years. At Volkswagen we believe

that sport in South Africa, specifically

soccer, is more than a game, a passion

point, career dream or spectator hobby;

it has the power to play a beneficial

role in youth development which helps

to facilitate individual and team growth

growing affinity for the T SUV model

range.

“In November, we increased passenger

car sales in the local market by 10%

when compared to November 2021.

Volkswagen Passenger Car Brand.

Launching this year, the VW Vaya Cup

provides a platform for young soccer

players, both boys and girls, to upskill,

develop and showcase their talents,

while also driving meaningful life skills

and the invaluable lessons of teamwork.

Previously known as the VW Junior

the decision to localise the tournament

and thus renamed and rebranded it to

the ‘VW Vaya Cup’. With ‘Vaya’ meaning

‘to go’, the local initiative speaks to

Volkswagen’s commitment to ‘Move

popularity in the local market.

“The Volkswagen T SUV model range

was bolstered by the market introduction

of the new Taigo, new T-Roc, new

Tiguan Allspace and new Tiguan R this

year. In the first 11 months of 2022, we

sold a total 16 062 T SUVs in the local

market, which means that 30% of Volkswagen’s

overall passenger car sales

this year were SUVs,” added Knapp.

In the first 11 months of 2022, T-Cross

sales saw a significant increase of 44%

year-on-year with 9 695 units sold;

making it Volkswagen’s best-selling

imported vehicle. The T-Cross was

followed by the Tiguan range with 2 334

units sold and the recently- launched

T-Roc and Taigo with 2 143 and 1 739

units sold respectively. 151 Touaregs

were sold in the local market during the

the first 11 months of 2022. The Polo

was Volkswagen’s second best-selling

vehicle this year with a total of 14 212

units sold. The T-Cross rounded up

Volkswagen’s trio of best-selling vehicles

with 9 695 units sold.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles

delivered 4 791 vehicles to customers in

the first 11 months of 2022. The Amarok

double cab was the best-selling

model with1 823 units sold in the first

11 months of 2022 and accounted for

almost 40% of the Brand’s sales.

The Kariega manufacturing plant also

exported 94 049 Volkswagen Polos to

38 international countries during the

same period.

2023 will see the Volkswagen brand

range-topping Polo Vivo GT derivative.

For Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles,

2023 will be an important year with the

market introduction of the highly anticipated

This year’s winners will not only walk

away with the coveted title of VW Vaya

Cup Champions, they will also win

Morocco head into Saturday’s

last-eight clash with Portugal

knowing they are only

one step away from making

history as Africa’s first World Cup

semifinalists, but they face a buoyant

opposition fresh from scoring six goals

against Switzerland.

Walid Regragui’s Moroccans are in

uncharted territory after a surprise run

which saw them finish top of Group

F after beating Belgium and Canada

before a stunning victory over Spain on

penalties in the last 16.

The Atlas Lions are only the fourth

African side to reach the quarterfinals

– after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in

2002 and Ghana in 2010.

Morocco have enjoyed the vast majority

of support from the crowds at all their

games in Qatar and that is likely to be

the case again at Al Thumama Stadium.

“I think it’s impossible for us to do this

without the fans,” said coach Regragui

after knocking out Spain.

“A lot of fans came to Qatar from a lot of

countries – America, Europe, Morocco.

“They love their country and what I

can tell them is this – we can do nothing

without them, I need them for the

quarters and, hopefully, we’ll make

history.”

There has still never been a country

from outside Europe or South America

in a World Cup final, but Morocco want

to put that right.

“Why not aim for the sky? We needed

to change and we needed to change

our mentality,” Regragui said after the

group stage.

Morocco chasing World

Cup history against

free-scoring Portugal

Walid Regragui’s Moroccans, face Portugal on Saturday.

“We’re not going to stop here. We’re

going to respect every opponent. But

we are going to be very difficult opponents.

So why not dream about lifting

that trophy?”

Morocco are unbeaten in seven matches

since Regragui took over from the

sacked Vahid Halilhodzic in August.

They have conceded only once in that

time, an own goal against Canada.

Morocco have overcome several injury

problems to get this far in Qatar, with

full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Noussair

Mazraoui carrying knocks for most of

the tournament.

Centre-back Nayef Aguerd hobbled off

injured against Spain, while captain Romain

Saiss soldiered on despite picking

up an injury during extra time.

“Since the start of the competition,

we’ve been playing with a team that’s

not 100 per cent, that’s why it’s even

more extraordinary,” said Regragui.

“We’ve managed to create a family, and

we feel that we have a people behind

us.”

PORTUGAL, RONALDO ‘UNITED’

Spain struggled to create any clearcut

chances against the dogged North

Africans but Portugal will be a different

proposition after a fluid attacking display

against the Swiss.

Coach Fernando Santos took the big

decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo to

the bench, but it paid dividends as the

superstar striker’s replacement Goncalo

Ramos scored a hat-trick in the 6-1

rout.

Portugal are in the World Cup quarterfinals

for the first time since 2006,

when they beat England on penalties

before being knocked out by France.

They beat Ghana and Uruguay in the

group stage before losing to South Korea,

but without Ronaldo in the line-up,

Portugal’s attacking players appeared

freer against Switzerland.

The 21-year-old Ramos stole the

headlines, while Bernardo Silva, Bruno

Fernandes and Joao Felix all impressed.

Media reports claimed Ronaldo threatened

to leave the squad after being left

out of the starting XI but he insisted the

squad remain “united”.

“It’s a group too united to be broken

by outside forces,” he wrote on social

media.

“A nation too courageous to let itself be

frightened by any adversary. A team in

the truest sense of the word, which will

fight for the dream until the end.”

Santos had expressed his displeasure at

Ronaldo’s reaction to being substituted

against South Korea but said he left the

five-time Ballon d’Or winner out for

tactical reasons on Tuesday.

Even as a replacement, Ronaldo, who

has never scored in a World Cup knockout

match, could play a crucial role.

“Ronaldo and I never confuse the

human and personal aspect with the

coach and player relationship. He is a

very important player to have in the

team,” said Santos.

The prize for the winners is a semifinal

against England or France and the

chance to reach the World Cup final for

the first time.

‘Proud’ Surinamese back

Dutch World Cup stars

From the Netherlands to Suriname,

pride is swelling at the

number of Dutch players in

Friday’s World Cup quarterfinal

who trace their roots to the South

American former colony.

On a pitch beneath the Amsterdam

tower blocks where they grew up, two

young friends of Surinamese origin

practise free kicks and dream of

wearing the Netherlands’ famed orange

jersey.

“We’re people of colour ourselves.

It’s good that people of colour have

been so successful. We’re proud,” says

Nigel Marengo, 18, a junior player for

Heerenveen, a club whose first team is

in the Eredivisie.

They idolise Dutch players like Virgil

van Dijk, born in the Dutch city of

Breda to a Dutch father and Surinamese

mother; Denzel Dumfries, whose

mother is from Suriname and whose

father is from Aruba, the Caribbean island

that is part of the Kingdom of the

Netherlands; and Xavi Simons, whose

father is of Surinamese descent.

Marengo and his friends will cheer

on the “Oranje” against Argentina on

Friday, in a match that he says will be

tough but winnable, largely thanks to

Van Dijk in defence.

“I’m happy that he chose to play for the

Netherlands” instead of Suriname, the

tiny Caribbean coast nation ranked 139

by Fifa, adds Marengo.

His friend Divayo Olf, 18, says that

while it “drags down Suriname in

terms of football... they were all born

here or grew up here and they all started

their careers here, so I understand

their choice”.

The Netherlands boasts a long line of

footballing legends with Surinamese

heritage, from Ruud Gullit and Frank

Rijkaard in the 1980s to Clarence Seedorf

and Edgar Davids in the 1990s.

Netherlands defender, Virgil van Dijk,

born in the Dutch city of Breda to a

Dutch father and Surinamese mother.
