FROM THE
PUBLISHER
“It Starts with
Respect”
A common question I get when being interviewed by
the media is, “What is Montessori?” sometimes followed
by, “Can you sum up Montessori in one word?”
Channeling Aretha Franklin, It didn’t take me long to
come up with that word: R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Something the
world could use more of. Something that parents want
to build and foster in both themselves and their children.
But does the world really need another resource
guide?
In a word, yes. Here’s why:
Today’s parents take their job especially seriously
because of several existential threats facing humanity: climate change, threat of nuclear war,
epidemics, and the rise of world-wide anti- democratic authoritarianism, to name a few. You
might be surprised to learn that I’m not a gloom-and-doomer. In fact, I’m an optimist. With
lots of good company, namely, parents, who are building a better world one child at a time.
Today’s parents are the ones who will save humanity by bringing up children who will treat
themselves, each other, and the environment with respect. Our goal is to bring them tools to
do that with excellence.
Montessori philosophy and tools provide a road map that brings respect into our families and
communities. Affectionately named Froggy’s, this resource guide is unique because it brings
together in one place vetted Montessori resources to empower parents and their children.
I hope you enjoy perusing and sharing Froggy’s with as much fun and excitement we had putting
it together.
With warm regards and the utmost respect for today’s parents,
Larry Shiller, Publisher

LETTER
FROM THE
EDITOR
I grew up by a river. As a child, I’d crouch barefoot
in its muddy banks, scanning the surface of the
water for the eyes of a frog amidst the speckled algae.
I liked how their legs moved in the same way as my
thumbs, and the feeling of their cold skin on my hands. I remember my excitement, the
midday sun on my back, the birds singing what sounded like the first two notes of Dexy’s
Midnight Runner’s “Come on Eileen” to each other.
This is Montessori.
Frogs were my teacher, and remain a symbol of the Montessori philosophy to me. This
resource guide serves a similar purpose: to promote and provide tools that encourage
child-centered, hands-on, playful, experiential learning rooted in respect, observation,
freedom, and independence.
Rising Stars is on a journey that follows the Montessori path. Our inaugural issue of
Froggy’s empowers more meaningful connections and experiences within and across
families. Montessori promotes quality over quantity, the journey over the destination. As
with my time by the river, the meaningfulness of my engagement with the frogs was about
being present in a shared space. Our resource guide is a microcosm of this philosophy. It
is a collection of safe, vetted, high quality, environmentally conscious, family-oriented
resources where people can come together to enhance their parenting journeys. The time
you spend with this guide will improve the quality of time spent with your children.
In uniting these resources, we hope to unite parents, and in doing so, cultivate a larger
Montessori community. Froggy’s is then a manifestation of our hopes for the future as
well: to create a society that values connection, respect, process, and presence; and a
generation of children who inhabit a world where everyone belongs.
You have so much to look forward to, in this guide and in life at large. We are excited to be
on this journey with you!

Have a Wild Time with Early Speech and Reading Skills
Wildlife in Winter Nomenclature Cards
Language development is a key part of Montessori education. Learning to read, often quite early,
draws many parents to the Montessori method. Nomenclature cards are a wonderful way to make
learning to identify new object and words fun for preschool children.
Nomenclature cards, also known as 3-part cards, are cards with a picture and a word or phrase
underneath the picture. They are used to help with reading, language development, vocabulary,
object identification, matching, and more. Typically first introduced in preschool, nomenclature
cards can be used throughout elementary school.
Families could make cards of relative’s faces and names, landmarks, and locations in their area, or
pets and favorite objects.
To get started with nomenclature cards with your little one, download the free Wildlife in Winter
Nomenclature Cards from Froggy’s Montessori and follow the simple steps below. We recommend
printing the cards on cardstock, as that will hold up better to little hands.
The blue lines are cutting lines. They are thick enough that if you cut along the outside edge of that,
you’ll still have an attractive blue border to the set.
For each animal in a set there is:
• A control card with an image and the written name below the picture
• A picture card with simply the image and no label (word)
• A separated label (word) card with no picture
Work from left to right, imitating the way we read.
PAGE 11 | FROGGY’S
For introducing the set to a preschool or prereading child:
1. Lay the whole picture card of one card in front of the child, saying the name on the card. “This is a
bison.”
2. Have the child repeat what you have said. “Say with me, bison.”
3. Repeat with two more cards, one at a time, until you have three cards out.
4. Rearrange the three cards. Ask your child to point to identify the cards. “Can you show me the
polar bear?” Repeat with the other two cards.
5. Rearrange the three cards again. Pointing to an animal ask, “What is this?” If your child is unable to
give the name, tell them the name again and ask them to repeat it.
6. Repeat the above steps, adding three new cards each time (building on the knowledge previously
gained), until all cards in the set have been introduced.
7. Repeat until the child has closure.
For an early or transitional reader:
1. After the above, choose three picture cards with the
labels. Place the labels in a random stack at the top of
the work area. Place three picture cards in a row. Place
the three control cards in pile upside down off to the
side of the mat. Demonstrate matching the labels to
the pictures, then using the control cards to check
your work for accuracy.
2. Rearrange the cards and invite your child to try.
3. Repeat as needed until the child has closure.
Additional activities:
Pair two sets of the control cards can to create a Wildlife in Winter Matching Game.
Use the cards as a launching point to learn more about the animals and their habitats.

5 TIPS FOR
INFANT CARE
1. Check your furnace, carbon monoxide, and smoke detectors.
In most of the country, a heat source is needed in the home to keep temperatures
comfortable. If you have do not DIY your furnace or heat pump service be sure to
schedule that service with a professional. December and January are peak months for
house fires. Making sure your heat source is safe and properly functioning can help keep
you safe. Do you have smoke detectors in every room and carbon monoxide detectors
on every level and sleeping area? If not install them. Carefully follow the manufacturer
instructions. If you do, change their batteries. Either way, be sure to test them and make
sure they are doing their job. All of this will help you sleep better at night.
2. Use your humidifier.
Now we have your home safely warm and toasty, let’s keep it humidified. Turn
on your humidifier. It will help your baby sleep more comfortably and help to
keep the mucus lining moist. That helps to keep invading viruses and bacteria
from invading.
PAGE 21 | FROGGY’S
3. Dress your baby in layers.
It can be tempting to put a cozy heavy blanket onto
your baby in winter time. Layers keep your baby warm
but also help prevent overheating - especially when
going in and out of locations that can have drastically
different temperature. Layers also work for sleep time.
Remember that blanks, pillows, and other bedding
poses a SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) risk
to your child. Hats are another potential suffocation
hazard during sleep. A sleep sacks is a good alternative
to a blanket layer.
4. Spend time outdoors.
The winter blues are real. You can help avoid them by
getting outdoors. Anything other than the bitterest
temperatures are safe for infants with the right layers
and attention. In addition to being a natural mood
booster, getting outdoors is a boost to your immunity
too. Most people in the northern hemisphere are
Vitamin D deficient in the winter months, a crucial
component to the strength of your immune system.
Remember, healthy habits start young!
5. Don’t buckle-in bundled up!
You picke out the most ADORABLE baby winter
coat. You KNOW baby will be toasty and comfortable
braving the elements. That, or any other bulky item,
should be removed before strapping your baby into the
carseat. A good reminder is that any item not included
with your carseat was not crash-tested. Remover extra
layers, secure the straps, they tuck a coat or blanket
over the straps. Avoid putting anything over your
baby’s face and don’t leave your baby unattended in
the car or the carseat. It can be tempting to leave a
sleeping infant in the snapout carseat carrier, but that
can be a suffocation hazard too.

Winter Family Films to Stream
when You’re Under the Weather
In positive parenting circles, a common goal is limiting–or even eliminating–screen time.
That is a worthy pursuit. Flu season is upon us. We all hope we do not come down with a
particularly bad case of it, one that has our head to the pillow for days at a time. If that
does happen, some screen time can help get us through that rough spot.
Having a selection of quality programming in advance can help you make the most it.
There are some well-known family classics:
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion; the Witch; & the Wardrobe
March of the Penguins Eight Below Snow Buddies
Snow Dogs Happy Feet Mr. Popper’s Penguins
Here are some lesser known, curated selections available on streaming:

WE WANT TO FEATURE YOUR CHILDIN THE FROGGY’S
MONTESSORI MASTERPIECE CHILDREN’S ART SHOW
CASE!
(And an Open-Ended Art Project to Get You Started)
Do you know a budding young artist? We’re looking for creations full of passion, not perfection.
Inspire an open-ended art project with a masterpiece, give them the tools, and walk away. Their
take, rather than a step-by-step process of replication, is what we are looking for. A new young
master artwork will be featured in each issue of Froggy’s Montessori Family Resource Guide, as
well as the Rising Stars Foundation website and social media. It is fitting that a publication for the
benefit of children showcase the work of children!
Examples of masterpieces are shown below, but any masterpiece may be chosen for inspiration.
Winter Scene Activity Inspired by Claude Monet’s Snow at Argenteuil Snow at Argenteuil by
Claude Monet7. Repeat until the child has closure.
PAGE 60 | FROGGY’S
Materials: Image of Claude Monet’s Snow
at Argenteuil; paper or canvas for painting;
watercolors, acrylic, or oil paints as age
appropriate; paint brushes; and a paint
palette; optional tabletop or floor easel
In this activity, we use Claude Monet’s Snow
at Argenteuil as inspiration for painting
a winter scene. This is an open-ended art
project. It is not meant as a step-by-step
reproduction exercise. After the child has
held and examined the painting, tape the
printable in a place the child can easily
glance while painting. Allow the child to
experiment. It is okay if the end result does
not remotely resemble the inspiration. Resist
the temptation to interrupt the child’s work
with suggestions or questions. Set up a
painting area for the child and dress the child
in appropriate clothes or smock for the task.
Introduce your child to the printable.
“Claude Monet, a great impressionists painter,
lived in Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris, which
was hit hard with snow in the winter of
1874-1875. Monet was inspired by snow and
in multiple works, one of the best know is
this painting, Snow at Argenteuil that Monet
painted in 1875. It shows the snow-covered
scene on the street where Monet lived (pause
for the child to examine).
Notice that there is not a lot of life-like, fine

Snow at Argenteuil is a spectacular example
of the impasto technique, where several
layers of paint are used, thickening the
pigment. While you do not get the full effect
of that technique looking at a photograph of
the paining, the brushstrokes appear to be
coming out of the canvas. (pause)
Take note of the wintery colors Monet
chose. The choreographed grays and blues
beautifully convey the feel of that winter day.
You can almost feel the chill in the air (pause).
Using Monet’s Snow at Argenteuil as
inspiration, paint your own winter scene.”
Walk away and let your child paint! One the
child has finished painting and cleaned up,
ask about their work. Why did they choose
particular colors? What do they think of
their work? What do you like best about your
piece? If you were to do it again, is there
anything you would change? The goal is to
get them thinking critically about their work.
Comment on specific details that you admire.
Display your child’s work in a prominent
place and enjoy! Repeat the activity with
another inspiration piece, along with a short
statement of the positive impact your child
would like to have in the world and submit
for inclusion in the Montessori Masterpiece
Children’s Artwork Showcase of Froggy’s
Montessori Spring 2023 issue. Deadline is
