With picturesque views of rolling farm fields, colorful maplewood forests and (of course) outstanding waterfronts, there is something foreveryone near Dent.Located on Highway 108 in the true heart of lakes country, visitors willbe hard-pressed to find another small community offering such a fantasticvariety of family-owned eateries, shopping and resorts. Bringing People TogetherBy Missy HermesAlthough the school bell no longer rings in thisfamiliar brick building, the laughter and voicesof children and adults still do. The former Dent elementaryschool now serves as a community hub, a fabulous reuseof a cherished local landmark.With the motto of “Bringing People Together,” residentshave rallied to create a recreational resource center.The Dent Community Club serves a wide area.Although membership in the club had dwindled fora time, the committee has grown from just 5-7 folks toover 20 today.And they are busy planning. As a non-profit organizationproviding, “opportunities to promote, develop andmaintain social, educational and recreational activities,”the Dent Community Club keeps health and wellnessgoals in mind.The City of Dent maintains an exercise and weight roomopen to the public. The school gymnasium is used bypeople looking for a game of basketball, pickleball, andwalkers. A local Quilts of Valor chapter meets here alongwith other community groups like the American Legion.The space also serves as a space for celebrations like familyreunions, graduation parties, or large family gatherings.Encouraging opportunities to connect, volunteer andbusinesswoman Tammy Monson says, “We’re addingmore activities.” In 2023 Monson is looking forward toa Halloween activity joining the Christmas Market thathosts over 30 vendors and artists, Santa Day, the FiestaDinner and Dent Corn Daze.The big summer gathering has been rejuvenated by theexpanding participation in the Dent Community Club.Their signature summer festival has been renamed DentCorn Daze and will feature a corn feed, corn hole tournamentand car show on Saturday, August 19, 2023. The kidfavorite Bubble Race will make a return along with foodtrucks. To cap off the celebration, the band Tripwire willtake stage on Saturday night at the Dougout Bar & Grill.True to the goal of “bring people together,” organizersare planning their first ever all-School Reunion. Formerstudents, teachers and staff will gather to share history,memories and take a huge group photo. Once again, theDent’s school will help gather the community.29
