HELLO & WELCOME
4
LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND
Following my brain surgery in July last year, I
tested positive for Covid just before Christmas.
Not only did this mean that I could not lead any
services at all over Christmas, but I could not
even attend church. At Christmas, this felt just
plain wrong!
I was incredibly grateful to those who took over
to lead the services I had prepared and who
read the sermons I had written.
However, with last year’s health scare very
much on my mind, when it came to celebrating
the New Year I was simply grateful to God that I
had survived to see a New Year.
On June 15th, 2023, my wife Carole and I will
celebrate 38 years of happy married life. How
she has put up with me for that long, I will never
know!
She jokingly reminded me recently that I don’t
often buy her flowers these days - something
that I need to rectify! Despite this, I do like
to think of myself as a bit of a romantic. After
all, February is possibly the most romantic of
months as it includes St Valentine’s Day, but do
you know who St Valentine was?
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica
St. Valentine, (died 3rd century, Rome;
feast day February 14), name of one or two
legendary Christian martyrs whose lives
seem to be historically based. Although
the Roman Catholic Church continues to
recognize St. Valentine as a saint of the
church, he was removed from the General
Roman Calendar in 1969 because of the
lack of reliable information about him. He
is the patron saint of lovers, epileptics, and
beekeepers.
By some accounts, St. Valentine was a
Roman priest and physician who suffered
martyrdom during the persecution of
Christians by the emperor Claudius II
Gothicus about 270. Other narratives identify
him as the bishop of Terni, Italy, who was
martyred, apparently also in Rome, and
whose relics were later taken to Terni. It is
possible these are different versions of the
same original account and refer to only one
person.
According to legend, St. Valentine signed
a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s
daughter, whom he had befriended and
healed from blindness. Another common
legend states that he defied the emperor’s
orders and secretly married couples to spare
the husbands from war.
Returning to my own romantic credentials,
some of you may know that I love singing
karaoke, and particularly the songs of Elvis.
In particular, I enjoy some of his romantic
ballads such as “Love Me Tender”, “Can’t Help
Falling in Love” and “The Wonder of You”. I
have acutely embarrassed Carole on several
occasions by singing “The Wonder of You” to
her during a karaoke night in a pub.
The opening words are
When no-one else can understand me
When everything I do is wrong
You give me hope and consolation
You give me strength to carry on
And you’re always there to lend a hand
In everything I do
That’s the wonder
The wonder of you
And the song ends with these words
Iver Parish Magazine - February 2023
I guess I’ll never know the reason why
You love me as you do
That’s the wonder
The wonder of you
These words absolutely reflect how I feel about
my wife, but in many ways they also reflect
how I feel about God
When no-one else can understand me
When everything I do is wrong
You give me hope and consolation
You give me strength to carry on
I guess I’ll never know the reason why
You love me as you do
That’s the wonder
The wonder of you
I am reminded here of the words of that
wonderful hymn “Amazing Grace” written by
the former slave trader John Newton.
Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.
It has often been said that GRACE stands for
“God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense”, as Jesus
willingly died on a cross and rose again to
restore our relationship with God.
In John 3:16 we read “For God so loved the
world that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but
have eternal life.”
However much we may feel that we love
another person, nothing can compare with the
love that God has for us.
As a church, we are trying to reflect God’s love
in all that we do. That is why, since 9th January
of this year we have been operating a “Warm
Space” in the Annexe at St Peter’s Church on
a Monday morning from 11am to 2pm, offering
free tea, coffee, biscuits and soup and a roll.
We seek to offer a warm space, warm food
and a warm welcome”
The most popular Bible reading at church
weddings is from 1 Corinthians 13
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not
envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It
does not dishonour others, it is not selfseeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps
no record of wrongs. Love does not delight
in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always
protects, always trusts, always hopes,
always perseveres.
Sadly, the love that I show towards my wife
often falls far short of this very high standard,
but these verses accurately describe God’s
constant love for us.
Many of us will face physical, emotional or
financial difficulties during 2023, but when you
put your trust in Jesus then the words of verse
3 of “Amazing Grace” become a wonderful
reality
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come:
‘tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
ARE WE ALL JUST TOO BUSY?
During the 29 years that I worked in Aviation
Insurance and Reinsurance in the City of
London, there were times when there seemed
to be an unspoken competition to see who
could work the longest hours. People would
pride themselves on how early they would
arrive in the office, sometimes as early as
7am. Many would then work until 7pm.
On one occasion, I was even in the office until
1am in the morning. I was forced to wake the
security guards to unlock the front gates of the
office complex so I could leave! Everybody
else in my office had gone home hours before.
A few months later I was admitted to hospital
with a suspected heart attack, but thankfully
it turned out to be Viral Pericarditis. However,
it made me realise that working such long
hours was not doing me any good. After that,
I endeavoured to leave the office no later than
7pm, and tried not to take work home with me.
Even now, I find myself falling back into old,
bad habits. Last week I found myself working
at my desk in the Vicarage until 12.30am on
two occasions. Obviously, there are times
when it is necessary to work longer hours but
doing this regularly is not good for your body
and soul, nor for those around you.
My wife Carole and I had a week off starting
on New Year’s Eve and spent time with
friends. It was great. We also took time to
read a book entitled “The Ruthless Elimination
of Hurry”, with the subtitle “How to stay
emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the
chaos of the modern world”. It was written
by a young and highly successful American
church leader called John Mark Comer, first
published in 2019 *. It was recommended by
a number of church leaders in the New Wine
network of which I am a member, and so the
book made its way onto my Christmas list.
In it, the author talks about 10 symptoms of
what he calls “hurry sickness”
1. Irritability
2. Hypersensitivity – minor things quickly
escalating to major emotional events
3. Restlessness – can’t rest, relax, or focus
on just one thing at a time
4. Workaholism (or just non-stop activity) –
your drugs of choice are accomplishment
and accumulation, leaving nothing left at
the end of the day for loved ones.
5. Emotional numbness – Empathy for
others is a rare feeling
6. Out-of-Order Priorities – always getting
sucked into the tyranny of the urgent, not
the important. Your life is reactive, not
proactive.
7. Lack of care for your body - not enough
time for sleep, exercise or healthy food
8. Escapist behaviours – over-eating, overdrinking,
binge watching Netflix, browsing
social media – name your preferred
cultural narcotic.
9. Slippage of spiritual disciplines e.g.,
daily prayer and Bible study and weekly
worship with others
10. Isolation – you feel disconnected from
God, others and your own soul.
I read out this list (without the descriptions)
in church a couple of weeks ago as part of
my sermon, and afterwards several people
said that they could recognise many of these
symptoms in their own lives.
In chapter 3, “A brief history of speed”, he
quotes some incredible and somewhat
alarming statistics including (on page 36)
“A recent study found that the average
iPhone user touches his or her phone 2,617
times a day” (quoting from Business Insider,
July 13, 2016).
Yes, you did read that correctly - 2,617 times
every day!
Following the Prologue entitled “Autobiography
of an epidemic” the book is divided into three
parts
Part one: “The problem”, with chapters
including “Hurry, the great enemy of the
spiritual life” and “Something is deeply wrong”
Iver Parish Magazine - February 2023
On page 53 the author says this
“Hurry kills all that we hold dear: spirituality,
health, marriage, family, thoughtful work,
creativity, generosity … name your value.
Hurry is a sociopathic predator loose in our
society”.
Two pages later he goes on
“The mind is the portal to the soul, and
what you fill your mind with will shape the
trajectory of your character. In the end,
your life is no more than the sum of what
you give your attention to. That bodes well
for the apprentices of Jesus who give the
bulk of their attention to him and to all that
is good, beautiful, and true in his world.
But not for those who give their attention to
the 24-7 news cycle of outrage and anxiety
and emotion-charged drama or the nonstop
feed of celebrity gossip, titillation, and
cultural drivel”
Part Two “The solution”
Much of this part of the book is centred around
the invitation of Jesus in Matthew 11 v 28-30
28
“Come to me, all you who are weary and
burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take
my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I
am gentle and humble in heart, and you will
find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is
easy and my burden is light.” (NIV Bible)
There is also another version of these verses
in the Message Bible (a paraphrase version),
which I particularly like
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on
religion? Come to me. Get away with me
and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you
how to take a real rest. Walk with me and
work with me—watch how I do it. Learn
the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay
anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep
company with me and you’ll learn to live
freely and lightly.”
Chapters in this part of John Mark Comer’s
book include “Hint: the solution isn’t more
time”, “The secret of the easy yoke” and “What
we’re really talking about is a rule of life”. The
problem is not that we don’t have enough time,
is that we all “waste” time on things that don’t
really matter.
After an “Intermission” entitled “Wait, what are
the spiritual disciplines again?”, he concludes
the book with
Part Three: “Four practices for unhurrying
your life”
In separate chapters he lists these as “Silence
and Solitude”, “Sabbath”, “Simplicity” and
“Slowing”.
Although the book includes a number of
American illustrations which don’t always
translate easily into our culture, I believe
that the author writes with a great deal of
God-given wisdom. I would not necessarily
go along with every single one of his
recommendations, for example the ditching
of the TV. Instead, I need to take the good
advice and put it into practice in my own life!
The book is guided by the teaching and
practice of Jesus. On page 89 the author
points out
“If there’s anything you pick up from reading
the four Gospels, it’s that Jesus was rarely
in a hurry”
Jesus was constantly in demand and had
a very full schedule but was always fully
“present” with those around him. Even
when his schedule was “interrupted”, which
happened regularly, he still gave freely of his
time and full attention, because he had “gaps”,
“buffers” or “margins” built into his schedule“.
We need the same. However, he also took
time to be on his own with his heavenly Father
and to pray, in order to sustain him in his
ministry.
Although the book is written very much from a
Christian perspective, I think there is much we
can all learn from it, whether we are people of
religious faith or not.
I quite like being busy, but if this is an adjective
we are regularly using to describe our lives
(almost as a boast), then perhaps we are “too
busy”
BATTLE OF BRITAIN BUNKER AND VISITOR
CENTRE
For a fascinating day out without travelling
further than Uxbridge, a visit to the Battle of
Britain Bunker and Visitor Centre is highly
recommended. It has been high on my list
of things to do for years, but I finally bit the
bullet as another dull November day dawned.
Many readers will have seen the classic 1969
film “The Battle of Britain” starring Lawrence
Olivier and Trevor Howard and will be familiar
with the actual bunker and map table which
featured prominently in the film. It was well
worth the climb down and back up the 76 steps
- the bunker is some 60 feet below ground !
Definitely worth its designation as a Grade One
listed building.
Park’s planning, foresight, leadership
and tactics during that Summer of 1940
undoubtedly saved this country from invasion
and defeat. Amazingly, he did it all over again
in the defence of Malta in 1942! Had Malta
fallen we would have lost the Mediterranean,
North Africa and the Suez Canal. For me, he
is second only to Lord Nelson on my list of
our greatest military heroes. A larger than life
statue to Keith Park stands proudly outside the
visitor complex.
A highly knowledgeable guide explained the
workings of the Bunker and the many lights
and indicators around the room, a tribute to
the foresight of its designers – in particular
Air Vice Marshal Keith Park, (Trevor Howard
in the film) commander of No 11 Group RAF
which was responsible for the air defence of
South East England. The photo below shows
the observation and control room, from which
Churchill observed the climax of the battle on
15th September 1940.
In order to fully appreciate how the bunker
worked in reality, The Battle of Britain film is a
truly accurate depiction of the procedures and
how the plotters moved the formation symbols
across the map table. This remarkable film also
used many real period aircraft for the flying
sequences and during the production. Both
the bunker and the film truly represent and pay
tribute to the young pilots who took to the skies
day after day in that fateful summer of 1940 to
defend the nation.
much been owed by so many to so few”
TOP TIPS FOR CLEANING A COOKER
If cleaning your cooker is a job you put off for
months, get stuck in with these top tips on how
to make this unpopular job a little easier.
Let’s face it, not many of us can claim to love
cleaning. But what’s the worst cleaning job in
your home? Does the thought of scrubbing
the toilet leave your hands trembling? Or
does rolling your sleeves up to tackle the dirty
dishes leave you dismayed? There’s certainly
one job that makes those tasks look like a joy
and that’s cleaning the oven.
As many people will admit, it’s one of the worst
chores in the house, which is why we often
put it off for months. Before you find another
fantastic excuse as to why having a spick and
span oven is not a priority right now, we’re
going to help you out. No, we’re not promising
to send a team of professionals around to
do it for you while you put your feet up with a
cuppa. But we are going to share some top
tips from home appliance manufacturers Beko
that might make the job a little bit easier. And
for those of you that have never ever tackled
the cleaning of an oven (and we know you’re
out there) then here’s how to do it.
First and foremost, you have to think of
your hands, so grab a pair of rubber gloves.
Make sure that the kitchen has plenty of
ventilation too as you’re likely to be using
strong cleaning fluids and so a bit of fresh air
won’t go amiss. Secondly, you’ll probably find
that most modern cookers have stay-clean
linings – leave these alone. You don’t want to
damage them. If your oven has normal enamel
linings and oven floors you can apply an oven
cleaning product to them.
Next, a handy tip is to put a bowl of tap water
in the oven and then switch it on to a high
temperature for about 20 minutes. This will
help loosen up all that nasty dirt and grease.
Now you’ll need to remove all those grotty
baked on deposits. A metal spatula or a
ceramic hob scraper should do the trick, but be
careful not to damage anything. Once you’ve
done that, then you can tackle the rest of the
mess with oven cleaner spray. Another handy
hint – if your oven door is glass and it can be
removed then do so and soak it in a solution of
biological washing powder. Clever stuff.
Once your oven is looking sparkly it’s time
to make your hob so clean that you could
eat your dinner right off it – although that’s
not really recommended. The hob should
be cool before you tackle any of the grime
on it and make sure your pinkies are still
protected by the rubber gloves. Remember
that some pan supports and spillage wells will
be dishwasher proof. If that’s the case, save
yourself a whole lot of effort by putting them in
the dishwasher. If you’re not sure they will be
safe in there, then just as effective is a damp
cloth and a suitable cream cleaner. To remove
any burnt-on grease splashes behind your
hob, you can use a solution of sugar soap,
which is available from most DIY stores or
supermarkets.
But if all these tips have left you with even
less desire to go running into the kitchen
and tackling that great cooking beast then
remember this – you could always pay
someone else to do it by checking the internet
for the most competitive domestic oven
cleaning services near you.
IVER CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL &
MARKET 2022 & DATES FOR 2023
This event is always one of the highlights of
our calendar and this year did not disappoint!
There were over 40 beautiful trees decorating
St Peter’s Church, all entered by our local
schools, pre schools and nurseries, local
groups, clubs, societies, businesses, families
and individuals. We are always amazed at the
amount of thought and creativity that goes into
each and every tree, no two of which ever look
the same. We believe this year’s festival may
have been one of our busiest, with a constant
stream of visitors receiving a warm welcome,
delighting in the display of decorations and
twinkling lights of the trees, and enjoying
a good chatter over some delicious festive
refreshments.
was back for its sixth year on Saturday 3rd
December, running alongside the Christmas
Tree Festival in the church. The market was
busy throughout the day with people looking
for those extra Christmas gifts. We had some
fabulous new stallholders this year as well
as some popular returning stallholders from
previous years. Visitors have been very
complimentary on the lovely products for sale,
offering an array of fabulous gift ideas for all
the family. Our stallholders were delighted
with the event and one commented on what a
lovely community Iver is!
The ‘Real Christmas Grotto’ was enjoyed by
many children, and each child was able to take
a Christmas story book away with them as a
reminder of the real Christmas story.
So many wonderful comments have been
received including how ‘this has really started
Christmas for me’ and ‘it looks beautiful, and
sitting among the trees gave me a real sense
of peace’.
The Iver Christmas Market held in the St
Peter’s Centre, next door to the church
We owe a great deal of thanks to the months
of planning and hard work of the Social &
Fundraising team, and of course the event
would not have been possible without those
who volunteered their help in any way
during the weekend, to whom we extend
a huge thank you. The event could not run
successfully without you all!
Plans are already underway for the 2023 Iver
Christmas Tree Festival which will take place
from 1st to 3rd December, with the Christmas
Market running on Saturday 2nd December.
Please add these dates to your diaries and
calendars, we would love for you to be a part
of the Festival in 2023. We know some people
who are already planning the design of their
tree for this year! For further information,
